  • Vista install works on one computer, but bluescreens another (on which Vista is known to work)

    I hope my explanations make some sense -- please ask for clarification if they don't. I had a computer running Windows Vista (Ultimate, 64-bit). All was well! Then one day there was a nasty power surge at the office, and it died. (We didn't have surge protectors at the office, unfortunately. I assumed our lines were conditioned elsewhere, or was not an issue here. Oops.) After some testing, it was determined that the PSU, motherboard, and RAM were bad. While waiting for new hardware to arrive, I put my hard disk in a spare PC which had identical parts (mobo/CPU/RAM/PSU/video). Everything worked perfectly. The only way I could even tell it wasn't my computer is because Vista asked to re-activate itself with the new hardware, which worked fine, too. So the hard disk seems OK. Then the new parts arrived. The old motherboard model is no longer manufactured, so it's a new one with the same CPU/RAM/videocard/etc. slots. The PSU is also new, while the RAM I'm using is from the spare PC mentioned above. When I put it together and tried booting with my old hard disk, it starts to boot Windows, and then (fairly early in the process) gives a bluescreen and immediately reboots (so I can't see whatever the bluescreen is trying to tell me). I tried "safe mode", which also bluescreened. I tried booting the Vista DVD and running the repair utility, which found a Vista install, confirmed that it would not boot, and, eventually, declared that it was unable to repair it. I installed Vista fresh on a new hard disk, with the new mobo/etc., and it works perfectly. (That's what I'm running now.) I've also booted a Linux CD here, which ran great, and I've run Memtest86+ for a while, which found no errors. So all the hardware apart from the old hard disk seems OK, too. I don't think the problem is with my old Vista hard disk, since I used that with another mobo/CPU just fine. I don't think it's any other part of the new hardware, since I'm able to use it (and test it) with no trouble. It's just the combination of my old Vista install plus the new PC hardware that's not happy. I can get my data off my old hard disk and onto my new hard disk, and reinstall my apps, but it would be nice if I could fix things so I could continue to use my old hard disk as before. The latest hypothesis I've heard is that Vista had trouble with the new hardware (i.e., motherboard), but we have no idea what to do about that (except Safe Mode, which didn't work). Suggestions? Hypotheses for what's not right about this combination of Vista install and motherboard? Thanks!

  • Cannot Expand/Collapse tasks in Microsoft Project 2010

    I opened an existing Microsoft Project file today and was unable to expand/collapse the subtasks use the cursor and the '+/-' signs beside the parent tasks. I am able to expand and collapse using the 'View-Outline' ribbon icon. However when I attempt to do this using the mouse on specific tasks, my cursor will not perform the task. My cursor is a 'white cross' when I need it to be an 'arrow'. I'm assuming this is something minor that I'm missing. Any assistance appreciated. Thanks

  • Firefox 4, 5 hang on Windows XP

    I've been having a lot of trouble with Firefox 4 and 5 hanging on my Windows XP machine. I've often found a temporary solution of uninstalling and reinstalling. Recently I deleted my Firefox profile to get a clean start. But nothing seems a reliable solution. The only plugin that I have is Firebug. My machine is a bit low on RAM, with only 2 GB. Am I missing something? Any troubleshooting steps that you would recommend? I've come to expect Firefox to be very stable, and that has not at all been my experience lately.

  • OSX AFP authentication

    I've enabled file sharing (AFP) on my iMac so that I can access it via our MacBook. I've also created a directory ~/shared/family that I have shared to specific user accounts. When I use the Finder on my MacBook, I see my iMac computer listed, and I can see my ~/Public directory on the iMac, but I can't see ~/shared/family. How do I authenticate from my MacBook to my iMac? That seems like it's the missing step.

    Is there a native option (ie. without installing extra soft/package/plugins) to enable mouse support in the Terminal app? Actually, I'm using a lot vim with the option set mouse=a (activating mouse features). But it seems that Terminal don't support all xterm's features. It appears (after some googling) that Terminal had once the mouse support, but I wonder where did it go. N.B: I really want mouse support in Terminal, not only for vim, so please, don't suggest MacVim :]

    I can't get access to a folder on our server and can't understand why. Perhaps someone will see what I'm overlooking... Trouble accessing /Library/Subdirectory/NextDirectory/ User joe can ssh to the server just fine and cd to /Library/Subdirectory/ however trying to cd into the next folder, NextDirectory, gives this error: -bash: cd: NextDirectory/: Permission denied both username joe & bill are members of the group admin and both can get INTO Subdirectory without any trouble... hostname:Library joe$ ls -l | grep Subdirectory drwxrwxr-x 3 bill admin 102 Jun 1 14:51 Subdirectory and from w/in the Subversion folder hostname:Subdirectory joe$ ls -l drwxrwx--- 5 root admin 170 Jun 1 22:19 NextDirectory bill can cd into NextDirectory but joe cannot!?! And then using dir or tree /F, the content in Unicode won't show as Unicode. (in Window Explorer (file manager), the Unicode will show) Is there a way to handle it? To get Unicode characters to test your filenames, you can go to http://news.google.com/news?edchanged=1&ned=tw and you will be able to get many Unicode characters there (UTF-8)

  • How to bridge Debian guest VM to VPN via Cisco AnyConnect Client running on Windows Vista host

    I am running Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client version 2.5.3054 on a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (version 6.0.6002) Service Pack 2. I am running the VMware Player version 4.0.2 build-591240. The host operating system running under VMware Player is Debian 6.0.2.1 i386. The laptop is connected to a wireless connection, and I can browse the web from Windows Vista using Firefox just fine. I am able to boot into the Debian VM and open up a browser and access websites on the WAN from within the VM just fine. I can ping real Linux hosts on my LAN via: ping <lan_system>.local where <lan_system> is the hostname returned from uname -a on that system on my LAN. From a DOS CMD shell, I am able to ping hosts that exist on the remote network served by the Cisco AnyConnect Client's VPN network (and without the .local suffix applied as above): ping <remote_system> However, from within the Debian VM, I expect to be able to also ping those same remote hosts (<remote_system>) that are tunnelled over the VPN set up by Cisco AnyConnect Client. Let's say that I can ping a <remote_system> called flubber from a DOS CMD prompt just fine.   • SSD -- Special settings for SSD as secondary drive?

    Hello all, I recently purchased an Intel SSD (X25-V 40GB) and I want to add it to my PC as a secondary drive (not the boot/system drive) so I can install specific software to it. Now, do I need to do anything special to ensure long life and peak performance with this as a secondary drive? I have Windows 7 Pro. by the way. All the literature I can find covers the use of a SSD as a boot/system drive under Windows 7, but I don't want to run it like that (I have my reasons). I'm wondering if things like TRIM still work if you don't use the SSD as the boot/system drive. If TRIM and the like still works, do I have to do anything special in order to enable it for my particular setup? Thanks.

  • Getting a VMnet0 error in VMWare workstation after updating host computer from Windows 8 to 8.1

    Yesterday, I updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have VMWare Workstation 10 running Windows XP on this computer and prior to the update I had no issues connecting to my network. However, since updating, I haven't been able to connect to any network and I'm getting the following error: "The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The firtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0" I've checked all of my settings which currently have my network adapter set for a bridged connection and under device status "connected" is checked. Not really sure where to go from here, but after doing some research I have seen that others users have reported getting this error when updating the OS (any OS, not windows 8 specifically) of the host computer. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result !   • Fedora 12 - login panel: disable automatic login

    Hello Everybody I have just replaced my FC11 by the FC12. To put skype up and running I used autoten and choose to not have the automatic login enable. After running it the skype was working nicely. However the next time I restarted the machine, on the login panel appeared ""automatic login"" option. I went to /etc/gdm/custom.conf and added the command AutomaticLoginEnable=false Restart the system and although automatic login isn't active anymore, the ""automatic login"" option still appears as if it were an option to be picked from the login panel. I googled around but didn't find how to get rid of it. Any suggestions? All comments are highly appreciated.

    I have a printer connected to my computer that I'd like to share on my home network - shouldn't be a problem. The computer the printer is connected to is running Vista Ultimate x64. The computers I'm trying to share with are x86 Windows XP Professional and x86 Vista, so I need to install additional (x86) drivers. I checked the box to add x86 printer drivers and then it asked for the location of the drivers. I browsed to the location and clicked OK. It then prompted "Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor). When I click "Browse..." it wants the location of a file named ntprint.inf It looks like it's asking for a Windows (x86) installation disk. I put one in but I can't seem to find this file on the 32-bit Vista install disk Where is the proper place to find this file?

    I had installed virtualbox 4.2.2 in Windows 7.   • 32-bit Ubuntu or 64-bit w/Intel Atom D510 w/4GB RAM?

    (I've seen this question and some related ones, and perhaps this is a duplicate although part of my question is specific to the Atom D510.) I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on a new silent desktop as my latest (and hopefully last) attempt to switch from Windows to Linux for at least most everyday tasks. The new machine is entirely passvely cooled, but as a consequence, not astonishingly powerful — an Atom D510 (dual-core, 1.6GHz, HT) on Intel's D510MO board. That's fine, I won't use it for gaming, (much) video editing, etc. It's a 64-bit processor and I'm maxing the board out at 4GB of RAM (hey, that 1.6 CPU needs all the help it can get), which naturally raises the question of whether to install Ubuntu 64-bit or 32-bit (and if the latter, either live with the missing RAM, or do the PAE kernel dance). Although I've used Linux on servers for years, I'm very nearly a Linux desktop newbie and am not currently in the mood to fight driver wars and such. So if I'm setting myself up for failure with 64-bit, I'll live with the missing ~0.8GB or fiddle with PAE. But if 64-bit is entirely "ready," great, I'm there. So: Do most mainstream apps (now) play nicely with 64-bit Linux? I can't help but notice the "AMD" in the ISO image filename ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and I know AMD lead the way on this stuff — does Ubuntu 64-bit play nicely with Intel processors? Just generally, would you recommend one or the other? (And if anyone has any experience with Ubuntu specifically on the D510 [32-bit or 64-bit] which might lead me one way or t'other, that would be useful.) Thanks in advance.

  • Apple Mail authentication failure to Apache James while Thunderbird connects

    I have an Apache James 2.3.2 email server running on RHEL 5. I have been connecting to it successfully for months using Thunderbird (currently version 12.0.1). I am attempting to connect to the same account using Apple's Mail 6.5. On the first dialog, to add an account to Apple's Mail, it asks for full name, email address, and password. It then asks for an incoming mail server. I put account type equal to POP, the incoming mail server equal to the host in my email address, and my username and password. It comes back with the error: "Logging in to the POP server "" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot receive messages." While the dialogs are different in Thunderbird, I believe that I am giving it exactly the same parameters, and succeeding with authentication.
