  How can I make a bootable backup of my Mac's internal hard drive to be restored using Disk Utility, without formatting my external destination drive as HFS+ (it's FAT32, of course)? Time Machine and SuperDuper both require that the volume where the backup is saved be HFS+ formatted. I just got an offer from a dedicated hosting company, offering me a box with "2 Core 2 Quad processors @ 6GHz" I didn't know we could get 6GHz, and some googling turned out a bunch of people getting that, after overclocking like crazy, which seems to confirm my suspicion. • Why do firewire drives on Mac OS cause processes to go into uninterruptible wait?

  I have a Western Digital My Passport Studio external hard drive. It works with either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. I've noticed that when I have it connected to Firewire, after a few hours, processes on my Mac start to go into an uninterruptible wait state. Eventually the system becomes so hard locked that I can't even shut it down. I have Spotlight indexing of the drive disabled, and the mds process seems to be the one that triggers this eventual system collapse.
