Regarding the open questions: Will there be PSUs available for Intel Solaris? PSUs will be made available on nearly all platforms including Intel Solaris. Please see Note:882604.1 for platform information and Note:854428.1 for direct links to the PSU download location. Is COMMIT_WRITE=NOWAIT the default in patch set 10.2.0.4? I tried to verify this and neither couldn't find a bug entry nor a documentation saying the 10.2.0.4 has a different default setting (default behaviour is WAIT). Checked it in my 10.2.0.4 instances as well and there it is set to WAIT. If this parameter is not explicitly specified, then database commit behavior defaults to writing commit records to disk before control is returned to the client. If only IMMEDIATE or BATCH is specified, but not WAIT or NOWAIT, then WAIT mode is assumed. If only WAIT or NOWAIT is specified, but not IMMEDIATE or BATCH, then IMMEDIATE mode is assumed Please feedback to me if you have different experiences. Service Request escalation by telephone? • Unity Plugin DLLNotFoundException

  I am using a plugin DLL that I created in Visual C++ Express 2010 on windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition. The DLL functions properly on the machine that it was originally created on. The problem is that the DLL is not functioning in the Unity3d Editor on another machine and giving an error that basically states that the DLL is missing some of its dependencies. The target machine is running Windows 7 Home 64 bit (if this is relevant) Results from the error log of Dependency Walker: Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "c:\users\dewayne\desktop\shared\vrpnplugin\unityplugin\build\release\OPTITRACKPLUGIN.DLL" contains errors. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail (14001). Error: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in an implicitly dependent module. Error: Modules with different CPU types were found. Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found. Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module. • How would I setup reverse DNS for 2 email servers?

  I have an interesting DNS question (well interesting to me atleast). I just installed an hmail server in our remote office to act as an MX backup in the event our exchange server goes down. The 2 host names are mail.campbellsurvey.com mail2.campbellsurvey.com mail points to the address 98.XXX.91.XXX mail2 points to the address 70.XXX.190.XXX How would I setup a PTR record on the ISP end to reflect both hostnames? Does the PTR have to point to EXACTLY mail.campbellsurvey.com or can it point to just campbellsurvey.com? because right now anything passing through the primary static address in our pool (the one used for standard internet) is identified as mail.campbellsurvey.com. My only idea to fix this was to move the mail server to the next available address and give it only it the name mail.campbellsurvey.com but I wanted to see if there was another way. • ORM Profiler v1.1 has been released!

  We've released ORM Profiler v1.1, which has the following new features: Real time profiling A real time viewer (RTV) has been added, which gives insight in the activity as it is received by the client, in two views: a chronological connection overview and an activity graph overview. This RTV allows the user to directly record to a snapshot using record buttons, pause the view, mark a range to create a snapshot from that range, and view graphs about the # of connection open actions and # of commands per second. The RTV has a 'range' in which it keeps live data and auto-cleans data that's older than this range. Screenshot of the activity graphs part of the real-time viewer: Low-level activity tab A new tab has been added to the Application tabs: the Low-level activity tab. This tab shows the main activity as it has been received over the named pipe. It can help to get insight in the chronological activity without the grouping over connections, so multiple connections at the same time per thread are easier to spot. Clicking a command will sync the rest of the application tabs, clicking a row will show the details below the splitter bar, as it is done with the other application tabs as well. Default application name in interceptor When an empty string or null is passed for application name to the Initialize method of the interceptor, the AppDomain's friendly name is used instead. Copy call stack to clipboard A call stack viewed in a grid in various parts of the UI is now copyable to the clipboard by clicking a button. Enable/Disable interceptor from the config file It's now possible to enable/disable the interceptor Initialization from the application's config file, using: Code: <appSettings> <add key="ORMProfilerEnabled" value="true"/> </appSettings> if value is true, the interceptor's Initialize method will proceed. If the value is false, the interceptor's Initialize method will not proceed and initialization won't be performed, meaning no interception will take place. If the setting is absent, or misconfigured, the Initialize method will proceed as normal and perform the initialization. Stored procedure calls for select databases are now properly displayed as a call For the databases: SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Sybase ASA, Sybase ASE and Informix a stored procedure call is displayed as an execute/call statement and copy to clipboard works as-is. I'm especially happy with the new real-time profiling feature in ORM Profiler, which is the flagship feature for this release: it offers a completely new way to use the profiler, namely directly during debugging: you can immediately see what's going on without the necessity of a snapshot. The activity graph feature combined with the auto-cleanup of older data, allows you to keep the profiler open for a long period of time and see any spike of activity on the profiled application.

  Recently face very interesting situation, during presentations at event, I was asked very famous questions: “My CPU is very high all the time, how can I reduce it?” This is very interesting question and there are many answers and a single blog post is not good enough to justify this subject. I presented few situation to the person who asked the question. The member of the audience who asked question came to me afterwords and asked me few detailed questions. To answer him, I quickly wrote query which simulate high CPU. Here is the script which I wrote which increased CPU from 10% to 80%. • GPO Startup script did not execute on some computers

  The GPO Startup scripts works fine on other machine but not for another half of the machine. gpresult show that GPO was there. I ran RSOP and it show that the Startup script was there but it was never executed. There nothing on application error or anything related to the failed execution in the event viewer. I have set to Allow slow network connection too but it did not help for the startup script to execute. Permission read/execute granted to Domain Computers & Authenticated Users Other GPO settings works except Startup Script did not execute. The scripts works fine as other machine which success without any issue except some machine. I need help to sort this out as it troubles me where another half of the machine did not execute the script at all. It was all WIndows 7.

When i try to run "Windows XP Mode", it says: Cannot launch main process Windows Virutual PC When i click "Windows Virtual PC" it shows empty folder. Any ideas?

• Elastic versus Distributed in caching.

  Until now, I hadn't heard about Elastic Caching yet. Today I read Mike Gualtieri's Blog entry. I immediately thought about Oracle Coherence and got a little scare throughout the reading. Elastic Caching is the next step after Distributed Caching. As we've always positioned Coherence as a Distributed Cache, I thought for a brief instance that Oracle had missed a new trend/technology. But then I started reading the characteristics of an Elastic Cache. Forrester definition: Software infrastructure that provides application developers with data caching services that are distributed across two or more server nodes that consistently perform as volumes grow can be scaled without downtime provide a range of fault-tolerance levels Hey wait a minute, doesn't Coherence fullfill all these requirements? Oh yes, I think it does! The next defintion in the article is about Elastic Application Platforms. This is mainly more of the same with the addition of code execution. Now there is analytics functionality in Oracle Coherence. The analytics capability provides data-centric functions like distributed aggregation, searching and sorting. Coherence also provides continuous querying and event-handling. I think that when it comes to providing an Elastic Application Platform (as in the Forrester definition), Oracle is close, nearly there. • Vista Startup Repair cannot repair my Toshiba Laptop (L300D)

• Windows XP-64 loses audio sounds, drive letters... why?

  Until sometime in early December, I had a wonderfully functioning XP-64 system. It was configured to auto download/install MS patches. I occassionally update the software on it, e.g. Open Office, Adobe Reader, Skype, but I don't fetch hundreds of tools or anything much beyond what I just mentioned. In December, suddenly my audio stopped, and drive letters assigned to various mount points on other machines quit being available. Apparantly, the services that support these (and some others) are now not starting up when I boot/login. There isn't anything obvious in the event log. If I manually restart the associated services, these facilities come back on line and work for awhile (a day) but pretty soon the problem reappears. I don't reboot very often, nor do I log out out much. Hints?

• How to handle "circular dependency" in dependency injection

  The title says "Circular Dependency", but it is not the correct wording, because to me the design seems solid. However, consider the following scenario, where the blue parts are given from external partner, and orange is my own implementation. Also assume there is more then one ConcreteMain, but I want to use a specific one. (In reality, each class has some more dependencies, but I tried to simplify it here) I would like to instanciate all of this with Depency Injection (Unity), but I obviously get a StackOverflowException on the following code, because Runner tries to instantiate ConcreteMain, and ConcreteMain needs a Runner. IUnityContainer ioc = new UnityContainer(); ioc.RegisterType<IMain, ConcreteMain>() .RegisterType<IMainCallback, Runner>(); var runner = ioc.Resolve<Runner>(); How can I avouid this? Is there any way to structure this so that I can use it with DI? The scenario I'm doing now is setting everything up manually, but that puts a hard dependency on ConcreteMain in the class which instantiates it. This is what i'm trying to avoid (with Unity registrations in configuration). • Best way to fix security problems caused by windows updates?

  I have a laptop running Windows 7 32-bit. Last nights security updates caused my logitech mouse to stop working (specifically, it caused several USB ports to stop altogether). After reviewing the system event log I found that the IPBusEnum component was failing due to an activation security error. A little more research and I found that this was caused by the TrustedInstaller replacing the security permissions on those keys and generally mucking them up. To fix this I had to open regedit, take ownership of ALL the keys related to IPBusEnum and force it to use the inherited permissions from the tree. Is there a better way to fix this when MS screws up the updates? I would hate to have to walk around to a number of machines and manually fix the registry key security settings.

• Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86. I also tried to run a ping when this occurred and I got the following error in the event log: "Application popup: ping.exe - Application Error: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). • SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services - Configuration Manager & Management Studio Problems

  When I open Reporting Services Configuration Manager on my server, an error message appears that says: Reporting Services Configuration Manager An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800706B3 This error appears before I can even attempt to connect to an SSRS instance. In addition to this problem, I'm not able to connect to my SSRS instance via SSMS on my desktop. When I attempt to connect, I get the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib) Additional information: The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt) Information about my environment: Server: Win Server 2K3 x64, SQL 2005 x64 SP3 Build 9.0.4053 Desktop: Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Steps I have already taken: I have installed the latest service pack on my server and workstation. I do not see any errors in my event logs.

• Where's my MD.070?

  In a previous Blog entry titled “Where’s My MD.050” I discussed how the OUM Analysis Specification is the “new-and-improved” version of the more traditional Functional Design Document (or MD.050 for Oracle AIM stalwarts). In a similar way, the OUM Design Specification is an evolution of what we used to call the Technical Design Document (or MD.070). Let’s dig a little deeper…… In a traditional software development process, the “Design Task” would include all the time and resources required to design the software component(s), AND to create the final Technical Design Document. However, in OUM, we have created distinct Tasks for pure design work, along with an optional Task for pulling all of that work together into a Design Specification. Some of the Design Tasks shown above will result in their own Work Products (i.e. an Architecture Description), whilst other Tasks would act as “placeholders” for a specific work effort. In any event, the DS.140 Design Specification can include a combination of unique content, along with links to other Work Products, together which enable a complete technical description of the component, or solution, being designed. So next time someone asks “where’s my MD.070” the short answer would be to tell them to read the OUM Task description for DS.140 – Design Specification!
