• which one consume less resources? opening text file or make an sql query,both a thousand times ?

  hi I've a php website which displays recipes www.trymasak.my, to be exact. The recipes being displayed at the index page is updated about once a day. To get the latest recipes, I just use a mysql query which is something like "select recipe_name, page_views, image from table order by last_updated". So if I got 10000 visitors a day, obviously the query would be made 10000 times a day. A friend told me a better way (in terms of reducing server load) is when I update the recipes, I just put in the latest recipe details (names,images etc) into a text file, and make my page instead of querying a same query for 10,000 times, just get the data from the text file. Is his suggestion really better? If yes, which is the best php command should I use to open, read and close the text file? thanks

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday post on Logging. When someone talks about logging, personally I get lots of ideas about it. I have seen logging as a very generic term. Let me ask you this question first before I continue writing about logging. What is the first thing comes to your mind when you hear word “Logging”? Now ask the same question to the guy standing next to you. I am pretty confident that you will get  a different answer from different people. I decided to do this activity and asked 5 SQL Server person the same question. Question: What is the first thing comes to your mind when you hear the word “Logging”? Strange enough I got a different answer every single time. Let me just list what answer I got from my friends. Let us go over them one by one. Output Clause The very first person replied output clause. Pretty interesting answer to start with. I see what exactly he was thinking. SQL Server 2005 has introduced a new OUTPUT clause. OUTPUT clause has access to inserted and deleted tables (virtual tables) just like triggers. OUTPUT clause can be used to return values to client clause. OUTPUT clause can be used with INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE to identify the actual rows affected by these statements. The error log is the most looked place when there is any error either with the application or there is an error with the operating system. I have kept the policy to check my server’s error log every day. The reason is simple – enough time in my career I have figured out that when I am looking at error logs I find something which I was not expecting. There are cases, when I noticed errors in the error log and I fixed them before end user notices it. Other common practices I always tell my DBA friends to do is that when any error happens they should find relevant entries in the error logs and document the same. It is quite possible that they will see the same error in the error log  and able to fix the error based on the knowledge base which they have created. There can be many different kinds of error log files exists in SQL Server as well – 1) SQL Server Error Logs 2) Windows Event Log 3) SQL Server Agent Log 4) SQL Server Profile Log 5) SQL Server Setup Log etc. Here are some references for Error Logs: Recycle Error Log – Create New Log file without Server Restart SQL Error Messages Change Data Capture I got surprised with this answer. I think more than the answer I was surprised by the person who had answered me this one. I always thought he was expert in HTML, JavaScript but I guess, one should never assume about others. Indeed one of the cool logging feature is Change Data Capture. Change Data Capture records INSERTs, UPDATEs, and DELETEs applied to SQL Server tables, and makes a record available of what changed, where, and when, in simple relational ‘change tables’ rather than in an esoteric chopped salad of XML. These change tables contain columns that reflect the column structure of the source table you have chosen to track, along with the metadata needed to understand the changes that have been made. If asked I would have not come up with DMV right away but in the spirit of the original question, I think DMV does log the data. DMV logs or stores or records the various data and activity on the SQL Server. Dynamic management views return server state information that can be used to monitor the health of a server instance, diagnose problems, and tune performance. This should be probably the first answer. Yes, indeed log file logs the SQL Server activities. One can write infinite things about log file. SQL Server uses log file with the extension .ldf to manage transactions and maintain database integrity. Log file ensures that valid data is written out to database and system is in a consistent state. Log files are extremely useful in case of the database failures as with the help of full backup file database can be brought in the desired state (point in time recovery is also possible). SQL Server database has three recovery models – 1) Simple, 2) Full and 3) Bulk Logged. Each of the model uses the .ldf file for performing various activities. It is very important to take the backup of the log files (along with full backup) as one never knows when backup of the log file come into the action and save the day!   Possible Duplicate: Please insert a disk into SD/MMC - Vista problem Hi I tried pushing my 2GB micro SD card using the inbuilt card reader. On clicking the drive I get "Please insert a disk into SD/MMC". This problem is really frustrating. The card works fine on other computers so does the microSD to SD attachment. I have done following o fix. - Updated Vista and installed SP1. - Updated the TI drivers for FlashDrive. - Checked Vaio site for updates (none required). - Added a new entry HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlS* et001\Services\tifm21\Parameters/SDParam=1 took the hint from (http://tinyurl.com/nk33tp) I have restarted the PC multiple times. As soon as I put the card in, the SD/MMC device icon blips, so it seems the hardware is at least detecting something. The card reader was working fine few days back. I guess some windows update has broken something, does any one have any idea on how to proceed. MY laptop is VGN-N365E.

• Vim move cursor one character in insert mode without arrow keys

  This might seem a little too overboard, but I switched to vim and I so happy about the workflow now. I try to discipline myself not to use the arrow keys, as keeping the hands on the alfa-keys all the time is such a big thing when writing. So when I need to navigate I get out of insert mode, move in normal mode and get back in insert mode. There is an exception where this is actually more disrupting: I use clang complete with snippets and super tab which is great. Except every time I get a function auto completed after I fill in the parameters I am left with the cursor before ) so to continue I have to move the cursor one character to the right. As you can imagine this happens very often. The only options I have (as far as I know) are : Escla or ?, and I am not happy about neither of them. The first one makes me hit 3 keys for just a simple 1 character cursor move, the second one makes me move my hand to the arrow keys. A third option would be to map CTRL-L or smth to ?.   This is a complicated situation (for me) that I'm hopeful someone on here can help me with. I've done plenty of searching for a solution and have not been able to locate one. This is essentially my situation... (I've trimmed it down because if someone can help me to create this query I can take it from there.) TABLE articles (article_id, article_title) TABLE articles_tags (row_id, article_id, tag_id) TABLE article_categories (row_id, article_id, category_id) All of the tables have article_id in common. I know what all of the tag_id and category_id rows are. What I want to do is return a list of all the articles that article_tags and article_categories MAY have in common, ordered by the number of common entries. For example: article1 - tags: tag1, tag2, tag3 - categories: cat1, cat2 article2 - tags: tag2 - categories: cat1, cat2 article3 - tags: tag1, tag3 - categories: cat1 So if my article had "tag1" and "cat1 and cat2" it should return the articles in this order: article1 (tag1, cat1 and cat2 in common) article3 (tag1, cat1 in common) article2 (cat1 in common) Any help would genuinely be appreciated!   Hi there, I'm trying to wrap my head around mongoose, but I'm having a hard time finding any kind of documentation for some of the more advanced query options, specifically the .in and .sort methods. What's the syntax for sorting, for example, a Person by age? db.model("Person").find().sort(???).all(function(people) { }); Then, let's say I want to find a Movie based on a genre, where a Movie can have many genres (in this case, an array of strings). Presumably, I'd use the .in function to accomplish that, but I'm not sure what the syntax would be. Or perhaps I don't have to use the .in method at all...? Either way, I'm lost. db.model("Movie").find().in(???).all(function(movies) { }); Anyone have any ideas? Or even better, a link to some comprehensive documentation? Thanks! Chris

  I have been reading about Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS). I sort of wonder how would this work with ASP.NET MVC? I get the idea of CQRS conceptually it sounds nice and sure does introduce some complexities (event and messaging pattern) compared to the "normal/common" approach . Also the idea of CQRS sort of against the use of ORM in some ways. I am trying to think how I could use this pattern in the coming projects so if anyone has experience in combining CQRS with ASP.NET MVC and NHibernate please give some concrete examples to help me better understand CQRS and use with ASP.NET MVC. • What's the best way to match a query to a set of keywords?

  Pretty much what you would assume Google does. Advertisers come in and big on keywords, lets say "ipod", "ipod nano", "ipod 60GB", "used ipod", etc. Then we have a query, "I want to buy an ipod nano" or "best place to buy used ipods" what kind of algorithms and systems are used to match those queries to the keyword set. I would imagine that some of those keyword sets are huge, 100k keywords made up of one or more actual words. on top of that queries can be 1-n words as well. Any thoughts, links to wikipedia I can start reading? From what I know already I would use some stemmed hash in disk(CDB?) and a bloom filter to check to see if I should even go to disk.

  Currently I'm working on a case where we don't want to change to much on a c#/wpf program, but like to add a feature. Currently we allow certain users to add sql queries to a database to retrieve customer data, hereby a custom connection string/ provider name must be specified. With this information it's possible to create the connection and obtain the data with c#. However we like to add the possibility to allow that user group to query XML files too, with a certain connection string/ provider name. I just had a look for possibities in .net to do that, but can't seem to find a decent way... Is something like this possible? (OleDb/ODBC way maybe?) Thanks in advance.

  I'm setting up my geolocation feature which lists out all the countries in order of name. However, most websites have it set up where the popular countries (such as United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia) are at the front of the list (are shown first rather than in their assigned places). Is it possible to achieve this using the same MySQL query that I am already running to select them? SELECT * FROM `global_flags` ORDER BY `country` Is there a better alternative somewhere? Perhaps something that can reorganize the results after the database has already been queried? I don't want to exclude those results and then manually type them at the beginning because that would waste more space in the file.

Well the problem is sometimes the cheque might not have any information in it. So how do i get MYSQL to ignore that table and still continue displaying the rest of the information? thanks!

• Why is Postgres doing a Hash in this query?

  I have two tables: A and P. I want to get information out of all rows in A whose id is in a temporary table I created, tmp_ids. However, there is additional information about A in the P table, foo, and I want to get this info as well. I have the following query: SELECT A.H_id AS hid, A.id AS aid, P.foo, A.pos, A.size FROM tmp_ids, P, A WHERE tmp_ids.id = A.H_id AND P.id = A.P_id I noticed it going slowly, and when I asked Postgres to explain, I noticed that it combines tmp_ids with an index on A I created for H_id with a nested loop. However, it hashes all of P before doing a Hash join with the result of the first merge. P is quite large and I think this is what's taking all the time. Why would it create a hash there? P.id is P's primary key, and A.P_id has an index of its own.

  Hi, on one of my web pages I want my manager user to view all activities assigned to them (personally). In order to do this, I need something like this: $sql = "SELECT * FROM activities WHERE manager = $_SESSION['SESS_FULLNAME']"; Now obviously this syntax is all wrong, but because I am new to this stuff, is there a way I can call up the full name from the user's session within a query? This is so that when I call up the database values to be displayed within the web page, only the activities for the manager who is logged in is displayed. For example, the activities table has a manager column of a full name entry. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

• Is there a way to split the results of a select query into two equal halfs?

  I'd like to have a query returning two ResultSets each of which holding exactly half of all records matching a certain criteria. I tried using TOP 50 PERCENT in conjunction with an Order By but if the number of records in the table is odd, one record will show up in both resultsets. Example: I've got a simple table with TheID (PK) and TheValue fields (varchar(10)) and 5 records. Skip the where clause for now. SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID asc results in the selected id's 1,2,3 SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID desc results in the selected id's 3,4,5 3 is a dup. In real life of course the queries are fairly complicated with a ton of where clauses and subqueries.

I have tried SELECT recipe_id FROM uses_ingredient INNER JOIN (SELECT * FROM ingredient WHERE name="Chicken" OR name="Cream") USING (name) GROUP BY recipe_id HAVING COUNT(recipe_id) >= (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM theme); which gives me :"ERROR 1248 (42000): Every derived table must have its own alias" and is probably wrong too. Next I tried SELECT recipe_id FROM (SELECT * FROM ingredient WHERE name="Chicken" OR name="Cream") AS t INNER JOIN uses_ingredient USING (name) GROUP BY recipe_id HAVING COUNT(recipe_id)>= (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM t); which gives "ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table 'recipedb.t' doesn't exist" I want to avoid creating temporary tables including using ENGINE=MEMORY.

  I saw somewhere what seemed to be nested selects, one "master" select on the "outside" and a series of selects inside- is this possible? I'm not talking about joins as there is particular relation between the selects. I seem not to be explaining myself very well. I want to do a single query which will pull out a series of stats from various tables latest order, latest customer, largest order. Obviously I can do that with a series of selects. The example I saw was something like select ( select ... from tbl_1 where .., select ... from tbl_2 where .., select ... from tbl_3 where .., ... )

• SQL SERVER – Generate Database Script for SQL Azure

  When talking about SQL Azure the common complain I hear is that the script generated from stand-along SQL Server database is not compatible with SQL Azure. This was true for some time for sure but not any more. If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed you can follow the guideline below to generate script which is compatible with SQL Azure. As above images are very clear I will not write more about them. SQL Azure does not support filegroups. Let us generate script for any table created on PRIMARY filegroup for standalong SQL Server and compare it with the script generated for SQL Azure. You can clearly see that there is no filegroup in the code generated for SQL Azure. Give it a try and please your comment here about what do you think about the same.
