• Force Finder to log in as Guest to a SMB share

  I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar.   We're running SQL Server 2000. In our database, we have an "Orders" table with approximately 750,000 rows. We can perform simple SELECT statements on this table. However, when we want to run a query like SELECT TOP 100 * FROM Orders ORDER BY Date_Ordered DESC, we receive the following message: Error: 9002, Severity: 17, State: 6 The log file for database 'tempdb' is full. Back up the transaction log for the database to free up some log space. We have other tables in our database which are similar in size of the amount of records that are in the tables (i.e. 700,000 records). On these tables, we can run any queries we'd like and we never receive a message about 'tempdb being full'. To resolve this, we've backed up our database, shrunk the actual database and also shrunk the database and files in the tempdb system database, but this hasn't resolved the issue. The size of our log file is set to autogrow. We're not sure where to go next. Are there any ideas why we still might be receiving this message? • Openfiler crashing without cause or leaving any log messages

  So my linux machine keeps crashing, without so much as a bye or a leave. I've tried and tried and failed again to work out whats happening. Any help would be much appreciated. Nothing that unusual - just greg logging in and out via samba. You'll notice there is a cron running for root every minute - ignore this - this isn't the issue either it was some check I've been doing to discover its problem. Jun 2 10:41:43 chai syslog: syslogd startup succeeded That restart was called manually by hand - by clicking the restart button on the box. So basically messages isn't revealing many secrets. dmesg only shows from startup. If there is any output I should paste. Just say when and where and it'll be done. Thanks for your help! Tim

  Today I got an e-mail from logcheck informing me that the following system event occurred. http: getaddrinfo*.gaih_getanswer: got type "46" Indeed, the above message occurs 4 times in /var/log/aut.log it occured twice yesterday around 6:46 am. And this morning it also occured twice around the same time. I wonder what this message means and if this message is something to worry about or if should just tell logcheck to ignore it. If it is something to worry about, then any pointers on how to fix the problem are appreciated.

  Masters, I try to set some event task on windows server 2003. I use this tutorial: http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-use-eventtriggersexe-to-send-e-mail-based-on-event-ids.htm My problem is when i set an event for example "If Event Id 528 in the security log, than send an e-mail.", then the eventrigger fire up the task continously, and i get the mail over and over. Any suggestion how to set eventriggers.exe to send e-mail once after the event occure in the event log? Thank you.

• Windows startup Powershell script not closing after Start-Process

  I've got a Powershell V2.0 startup script for my work computer (XP Professional 64-bit), as follows: start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE" -ArgumentList "/recycle" sleep -S 2 start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ArgumentList "https://mail.google.com" sleep -S 2 start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ArgumentList "-new-window https://www.google.com/calendar" sleep -S 2 start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" The sleeps are to ensure that the windows appear on the taskbar in the correct order. I run this from a shortcut on my Quick Launch with the following Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe C:\scripts\initialize.ps1 (Yes, this is 2.0: powershell -Version 2.0 works, as does -Version 1.0, but not -Version 3.0) Problem is, the command window stays open until the Firefox windows are closed, which is not what I want. Looking at Process Explorer when I run the script, here's what happens: powershell.exe appears under explorer.exe and the Powershell window appears (with a black background, oddly. But it's not cmd.exe, since when I was debugging the script error messages would appear in red). outlook.exe appears under powershell.exe and the Outlook window appears. firefox.exe appears under powershell.exe and a Firefox window appears. A second firefox.exe appears under powershell.exe and another Firefox window appears. The second Firefox process then exits, as expected, since Firefox only uses one process. skype.exe appears under powershell.exe and the Skype window appears. The powershell.exe process inexplicably sticks around, as does the Powershell window. If I close both Firefox windows, the powershell.exe process exits and the Powershell window closes, and the outlook.exe and skype.exe processes appear under explorer.exe as expected. I suspect this has something to do with Firefox's standard input, output and error: I wouldn't expect Outlook or Skype to ever output anything to the console, but Firefox has command-line options that allow it to do so. I've looked over my about:config's user set values and didn't find anything suspicious. Finally, if I have a firefox.exe instance already running (started from the desktop shortcut) the problem doesn't occur (the powershell.exe process exits as it ought to). So what's going on here? I'm going to try adding -WindowStyle hidden to the shortcut next (gotta close this Firefox to test it), but I want to get to the bottom of this, if only to improve my understanding of how Windows consoles work.

  Hi *, I'm searching for a tool to batch-copy files, that should support the following points: copy files from a net-share report any errors show errors only or filter log on errors don't stop on an error also report if a file or a folder could not be copied due to missing permissions if possible it should have a queue where new job can be added while copying I tried the following tools: TerraCopy: takes a lot time to just calculate the time and the size of the job and does not report errors due to missing permissions (it doesn't even add those files to the copy-queue) Karne's replicator: does not report errors due to missing permissions xcopy: does a great job when using the right parameters and piping the output to a file (in the German localization xcopy /k /r /e /i /s /c /h SOURCE TARGET>LOGFILE 2>&1 will do the job. opening the logfile in IE will give you a great monitor). but quing jobs it not possible (ok, you can join them all in a batch-file, but you can not queue jobs while another one is running (hm, thinking of a batch-script that loops through a file with the source-target-config...)) to be continued Which tools do you use? • Cannot start eventlog service

  On a windows 2k8R2 DC box the eventlog service wont start. When i try to start the service the machine returns: "Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid." event viewer wont open either. obviously, i dont have an event log for this error. ive already tried clearing the event logs. that didnt do anything. the other DC isnt experiencing this issue.

• central apache log analysis of many hosts

  We have 30+ apache httpd servers, and are looking to perform analysis on the logs both for historical trending and near "real time" monitoring/alerting. I'm mainly interested in things like error rates (4xx/5xx), response time, overall request rate, etc. but it would also be very useful to pull out more compute-intensive statistics like unique client IPs and user agents per unit of time. I'm leaning towards building this as a centralized collector/server/storage, and am also considering the possibility of storing non-apache logs (i.e. general syslog, firewall logs, etc.) in the same system. Obviously a large part of this will probably have to be custom (at least the connection between pieces and the parsing/analysis we do), but I haven't been able to find much information on people who have done stuff like this, at least at shops smaller than Google/Facebook/etc. who can throw their log data into a hundred-node compute cluster and run Map/Reduce on it. The main things I'm looking for are: - All open source - Some way of collecting logs from apache machines that isn't too resource-intensive, and transports them relatively quickly over the network - Some way of storing them (NoSQL? key-value store?) on the backend, for a given amount of time (and then rolling them up into historical averages) - In the middle of this, a way of graphing in near-real-time (probably also with some statistical analysis on it) and hopefully alerting off of those graphs. Any suggestions/pointers/ideas, to either "products"/projects or descriptions of how other people do this would be greatly helpful. Unfortunately, we're not exactly a new-age-y devops shop, lots of old stuff, homogeneous infrastructure, and strained boxes.

What I do have are empty files, which are eventually zipped. so does the notifempty directive is in fact responsible for these DayX-DayY files, days on which really nothing happened? what would be an efficient way to drop both, empty log files and their .gz files, so that I eventually only keep logs/compressed files that truly contain data?

• Ways to parse NCSA combined based log files

  I've done a bit of site: searching with Google on Server Fault, Super User and Stack Overflow. I also checked non site specific results and and didn't really see a question like this, so here goes... I did spot this question, related to grep and awk which has some great knowledge but I don't feel the text qualification challenge was addressed. This question also broadens the scope to any platform and any program. I've got squid or apache logs based on the NCSA combined format. When I say based, meaning the first n col's in the file are per NCSA combined standards, there might be more col's with custom stuff. Here is an example line from a squid combined log: 1.1.1.1 - - [11/Dec/2010:03:41:46 -0500] "GET http://yourdomain.com:8080/en/some-page.html HTTP/1.1" 200 2142 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; C) AppleWebKit/532.4 (KHTML, like Gecko)" TCP_MEM_HIT:NONE I'd like to be able to parse n logs and output specific columns, for sorting, counting, finding unique values etc The main challenge and what makes it a little tricky and also why I feel this question hasn't yet been asked or answered, is the text qualification conundrum. When I spotted asql from the grep/awk question, I was very excited but then realised that it didn't support combined out of the box, something I'll look at extending I guess. Looking forward to answers, and learning new stuff! Answers doesn't have to be limited to platform or program/language. For the context of this question, the platforms I use the most are Linux or OSX. Cheers

• Why would anacron not be running?

  I have a Ubuntu system that has anacron installed. However I'm pretty sure it's not running. It's not running the commands in /etc/cron.daily to rotate the syslog files (I'm using sysklog, which has its own rotating log method, not using logrotate). The last time the logs were rotated were in October 2009. /var/spool/anacron/cron.daily exists and the contents are 20091015. AFAIR we had a power outage then, and everything rebooted. How can I debug anacron? How can I see why it's not running? My first instinct is to look for /var/log/anacron, but that's not there. How can I fix it to make it run again?

  Hi all, Is there any way to increase the number of vmware.log files for a given VM (Vmware Server 1.0.4, host: SLES 10)? Problem is, that one of our VMs crashes every now and then, and I can only see the four log files vmware.log, vmware-0.log, vmware-1.log and vmware-2.log each of which contains records starting after the crash when trying to boot. • How can I select a default interactive console in pyDev?

  Using PyDev 2.7.1 in Eclipse 3.7.2, when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Enter to open a new interactive console, I get a dialog asking me what type of console I'd like to start ("Console for currently active editor", consoles for Python, Jython, Iron Python etc.). Now this selection dialog has no default entry and keyboard selection doesn't work, meaning that I have to use my mouse every time I need a new console, which is kind of tedious. I've checked Preferences - PyPev - Interactive Console, but found no interesting options there. Is there any possibility to define a default interactive console type so that I just have to hit Return when the dialog pops up or, even better, skip this question altogether?

  Heya, In my application, i need to monitor all messages sent by syslog. I've tried with UDP, but after one message, i didn't respond anymore (no error, just no heads up anymore). And setting up a tcp server isn't really the solution either i think. Can anyone guide me to a solution where i can log messages form syslog with tcp (normally on port 514). Thanks in advance.

  Disclaimer: I'm completely new to JEE/EJB and all that, so bear with me. I have a simple EJB that I can successfully deploy using JDeveloper 11g's integrated WebLogic server and a remote database connection (JDBC). I have a DataSource named "PGY2" defined in WebLogic, and I can test it successfully from the admin console. • How to more effectively debug PHP code in the vein JavaScript with Firebug or XCode?

  Hi everyone, I'm kind of a newbie with PHP so please bear with me. I would like to know if there was an effective way of debugging PHP code so that I don't have to have debugging messages display on the browser. For example, I find var_dump and print_r functions to be excellent for debugging variables, function calls and arrays respectively. The problem is I have been asked to debug code on a live site (no dev site, I know it is a horrible practice but this is not my project from the start.) So I would like to know what core function or php library or whatever else it is that I could use to log debugging calls in to log that I can check so I don't have to send debugging calls to the browser on a live site? I like the way you can use the console.log function in JavaScript code and check it in Firebug or the Webkit Console and I also like like the console window in Xcode and I was wondering if there was some similar tool for PHP debugging. Any extra info and pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, racl101.

• Can anyone provide a good "idiot's guide" to creating an installer in VS2008 (C#) Pro?

  I have Visual C# 2008 Professional and have developed the first half of a C# application (console mode) with the second half in progress now (GUI). I'm looking for an easy path to creating an installer for it. What are the steps that need to be taken to produce a professional installer? There's a similar question here regarding the Express edition but I have Pro, and I would like as much as possible to stick with just the standard VS stuff (if you think you can convince me that a third party installer creator is much better than a VS-only solution, give it a shot, by all means). Keep in mind that I have no interest in upgrading to VS2010 yet, even if it's a hundred times easier to create an installer. That can come later, when the revenue starts rolling in :-) Also be aware that the GUI component of this application is a totally separate executable from the console part. The console part is a simple "open file 1, do some work on it, write file 2" type and the GUI is a fairly standard "open file, do some stuff" beast so there's no tricky or wildly undocumented behaviour happening. Basically, I'm looking for (at least) the following: professional looking installer. ability to specify where the application files go. changes to the registry to allow double-clicks on my file extension to open the GUI app with the file as an argument. needs to install everything required (my stuff, .Net if required, and so on).

• Visual Studio 2010 Beta start without debugging Console wont stay open

  I want to keep the console (output) window open to view the output of the project I am working on. I have enabled the start without debugging option and added the button to the debugging toolbar, but alas it fails to keep it open nicely like in visual studio 2008. I have to add cin.getline() etc etc etc to get it to stay open, but I don't want to type it. Any suggestions as to alter it Visual Studio 2010 to keep it open, or any debugging tricks to make it easier to view output for longer than a flash. Visual Studio used to have a "Press any key to continue prompt" I want it back...

• Strange jboss console error

  Hello everyone, I'm creating additional module to already multi-module maven project. And for this one I want everything to be like in other modules(meaning dependencies) just to test hello world, then I'll go do some more complex stuff. And it does print hello world as it should when deployed onto jboss server, but I get some strange error on console, had anyone had similar experience? and how can I fix it? • Stack overflow in xp cmd console

  I am using an older program whose source code I cannot see. I am using the cmd.exe console in windows xp. The program ran with no problems on an xp machine last year, while a stack overflow code 2000 error was observed on a different xp machine (easy fix - use the machine that works). I tried running the program on the previously working machine lately, and now am getting the same error. No changes to the os were made and I did not change the service pack version. Any ideas on how to get around this stack overflow error so I can use the program? Dosbox will at least open the program, however it does not run to completion. Thanks!

• Load balancing a console application or service

  So it's easy to load balance an ASP.NET web application. You set up a load balancer between two servers, and if the web server isn't responding on Port 80, it won't receive requests. Are there any proven techniques for doing this for a C# console application or Windows service that takes actions of its own volition? Are there any frameworks for knowing if peer processes are alive or dead, doing heartbeats, etc? I've been experimenting a bit with NServiceBus and it seems like, for certain kinds of applications, it would help to have most of the work done as a response to an event, which makes it more like a web application, actually, and therefore easier to scale and load balance with multiple processes, but I feel like that's a half-baked solution since in most cases there usually needs to be some concept of a "master" process that's responsible for getting work started.
