• Unable to keep the connecting using a wireless bridge

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell inspiron desktop (core 2 duo) and am using wicd to manage my network/wifi. I've found that the WiFi card in the machine has trouble staying connected to my router (I believe this is a function of distance between the two), so I've taken an old Belkin F5d7231 wireless router and installed dd-wrt on it to use as a wireless bridge hoping that it will have better reception. I think everything up through the wireless bridge is working OK since I have no problems accessing the internet through it with my MacBook. The problem arises when I try to hook the ubuntu machine up to the wireless bridge. It will connect for a few minutes, but it will quickly disconnect without clear triggering event; it may be more likely to disconnect if there is a heavy traffic load going over it (could be something as simple as "cat big_text_file" in an ssh session). I've tried switching from dhclient to dhcpcd without much improvement. • A little SQL tip for C# developers

  The other day at work I came across a handy little block of SQL code from Jeremiah Clark's blog. It's pretty simple logic but through the mind of a C# developer making some quick DB updates, seems to me that it's more likely to end up writing out the code in Solution 1 instead of Solution 2 below to solve the problem. Basically, I needed to check and see if a specific record existed in Table1. If it does exist, then update that record, otherwise insert a new record into Table1. Solution 1: IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column1='SomeValue')     UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' ELSE     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...) Solution 2: UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' IF @@ROWCOUNT=0     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...)         As Jeremiah explains, they both accomplish the same thing but from a performance standpoint, Solution 2 is the better way to go (saved table/index scan). • Is it time to add IPv6 access to my websites?

  I have several dedicated servers and VPS servers, and some of those are at companies that have provided me with native IPv6 blocks (in addition to the IPv4 IP addresses). Does it currently make sense to point an AAAA record to an IPv6 address on my server, in addition to the A record pointing to the IPv4 address? This would be for (for example) the www subdomain. (the networking and web server software would be set up on the server to respond appropriately). A while ago I read that a small percentage of users (1 in a thousand?) would have slow or no access if a subdomain had both A and AAAA records because their networking software asked for one and got the other. Is that still the case, will adding an AAAA record inconvenience some users, or is the percentage already smaller and falling? In other words, is now the time to get around to adding native IPv6 support for a busy website aimed at the general public, or is it still too early?

  im unable to record sound using this app. the check box is checked for the sound, it just doesnt record sound. idk what to do. i have ubuntu 12.04 64bit. plus nvidia drivers dont work what so ever. so im just using the default ubuntu drivers. i looked up the site for this app. they dont give an instructions on sound for this program. any help me please??? the microphone sound input works with it. but it cant record system sounds.

  this is my sql table structure create table cottonpurchase ( slipNo int null, purchasedate datetime, farmercode int , farmername varchar (100), villagename varchar (100), basicprice int null, premium int null, totalamountpaid int null, weight int null, totalamountbasic int null, totalamountpremium int null, Yeildestimates int null ) I want to fill in the null values in my sql with actual values and not leave them null but I want to do that from my winforms app form! But if I do that it just adds a new record when what I want is for it to update the record which has, for example, farmercode = 2, farmername = blaah, and so on. I also want to enter this in the same records as in farmercode = 2 and the corresponding corresponding basic price = ... , everytime i do it it ends up making a new record and not in the existing one.

• Error starting JBoss 5.1.0

  I've installed JBoss 5.1.0 on a Xubuntu (running as a guest on VMWare - Windows 7 host). It did work fine for some days, but now I'm completelly unable to start it anymore. Every time I try to start it, I got a "Port 8x83 already in use". I've tried to run it with different ports configurations, and none of them works. I did look for the services using the problematic ports, using netstat and lsof, but they never show up. Since this error occurs in all port configurations, I think this is a Jboss problem. • Flash Security Error Accessing URL with crossdomain.xml

  Hello, I recently deployed a Flash application to a server, and am now experiencing errors when making HTTPService requests. I have put what I believe to be the most permissive crossdomain.xml possible in the wwwroot folder, and still get the errors. Interestingly enough, the error only seems to occur when the request is made from a direct user interaction (i.e. button click). The application makes other requests that are initiated by other means(i.e creationComplete) , and they seem to work as expected. Anyone see anything wrong with the crossdomain.xml, or have any other suggestions?   I'm creating an online game where people log in and then have the list of current players displayed. When the user enters a "room" it dispatches an SFSEvent which includes a Room object with the list of users as User objects in that room. As that event's callback function, I get the list of current users which is an Array, switch the View Stack child index, and then I wrap the user list array in an ArrayList before I assign it to the MXML Spark List component's dataSource. • How to get HTTP status code in HTTPService fault handler

  I am calling a server method through HTTPService from client side. The server is a RestFul web service and it might respond with one of many HTTP error codes (say, 400 for one error, 404 for another and 409 for yet another). I have been trying to find out the way to determine what was the exact error code sent by the server. I have walked teh entire object tree for the FaultEvent populated in my fault handler, but no where does it tell me the error code. Is this missing functionality in Flex?   I have a weird issue (weird because it is specific to one component) with applicationComplete in a fairly simple application. All the UI components are declared in MXML. I can access them all in applicationComplete, but not a spark.components.TextArea component, named taStatus here; it is null in the handler. • Flex: Scale an Image so that its width matches contentWidth?

  I have a dynamic layout, where an image is loaded into an HBox: <mx:HBox ...> <mx:Image height="100%" .../> </mx:HBox> only the image's height is set on the image, so that it can take all the vertical space available, while its width is left undefined and I expect the width to scale accordingly with its height. It turns out that the image's height is equal to its contentHeight, i.e. height scales properly; however, the image's width is still the same as measuredWidth (the image's original width), and is not scaled accordingly. For example, if the image's original size is 800x600 and if the HBox is 300 in height, then image height will scale down to 300, however its width doesn't scale down to 400, instead it stays at 800. I tried to add an event listener to explicitly set the image width: <mx:Image id="img" height="100%" updateComplete="img.width=img.contentWidth;" .../> It works only the first time the image is loaded, after that, if I use Image.load() to dynamically load different images, it stops working - the image width is set to 0. Any help/advice will be highly appreciated.

• How to know the order of component rendering in Flex

  I have a component that has a sub-component they both use a shared variable from the model. The shared variable needs to be set by the parent component before it can be used by the child component. I did like this in the parent component: <mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" ... creationComplete="group1_completeHandler(event)" > .... protected function group1_activateHandler(event:Event):void { model.myVariable = something; } .... <components:myCustomComponent> ... <components:myCustomComponent> ... </mx:Canvas> But for some reason when the code inside myCustomComponent tries to use myVariable for the first time I get a "null" object error. This means I guess that the child component gets rendered before the group1_activateHandler gets called and consequently myVariable gets set. What should I do to ensure that the parent container initializes the variable before the child component gets created?

• Design pattern for logging changes in parent/child objects saved to database

  I’ve got a 2 database tables in parent/child relationship as one-many. I’ve got three classes representing the data in these two tables: Parent Class { Public int ID {get; set;} .. other properties } Child Class { Public int ID {get;set;} Public int ParentID {get; set;} .. other properties } TogetherClass { Public Parent Parent; Public List<Child> ChildList; } Lastly I’ve got a client and server application – I’m in control of both ends so can make changes to both programs as I need to. Client makes a request for ParentID and receives a Together Class for the matching parent, and all of the child records. The client app may make changes to the children – add new children, remove or modify existing ones. Client app then sends the Together Class back to the server app. Server app needs to update the parent and child records in the database. In addition I would like to be able to log the changes – I’m doing this by having 2 separate tables one for Parent, one for child; each containing the same columns as the original plus date time modified, by whom and a list of the changes. I’m unsure as to the best approach to detect the changes in records – new records, records to be deleted, records with no fields changed, records with some fields changed. I figure I need to read the parent & children records and compare those to the ones in the Together Class. Strategy A: If Together class’s child record has an ID of say 0, that indicates a new record; insert. Any deleted child records are no longer in the Together Class; see if any of the comparison child records are not found in the Together class and delete if not found (Compare using ID). Check each child record for changes and if changed log. Strategy B: Make a new Updated TogetherClass UpdatedClass { Public Parent Parent {get; set} Public List<Child> ListNewChild {get;set;} Public List<Child> DeletedChild {get;set;} Public List<Child> ExistingChild {get;set;} // used for no changes and modified rows } And then process as per the list. The reason why I’m asking for ideas is that both of these solutions don’t seem optimal to me and I suspect this problem has been solved already – some kind of design pattern ? I am aware of one potential problem in this general approach – that where Client App A requests a record; App B requests same record; A then saves changes; B then saves changes which may overwrite changes A made. This is a separate locking issue which I’ll raise a separate question for if I’ve got trouble implementing. The actual implementation is c#, SQL Server and WCF between client and server - sharing a library containing the class implementations. Apologies if this is a duplicate post – I tried searching various terms without finding a match though.

• Oracle GoldenGate Active-Active Part 1

  My name is Nick Wagner, and I'm a recent addition to the Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) product management team.  I've spent the last 15+ years working on database replication products, and I've spent the last 10 years working on the Oracle GoldenGate product.  So most of my posting will probably be focused on OGG.  One question that comes up all the time is around active-active replication with Oracle GoldenGate.  How do I know if my application is a good fit for active-active replication with GoldenGate?   To answer that, it really comes down to how you plan on handling conflict resolution.  I will delve into topology and deployment in a later blog, but here is a simple architecture: The two most common resolution routines are host based resolution and timestamp based resolution. Host based resolution is used less often, but works with the fewest application changes.  Think of it like this: any transactions from SystemA always take precedence over any transactions from SystemB.  If there is a conflict on SystemB, then the record from SystemA will overwrite it.  If there is a conflict on SystemA, then it will be ignored.  It is quite a bit less restrictive, and in most cases, as long as all the tables have primary keys, host based resolution will work just fine.  Timestamp based resolution, on the other hand, is a little trickier. In this case, you can decide which record is overwritten based on timestamps. For example, does the older record get overwritten with the newer record?  Or vice-versa?  This method not only requires primary keys on every table, but it also requires every table to have a timestamp/date column that is updated each time a record is inserted or updated on the table.  Most homegrown applications can always be customized to include these requirements, but it's a little more difficult with 3rd party applications, and might even be impossible for large ERP type applications.  If your database has these features - whether it’s primary keys for host based resolution, or primary keys and timestamp columns for timestamp based resolution - then your application could be a great candidate for active-active replication.  But table structure is not the only requirement.  The other consideration applies when there is a conflict; i.e., do I need to perform any notification or track down the user that had their data overwritten?  In most cases, I don't think it's necessary, but if it is required, OGG can always create an exceptions table that contains all of the overwritten transactions so that people can be notified. It's a bit of extra work to implement this type of option, but if the business requires it, then it can be done. Unless someone is constantly monitoring this exception table or has an automated process in dealing with exceptions, there will be a delay in getting a response back to the end user. Ideally, when setting up active-active resolution we can include some simple procedural steps or configuration options that can reduce, or in some cases eliminate the potential for conflicts.  This makes the whole implementation that much easier and foolproof.  And I'll cover these in my next blog.
