Getting started with Spring 3 Web MVC - Setting everything up

Hi, I'm trying to get started with JAVA/Eclipse/Spring MVC but can't seem to find a "dummies" or "step-by-step" guide for setting everything up and creating the simplest proof-of-concept application. I found http://static.springsource.org/docs/...-step-by-step/ but there seem to be differences between Spring 2.5 and Spring 3 so i'm looking for something for Spring 3. Also, the tutorial for Spring 2.5 focuses on building the application usign Ant - This i will certainly be doing for releasing but when working within Eclipse i want to have set up the project so that i can use breakpoints/debugging and this is not covered at all. I've downloaded Eclipse, Tomcat and the Spring 3 Framework but that's about it and within the downloaded Spring Framework documentation it states: 2.3 New getting started tutorial There is now a new getting started tutorial for developing a basic Spring 3.0 MVC web application. This tutorial is a separate document that can be found at the Spring Documentation page However, i can't seem to find such a tutorial on the linked page. My main problem at the moment, as seems to be the case for many people trying to get started with Spring, is that i can't seem to get everything set up. I've got a copy of Expert Spring MVC and Web Flow and i've also found this tutorial but i don't know if the setups they describe are still relevant and whether they will allow debugging. Can anyone please give some direction? Thanks

Cannot add SourceSafe Database as Visual Studio 2010 source control.

My issue is that I cannot add SourceSafe Database for source control within Visual Studio 2010. Our team was initially using VSS for source control in Visual Studio 2010. During an evaluation of TFS, I switched my source control to TFS. It will be a few weeks before a decision is made on TFS, so I needed to switch my source control back to VSS. However I'm now unable to add a SourceSafe Database in Visual Studio. Steps to Reproduce in Visual Studio 2010: 1) Access the 'Open SourceSafe Database' form via Tools-Options-Source Control-Plug-in Settings--Advanced or via File-Source Control 2) The list of available database is blank so I choose 'Browse'. 3) I browse to the srcsafe.ini file for my VSS database and select it. 4) I'm promted to confirm the Database Name - Click OK. 5) The database does not appear in the 'Open SourceSafe' Database form. The list of available databases is still blank. Note that I can add the database fine outside of Visual Studio using VSS directly. However the databases I add via VSS do not appear in the Visual Studio forms. I'm suspicious that this is related to "down-grading" from TFS to VSS which may not have been heavily tested at MS. Any assistance is appreciated.

PyDev and Django: PyDev breaking Django shell?

I've set up a new project, and populated it with simple models. (Essentially I'm following the tut.) Status of VB6/ Best Desktop Application Language with Native Compliation

Hi, I was looking for a Desktop Application Programming Language with one of the biggest constraint: - “ I need to output as native executable”. I explored multiple options: a) Java is not a very good option for desktop programming, but still you can use it. But Java to Exe is a problem. [Only GCJ and Excelsior-Jet provides this][1]. b) .Net platform does not support native compilation. Only very few expensive tools are available which can do the job. c) Python is not an option for native compilation. Right? d) VB6 is the option I am left with. From the above list, if I am correct, VB6 is the only and probably the best option I have. But VB6 itself has issues like: a) It is no more under development since 2003. b) There are questions on support of VB6 IDE with Vista. Thus my questions are: a) From the list of programming language options, do you want to add any more? b) If VB6 is good/best option, looking at its development status, would you suggest using VB6 in this era? Is there any solution for this issue? or other reason to make it happened?

Flex, Ant, mxmlc and conditional compilation

My ActionScript project builds with several compile-time specified constants. They are all Booleans, and only one of them is true at any given time. The rest must be false. When I represented my build process in a bash script, I could loop through the names of all these constants, set one of them to be true and the rest to be false, then concatenate them onto a string to be inserted as a set of arguments passed to mxmlc. In Ant, looping is more complicated. I've tried the ant-contrib for tag: <mxmlc file='blah' output='blah'> <!- ... -> <for list='${commaSeparatedListOfConstNames}' param='constName'> <sequential> <define> <name>${constName}</name> <value>${constName} == ${theTrueConst}</value>  </define> </sequential> </for> </mxmlc> Long story short, ant-contrib tags like the for tag can't go in the mxmlc task. So now I'm using Ant's propertyregex to take my list of arguments and format them into a set of define args, like my old bash script: <propertyregex property='defLine.first' override='false' input='${commaSeparatedListOfConstNames}' regexp='([^\|]+)\,' replace='\1,false ' /> <propertyregex property='defLine.final' input='${defLine.first}' regexp='(@{theTrueConst}\,)false' replace='\1true' />  Now my problem is, what can I do with this mxmlc argument and the mxmlc task? Apparently arg tags can go inside the mxmlc task without it throwing an error, but they don't seem to have any effect. What am I supposed to do? How do I make this work with the mxmlc task?

Hibernate JPA 2.0 CriteriaQuery, subset listing and counting at once

Hello, I recently started using the new Hibernate (EntityManager) 3.5.1 with JPA 2.0, and I was wondering if it was possible to both retrieve a (sub-set) of entities and their count from a single CriteriaQuery instance. Need to replace 3rd party WinForm controls, what's the closet WPF equivalent?

I am tired of Windows Forms...I just am. I am not trying to start a debate on it I am just bored with it. Unfortunately we have become dependent on 4 controls in DevExpress XtraEditors. I have had nothing but difficulties with them and I want to move on. What I need now is what the closet replacement would be for the 4 controls I am using. Here they are: LookUpEdit - this is a dropdown that filters the dropdown list as you type. MemoExEdit - this is a textbox that 'pops up' a bigger area when it has focus CheckedComboBoxEdit - this is a dropdown of checkboxes. CheckedListBoxControl - this is a nicely columned list box of checkboxes This is a LOB app that has tons of data entry. In reality, the first two are nice but not essential. The second two are essential in that I would either need to replicate the functionality or change the way the users are interacting with that particular data. I am looking for help in replicating these in a WPF environment with existing controls(codeplex etc) or in straight XAML. Any code or direction would be greatly appreciated but mostly I am hoping to avoid any commercial 3rd party WPF and would instead like to focus on building them myself(but I need direction) or using Codeplex

Still confused about JavaScript's 'this'.

I've been reading through quite a few articles on the 'this' keyword when using JavaScript objects and I'm still somewhat confused. I'm quite happy writing object orientated Javascript and I get around the 'this' issue by referring the full object path but I don't like the fact I still find 'this' confusing. I found a good answer here which helped me but I'm still not 100% sure. So, onto the example. The following script is linked from test.html with <script src="js/test.js"></script> if (!nick) { var nick = {}; } nick.lowman = function(){ var helloA = 'Hello A'; console.log('1.',this, this.helloA); var init = function(){ var helloB = 'Hello B'; console.log('2.',this, this.helloB); } return { init: init } }(); nick.lowman.init(); What kind of expected to see was 1. Object {} nick.lowman, 'Hello A' 2. Object {} init, 'Hello B' But what I get is this? 1. Window test.html, undefined 2. Object {} init, undefined I think I understand some of what's happening there but I would mind if someone out there explains it to me. Also, I'm not entirely sure why the first 'console.log' is being called at all? If I remove the call to the init function //nick.lowman.init() firebug still outputs 1. Window test.html, undefined. Why is that? Why does nick.lowman() get called by the window object when the html page loads? Many thanks

How to arrange models, views, controllers in a new Kohana 3 project

I'm looking at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. Example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about learning the framework soon enough, I'm a bit at a loss on how to arrange a healthy code base from the start - i.e. how to split up controllers, how to name them, and how to separate the functionality into the appropriate models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a main businesses table. Businesses can be listed by category and by street name. Each business has a detail page. Business owners can log in and edit their business's entry. Businesses can post offers into an offers table. I know this is pretty vague, I'll be more than happy to go into more detail on request. Supposing I have all the basic functionality worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended: Do you know real-life, publicly accessible examples of applications built on Kohana 3 where I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know application structuring HOWTOs or best practices for Kohana 3 not mentioned in the user guide and the inofficial Wiki? Have you built something similar and could give me some recommendations?

JSF ui:repeat and f:ajax giving wrong value for h:inputText after rerender.

I have a list of questions and I can display them ok using a ui:repeat, but after clicking the Edit button the rerendered inputText is given the wrong question.id. C# Menu Toolstrip Get Status

So I have a project where there is some automatic initialization going on through some classes that are created automatically as global variables (deah they are static instances). At a point inside this (it has no relation with the C# GUI for the user, so it isn't derived from any C# class) I need to see if a flag is set or not. I use toolstrip menu with checked and unchecked status in order to set or unset the flag. The problem is that I have difficulties to see if the flag is checked or not from this static class. My class is inside a different project/namespace and a DLL is created what later is linked to the GUI of the application. The GUI depends from this Manager class so making the Manager class to depend from the GUI is not an option. Nevertheless, I should be able to see its state knowing its name or through some other means. I have tried the following: if(Application.OpenForms[1].Owner.Controls["useLocalImageForInitToolStripMenuItem"].Enabled) { }; Now the problem is that on the upper code snippet I get a nasty error. So how do I do this?

Pass WPF UserControl reference to another UserControl

I've created two UserControls, a ValidationManager and a ValidationOutput. On a given form there is one ValidationManager and several ValidationOutput controls, one for each control that is validated. The ValidationManager is given a list of validation errors when the form is submitted, I want each ValidationOutput control to look at this list and see if there are any errors relevant to them. The code looks a bit like this: <r:ValidationManager x:Name="myValidationManager" /> ... <TextBox Name="SomeField" /> <r:ValidationOutput FieldName="SomeField" /> I need to pass a reference to the ValidationManager to each of the ValidationOutput controls. I've added a ValidationManager property to the ValidationOutput UserControl but don't know how to pass the reference to the control. I've tried the following but am just clutching at straws: <r:ValidationOutput ValidationManager="myValidationManager" /> ...and... <r:ValidationOutput ValidationManager="{Binding myValidationManager}" /> The first results in an error "Property 'ValidationManager' was not found or is not serializable for type 'ValidationOutput'" and the second "A 'Binding' cannot be set on the 'ValidationManager' property of type 'ValidationControl'. A 'Binding' can only be set on a DependencyProperty of a DependencyObject."

WPF UserControl weird binding problem

Hello! Im usign a Ribbon Window and in the "content area beneath" I have a grid in which I will be displaying UserControls. To demonstrate my problem lets take a look at this simple UserControl: <ListView x:Name="lvPersonList"> <ListView.View> <GridView> <GridViewColumn Width="120" Header="Name" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Name}"/> <GridViewColumn Width="120" Header="Height" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Height}"/> </GridView> </ListView.View> </ListView> And the code: public partial class MyUserControl: UserControl { private List<Person> personList; public TestSnpList() { InitializeComponent(); this.personList = new List<Person>(); this.personList.Add(new Person { Name = "Chuck Norris", Height = 210 }); this.personList.Add(new Person { Name = "John Rambo", Height = 200 }); this.lvPersonList.ItemsSource = personList; } } public class Person { public string Name { get; set; } public int Height { get; set; } } The parent Window: <Grid x:Name="grdContent" DockPanel.Dock="Top"> <controls:MyUserControl x:Name="myUserControl" Visibility="Visible"/> </Grid> I don't understant why this binding doesn't work. Instead of values (Name and Height) I get full class names. If I use this code in a Window it works fine. Any ideas? I know this is inefficient and can be done with a couple of lines of code. It seems like there is a way of saying: when this is clicked, hide the rest. gcc: Do I need -D_REENTRANT with pthreads?

On Linux (kernel 2.6.5) our build system calls gcc with -D_REENTRANT. Is this still required when using pthreads? How is it related to gcc -pthread option? I understand that I should use -pthread with pthreads, do I still need -D_REENTRANT? On a side note, is there any difference that you know off between the usage of REENTRANT between gcc 3.3.3 and gcc 4.x.x ? When I use -pthread gcc option I can see that _REENTRANT gets defined. Will omitting -D_REENTRANT from command line make any difference, for example could some objects be compiled without multithreaded support and then linked into binary that uses pthreads and will cause problems? I assume it should be ok just to use: g++ -pthread > echo | g++ -E -dM -c - > singlethreaded > echo | g++ -pthread -E -dM -c - > multithreaded > diff singlethreaded multithreaded 39a40 > #define _REENTRANT 1 We're compiling multiple static libraries and applications that link with the static libraries, both libraries and application use pthreads. I believe it was required at some stage in the past but want to know if it is still required. Googling hasn't returned any recent information mentioning -D_REENTRANT with pthreads. Could you point me to links or references discussing the use in recent version of kernel/gcc/pthread? Clarification: At the moment we're using -D_REENTRANT and -lpthread, I assume I can replace them with just g++ -pthread, looking at man gcc it sets the flags for both preprocessor and linker. Any thoughts?

GNU Make: How to call $(wildcard) within $(eval)

I'm trying to create a generic build template for my Makefiles, kind of like they discuss in the eval documentation. I can't seem to get the wildcard function to work within an eval. The basic code I'm having issues with looks like this. SRC_DIR = ./src/ PROG_NAME = test define PROGRAM_template $(1)_SRC_DIR = $(join $(SRC_DIR), $(1)/) $(1)_SRC_FILES = $(wildcard $$($(1)_SRC_DIR)*.c) endef $(eval $(call PROGRAM_template, $(PROG_NAME))) all: @echo $(test_SRC_DIR) @echo $(test_SRC_FILES) @echo $(wildcard $(wildcard $(test_SRC_DIR)*.c) When I run make with this, the output is ./src/test [correct list of all .c files in ./src/test/] Basically, the wildcard call within PROGRAM_template is not being eval'd as I expect it. The call results in an empty list. The join call is being eval'd correctly though. So, what am I doing wrong? My guess is that $$($(1)_SRC_DIR) is not correct, but I can't figure out the right way to do it. EDIT Once this was solved, it didn't take long for me to hit another issue with eval. jqgrid not updating data on reload

Any ideas why the data doesn't update? A caching or browser issue perhaps?
