Why would ASP.NET MVC use session state?

Recommended by the ASP.NET team to use cache instead of session, we stopped using session from working with the WebForm model the last few years. So we normally have the session turned off in the web.config <sessionState mode="Off" /> But, now when I'm testing out a ASP.NET MVC application with this setting it throw an error in class SessionStateTempDataProvider inside the mvc framework, it asked me to turn on session state, I did and it worked. Looking at the source it uses session Dictionary<string, object> tempDataDictionary = httpContext.Session[TempDataSessionStateKey] as Dictionary<string, object>; // line 20 in SessionStateTempDataProvider.cs So, why would they use session here? What am I missing? Thanks, Ray. ======================================================== Edit Sorry didn't mean for this post to debate on session vs. cache, but rather in the context of the ASP.NET MVC, I was just wondering why session is used here. In this Scott Watermasysk blog post he mentioned on turning off session too as a good practice, so I'm just wondering do I have to turn it on to use MVC from here on?

AssemblyResolve event is not firing during compilation of a dynamic assembly for an aspx page.

This one is really pissing me off. Here goes: My goal is to load assemblies at run-time that contain embedded aspx,ascx etc. What I would also like is to not lock the assembly file on disk so I can update it at run-time without having to restart the application (I know this will leave the previous version(s) loaded). To that end I have written a virtual path provider that does the trick. I have subscribed to the CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve event so as to redirect the framework to my assemblies. The problem is that the when the framework tries to compile the dynamic assembly for the aspx page I get the following: Compiler Error Message: CS0400: The type or namespace name 'Pages' could not be found in the global namespace (are you missing an assembly reference?) Source Error: public class app_resource_pages__version_1_0_0_0__culture_neutral__publickeytoken_null_default_aspx : global::Pages._Default, System.Web.SessionState.IRequiresSessionState, System.Web.IHttpHandle I noticed that if I load the assembly with Assembly.Load(AssemblyName) or Assembly.LoadFrom(filename) I dont get the above error. If I load it with Assembly.Load(byte[]) (so as to not lock it), the exception is thrown but my AssemblyResolve handler, when called is returning the assembly correctly (it is called once). So I am guessing that it is called once when the framework parses the asp markup but not when it tries to create the dynamic assembly for the aspx page.

How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Can grub handle same release (3.6) but new rc (rc5)?

can grub handle newer kerner rc ? I am running 3.6.0-rc4 ok, grub update definitely recognizes all required files for rc5, but edit of grub.cfg only shows rc4 after grub-update. D/N matter whether I generate kernel 3.6.0-rc5 or whether I install the .deb files. In this post I will be providing you with a hands-on example on the JQuery Cycle Plugin.I have been using extensively this plugin in my websites.You can rotate a series of images using various transitions with this plugin.It is a slideshow type of experience. ATI propriatery drivers install latest 12.8, broke my kernel. Stuck on kernel 3.2.0-26

I messed up a bit. Hoping some here can help me. I tried to install the newest catalyst 12.8. Sadly, this broke my system. I was stuck in low graphics mode. I finally managed to restore the proprietary drivers, and get into ubuntu again. But now I am stuck on kernel 3.2.0.26. I had installed kernel 3.2.0-30, but the system no longer sees it. I have kernel 3.2.0-29 too, but the system cannot see that as well. In the grub menu. When I use sudo update-grub, they are both listed. jQuery hover menu not disappearing

I have a basic menu using some nested UL's, which is pretty standard I think. When hovering over an LI from the "root" menu, I want the UL within that LI to display. Move the mouse off or to another LI, it shows that submenu. Move down to the submenu and it stays while you hover over each element. I had it working with a simple jQuery.hover() set, but then I ran into issues. When on a page, the "root" menu item is given a class of 'current-page' and if that class exists, I want it to display that submenu statically after a mouseout. Hope I explained that well enough. I just tossed a variable into the hover functions so on the mouseout it ran a .show() on the current-page's submenu. Easy. Except that when I move the mouse between the individual LI's of the submenu, it changes back to the current-page submenu. So I attempted to add a timer element based on another question here. That made things worse -- now the submenus just don't disappear. Here's my CSS, markup, and JS ... how the heck do I make this work properly? Server.transfer causing HttpException

I am developing a C#/SQL ASP.NET web application in VS 2008. Currently I am using the Server.Transfer method to transfer control from one ASPX.CS file to another ASPX file. The first time through, this works. But after control is transferred to this new file it encounters a condition: if (restart == false) { where "restart" is a boolean variable. After this statement it immediately transfers control back to the same ASPX.CS file and tries to reexecute the Server.Transfer method. This time it gives me the following exception and stack trace. Sharepoint Search crawl not working

Search Crawling is error out on my MOSS 2007 installation. I get the following error for all the web apps I have following error in Crawl logs. http://mysites.devserver URL could not be resolved. The host may be unavailable, or the proxy settings are not configured correctly on the index server. The Application Event log also has the following corresponding error The start address http://mysites.devserver cannot be crawled. Context: Application 'SSPMain', Catalog 'Portal_Content' Details: The URL of the item could not be resolved. The repository might be unavailable, or the crawler proxy settings are not configured. To configure the crawler proxy settings, use the Proxy and Timeout page in search administration. (0x80041221) I'm using Windows 2008 server. I tried accessing the site using the above mentioned url and its available. I did the registry setting for loop back issue found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861 still not luck. Any Ideas?

Exchange 2010 periodically stops responding to SMTP events with error 421 4.4.1 Connection timed out

After some help diagnosing why Exchange 2010 Enterprise stops responding to SMTP events. I can't find a pattern to it. It doesn't appear to be an actual timeout, as the server responds immediately with the error. To reproduce it I telnet into the server on port 25 and issue a EHLO. The server immediately replies with the 421: 421 4.4.1 Connection timed out Once this starts happening I've found restarting the exchange box is the only reliable way to get it flowing again. Sometimes restarting the Transport service or the mailbox attendant service seems to fix it, but this could be coincidental as it often has no effect.

ESXi hard drive power saving

I currently have a Windows Server running beneath my desk and was considering replacing it with a ESXi layer to run both a Windows and Unix virtual machine. The ESXi is going to give me some nice advantages that I can use but I am still stuck on this issue: The server is mainly used as a fileserver/local webserver, and I use Windows tasks to hibernate/wake the machine at night. Also there is an aggressive disk spin down timeout to reduce noise. With ESXi, this will not be possible to do any more. I could live with the server running 24/7, but I would really like to spin down the disks when not in use. Is there a way to do this on ESXi?

Timer_ConnectionIdle in HttpErr

I have a web service application with some reliability issues I am trying to diagnose. One thing that I noticed is that there are a number of entries in the HTTPERR log that indicate "Timer_ConnectionIdle". I have read a few places that these are innocent and occur when the client leaves a connection open and then doesn't get around to reusing it before the server times out. I'm wondering however if it could also be happening if my server-side application is taking too long to respond to requests. I guess my question is whether a Timer_ConnectionIdle event is triggered if the server application doesn't start writing a response to the client within the 2-minute default timeout window or if the "clock" is only ticking when the application is not working on servicing the request.

Openswan + xl2tpd connections time out after a while

I have a non-NATed Openswan+xl2tpd server (Ubuntu 12.04), to which I connect with a Windows 8 behind NAT. The client loses its connection after a while of doing nothing (between 30 and 60 minutes, but I didn't time it). The client doesn't have enabled that it should kill inactive connections. Nor does it ever go into sleep mode. I also tried setting the kill-after-time to 24 hours, but that didn't help. The NAT router behind which the client located is Debian Linux, and its router is a Cisco which connects us directly to the data center where the server is. None of our other connections, like SSH, get dropped with inactivity (because of cheap routers). I did however try turning on the keepalives in /etc/ipsec.conf: config setup (...snip...) nat_traversal=yes force_keepalive=yes keep_alive=10 but that didn't help. As you can see in the config later, dead peer detection's action is clear. That would be a first suggestion to fix, but I need clear, because people will be connecting from everwhere but the kitchen sink. Besides, as I said, in the test setup I have now, I can't see any device killing its connection. win xp wifi networking

I have 2 pcs with win xp and a wifi router ( without outgoing internet connection )...my job was to connect them over wifi to share some files. router was properly configured, both computers connected to wifi without problems, but when I tried to network them I could not see them in workgroup...i changed their names and added them to same workgroup but i couldn't connect pc1 to pc2 ( i could ping router from each pc but pinging other computer resulted in ping timeout) ..now i cant figure out why this is not working since I've done this before on more complex networks and it should work but...( maybe I have gremlins hiding somewhere..) edit1: Firewall is down on both machines( I disengaged it in both control panel and in services) and folder sharing and permissions are ok.. edit2: I know about Ad Hoc network ( wlan-to-wlan, without router/switch ) but that's not what I am trying to accomplish here :)

VMWare server host agent service won't start

I'm using VMWare Server 2.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Sometimes after restarting the host machine, the VMWare host agent service won't start due to an error. This is the error messages from Event Viewer: [Service control manager] Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the VMware Host Agent service to connect. [Service control manager] The VMware Host Agent service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. I've set the service to automatically restart after subsequent failure using services.msc (using a 10 min. delay), but it still won't start. Only starting the service manually seems to work. Has anyone experienced this before? What workarounds or fixes are there?

Bugzilla with SSL

I have an install of Bugzilla I'm trying to implement SSL on. When I go into the parameters screen and edit SSLBASE adding in the full url: https://foo.com/bugzilla/ the editparams.cgi times out on loading and I have the following error in the apache log [Tue Mar 30 19:29:39 2010] [error] [client xxx.xx.xx.xx ] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: ap_content_length_filter: apr_bucket_read() failed, referer: http://foo.com/bugzilla/editparams.cgi On install I also received this error: WARNING: You need to set the max_allowed_packet parameter in your MySQL configuration to at least 3276750. Currently it is set to 3275776. You can set this parameter in the [mysqld] section of your MySQL configuration file. How can I force this to work? Editing other parameters (eg urlbase) work fine. The SSL site is setup and direct requests to it eg https://foo.com/bugzilla work correctly. Any ideas? Ty

Make bootable iso with grub chainloading

My parents' pc has windows 7's boot manager installed at MBR and grub2 is installed on /dev/sda2 (booting linux on /dev/sda2). I want to make a bootable cd so that when booted from it just chainloads into the boot manager on the second partition. I assume using grub rather than grub2 for this will be simpler, using the configuration timeout=0 hiddenmenu default=0 title grub2 (/dev/sda2) rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader (hd0,1)+1 I know I can make a bootable linux cd in various ways, but that is not what I want. I just want to put grub/grub2 on the cd, no kernels or programs. The question is how do I make the iso file? I have found some references to installing on a floppy or usb disk, but all those assume the device is present when running the grub install commands. A iso file is different.

MOSS 2007 SP2 - Error while provisioning SSP.

This is a brand new installation I am trying to provision the first SSP for MOSS and I keep getting the following error: (Provisioning failed: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)) The error also keeps appearing in the Application Event Log as event ID 7888. Google searches tell me its a connection between the Sharepoint server and the SQL server however, this is a production SQL Server which has several databases on it that do not experience any problems. These databases also include the Central Admin and Web Application databases for Sharepoint which are all working fine. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
