  • What You Said: Staying Productive While Working from home

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your telecommuting/work-from-home productivity tips. Now we’re back with a tips and tricks roundup; read on to see how your fellow readers stay focused at home. By far and away the most common technique deployed as carefully isolating work from home life. Carol writes: I love working from home and have done so for 6 years now. I have a routine just as if I was going to an office, except my commute is 12 steps. I get ready for work, grab my purse and smart phone and go to up the steps to my office. I maintain a separate phone line and voice mail for work that I cannot answer from anywhere but my work desk. I use call forwarding when I travel so only my office phone number is published. I have VOIP phone service so I can forward calls from the internet if I forget, or need to change where the phone is forwarded. I do have a wired and wireless head set so I can go get a cold drink if on one of those long boring conference calls. I plan my ‘get off from work’ time and try to stick to it, as with any job some days I am late getting off, but it all works out. I make sure my office is for work only, any other computer play time is in a different part of the house on different computer. My office has laptop, dock, couple of monitors, multipurpose printer, fax, scanner, file cabinets – just like the office at a company. I just also happen to have a couple of golden retrievers that come to work with me and usually lay quietly until 5, and yes they know it is 5pm sometimes before I do. For me, one of the biggest concerns when working from home is not being unproductive, but the danger of never stopping work. You could keep going and going because let’s face it – the company will let you do it, so I set myself up to prevent that and maintain a separateness. • SDL 2.0: is there a library to create 2D particle effects rapidly?

    - by mm24
I would like to create an light/explosion particle effect using some in built library. I am used to Cocos2D where there are specific classes that you can simply initialize in a certain position and producing a certain particle effect. Is there a way to do so in SDL 2.0 C++? I have found this tutorial but it seems to go for a "build it yoursefl" solution, which is ok but I do not want to re-invent the wheel if someone else has already built it.

  • How do I determine whether bumblebee is working as expected?

    - by Christian Fazzini
I followed the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update Instead of installing the proprietary nvidia drivers, via: sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia linux-headers-generic I did: sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends bumblebee linux-headers-generic How do I determine that power savings mode is active and that my dedicated GPU isn't running? One thing that bugs me is that if I go to System Settings - Details - Graphics. Driver is shown as Unknown.

  • Htaccess 301 redirect dynamic URL

    - by Jarede
I don't know a whole lot about .htaccess rules so forgive and help me ask the correct question. Currently I have a .htaccess rule like: RewriteRule ^surveys/(\S+)/directory/(\d+)/(\d+)/entry/(\d+)/?$ directories/index.cfm?sFuseAction=XXX.YYYY.ZZZZ&nDirectoryID=$2&nEntryID=$4&nCategoryID=$3&sDirectory=$1 [NC,L] which I want to do a 301 redirect to: RewriteRule ^(\S+)/directory/(\d+)/(\d+)/entry/(\d+)/?$ directories/index.cfm?sFuseAction=XXX.YYYY.ZZZZ&nDirectoryID=$2&nEntryID=$4&nCategoryID=$3&sDirectory=$1 [NC,L] I'm unsure of the correct syntax to go about making these redirect correctly.

  • 12.10: login screen never goes blank

    - by Marciano Siniscalchi
I have installed the 12.10 beta (with all updates) on my iMac Early 2008. One annoying problem I'm having is that, when I log out of my account and go back to the login screen (lightdm, per default), the screen stays on: it never goes blank. This is not good for my display I guess! The screensaver (set to just a blank screen) works just fine when I'm logged in. The problem only appears at the login screen. Any ideas?

  • Configuring trace file size and number in WebCenter Content 11g

    - by Kyle Hatlestad
Lately I've been doing a lot of debugging using the System Output tracing in WebCenter Content 11g.  This is built-in tracing in the content server which provides a great level of detail on what's happening under the hood.  You can access the settings as well as a view of the tracing by going to Administration -> System Audit Information.  From here, you can select the tracing sections to include.  Some of my personal favorites are searchquery,  systemdatabase, userstorage, and indexer.  Usually I'm trying to find out some information regarding a search, database query, or user information.  Besides debugging, it's also very helpful for performance tuning. One of the nice tricks with the tracing is it honors the wildcard (*) character.  So you can put in 'schema*' and gather all of the schema related tracing.  And you can notice if you select 'all' and update, it changes to just a *.   To view the tracing in real-time, you simply go to the 'View Server Output' page and the latest tracing information will be at the bottom. This works well if you're looking at something pretty discrete and the system isn't getting much activity.  But if you've got a lot of tracing going on, it would be better to go after the trace log file itself.  By default, the log files can be found in the <content server instance directory>/data/trace directory. You'll see it named 'idccs_<managed server name>_current.log.  You may also find previous trace logs that have rolled over.  In this case they will identified by a date/time stamp in the name.  By default, the server will rotate the logs after they reach 1MB in size.  And it will keep the most recent 10 logs before they roll off and get deleted.  If your server is in a cluster, then the trace file should be configured to be local to the node per the recommended configuration settings. If you're doing some extensive tracing and need to capture all of the information, there are a couple of configuration flags you can set to control the logs. #Change log size to 10MB and number of logs to 20FileSizeLimit=10485760FileCountLimit=20 This is set by going to Admin Server -> General Configuration and entering them in the Additional Configuration Variables: section.  Restart the server and it should take on the new logging settings.

  • Winning With Long Tail Keywords - Become an Authority in Your Niche

Most accomplished webmasters and SEO experts will mirror my words here. Winning in the long tail is essential to becoming an authority in your niche. So, what can you do in order to dominate your niche and become an authority?
