• KVM Bridged Network Not Working

  I just installed KVM on my Ubuntu Server according to this guide : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Installation Then prepared a bridged network as shown in here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Then, I created a virtual machine with virt-manager. I tried several times but the guest fails to connect to the network! • Can't install Ubuntu on a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought a HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop. I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu. But when I inserted the live CD, it showed the Ubuntu start screen and then everything went black. There was no cursor, everything just stayed black like the screen was switched off (but the system is running). When I tried to install from the USB, it said Live media is not found. Sometimes it also gave me a black screen like the CD. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

• Chrome UI styles are not working under Ubuntu! GTK Theme is not working!

  Chrome Version : 31.0.1650.63 (Official Build 238485) Extensions : Google docs, Lastpass Im on a brand new system, just installed Ubuntu. When I open chrome, normally the search box, alert windows are styled according to my current system GTK theme. But now they look like classic windows theme! Tried different themes and adjusting the theme under Settings Appearance in Chrome but still no use. How to fix this? Here's a screenshot :

• Can't install ATI proprietary drivers in 12.10. Unity is Missing

  I have a laptop with ATI Radeon 6770M HD Hybrid graphics card. In Ubuntu 12.04, I installed the fglrx driver through "additional drivers" and it worked. (I can even switch GPUs). But in the new Ubuntu 12.10, after installing, Unity won't load. Only the mouse and the wallpaper. If I initialize the settings sudo aticonfig --initial then after rebooting it gives a warning saying I'm in low graphics mode! How to fix this? PS : Earlier i used software source to install the drivers. But when using the terminal, I got this warning : update-alternatives: warning: forcing reinstallation of alternative /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf because link group x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is broken Update : Filed a bug report in launchpad : https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1068661

• There's a stray current flowing from my monitor through the VGA cable to the PC. Is this safe?

  I have two monitors in my machine. One is an old LCS samsung monitor. Recently, I started to hear a small hum in my speakers (subwoofer) and replaced them. The new one also got the issues then I found our that its a grounding issue. I unplugged the PC's power chord. The monitor is still switched on. When I checked, there's current in the earth pin (ground pin). When I unplug the monitor, there's no current and the speaker is normal. Now, I have moved that monitor to my dad's machine and took his monitor. My question is, is it a big issues? The house's earthing system is working and its grounding the current. I won't feel it if I touch the machine like in many other cases. But still, is it good to keep that monitor attached to my machine? Can it harm the computer? What should I do?

• Fail2Ban adds iptable rules but they are not working?

  Fail2Ban just blocked my IP for 3 SSH attempts. It added the iptables rule and I can see it using the "sudo iptables -L -n" command. But I can still access the site and login through SSH! What might be the problem? Is it because im using CloudFlare? I have set Nginx to write the real IPs to the access logs instead of the Cloud Flare IP. Isn't it enough?   I just tested an Nvidia 9300 GS card with a Intel Corei3 HD 2000 graphics system. Here is the windows experience index scores I got : Nvidia 9300 GS : Base Score 3.9 Processor : 7.1 Memory : 7.5 Graphics : 3.9 Gaming Graphics : 5.1 Hard Disk : 5.9 Intel HD 2000 : Base Score : 5.2 Processor : 7.1 Memory : 5.9 Graphics : 5.2 Gaming Graphics : 5.8 Hard Disk : 5.9 My questions are : When using Intel HD graphics, it reduces the score of my Ram! How is that possible? It checks the speed of the ram. Not the size (i think). Intel graphics take some of the ram space but how can that effect the speed? From both of them, what will be the good choice?

  In our home, there is a mechanic who often use a welding plant. When he use it, I think we get a power surge. My UPS ticks madly (not beep, it ticks). Sometimes, I even lose power to the keyboard. When typing, some keys get missing. 1) My question is, is it good for the computer? The UPS claimed to have surge protection. But isn't it working? • After installing Windows what should I do first? update or install antivirus?

  Normally, after reformating and installing Windows 7, I used to go online and install all the updates, install all the driver updates and then install the anti virus. Because long ago, when I installed the anti virus first, applying windows updates crashed the AV! So, I install it last. Specially 7 sp1 is critical right? But now im having doubts... Going online without an antivirus means I'm vulnerable! (I have a home router which have a small firewall but I'm not sure about it) So, whats the best thing to do? Install the anti virus first or install the updates first?

• Big noise from Power Supply Unity Fa? Should I replace it immediately?

  Recently, I started to get a large noise from my PC when switched on. After some time, it disappears. I discovered that the issue is with the Power Supply Unit. Does this mean I have a failing PSU? Will it harm the PC if I didn't replace it immediately? Several years ago I bought a new computer casing which is very weird. Its small and compact. Normally, we have the PSU in the top. But in here, the PSU is on the bottom and right below the hard drive. Recently, two of my hard drives started to show problems. Read errors and bad sectors. • Using a degrading corrupted hard disk with a brand new one. Is this ok?

  My old 500 GB hard drive started to give bad sectors. Its slowly going down. So, I bought a new 1TB Seagate drive. I first attached the 500GB drive as the first primary drive and installed Windows. I want Windows boot loader to be placed in the old drive so it won't conflict with the Linux system. But the actual Windows system (Including the C drive) is placed on my new hard drive. After this, I attached the new drive as the primary and installed Linux. Now if I want to re install windows, I can do it without any issues by simply setting the old drive as the primary. So the Linux system will be untouched. But is it a good idea to set things like this? Will the old degrading drive have an impact on the new one? The old drive is slower than the new one. Won't I be able to get the maximum speed out of the new drive even when its used to install everything (including the OS)? PS : When I ran the Windows Experience Index, I was using the old drive as the primary. Did it got the hard drive ratings from the old drive? What if I run it now with the new drive as the primary?

• Windows 8 Hidden Downloading? Slow Internet?

  After upgrading to Windows 8, im facing a very slow download speed. My router and the NIC is working fine because on the same PC I also have Linux. In Linux, everything works fine. When checking through the task manager, it shows that the system use the full bandwidth 1Mbps even without a download. The process menu doesn't show whats taking much bandwidth. The bitdefender's firewall also shows network activity. Is there any hidden apps downloading? How to fix this?
