  • How can one compile Darwinia under Linux?

    Introversion is now offering the Darwinia+Multiwinia source for sale, stating Note: You will need Windows and Visual Studio 2008 to build the games. We have tested that the code compiles correctly on the PC, but you will need to put some effort in to compile for Mac / Linux. There is no Xbox code in this release. Has anyone put this effort in already? The best answer would (be yes and) mention modifications that had to be done (also mentioning the distribution used), the second-to-best would explain why it doesn't work right now. Since I haven't bought the source pack I'm relying on up-votes as confirmation, so please comment on answers if something doesn't work or has to be modified e.g. for another Linux distribution. I'm currently using Ubuntu 8.04, but 10.04 or e.g. Gentoo would be a choice, too. EDIT: Clarification: The intention is to make a new game with that engine, but since this question is a prerequisite, it seems suitable here.   • Stupid Geek Tricks: Change Your IP Address From the Command Line in Linux

    Almost everybody can figure out how to change their IP address using an interface, but did you know you can set your network card’s IP address using a simple command from the command line? Changing Your IP From the Command Line in Linux Note: This will work on all Debian based Linux Distro’s. To get started type ifconfig into the terminal and hit enter, take note of the name of the interface that you want to change the settings for. To change the settings, you also use the ifconfig command, this time with a few parameters: sudo ifconfig eth0   192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 That’s about all all you need to do to change your IP, of course the above command assumes a few things: The interface that you want to change the IP for is eth0 The IP you want to give the interface is 192.168.0.1 The Subnet Mask you want to set for the interface is 255.255.255.0 If you run ifconfig again you will see that your interface has now taken on the new settings you assigned to it. If you wondering how to change the Default Gateway, you can use the route command. sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.253 eth0 Will set your Default Gateway on the eth0 interface to 192.168.0.253. To see your new setting, you will need to display the routing table. route -n That’s all there is to it.   • How to Boot a VMware Virtual Machine from a USB Drive

    Do you have an OS installed on your USB thumb drive? Booting from it in a VM is now possible, you’ll just have to use a simple trick to get it to work. Last week we showed you how to put Ubuntu on a USB drive in a separate partition, and we also discussed working with VMware Player (our favourite VM Client). But have you ever tried booting from a USB drive in VMWare? It doesn’t allow doing so, but we will force it to boot from a USB, with a bit of old geekery. If you remember, we have showed you how to boot from a USB drive even if your old PC doesn’t allow booting from one. That’s right, using Plop Boot Manager. All we need to do is to load the Plop ISO in VMware, attach and enable the USB drive in VMware, and finally select the USB option in Plop Boot Manager to boot from the USB.   • mint linux, DVD drive keeps randomly being accessed. unsure how to find culprit

    I have a workstation with mint linux 12. It seems like the DVD drive on the machine keeps randomly "activating". By activating it makes noise, the light turns on, and it seems like it is checking if a disk is in it. At first I thought I was being hacked and someone/something was trying to check if I had media in the DVDRom drive. I ruled that out with netstat and rkhunter.   • What is the easiest/simplest way to change the HD on a Linux server?

    Hello. I have a machine running Ubuntu Server that has been presenting some HD-related problems. Instead of reinstalling and reconfiguring everything (and to save time) we'd like to copy everything from the current hard drive to a new one and start using it. We only have a single hard drive with a main partition and a swap partition. What tools or methods would you recommend for replacing a hard drive with minimum difficulty and chance of problems?   • Is there anything to open .docx documents on Linux (Ubuntu) ?

    Hi, My mother has some serious issues using Windows (viruses, spywares, and so on) and I seriously think about setting up Ubuntu as a replacement. (That would ease my "job" as well) The only concern I have is, is there anything to edit .docx (or .xlsx, .pptx, ...) documents on Linux ? Last time I tried OpenOffice (was 3 years ago), it was only able to open "old" MS Office documents (.doc, .xls, ...). Thank you very much for your answers !

    I once used gnome-mount like this gnome-mount -o ro -d /dev/sda2 or gnome-mount -o ro -p "Macintosh HD" But, alas, gnome-mount seems to be no more. RIP. I can do this gvfs-mount -d /dev/sda2 (which generates a whole lot of errors but does mount the partition in the /media directory.)     I'm getting a Lenovo T520 with two graphics cards: Integrated Intel HD 3000 Discrete NVidia NVS 4200M In BIOS, I can adjust which card(s) to use: Integrated only Discrete only Both (NVidia optimus) Since optimus is not well supported under Linux, I wonder if it is OK to set up the system to use the NVidia card all the time. I have read somewhere that a laptop risks overheating if using a discrete graphics card all the time. Is this true? Does someone have any experience to share?

    I try to install a small audio player named "Audacious" with the following command: sudo apt-get install audacious and it tells me that it depends audacious-plugins, so I try to install the audacious-plugins, one thing leads to another, there're numerous depends and it is just impossible to install all of them manually... Is it even possible to install a software on ubuntu linux? Is there a way to auto install all the depends? (I have never seen such a stupid software manager.) Many thanks.

    I am running Top to monitor my server performance and 2 of my java processes show virtual memory of upto 800MB-1GB. Is that a bad thing? What does virtual memory mean? And oh btw, I have swap of 1GB and it shoes 0% used. So I am confused. Java process = 1 Tomcat server + my own java deamon Server = Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)
