• Facebook database design?

  I have always wondered how Facebook designed the friend <- user relation. I figure the user table is something like this: user_email PK user_id PK password I figure the table with user's data (sex, age etc connected via user email I would assume). How does it connect all the friends to this user? Something like this? user_id friend_id_1 friend_id_2 friend_id_3 friend_id_N Probably not. Because the number of users is unknown and will expand.

• Fetch posts with attachments in a certain category?

  I need to retreive a list of posts that have (at least) one attachment that belongs to a category in WordPress. The relation between attachments and categories I made by myself using the WordPress default method. Here's the query that i'm running right now: SELECT p.* FROM `wp_posts` AS p # The post INNER JOIN `wp_posts` AS a # The attachment ON p.`ID` = a.`post_parent` AND a.`post_type` = 'attachment' INNER JOIN `wp_term_relationships` AS ra ON a.`ID` = ra.`object_id` AND ra.`term_taxonomy_id` IN (3) # The category ID list WHERE p.`post_type` = 'post' ORDER BY p.`post_date` DESC LIMIT 15 The problem here is that the query only use the first found attachment, and if it doesn't belongs to the category, the result isn't returned.

  Hi, I'm trying make a query that looks at a single table and looks to see if a student is a team called CMHT and in a medic team - if they are I don't want to see the result. I only want see if there only in CMHT or medic not both. Would the right direction be using sub query to filer it out? I've done a search on NOT IN but how could you get to see check if its in more then 2 teams are not? Student Team ref 1 CMHT 1 1 Medic 2 2 Medic 3 this would be in the result 3 CMHT 5 this would be in the result So far I've done the following code would I need use a sub query or do a self join and filter it that way? Is there a way to search both columns with only one input box? • Analysis services with non normalized table

  I have a table with several million rows. Each row represents a user session. There is a column called user which is not unique. There can be multiple sessions per user. I want to use Analysis services to get me the additional properties per user. Example: How many users (unique!) had a session longer than x minutes. How is that possible without changing the database. Note: there is no lookup-table and I cannot create one. What I am able of at the moment is to ask how many sessions were longer then x minutes.

  Hello Guys, Im trying to query a sort of from - to date. e.g. 20-01-2010 to 20-02-2010. this should include the mentioned dates. i've tried the following queries but none works. select * from [tableName] where date = '20-01-2010' AND date <= '20-02-2010' the date where date is equal to 20-02-2010 does not show. i don't know why. select * from [tableName] where date between '20-01-2010' AND '20-02-2010' the mentioned dates is not included in the results. i want it to be included in the results. please help. thanks in advance! :)

• MySQL - Finding time overlaps

  Hi, I have 2 tables in the database with the following attributes: Booking ======= booking_id booking_start booking_end resource_booked =============== booking_id resource_id The second table is an associative entity between "Booking" and "Resource" (i.e., 1 booking can contain many resources). Attributes booking_start and booking_end are timestamps with date and time in it. May I know how I might be able to find out for each resource_id (resource_booked) if the date/time overlaps or clashes with other bookings of similar resource_id? I was doodling the answer on paper, pictorially, to see if it might help me visualize how I could solve this and I got this: Joining the 2 tables (Booking, Booked_resource) into one table with the 4 attributes needed.   i try to install moodle web software...i m using wamp server and sqlserver 2005 version. i install php driver for php5.3.0 thread safe version..i just paste that php_sqlsrv_ts.dll driver file into my php ext directory...i include this line extension=php_sqlsrv_ts.dll in my php.ini file... now i restart my wampserver...i m getting this error... • SQL2008 merge replication fails to update depdendent items when table is added

  Setup: an existing SQL2008 merge replication scenario. A large server database, including views and stored procs, being replicated to client machines. What I'm doing: * adding a new table to the database * mark the new table for replication (using SP_AddMergeArticle) * alter a view (which is already part of the replicated content) is updated to include fields from this new table (which is joined to the tables in the existing view). A stored procedure is similarly updated. The problem: the table gets replicated to client machines, but the view is not updated. The stored procedure is also not updated. Non-useful workaround: if I run the snapshot agent after calling SP_AddMergeArticle and before updating the view/SP, both the view and the stored procedure changes correctly replicate to the client. The bigger problem: I'm running a list of database scripts in a transaction, as part of a larger process. The snapshot agent can't be run during a transaction, and if I interrupt the transaction (e.g. by running the scripts in multiple transactions), I lose the ability to roll back the changes should something fail. Does anyone have any suggestions? It seems like I must be missing something obvious, because I don't see why the changes to the view/sproc wouldn't be replicating anyway, regardless of what's going on with the new table.

  Hi! I read something like this about db views: Views are incredibly powerful and useful for one reason that stands out above all the other very good reasons. They reduce code duplication. That is, in most cases, the bottom line. If a query will be used in three or more places, then a view will drastically simplify your changes if the schema or query parameters change. I once had to edit 22 stored procedures to change some query logic. If the original architecture had utilized views, then I would have had only three changes. Can anyone explain to me how it works, and maybe give me some examples? Best regards!

• Struggling to create correct relationships in MS Access

So for example: the unit 'Advanced Software Engineering' maybe a core unit for the award 'Software Engineering BSc' but only an optional unit for the course 'Web Technology BSc'. I've used flags for that purpose. A student is enrolled on an award so I need to get a complete list of core and optional units (bearing in mind that a student chooses 1 out of many possible optional units). Also, these units have events, e.g, a lecture, workshop or seminar, etc. and those events have sessions or instances of events where students enrolled on that particular unit are required to attend, and those attendances are stored in a separate table to form a register. So I need a hierarchy of expanding the tables something like this I guess: Awards - Students - Units - Sessions - Attendances Any help with this would be appreciated... It's blowing my mind and I'm really close to going insane! My tutor didn't spot I'd got it wrong when I showed my original data model to him and it's due in next week! Thank you :D

• SQLce Select query problem

  Wrote a Truck show Contest voting app, financial etc using sqlite. decided to write backup app for show day using ce 3.5. Created db moved to data directory, created tables configured dgridviews all is well. Entered some test data started management studio 08 ran select query against table and got null returns. Started app from vs studio and found that test data is gone. Re entered data ran query in MS data gone again. If I use VS Studio can start and enter data, close app restart and data is still there, seems only when using outside tool on select query data deletes. I don't know ce that well but this cannot be right. select * from votes = delete * from votes??????????????
