  • How can I refactor client side functionality to create a product line-like generic design?

    - by Nupul
    Assume the following situation similar to that of Stack Overflow: I have a system with a front-end that can perform various manipulations on the data (by sending messages to REST back-end): Posting Editing and deleting Adding labels and tags Now in the first version we created it well modularized but the need as of now for 'evolving' the system similar to Stack Overflow. My question is how best to separate the commonality and how to incorporate the variability with respect to the following: Commonality: The above 'functionalities' and sending/receiving the data from the server Look and feel (also a variability as explained below) HTTP verbs associated with the above actions Variability: The RESTful URLs where the requests are sent The text/style of the UI (the commonality is analogous to Stack Overflow - the functionality of upvotes, posting a question remains the same, but the words, the icons, the look and feel is still different across sites) I think this is entirely a client-side code organization/refactoring issue. I'm heavily using jQuery, javascript and backbone for front-end development. My question is how best should I isolate the same to be able to create multiple such aspects to the tool we are currently working on?

Could somebody explain how? note, I edited the question before posting the solution.

  • Ajax doesn't trigger a change-event on a webkit based browser

    - by user319464
    I have adapted a Jquery plugin to for-fill my needs to send GET requests to servers as a way of "pinging" them. I've also added some javascript code to add some fancy features like: depending on the changed value in a that the Jquery plugin changes, it changes the Icon accordingly. To make it all work essentially, I made so that when Ajax gets a "complete" event, it forces a "onChange" event to the span, triggering the javascript validation function to change the status icons. Here is the code of my slightly modified jQuery Plugin: /** * ping for jQuery * * Adapted by Carroarmato0 (to actually work instead of randomly "pinging" nowhere instead of faking * * @auth Jessica * @link http://www.skiyo.cn/demo/jquery.ping/ * */ (function($) { $.fn.ping = function(options) { var opts = $.extend({}, $.fn.ping.defaults, options); return this.each(function() { var ping, requestTime, responseTime ; var target = $(this); var server = target.html(); target.html('<img src="img/loading.gif" alt="loading" />'); function ping() { $.ajax({url: 'http://' + server, type: 'GET', dataType: 'html', timeout: 30000, beforeSend : function() { requestTime = new Date().getTime(); }, complete : function() { responseTime = new Date().getTime(); ping = Math.abs(requestTime - responseTime); if (ping > 2000) { target.text('niet bereikbaar'); } else { target.text(ping + opts.unit); } target.change(); } }); } ping(); opts.interval != 0 && setInterval(ping,opts.interval * 1000); }); }; $.fn.ping.defaults = { interval: 3, unit: 'ms' }; })(jQuery); target.change(); is the code that triggers the "onchange" event in the span: echo " <td class=\"center\"><span id=\"ping$pingNb\" onChange=\"checkServerIcon(this)\" >" .$server['IP'] . "</span></td>"; In Firefox this works, checkServerIcon(this) gets executed and passes the span object to the function. function checkServerIcon(object) { var delayText = object.innerHTML; var delay = delayText.substring(0, delayText.length - 2); if ( isInteger(delay) ) { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/enable_server.png'; } else { if (delay == "bezig.") { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/search_server.png'; } else { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/desable_server.png'; } } } My guess would be that there's something different in WebKit browsers in the way object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode. .... works...

  • twitter bootstrap typeahead ajax example

    - by emeraldjava
    I'm trying to find a working example of the twitter bootstrap typeahead element that will make an ajax call to populate it's dropdown. I have an existing working jquery autocomplete example which defines the ajax url to and how to process the reply <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ $(document).ready(function() { var options = { minChars:3, max:20 }; $("#runnerquery").autocomplete('./index/runnerfilter/format/html',options).result( function(event, data, formatted) { window.location = "./runner/index/id/"+data[1]; } ); .. What do i need change to convert this to the typeahead example? <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ $(document).ready(function() { var options = { source:'/index/runnerfilter/format/html', items:5 }; $("#runnerquery").typeahead(options).result( function(event, data, formatted) { window.location = "./runner/index/id/"+data[1]; } ); .. I'm going to wait for the 'Add remote sources support for typeahead' issue to be resolved.

  • Consuming JSON stream into AWS Database on the cheap

    - by wjl
    I'm working on a project that needs to consume a JSON stream (approximately 1MB / minute), and parse and insert objects into a database. Amazon's DynamoDB or SimpleDB seem like attractive options for this. Is there a web service that can run a very simple script to eat the data and put it in a database? I could use a worker on Heroku or Elastic Beanstalk, or even pure EC2, but I'd like to find a service that's much cheaper, due to the very low amount of bandwidth and CPU required. (Sorry for the crappy tags. I'm not even sure where to categorize this question.)

  • Duplicate content in Top Level Domain and country specific website

    - by Ando
    I have myproduct.com which is my master product page. For UK I also own myproduct.co.uk which is a copy of myproduct.com with some localized content: landing page, promotions, prices, and specific tags. But there is also duplicate content: myproduct.com/FAQs/ is the same as myproduct.co.uk/FAQs/ I don't want to do a redirect from myproduct.co.uk/FAQs/ to myproduct.com/FAQs/ as I don't want people to leave the localized website. The myproduct.com/FAQs/ is my "go-to" FAQ page and it's the most likely to be up to date - so I want this page to be indexed my search engines, where as I don't care about myproduct.co.uk/FAQs/ being indexed (unless indexing this page would increase my page rank :) ). What to do now to be SEO friendly & SEO optimal? Stop indexing of myproduct.co.uk/FAQs/ via robots.txt? Do some rel="alternate" hreflang="x" configuring on both /FAQs/ page? Something else?

  • Should I add old code into my repository?

    - by Ben Brocka
    I've got an SVN repository of a PHP site and the last programmer didn't use source control properly. As a result, only code since I started working here is in the Repo. I have a bunch of old copies of the full code base saved in files as "backups" but they're not in source control. I don't know why most of the copies were saved nor do I have any reasonable way to tag them to a version number. Due to upgrades to the frameworks and database drivers involved, the old code is quite defunct; it no longer works on the current server config. However, the previous programmers had some...unique...logic, so I hate to be completely without old copies to refer to what on earth they were doing. Should I keep this stuff in version control? How? Wall off the old code in separate Tags/branches?

  • Can SqlAnywhere's UltraLiteJ DB tables be viewed in the Database Explorer of the Eclipse IDE

    - by Tobias
    Hi, I am developing a Blackberry app which should be able to access a DB. Here is my development environment and the tools I am using: Eclipse (Galileo) IDE with the Blackberry plugin installed. Blackberry OS 5.0 SQLAnywhere's DB 11 with UltraLiteJ (I am targeting Blackberrys running OS 4.1 and above) I have successfully executed a sample project for building a Blackberry application that uses the UltraLiteJ DB, following the tutorial in the UltraLiteJ documentation*. The tutorial creates, populates and retrieves data from the DB using java code. Now, I want to be able to access the tables and view data in them from the Eclipse IDE. Something similar to the FireFox plugin for SqlLite or say the Enterprise Manager for Sql Server 2005 which is a DB Explorer providing access to the StoredProcedures, Views, DB Diagrams etc. for a Database. Can someone please direct me as to how to tackle this problem? I hope the question is descriptive and clear. Much Obliged. *http://dcx.sybase.com/index.html#1101en/ulj_en11/uj-ch03.html

  • jQuery Form Processing With PHP to MYSQL Database Using $.ajax Request

    - by FrustratedUser
    Question: How can I process a form using jQuery and the $.ajax request so that the data is passed to a script which writes it to a database? Problem: I have a simple email signup form that when processed, adds the email along with the current date to a table in a MySQL database. Processing the form without jQuery works as intended, adding the email and date. With jQuery, the form submits successfully and returns the success message. However, no data is added to the database. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! <!-- PROCESS.PHP --> <?php // DB info $dbhost = '#'; $dbuser = '#'; $dbpass = '#'; $dbname = '#'; // Open connection to db $conn = mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuser, $dbpass) or die ('Error connecting to mysql'); mysql_select_db($dbname); // Form variables $email = $_POST['email']; $submitted = $_POST['submitted']; // Clean up function cleanData($str) { $str = trim($str); $str = strip_tags($str); $str = strtolower($str); return $str; } $email = cleanData($email); $error = ""; if(isset($submitted)) { if($email == '') { $error .= '<p class="error">Please enter your email address.</p>' . • What is the best approach towards styling GWT applications?

    - by Ashwin
    General approach in GWT is to use Panels and then apply custom CSS themes to get a customized look. While I can achieve a certain extent of personalization of my GWT app through CSS tinkering, I was wondering how others generally approach styling. Some of the suggestions I came across the web were to manage layout with plain HTML, through use of HTMLPanel's. This way one can straightaway use the HTML mock-up within the application without having to code all the layout. So what in your opinion is the best and least painful way to approach layout and custom styling of GWT application?

    - by Steve Clements
    As Visual Studio 2010 IDE has been mostly written in WPF, extending the start page has become pretty darn easy and I for one find this quite interesting as I always open with the start page and the more customisation I can have the better! There are a few things you will need to install first to get going Visual Studio 2010 SDK Start page project template, which you can either get from the New Project dialog, in the online gallery section in VS or download from here   I was going to write a blog post on how to create a custom start page, but decided that msdn have done such a good job I was pretty much wasting my time, so take a look here, it has in detail everything you need to know to get it done! :) Technorati Tags: Visual Studio 2010,Custom Start Pages

  • GWB | Captchas For Everyone

    - by Geekswithblogs Administrator
    We have been getting hit very hard with comment spam as of late. As mentioned in the last post, this is something we typically deal with on a regular basis for the past 6 years, but some weeks are like this week where it is just crazy. Because of the way things are right now, I have disabled the ability to toggle on or off the CAPTCHA controls for comments. I know some bloggers are going to get mad, but we need to see if the lack of CAPTCHA on some blogs is the key cause of SPAM or if they are manually entering the data and filling in the CAPTCHA. I will report back on what we are seeing, but for a few weeks we are just going to require CAPTCHA controls on comments.This has been a public service announcement for Geekswithblogs.net :D Related Tags:

In practice, this is my understanding of how it works: INPUT user input via HTML form using Markdown syntax $queryInput = mysql_real_escape_string($userInput); insert sanitized string into database OUTPUT query field from database $output = Markdown($queryResult); display $output Is that it? Does PHP Markdown preclude the need for htmlspecialchars or Pure HTML ? Thanks!

  • Rails Google Maps integration Javascript problem

    I'm working on Rails 3.0.0.beta2, following Advanced Rails Recipes "Recipe #32, Mark locations on a Google Map" and I hit a road block: I do not see a google map. My @adds view uses @adds.to_json to connect the google maps api with my model. My database contains "latitude" "longitude", as floating points. And the entire project can be accessed at github.     I am creating my rows dynamically when the user clicks on "Ajouter". <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <script> function getXhr(){ var xhr = null; if(window.XMLHttpRequest) // Firefox and others xhr = new XMLHttpRequest(); else if(window.ActiveXObject){ // Internet Explorer try { xhr = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { xhr = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } } else { // XMLHttpRequest not supported by your browser alert("Votre navigateur ne supporte pas les objets XMLHTTPRequest..."); xhr = false; } return xhr } /** * method called when the user clicks on the button */ function go(){ var xhr = getXhr() // We defined what we gonna do with the response xhr.onreadystatechange = function(){ // We do somthing once the server's response is OK if(xhr.readyState == 4 && xhr.status == 200){ //alert(xhr.responseText); var body = document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0]; // Retrieve <table> ID and create a <tbody> element var tbl = document.getElementById("table"); var tblBody = document.createElement("tbody"); var row = document.createElement("tr"); // Create <td> elements and a text node, make the text // node the contents of the <td>, and put the <td> at // the end of the table row var cell_1 = document.createElement("td"); var cell_2 = document.createElement("td"); var cell_3 = document.createElement("td"); var cell_4 = document.createElement("td"); // Create the first cell which is a text zone var cell1=document.createElement("input"); cell1.type="text"; cell1.name="fname"; cell1.size="20"; cell1.maxlength="50"; cell_1.appendChild(cell1); // Create the second cell which is a text area var cell2=document.createElement("textarea"); cell2.name="fdescription"; cell2.rows="2"; cell2.cols="30"; cell_2.appendChild(cell2); var cell3 = document.createElement("div"); cell3.innerHTML=xhr.responseText; cell_3.appendChild(cell3); // Create the fourth cell which is a href var cell4 = document.createElement("a"); cell4.appendChild(document.createTextNode("[Delete]")); cell4.setAttribute("href","javascrit:deleteRow();"); cell_4.appendChild(cell4); // add cells to the row row.appendChild(cell_1); row.appendChild(cell_2); row.appendChild(cell_3); row.appendChild(cell_4); // add the row to the end of the table body tblBody.appendChild(row); // put the <tbody> in the <table> tbl.appendChild(tblBody); // appends <table> into <body> body.appendChild(tbl); // sets the border attribute of tbl to 2; tbl.setAttribute("border", "1"); } } xhr.open("GET","fstatus.php",true); xhr.send(null); } </head> <body > <h1> Create an Item </h1> <form method="post"> <table align="center" border = "2" cellspacing ="0" cellpadding="3" id="table"> <tr><td><b>Functionality Name:</b></td> <td><b>Description:</b></td> <td><b>Status:</b></td> <td><input type="button" Name= "Ajouter" Value="Ajouter" onclick="go()"></td></tr> </table> </form> </body> </html> Now, I would like to use the href [Delete] to delete one particular row. I wrote this: <script type="text/javascript"> function deleteRow(r){ var i=r.parentNode.parentNode.rowIndex; document.getElementById('table').deleteRow(i); } </script> When I change the first code like this: cell4.setAttribute("href","javascrit:deleteRow(this);"); I got an error: The page cannot be displayed. I am redirected to a new pagewhich can not be displayed. How could I delete my row by using the function deleteRow(r)? table is the id of my table Thanks. Billy85
