• Database Optimization techniques for amateurs.

  Can we get a list of basic optimization techniques going (anything from modeling to querying, creating indexes, views to query optimization). It would be nice to have a list of these, one technique per answer. As a hobbyist I would find this to be very useful, thanks. And for the sake of not being too vague, let's say we are using a maintstream DB such as MySQL or Oracle, and that the DB will contain 500,000-1m or so records across ~10 tables, some with foreign key contraints, all using the most typical storage engines (eg: InnoDB for MySQL). And of course, the basics such as PKs are defined as well as FK contraints.

  So, that's how works Interesting Tags: I add into them my interested tags like php, mysql, jquery and so on. Then, if any of questions has the same tags as mine it makes background orange. I understand how to use jquery to do that (there were related questions to that), but without mysql it can't be done. Now, here is a question. How is it done? I imagine like that: There is a row in mysql for every member, let's call it "interested_tags". After I write and submit my tag through input, it is being written in a row "interested_tags". Then, the main page has a query which shows all answers and it always checks answer's with mine tags with strpos like this if(strpos($question_tags, $my_tags) === true) {        //and here will be made background orange } Am I thinking right or is there any way to do it?

  I have a query which is something like this: Session.CreateSQLQuery( @"SELECT f.*, b.*, z.* FROM Foo f LEFT OUTER JOIN Bar b ON b.Id = f.BarId LEFT OUTER JOIN Zar z ON z.Id = b.ZarId" ) .AddEntity("f", typeof(Foo)) .AddJoin("b", "f.BarId") .AddJoin("z", "f.ZarId") .List<Foo>(); The problem is that I am still getting hundreds of SELECT requests made to the Zar table, even though I have specified that Zar should be joined. As far as I am aware the only relationship is Foo-Bar-Zar, i.e. the reference to Zar is not occurring anywhere else. Is my understanding of AddJoin correct? What could be going wrong? List item

  I am trying to learn Java. I would like to implement a simple networked connect 4 game as well as a chat feature. I want my network logic to be non blocking so after much study I found that SocketChannel is what I am after regrading my needs. What has not made sense still is the lack of CallBack functions in SocketChannels.. Like one finds in C#. My query for this time is: How do I deliver the data received to the Chat or Game form (JFrame)? Some guidance is most welcome.

  I keep getting the same number outputted for the Total Sales, Minimum Sale, Largest Sale and Average Sale. The Total Invoices is working perfectly, but I cant seem to figure out how to fix the other ones.   I am a bit lost in all these "" and '' and . in this statement. Basically this query is to get all the tagname from table "tag" and display them for the users as checkboxes. If they have clicked 'submit' and they missed another field(say the title of a post), it would still have the tag they chose displayed. The part I need help with is the echoing part. • Finding records within a 5 min time interval in SQL

  I have a table with over 100,000 rows that contain the following columns: ID, Time, and Boolean. The time column tracks time down to the second. I need a query that will find all instances of Boolean = 1 for every 5 minute interval of time from the start of the table to the end, then group the count by time interval. The table represents 4 hours of data, so I should get 48 rows of results. I'm using MS SQL Server. I've tried a few approaches, but the time interval logic is giving me a hard time.

• Dynamic access to tables from another database inside an user function

  I have an user defined table function in SQL Server that aggregate data from several tables including a couple of tables of another database. That is done hardcoding the name of the database in the queries, but we want to make the database name configurable (because our databases usually share the server with the databases of other applications). I tried to construct a dynamic query string inside the function using the database name that is stored in a configuration table, but: When I tried exec(@sqlStatement) SQL Server said that execute string is not allowed inside a function. Then I tried exec sp_executesql @sqlStatement and the function was created, but when you execute it SQL Server says that inside a function you can only run extended functions and procedures. So the question is: is possible create a function or stored procedure that access a table in another database without having to recreate the function when the database name is different? TIA.

AND TimeStamp='2010-04-26 17:15:05.667' from SQL Server Management Studio. I have tried appending all Item names to one string variable and giving it as a parameter to the stored procedure,but it resulted into a wrong concatenation.   Hello, I am starting to learn the benefits of memcache, and would like to implement it on my project. I have understood most of it, such as how data can be retrieved by a key and so on. Now I get it that I can put a post with all of its details in memcache and call the key POST:123, that is OK, and I can do it for each post. But how to deal with the case when I query the table posts to get the list of all posts with their titles. Can this be done with memcache, or should this always be queried from the table?
