• How to simulate a file read error in the CRT

  Using VS2008, we would like to simulate a file that has a size of X, but that has a read failure at X-Y bytes, so that we get an error indication. Anyone have an idea of how to do this on windows? Looks like there is a solution for linux, but I can't really come up with a way to do this on windows. We have multiple developers, multiple machines, and cppunit testing framework, so I want a software only design. I'm trying to simulate the actual CRT failing, so I can test the code that is dealing with the failure.

• Difference in DLL when compiling on Build Server instead of Dev Machine.

  I have an application that loads user controls into .NET web application. When I compile and test the application locally on my dev machine it works on my machine. The project builds successfully using MSBuild on our build server. However when I deploy the dll generated by MSBuild on the build server I get the following error when the application loads the control: BC30456: 'CreateResourceBasedLiteralControl' is not a member of 'ASP.usercontrols_somecontrol_ascx'. I took a look and compared the dll generated on my machine and compared it(looked at the file size) with the one created by the build server and noticed a difference in the file size. This is confusing considering the code being built locally and on the build server is IDENTICAL. I manually compared each file by hand. So my question is: What is causing this error? What would be different between MSBuild's compilation of the code and what is going on in Visual Studio when compiling the code?

• Can the behaviour of new HTML5 form types be overridden?

  I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to override the default behaviour of browsers that support the new HTML input types such as type="email" and type="date"? I appreciate that I could test if a browser supports an input type and provide a fallback for those browsers that don't, but what I want to know is is there any way to prevent that default behaviour from happening in browsers that do support it? For instance, if in Opera I want to use the date input type, but I don't want Opera to display the native datepicker (i.e. I want to replace it with my own custom one) is that possible? Are there any DOM events triggered like onDatePickerShow that one can hook into? I don't believe that this is possible, but if anyone knows for sure one way or the other I would love to hear from you.

• WPF data grid - Column Header not aligned with data rows

  Hi, I am using Datagrid in WPF. This is a very simple and basic implementation. I not using any styles. I created a simple datagrid : <dg:DataGrid x:Name="dg" > </dg:DataGrid> and populated it with data as: dg.ItemsSource = " H E L L O W O R L D!".Split(); Grid gets properly populated but the columnheader of the grid is drawn with some offset. Due to this my data and header are mis aligned. I tried searching for this over net but I haven't found anything. This seems to be a straightforward implementation which is working for everyone except me :(. Can anyone please tell me what might be going wrong? I have tried using different data sets and appyling some style to test this. Thanks in advance.

• run windows command from bash with output to standard out?

  Folks, I'm using git tools such as git bisect run which need to call a command to build and test my project. My command to do is nant which is a windows program. Or a build.cmd script which calls nant. It's easy to get the bash to call the nant build to run. But the hard part is how to get the standard output written to a file? I even installed the Windows PowerShell to try running a command from bash. Again, it works but the standard output fill says "permission denied" when I try to read it while the build is going on.

  Hi, Want to create a directory on windows from a PHP script. My script is in www/Test directory of Apache and want to create a folder(fold1) inside www/downloads directory. Inside the script, using, $dirName = "../downloads/fold1"; mkdir("{$dirName}"); If we use the full path of dirName like C:\Apache\www\downloads\fold1, it works fine. • Hosting a WCF service in a Windows service. Works, but I can't reach it from Silverlight.

  I've made me an application hosted WCF service for my Silverlight application to consume. When I host the WCF service in a forms application everything works fine. But when I host my WCF service in a windows service (as explained brilliantly here) I get the dreaded 'NotFound' Web Exception when I call it from Silverlight. The 'WCF Test Client' tool does not complain. I'm' exposing a decent clientaccesspolicy.xml at root. Yet Silverlight won't have it. I'm stumped. Anybody have an idea about what could be going on here?

• sqlite compiler errors

  Hello, when including "sqlite.c" into my project, I get lots of compiler errors: error C2027: use of undefined type "_ht" d:\...\sqlite3.c line 19556 ... fatal error C1003: Errors in the program are too numerous to allow recovery. The compiler must terminate. When inlcuding "sqlite.c" into an empty test project, I have no problems. I already compared project settings and there are no big differences. How can I troubleshoot this problem? Is there anyone who had the same issue? Thanks, mspoerr

• Is using jquery to call a WCF Data Service from the UI violating the MVC pattern.

  I'm fairly new to ASP.Net MVC 2 and understand the MVC pattern in itself. But my question is what's the best way to populate dropdownlists in the UI sticking to the MVC pattern. Should I be going through the controller? Every article I've seen to do this shows how to do it using javascript and jquery. I have a test application that I'm re-writing in MVC2 I have my dropdowns working with jquery basically calling a WCF Data Service that returns JSON which populates the dropdowns. Seems to me though that this is bypassing the controller and going straight to the model therefore strictly violating the MVC pattern. Or am I missing something obvious here. You thoughts or best practices would be greatly welcome here. Thanks

• Singleton code linker errors in vc 9.0. Runs fine in linux compiled with gcc

  I have a simple logger that is implemented as a singleton. It works like i want when I compile and run it with g++ in linux but when I compile in Visual Studio 9.0 with vc++ I get the following errors. Is there a way to fix this? • Reading correctly alphanumeric fields into R

  A tab-delimited text file, which is actually an export (using bcp) of a database table, is of that form: 102 1 01 e113c 3224.96 12 102 1 01 e185 101127.25 12 102 2 01 e185 176417.90 12 102A 3 01 e185 26261.03 12 I tried to import it in R with a command like data <- read.delim("C:\\test.txt", header = FALSE, sep = "\t") The problem is that the 3rd column which is actually a varchar field (alphanumeric) is mistakenly read as integer (as there are no letters in the entire column) and the leading zeros disappeared. The same thing happened when I imported the data directly from the database, using odbcConnect. Again that column was read as integer. str(data) $ code: int 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 1 1 8 ... How can I import such a dataset in R correctly, so as to be able to safely populate that db table again, after doing some data manipulations?

  How can I make an app or maybe service that looks like (Nexus One touch buttons) for the navigation keys (Home, menu,Back, Search) The buttons should always be visibly and always stay on top and send the command to the app thats running. Someone have ideas and sample codes how to do that? * I see an app with name (Smart Taskmanager) wich always detect when you touch the right side of the screen and then detect when you slide the finger to left. So I think its possible, with this function I think its possible to implementate the code to simulate the (Home, Meny, Back, Search) buttons. * I also see and test an app wich show a "cracked display" always ontop so that tecnic maybe shold be useful to always show the buttons/bitmanp on top. Thoose function, to show the button and catch the "touch event" and send the event to the active program, thats what i dont can figure out how to do. Thats my thought!   Do you know of any agile process that is created for code releases? One of the main theme of agile is frequent releases and each company/client would have their own test/approval processes that control code releases. Most of the time these slow down the pace of "frequent releases" Currently we have a proprietary tool based workflow. The team who needs a code promotion needs to create a promotion request to one of the final UAT servers. Once this is complete, and once tests are done, certain customers, technical/non-technical managers need to approve, then it goes in to production deploy stage. Meanwhile no sprint planning meeting or anything of that sort. What is the code release process (Which is agile) that has worked for you?

  I have a dynamically generated form that allows users to enter new data and edit existing data. When the form is submitted, it collates the input values and groups them according to whether they are new or not, the former being denoted by class="new-entry". So the function generates two arrays: updateData and insertData. Both arrays are of similar formats: [ 0: { 'id' = 1, 'value' = foo }, 1: { 'id' = 1, 'value' = 'bar' }, etc... ] I am combining them into a new array object to send via ajax to the controller: var postData = { 'update_data': updateData, 'insert_data': insertData }; Then in the ajax call: $.post(url, postData, function() { // some code }); However, in the controller, doing print_r($this->input->post()) or print_r($_POST) as a test only returns Array(). Even $this->input->post('update_data') returns nothing. How can I retrieve these arrays in the controller?

  I have a list of Accommodation objects bound to a Repeater, and then a nested Repeater which has the various attendee groups listed [e.g. Default, Seniors, Juniors]. This is all output fine, with the values displayed as LinkButtons, which when clicked gets sent to a code-behind event handler. Here is an example of the output to give you a picture [with some er... interesting attendee group names]: In the event handler, I test the object parameter to see which Repeater has been sent, as the outer repeater's links can also be clicked [so the Accommodation would be set, but no Attendee Group]. Is there a way to get a HiddenField from the outer RepeaterItem that contains the currently clicked inner repeater's LinkButton? E.g. From the image, I click the Attending link in the Women section. So the EventArgs via FindControl can get me the hidden field which contains the Attendee Group's ID, which is good, but I also need the Accommodation ID [to know whether it was either Wimbledon Hotel Inn or New Acc]

And would also like to use a program with OPOS standards, so that it will work with all kinds of POS system. I looked into MS POS .Net and and samples from MONORECS and still not clear on how to accomplish this. • ASP.net MVC [HandleError] not catching exceptions.

  In two different application, one a custom the other the sample MVC application you get with a new VS2008 MVC project, [HandleError] is not catching exceptions. In the sample application I have: [HandleError] public class HomeController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { ViewData["Message"] = "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC!"; throw new Exception(); return View(); } public ActionResult About() { return View(); } } which is just the default controller with an exception being thrown for testing. But it doesn't work. Instead of going to the default error.aspx page it shows the debug information in the browser. The problem first cropped up in a custom application I'm working on which led me to test it with the sample application. Thinking it had something to do with changes I made in the custom application, I left the sample application completely unchanged with the exception (yuck) of the throw in the index method. I'm stumped. What am I missing?

• How to store an object in Riak with the Java client?

  I have setup Riak on a Ubuntu machine, and it seam to work if I do riak ping. Now I would like to use the Riak Java client to store an object, but it doesn't work. I get com.basho.riak.client.response.RiakIORuntimeException when I try to store an object. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to test if I can access riak from my java client?
