• I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • Can we create a class from a xml file ?

  Hello, Is it possible to create a class dynamically by reading an xml file ( in java preferably) ? if yes, please provide pointers on how to do it. In the process of development, we have come up with a class that has 5 attributes, all these attributes correspond to an entry in the xml file, now if the user adds/modifies the xml entry the object corresponding to it must change automatically, one approach would be generate the source code, before compile time.Is there any other way ? Is there any common pattern to model such changes in the system ? Thanks,

• ChoiceFormat.setChoices confusion about format parameter type and documentation

  From the java.text.ChoiceFormat API: setChoices(double[] limits, String[] formats): Set the choices to be used in formatting. Parameters: limits - contains [...] formats - are the formats you want to use for each limit. They can be either Format objects or Strings. When formatting with object Y, if the object is a NumberFormat, then ((NumberFormat) Y).format(X) is called. Otherwise Y.toString() is called. I'm having difficulties understanding the documentation for the formats parameter: how can you possibly pass a Format/NumberFormat object to setChoices if it's declared String[] formats? Note that interestingly, the getters counterpart of setChoices are declared as follows: double[] getLimits() Object[] getFormats() -- not String[]!!! Is this a bug in the API? Should the setter have been declared setChoices(double[], Object[]) instead, or am I not understanding how to use setChoices correctly?

  Hi, I've problem with Hibernate. I have a class User class User { int id; String name; } where id is native generator in User.hbm.xml , and name is primary-key in DB. In my database , I saved some information about Users. Than, I want to connect with this information about User. For example in my DB i have row INSERT INTO User VALUES ('Bill'); Main.java User bill = new User(); bill.setName("Bill"); session.saveOrUpdate(bill); This code always trying insert bill to database , rather than update when row about Bill exists in DB... • Catching errors in ANTLR and finding parent

  I have found out that I can catch errors during parsing by overwriting displayRecognitionError, but how do I find the parent "node" of this error? ex. if I have the grammar: prog: stat expr; stat: STRING; expr: INTEGER; And give it the input "abc def". Then I will get an error at "def" which should be an integer. At this point I then want to get the parent which is "expr" (since it fails inside the INTEGER part) and it's parent "prog". Kind of like printing stack trace in java. I tried to look at the node from RecognitionException parsed to displayRecognitionError, but it is null, and using CommonErrorNode the parent is null. Should I maybe take a completely different approach?

• Problem saving Text file in database using Hibernate

  I'm having a problem saving large text files to MySQL database. If the text file size is around 5KB it successfully saves. If file is 148KB then I get this error from Hibernate: org.hibernate.exception.DataException: Could not execute JDBC batch update These is the SQL shows by Hibernate: Hibernate: insert into file_table (ID,FILE) values (?, ?) And in my hibernate file I'm using java.sql.Blob to store the file. Anyone knows why it fails to save a file size of 148KB but if I open that same file, cut it down to around 5KB, it will successfully save it? I thought the default limit was I think 2GB? This is weird. Thanks.

• Testing file uploading and downloading speed using FTP

  Hi all, I am working in a desktop application using java. In my application i have to perform a speed test which will show the file uploading and downloading speed. For uploading test i am uploading a small test file to a FTP server and based on time taken i am calculating the file upload speed. similarly i am downloading a test file form server and calculating download speed. But result i am getting doesn't match with actual FTP file uploading and downloading speed.it seems that the establishing connection to FTP server is increasing the time, hence the resultant speed i am calculating is less. Could you suggest any link or some way to get nearest uploading and downloading speed. i thanks to all your valuable suggestion.

Is there a utility method to do this? e.g. for 1,2,3,4,5 post randomization it might be either [1,5,4,2,3 or 2,1,3,5,4 or 3,1,2,4,5 or ...] I would like to know if there is a java utility method / class which already provides this capability?

  hello i have a java applet application in which i use rich text area . i write URDU the national language of PAKISTAN. i managed to do so with uni codes. the problem is, when i write urdu in text area and select a font and color for each line it do all of this but when i save this file using UTF-8 encoding and then open it again it shows all text formatted as i choose format of last line. my requirement is to open file as it is saved. i mean each file should have same formatting as i done before saving.

  I cannot read and write extended characters (French accented characters, for example) to a text file using the standard InputStreamReader methods shown in the Android API examples. When I read back the file using: InputStreamReader tmp = new InputStreamReader(in); BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(tmp); String str; while ((str = reader.readLine()) != null) { ... the string read is truncated at the extended characters instead of at the end-of-line. The second half of the string then comes on the next line. I'm assuming that I need to persist my data as UTF-8 but I cannot find any examples of that, and I'm new to Java. Can anyone provide me with an example or a link to relevant documentation?

• Switch to BigInteger if necessary

  I am reading a text file which contains numbers in the range [1, 10^100]. I am then performing a sequence of arithmetic operations on each number. I would like to use a BigInteger only if the number is out of the int/long range. One approach would be to count how many digits there are in the string and switch to BigInteger if there are too many. Otherwise I'd just use primitive arithmetic as it is faster. Is there a better way? Is there any reason why Java could not do this automatically i.e. switch to BigInteger if an int was too small? This way we would not have to worry about overflows.

  Hi, I am working with XPATH, Java and want to extract some text out of one html page. The text is located under some div with some whitespace characters in between, like &nbsp; <br> etc. I want these to be converted into 'space' and 'newline' respectively while extracting. The method I am using to extract text is Element.getTextContent() which does not respect whitespace characters. Could somebody tell me if there is a way to extract text with whitespace normalization OR Extract whole html markup under the 'Node' so that i could replace it by myself. Thanks Nayn

I know there are some standard mocks available in Spring, but I'd like to be able to mock out my own classes declaratively too. Just to check I'm not going about this the wrong way: the idea is to have a pair of JUnit test and Spring config for each integration test I want to do, mocking everything except the specific integration aspect I'm testing (say I had a dependency on two different data services, test one at a time) and minimising the amount of repeated Java code specifying the mocks.

  Hi Guys, I am using Dojo and making a AJAX call to a JAVA Class and trying to get the output of the program to a Alert box to the client. var showResult = function(result){ console.log("Showing Result()"); var store = new dojo.data.ItemFileReadStore({ data: result}); console.dir(store); store.fetch( { onItem: function(data) { alert("Hie"); }, onError: function(error,request){ alert("ERROR");} }); }; This is my code, showResult basically is call back function from xhr request. I can see console.dir(store) printed onto Firebug but the fetch function always returns the onError block. My store array is of the form {info="Test Message"} and I need to retrieve "Test Message" and display it in a Alert box. Any help?

• Hudson jobs won't call javac?

  Hi, I have just set up Hudson on my server. For some reason, my build will not call javac to compile my builds...? I have set the path to the JDK in the Manage Hudson area, and it seems to recognise it (doesn't give me a warning). Is there something else I'm supposed to do? • Designing a peer to peer network

  I am designing a simple peer to peer network. The basic architecture will be as follows: A central server- that keeps track of all the peers. The job of this server is to keep track of all the peers that join the network. Every peer could do things: a. Download a file from it's peer b. Push a file (send a file) to it's peer. Could anybody please tell me what would be the best design for such a system? What would be the problems that i might run into and so on. I am planning to use Java as the programming language to implement. Would it be a good choice? • How to get back to auto-completion after misspelling of a methodname in Eclipse?

  When I am coding Java in Eclipse I like the auto-completion feature. With that I mean the popup with method-names that comes when you start typing in a method name for an object. Or maybe it's called something different, i.e. method-suggestions? But the popup is hidden if I misspells a method name, and it doesn't come back if I delete the misspelled part of the method name. Is there any way to get back the popup after a misspelling without starting to type in the hole methodname again?

• How to flash the JFrame on Windows taskbar when it needs attention?

  Hi, i'm a computer science student working on a Yahoo Messenger - like program implemented in Java. My problem is that whenever the JTextArea inside my frame contains new message updates, the user must be prompted even when his/her frame is minimized. Is there a workaround on how to make the JFrame on the taskbar blink when updates are received? In short, i badly need a way to notify the user that the frame has been updated even though it is minimized. Is that possible? Thanks for you help. ^_^
