  • erlang io:format, and a hanging web application

    While I'm learning a new language, I'll typically put lots of silly println's to see what values are where at specific times. It usually suffices because the languages typically have available a tostring equivalent. In trying that same approach with erlang, my webapp just "hangs" when there's a value attempted to be printed that's not a list. This happens when variable being printed is a tuple instead of a list. There's no error, exception, nothing... just doesn't respond. Now, I'm muddling through by being careful about what I'm writing out and as I learn more, things are getting better. But I wonder, is there a way to more reliably to [blindly] print a value to stdout? Thanks, --tim

    While trying to come-up with a servlet based application to read files and manipulate them (image type conversion) here is a question that came up to me: Is it possible to inspect a file content and know the filetype? Is there a standard that specifies that each file MUST provide some type of marker in their content so that the application will not have to rely on the file extension constraints? Consider an application scenario: I am creating an application that will be able to convert different file formats to a set of output formats. Say user uploads an PDF, my application can suggest that the possible conversion formats are microsoft word or TIFF or JPEG etc. As my application will gradually support different file formats (over a period of time), I want my application to inspect the input file instead of having the user to specify the format. And suggest to user the possible formats of output. I understand this is an open ended, broad question. Please let me know if it needs to be modified. Thanks, Ayusman

However, in one situation, I want to dismiss just the UIAlertView, the other, I want the UIAlertView to be dismissed and view to return to root view.     Im trying to setup the code formatting in ReSharper. Limiting each line to a maximum count of characters, it seems to want to place casts on a separate line. Like so: string mystring = (string) MyStringConverter.convert(toconvert, typeof(string), null, null); I cant seem to be able to find the correct combination of settings to not have this on three lines. Im looking for something like this: string mystring = (string) MyStringConverter.convert( toconvert, typeof(string), null, null); Where the linebreak occurs is not that important, I guess I cant be to picky when I want to limit the line length. But three lines is a bit much. Does anyone know the/any correct combination of settings to make it only cut the line once?

  • small scale web site - global javascript file style/format/pattern - improving maintainability

    I frequently create (and inherit) small to medium websites where I have the following sort of code in a single file (normally named global.js or application.js or projectname.js). If functions get big, I normally put them in a seperate file, and call them at the bottom of the file below in the $(document).ready() section. If I have a few functions that are unique to certain pages, I normally have another switch statement for the body class inside the $(document).ready() section. How could I restructure this code to make it more maintainable? Note: I am less interested in the functions innards, more so the structure, and how different types of functions should be dealt with.   • What does ZIP stand for (the compression format, not the postal codes)

    Does anybody know for what the acronym ZIP stands for which was and is used in programs like PKZIP and GZIP? There is a compression algorithm named Lempel-Ziv-Welch-Algorithm (LZW) maybe the guy named Ziv invented together with other people ZIP? I cannot find anything about it, maybe its not an abbreviation but instead it just means "to zip files" but I think originally there was more about it..

    I am attempting to perform conditional formatting in Excel 2007 by checking if a cell has a specific string in it and therefore highlighting the entire row corresponding to the text. However, Excel 2007's Conditional Formatting only allows me to highlight that specific cell. Is there a workaround to this without having to get my hands dirty with VBA?

Most of the formats in the variable are shown above- there are a couple of very rare others too. The reason why there are multiple formats is that the data were pulled together from various websites that each used different formats. I have tried using straightforward conversions e.g. strftime(mydf$date,"%d/%m/%Y") but these sorts of conversion will not work if there are multiple formats. I don't want to resort to multiple gsub type editing. I was wondering if I am missing a more simple solution?     Hello there. I've got BMP file's raw pixels table in byte[], it's structure is: (b g r) (b g r) ... (b g r) padding ... (b g r) (b g r) ... (b g r) padding Where r, g, b are byte each, padding is to round row length up to a multiple of 4 bytes. So, how can I create new BufferedImage from this raw data without copying, just using this raw data? I took a look at creating BufferedImage from DataBuffer, but I just didn't get it. Unfortunately ImageIO is not allowed in my situation.

    I'm new to java and i'm trying to find a way of incrementing through an user input IP address range. For example from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255. However the way my application works at the moment is the take the from and to ip addresses as a String. Is there a way I can increment through all the ip addresses the user input from and to? Hope this makes sense and please dont flame me, I have looked for an answer!

I assume it needs some sort of e.at_xpath() to find the div.control-group parent and add the .error class to it but I'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone help? PS This may all be possible using the formtastic or simple_form gems but I'd rather just use my own html if possible. EDIT If I put e['class'] = 'foo' in the if e.node_name.eql? 'label' section then it applies the class to the label so I think I just need to find the parent tag of e and then apply an .error class to it but I can't figure out what the xpath would be to get from label to its div.control-group parent; no combination of dots, slashes or whatever seems to work but xpath isn't my strong point.

    I'm struggling with a reshape in R. I have 2 types of error (err and rel_err) that have been calculated for 3 different models. This gives me a total of 6 error variables (i.e. err_1, err_2, err_3, rel_err_1, rel_err_2, and rel_err_3). For each of these types of error I have 3 different types of predivtive validity tests (ie random holdouts, backcast, forecast). I would like to make my data set long so I keep the 4 types of test long while also making the two error measurements long.     When I run this code: - (NSString *)description{ return [NSString stringWithFormat:@"(FROG idle:%i animating:%i rect:%@ position:%@ tongue:%@)", self.idleTime, self.animating, NSStringFromCGRect(self.rect), NSStringFromCGPoint(self.position), tongue ]; } I get the following output: (FROG idle:0 animating:0 rect:(null) position:{{1,2}{3,4}} tongue:{5,6}) This is wrong because it seems to be skipping the rect format string and placing everything displaced by one. So idle and animating are what I expect, then rect is skipped, but the result from NSStringFromCGRect(self.rect) is placed into position, then the result for position is pushed to tongue, then tongue is not displayed at all. I'm at a loss.

    I need to convert a credit card expire field from MMYY to a date field I can use in a MS SQL query so I can compute when credit cards are expiring in the future. Basically, I need to go from MMYY to MM/DD/YYYY, where the day part could just be '01' (the first of the month). I'm looking for credit cards that are expiring next month from a database. The problem I'm running into is when next month is the first month of the next year.     I am trying to bhuild a drill down menu for my website, where user will click on a category and it will show the subcategories of that clicked category, there could be n-levels. I am able to write sql query which returns the output exactaly as I want, but the problem is...I dont want to show the whole menu to end user, I would like to open/expand only clicked category. my Query output is: 1 IPTV 2 Jadoo Tv 3 Shava Tv 4 Jalva Tv 5 Programming 6 Microsoft 7 Asp.Net 8 PHP so by default IPTV & Programming Should be displayed, since they are parent, and when I click on IPTV it should open the children of IPTV, like I said there could be n-levels. I was thinking, I can load the output of query to webpage and then control the menu navigation with css/javascript. do you guys have any ideas?
