• Upgraded from fc10 to fc12 now I have eth0_rename, how do I get back to plain old eth0?

  I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 12. Unfortunately, my ethernet interface eth0 is now named eth0_rename. I'd like to get back to having it named plain old eth0. I googled a bit but the solution of removing the eth0 entry from /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules seems to have no effect (I restarted the network service but didn't reboot). The interface works just fine although I could see a script or two having a problem with the format. So, it's more of an inconvenience thing than anything else. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Forum software alternative to phpBB3

  I've been using phpBB3 for quite some time now. It seems to me this forum software hasn't evolved at all in all these years. Installing mods is a hassle, updating it to a newer version a real pain in the arse and moderating is not intuitive at all. Besides, I find there's just no way to stop spam on it. Lots of web software have made a great job controlling spam, but phpBB3 still doesn't, at least not without too much complex and tedious work. Since my last attempt to update to the latest version broke it, I'm finally fed up with it, and decide I'm not wasting a minute more in mantaining such a beast. I'm looking for a free software (free as in free beer and free as in free speech) alternative. So SMF is not an alternative at the moment. The most important feature I'm looking for is there must be a script to migrate all of the current phpBB users and posts into the new system. Out of all the alternatives out there, does any of them support these features? Which one do you recommend?

• Getting ROBOCOPY to return a "proper" exit code?

  Is it possible to ask ROBOCOPY to exit with an exit code that indicates success or failure? I am using ROBOCOPY as part of my TeamCity build configurations, and having to add a step to just silence the exit code from ROBOCOPY seems silly to me. Basically, I have added this: EXIT /B 0 to the script that is being run. However, this of course masks any real problems that ROBOCOPY would return. Basically, I would like to have exit codes of 0 for SUCCESS and non-zero for FAILURE instead of the bit-mask that ROBOCOPY returns now. Or, if I can't have that, is there a simple sequence of batch commands that would translate the bit-mask of ROBOCOPY to a similar value?

• Unable to Connect to Internet with 3G USB Dongle for Particular ISP

  I'm using USB 3G Dongle for Internet. Previously I was using Tata Docomo (India) as provider, and the Internet was working fine. Now I've changed to BSNL, but I'm unable to connect to the Internet on Ubuntu. However, I've checked access point settings and other configuration which are required for BSNL, and it is working fine with same Dongle on Windows 7. Also, I'm able to connect Internet with other providers on Ubuntu, but problem persists only with Ubuntu. The access point for BSNL in my region is bsnlnet. In fact I configure the Dongle with BSNL using default Network Configuration wizard that pops up when USB Dongle is attached. When Dongle is attached and configured with BSNL, I can see network strength in Messaging menu, in Mobile Broadband category, of Ubuntu (note: my network icon still shows "not connected" status). And when I try to use the connection that I've created, it fails to connect. So far, I tried using Sakis3g script that I came up with while wandering over this issue on other forums, it didn't worked either. I also made sure that there are no special configuration made for BSNL on my Windows 7 installation, and still it is working fine there, the problem is only with Ubuntu. How can I fix it?

• How can I set a Windows user environment variable that takes effect for the current session?

  I am trying to set a Windows user environment variable and then launch an application via either batch file or a script. However, the environment variable is not set to the appropriate value until after the user logs off and logs back on. (I think a more accurate description would be that the new value is not available to the app until after the next logon.) Is there any way to set a variable in the user's environment so that it's immediately available? I'm doing this because this program's functionality can be controlled by environment variables, and users will need different functionality at different times. Because of license constraints I need to set this dynamically, if possible. Thanks, Graham

• What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). This is the list I compiled with below help and by digging in setup.py. It is complete for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 at least: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev More optional: tk-dev libdb-dev Ubuntu has no packages for v1.8.5 of the Berkeley database, nor (for obvious reasons) the Sun audio hardware, so the bsddb185 and sunaudiodev modules will still not be built on Ubuntu, but all other modules are built with the above packages installed. Python 2.5 and Python 2.6 also needs to have LDFLAGS set on Ubuntu 11.04 and later, to handle the new multi-arch layout: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/$(dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)" For Python 2.6 and 2.7 you also need to explicitly enable SSL after running the ./configure script and before running make.   I just took over the IT for a medium sized business with a three domain controllers (2003/2008 Standard) and whenever I create a new user, after some time the user account cannot log into most machines on the network. I have traced this back to the "Log On To..." area becoming populated with a small list of machines. Even when I set the option to all computers, this list comes back after some time. I started hunting for vbs and ps1 scripts with the word "workstations" in them on all domain controllers to see if there is some kind of script to blame, but I have thus far come up empty handed. Is there a known software suite that can cause this (Microsoft Forefront, etc)? How can I figure out what is causing this list to change?

  We have a really old Video learning program that we need to run from the network for our students. However it uses Director Player 6.0 and the students get the error: "Unable to copy the driver file C:\Windows\xobglu16.dll to your Windows directory. Your disk may be full" Now the solution I've read is to copy the files manually to each machine and mark them read-only. I'm trying to do this via GPP, but the Event log is showing an Access is denied error. I believe it is because the student accounts do not have permission to c:\windows. Any ideas on a work around without using a script?

  During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012.   I have a PHP script that is for personal use that goes through a folder and lists all the pictures in the folder. The pictures are pages from a book, so it is important that they be in order. They are named so that in alphabetical order, they are also in the correct page order. I had it running on my Mac OS server, and it worked fine, listing them in order because Mac OS apparently keeps files alphabetically. Now, since I've switched to Ubuntu, it is listing them in a seemingly random order. Is there any way to order files in Ubuntu server so that they are in alphabetical order?

  Motivation I have to manage a lot of virtual machines that I create by copying a template (VmWare image). Problem Now I have the problem that in the template the file /etc/hostname contains a given name that I want to change for each copy of the template. Facts The network interface is configured by DHCP. DNS entries exist. The system is a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Question I wonder if I can configure the template so that on startup it sets its hostname according to its DNS name. I could create an init script that parses the IP address, makes a DNS lookup and sets the hostname accordingly. But is there an easier way?

• Smart defaults [SSDT]

  I’ve just discovered a new, somewhat hidden, feature in SSDT that I didn’t know about and figured it would be worth highlighting here because I’ll bet not many others know it either; the feature is called Smart Defaults. It gets around the problem of adding a NOT NULLable column to an existing table that has got data in it – previous to SSDT you would need to define a DEFAULT constraint however it does feel rather cumbersome to create an object purely for the purpose of pushing through a deployment – that’s the situation that Smart Defaults is meant to alleviate. The Smart Defaults option exists in the advanced section of a Publish Profile file: The description of the setting is “Automatically provides a default value when updating a table that contains data with a column that does not allow null values”, in other words checking that option will cause SSDT to insert an arbitrary default value into your newly created NON NULLable column. In case you’re wondering how it does it, here’s how: SSDT creates a DEFAULT CONSTRAINT at the same time as the column is created and then immediately removes that constraint: ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1]    ADD [C1] INT NOT NULL,         CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b] DEFAULT 0 FOR [C1];ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1] DROP CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b]; You can then update the value as appropriate in a Post-Deployment script. Pretty cool! On the downside, you can only specify this option for the whole project, not for an individual table or even an individual column – I’m not sure that I’d want to turn this on for an entire project as it could hide problems that a failed deployment would highlight, in other words smart defaults could be seen to be “papering over the cracks”. If you think that should be improved go and vote (and leave a comment) at [SSDT] Allow us to specify Smart defaults per table or even per column. @Jamiet

I've been working on this for hours and can't figure out how to get pg_connect to work. Any ideas???

• Can Resource Governor for SQL Server 2008 be scripted?

  I'm looking for a method to, in real-time, automatically, adjust Resource Governor settings. Here's an example: Imagine that I have 10 applications, each hitting a different database on the same database machine. For normal operations, they do not hit the database very hard, so I might want each one to have 10% CPU power reserved. Occasionally, though, one or two of them might spike, and run an operation which could really use the extra power to run faster. I'd like to be able to adjust to compensate (say, reducing the non-spiking apps to 3%, and splitting the difference between the spiking apps). This is a kind of poor man's method of trying to dynamically adjust resource allocation and priorities. Scripts (or something script-like) is preferred, since the requirement is for meta-level adjustments to be possible in real-time, also.

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. (never used it anyway) GPO link GPO Security Filterings

• Python installation in OSX not updating

  I've recently got into Python programming and so downloaded the latest version (3.2.3) to install on my Mac running Snow Leopard. I used the installer package. I have run the shell profile update script, but Terminal is still using 2.6.1 to run my programs. I have tried changing the paths with sudo nano as per this post but it makes no difference - it still uses 2.6.1 Any ideas, oh mighty Super Users? I am a complete noob when it comes to Terminal commands.

• Android device unable to obtain ip address connecting to AP created with Hostapd

  I have a wired internet connection that works behind an authenticated proxy server. I followed the steps mentioned here and managed to create a hotspot which my google nexus 7 detects. However, it seems stuck at "obtaining an ip address" and is not able to connect to the internet. I initially received the following error message when running the script in the terminal: dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 127.0.0.1: Address already in use [fail] I figured it is because of a conflict with the network manager, I commented out the "dns=dnsmasq" line in the nm configuration file. After a network-manager restart, the first error doesn't show up but I get the following: Configuration file: /etc/hostapd.conf Failed to create interface mon.wlan0: -23 (Too many open files in system) Try to remove and re-create mon.wlan0 In both cases, however, the hotspot is created and is detected by my android device. only that it cannot "obtain an ip address" and connect to it. Is it because my eth0 connects via a proxy server? Or could there be something wrong with the dnsmasq config? Any help would be appreciated.

  I have a bunch of gzip files that I have to convert to bzip2 every now and then. Currently, I'm using a shell script that simply 'gunzip's each file and then 'bzip2's it. Though this works, it takes a lot of time to complete. Is it possible to make this process more efficient? I'm ready to take a dive and look into gunzip and bzip2's source codes if necessary, but I just want to be sure of the payoff. Is there any hope of improving the efficiency of the process?

• Apache whitelist a single location, but require basic auth for everything else

  I'm sure this is simple, but Google is not my friend this morning. The goal is: /public... is openly accessible everything else (including /) requires basic auth. This is a WSGI app, with a single WSGI script (it's a django site, if that matters..) I have this: <Location /public> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Location> <Directory /> AuthType Basic AuthName "My Test Server" AuthUserFile /path/to/.htpasswd Require valid-user </Directory> With this configuration, basic auth works fine, but the Location directive is totally ignored. I'm not surprised, as according to this (see How the Sections are Merged), the Directory directive is processed first. I'm sure I'm missing something, but since Directory applies to a filesystem location, and I really only have the one Directory at /, and it's a Location that I wish to allow access to, but Directory always overrides Location... EDIT I'm using Apache 2.2, which doesn't support AuthType None.
