  • Durable laptop power adapter?

    I'm on my third power adapter for my HP Pavilion dv4-1435dx in less than one year. I'm not abusing them. I used Mac laptops for 10 years (before needing to switch to a PC) without a problem. I tried a Targus universal power adapter, but it wouldn't charge my PC, it worked fine on another laptop http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.aspx?sku=APA6911US Any suggestion for a more durable and reliable power adapter?

  • Sun Power Button Won't Shut Down System

    Background: We are running NIS and have NFS mounts from a Solaris 10 workstation to a Solaris 8 server. If the workstation loses its network connection for some reason, when I look at the workstation's console I see repeated messages of the form: <date> <time> <hostname> ypbind[<pid>]: NIS server not responding for domain "<domain>"; still trying. If I try to login at the console as a user, it won't work because it can't authenticate my account through NIS. Also, it won't return to a login prompt again, so I can't log in as root. If I press the power button (don't hold it in) on the workstation, I see: <date> <time> <hostname> power: WARNING: Power off requested from power button or SC, powering down the system! Shutdown started. <date> <time> Changing to init state 5 - please wait. <date> <time+2 minutes> <hostname> power: WARNING: Failed to shut down the system! And continue to see messages of the form: <date> <time> <hostname> ypbind[<pid>]: NIS server not responding for domain "<domain>"; still trying. So, the questions are How do I make NIS stop trying (because I know it will fail)? Why won't it shut down?

  • Close lid option "Do nothing" absent

    I just unpacked my new Sony Vaio, with windows 8 pro installed. Everything is nice, so I tried setting my power management options. The "When I close the lid" option only list: Hibernate Sleep Shutdown The "Do nothing" option is not present. I've seen loads of stuff on google where people ask or explain how to set this option to "Do nothing", but in all my power plans this option is absent... Can I use a tool to prevent this, or is there a way to force windows to show me this option (and that it actually works)?   • Command line solution for removing parts from a binary file?

    I have a binary file and I would like to remove parts from. By removing I mean deleting those parts and thus making the file's size smaller. The parts would be between two ASCII strings. So, for example the file would look like this ........ start ABCD end ..... start EFGH end ..... start IJKL end ........... So in this file, I would like to search for strings "start" and "end" and remove the parts between them. The way I think I can do it is to lookup all the locations for "start" and "end" calculate ranges from that delete those parts Now I am using some GUI based Hex editor and I use the "Search All", "Select Range" and "Delete" commands, but I am sure it would be possible to solve it using some powerful command line hex/text editors. Do you know any solution for this problem which doesn't require using a GUI for looking up, copy & paste on clipboard, select range and delete commands but is just a few lines of command line? I am interested ini both Linux shell scripts or using some command line hex editors under Windows, or even Python scrips are welcome. Do you think it is possible to solve this problem just by a simple Regex replace? Are there any regex replace util which handles binary files well?

  • Strange Flash AS3 xml Socket behavior

    I have a problem which I can't understand. To understand it I wrote a socket client on AS3 and a server on python/twisted, you can see the code of both applications below. Let's launch two clients at the same time, arrange them so that you can see both windows and press connection button in both windows. Then press and hold any button. What I'm expecting: Client with pressed button sends a message "some data" to the server, then the server sends this message to all the clients(including the original sender) . Then each client moves right the button 'connectButton' and prints a message to the log with time in the following format: "min:secs:milliseconds". What is going wrong: The motion is smooth in the client that sends the message, but in all other clients the motion is jerky. This happens because messages to those clients arrive later than to the original sending client. And if we have three clients (let's name them A,B,C) and we send a message from A, the sending time log of B and C will be the same. Why other clients recieve this messages later than the original sender? By the way, on ubuntu 10.04/chrome all the motion is smooth.   • Can I split one ethernet line coming out of my wall into multiple separate lines?

    Hi all and thanks in advance. I'll start with some background. I live in an apartment which provides internet service included in the rent. They use company called pavlov for the internet http://pavlovmedia.net/ wireless seems to be working fine but wired connection is at least %30 faster. Ethernet, cat5 outlet is built in the wall, and there is only 1 outlet in each room. I would like to take this 1 outlet coming out the wall and multiply it into 4 wires, for desktop, playstation, tv and laptop without loosing any internet bandwidth. i have absolutely no idea weather this line is coming from a switch or a router but i have been researching Ethernet splitter, routers, switches, hubs and haven't found a solid answer. what is the best solution for me? thank you once again! EDIT: ok this picture cleared few things http://www.home-network-help.com/images/home-network-expanded.jpg so seems that an ethernet switch is to ethernet as a USB hub is to USB. what is really 10/100Mbps Network Switch and what is the cap?

    Ringhals nuclear power plant, which is part of the Vattenfall Group, is located about 60 km south-west of the beautiful coastal city of Gothenburg in Sweden. A deep concern to reduce environmental impact coupled with an effort to increase plant safety and operational efficiency have led to a recent surge in investments and initiatives around plant modification and plant optimization at Ringhals.   • Why can't I decrease the line-height of this text?

    http://jsfiddle.net/mJxn4/ This is very odd: I have a few lines of text wrapped in an <em> tag. No matter what I do, lowering the value for line-height below 17px has no effect. I can bump the line-height up to greater than 17px and it'll apply, but I can't get it lower than 17px. The CSS in question is: #others .item em { font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px; } Try adjusting the line height both higher and lower and run the updated fiddle after each change, and you'll see what I mean. Why would this be? No line-height is specified anywhere else in the CSS, so nothing is overriding it. That couldn't be the case anyway because I'm adjusting the line-height up and down within the same selector, so it doesn't make sense that a higher value would apply, but a lower value would get overridden.

  • Old HP computer powers off after seconds, hard drive still spins. Power supply? Motherboard?

    Someone called me saying their computer keeps shutting off. I brought it home to troubleshoot. It's an HP Pavilion 513c. The computer powers on normally but almost immediately powers off. Sometimes it manages to make it to a fully loaded desktop and other times it powers off during the boot process. The hard drive still spins but there is no video and the CPU fans quit spinning. The power has to be unplugged before you can turn it back on again. I'm thinking it's either a motherboard or power supply issue. I don't have a spare of either component laying around to test with. Any guess on which part is more likely to be the culprit? Thanks.

    In our home, there is a mechanic who often use a welding plant. When he use it, I think we get a power surge. My UPS ticks madly (not beep, it ticks). Sometimes, I even lose power to the keyboard. When typing, some keys get missing. 1) My question is, is it good for the computer? The UPS claimed to have surge protection. But isn't it working? What should I do to protect my PC? 2) The second question is, I also have a broadband router which is not connected to the UPS. Will it be effected?

  • Software center is not working after attempt to install skype

    I am completely new person on Linux. I installed it just today and i have to say I like them a lot, until I faced the problem. I was looking on the internet but nothing worked for me. After i downloaded skype and tried to run it, software center showed up and was loading something for 5 mins. then it just dessapeared. Now everytime I try to turn it on, the window is gone after 3 sec. I tried to kill it but didnt really wokrked.     Is it possible to open the Quota Entries list for a given drive from a shortcut or the command line in Windows? And if so, how? I'm not talking about managing quota entries from the command line (fsutil quota), I'm looking for a way to get directly to the Quota Entries GUI rather than going through My Computer → right-click on a drive → Properties → Quota tab → Show Quota Settings → Quota Entries... I managed to find out (using Process Explorer) that the backend process is dllhost.exe, and the DLL in question should be dskquoui.dll, so it should be possible to run it directly with rundll32.exe, but I'm not sure of the exact syntax. Any ideas?

  • SQL like group by and sum for text files in command line?

    I have huge text files with two fields, the first is a string the second is an integer. The files are sorted by the first field. What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. E.g. Given the sample data below, for the string glehnia I'd like to get 10+22=32 in the result. Any suggestions how to do this either with gnuwin32 command line tools or in linux shell?
