  • Indexed key vs indexed separate columns, which one is faster ?

    - by Jerry
In MYSQL, from a pure performance perspective, if I have a table with large amount of data with 10/1 read/write ratio. is it faster in read/write performance to have 4 search criteria in separate columns and all indexed or have them combined in to one single string acting as a key and store in one indexed column ? e.g. say this table with 5 columns, first name, last name, sex, country and file where the first four columns will ALWAYS be given as a part of search parameters in a search or have a table with two columns, key and file. where the value of key can be john-smith-male-australia ?? I don't quite get the pros and cons. the point I try to stress is the fact that all parameters will be given.in a search.

  • Best indexing strategy for several varchar columns in Postgres

    - by Corey
I have a table with 10 columns that need to be searchable (the table itself has about 20 columns). So the user will enter query criteria for at least one of the columns but possibly all ten. All non-empty criteria is then put into an AND condition Suppose the user provided non-empty criteria for column1 and column4 and column8 the query would be: select * from the_table where column1 like '%column1_query%' and column4 like '%column4_query%' and column8 like '%column8_query%' So my question is: am I better off creating 1 index with 10 columns? 10 indexes with 1 column each? Or do I need to find out what sets of columns are queried together frequently and create indexes for them (an index on cols 1,4 and 8 in the case above). If my understanding is correct a single index of 10 columns would only work effectively if all 10 columns are in the condition. Open to any suggestions here, additionally the rowcount of the table is only expected to be around 20-30K rows but I want to make sure any and all searches on the table are fast. Thanks!

  • Relational databases are not suited for my application - what's the alternative?

    - by waitinforatrain
Hi, I'm writing a CMS in PHP that allows the user to define different fields (e.g. a Blog page could have fields for Title (string), Content (rich text), Picture (file)). I need the user to be able to add and remove fields dynamically, and the only way I can think of to do it with relational DBs is to serialise all these values and store them in one cell. This seems like a slow approach and like I'm trying to fit something dynamic within a static structure. Could someone recommend anything that is PHP-compatible that would make this easier?

  • What would be the best schema to store the 'address' for different entities?

    - by Cesar
Suppose we're making a system where we have to store the addrees for buildings, persons, cars, etc. The address 'format' should be something like: State (From a State list) County (From a County List) Street (free text, like '5th Avenue') Number (free text, like 'Chrysler Building, Floor 10, Office No. 10') (Yes I don't live in U.S.A) What would be the best way to store that info: Should I have a Person_Address, Car_Address, ... Or the address info should be in columns on each entity, Could we have just one address table and try to link each row to a different entity? Or are there another 'better' way to handle this type of scenario? How would yo do it?

  • Ways to implement tags - pros and cons of each

    - by bobobobo
    Related Using SO as an example, what is the most sensible way to manage tags if you anticipate they will change often? Way 1: Seriously denormalized (comma delimited) table posts +--------+-----------------+ | postId | tags | +--------+-----------------+ | 1 | c++,search,code | Here tags are comma delimited. Pros: Tags are retrieved at once with a single select query. Updating tags is simple. Easy and cheap to update. Cons: Extra parsing on tag retrieval, difficult to count how many posts use which tags. (alternatively, if limited to something like 5 tags) table posts +--------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+ | postId | tag_1 | tag_2 | tag_3 | tag_4 | tag_5 | +--------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+ | 1 | c++ |search | code | | | Way 2: "Slightly normalized" (separate table, no intersection) table posts +--------+-------------------+ | postId | title | +--------+-------------------+ | 1 | How do u tag? | table taggings +--------+---------+ | postId | tagName | +--------+---------+ | 1 | C++ | | 1 | search | Pros: Easy to see tag counts (count(*) from taggings where tagName='C++'). Cons: tagName will likely be repeated many, many times. Way 3: The cool kid's (normalized with intersection table) table posts +--------+---------------------------------------+ | postId | title | +--------+---------------------------------------+ | 1 | Why is a raven like a writing desk? | table tags +--------+---------+ | tagId | tagName | +--------+---------+ | 1 | C++ | | 2 | search | | 3 | foofle | table taggings +--------+---------+ | postId | tagId | +--------+---------+ | 1 | 1 | | 1 | 2 | | 1 | 3 | Pros: No repeating tag names. More girls will like you. Cons: More expensive to change tags than way #1.

  • Alter multiple tables' columns length

    - by gdoron
So, we just found out that 254 tables in our Oracle DBMS have one column named "Foo" with the wrong length- Number(10) instead of Number(3). That foo column is a part from the PK of the tables. Those tables have other tables with forigen keys to it. What I did is: backed-up the table with a temp table. Disabled the forigen keys to the table. Disabled the PK with the foo column. Nulled the foo column for all the rows. Restored all the above But now we found out it's not just couple of tables but 254 tables. Is there an easy way, (or at least easier than this) to alter the columns length? P.S. I have DBA permissions.

  • HQL 'parsename' equivalent

    - by jaume
I've discovered PARSENAME function as a good choice to order IP address stored in Database. Here there is an example. My issue is I'm using Hibernate with named queries in a xml mapping file and I am trying to avoid the use of session.createSQLQuery(..) function. I'm wondering if exists any PARSENAME equivalent function for HQL queries. I'm searching for it and cannot find anything. Many thanks.

  • PgJDBC: "no suitable driver found" when following tutorial, why?

    - by Celeritas
I'm writing a Java program that queries a PostgreSQL database. I'm following this example and have trouble here: connection = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:postgresql://127.0.0.1:5432/testdb", "mkyong", "123456"); According to the JavaDoc for DriverManager the first string is "a database url of the form jdbc:subprotocol:subname. When I connect to the server I type in psql -h dataserv.abc.company.com -d app -U emp24 and give the password qwe123 (for example sake). What should the first argument of getConnection be? I've tried connection = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:postgresql://dataserv.abc.company.com", "emp24", "qwe123"); and get the run time error: no suitable driver found. I've download JDBC4 Postgresql Driver, Version 9.2-1000.

  • Tricky SQL query - need to get time frames

    - by Andrew
    I am stumbled upon a problem, when I need a query which will produce a list of speeding time frames. Here is the data example [idgps_unit_location] [dt] [idgps_unit] [lat] [long] [speed_kmh] 26 10/18/2012 18:53 2 47 56 30 27 10/18/2012 18:53 2 49 58 31 28 10/18/2012 18:53 2 28 37 15 29 10/18/2012 18:54 2 56 65 33 30 10/18/2012 18:54 2 152 161 73 31 10/18/2012 18:55 2 134 143 64 32 10/18/2012 18:56 2 22 31 12 36 10/18/2012 18:59 2 98 107 47 37 10/18/2012 18:59 2 122 131 58 38 10/18/2012 18:59 2 91 100 44 39 10/18/2012 19:00 2 190 199 98 40 10/18/2012 19:01 2 194 203 101 41 10/18/2012 19:02 2 182 191 91 42 10/18/2012 19:03 2 162 171 78 43 10/18/2012 19:03 2 174 183 83 44 10/18/2012 19:04 2 170 179 81 45 10/18/2012 19:05 2 189 198 97 46 10/18/2012 19:06 2 20 29 10 47 10/18/2012 19:07 2 158 167 76 48 10/18/2012 19:08 2 135 144 64 49 10/18/2012 19:08 2 166 175 79 50 10/18/2012 19:09 2 9 18 5 51 10/18/2012 19:09 2 101 110 48 52 10/18/2012 19:09 2 10 19 7 53 10/18/2012 19:10 2 32 41 20 54 10/18/2012 19:10 1 54 63 85 55 10/19/2012 19:11 2 55 64 50 I need a query that would convert this table into the following report that shows frames of time when speed was 80: [idgps_unit] [dt_start] [lat_start] [long_start] [speed_start] [dt_end] [lat_end] [long_end] [speed_end] [speed_average] 2 10/18/2012 19:00 190 199 98 10/18/2012 19:02 182 191 91 96.66666667 2 10/18/2012 19:03 174 183 83 10/18/2012 19:05 189 198 97 87 1 10/18/2012 19:10 54 63 85 10/18/2012 19:10 54 63 85 85 Now, what have I tried? • Updating database row from model

    - by Jamie Dixon
    Hey everyone, I'm haing a few problems updating a row in my database using Linq2Sql. Inside of my model I have two methods for updating and saving from my controller, which in turn receives an updated model from my view. My model methods like like: public void Update(Activity activity) { _db.Activities.InsertOnSubmit(activity); } public void Save() { _db.SubmitChanges(); } and the code in my Controller likes like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(Activity activity) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { UpdateModel<Activity>(activity); _activitiesModel.Update(activity); _activitiesModel.Save(); } return View(activity); } The problem I'm having is that this code inserts a new entry into the database, even though the model item i'm inserting-on-submit contains a primary key field. I've also tried re-attaching the model object back to the data source but this throws an error because the item already exists. Any pointers in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: I'm using dependancy injection to instantiate my datacontext object as follows: IMyDataContext _db; public ActivitiesModel(IMyDataContext db) { _db = db; }

  • Should I use DATE and TIME as fields rather than DATETIME

    - by whitstone86
I have a project on going for a TV guide, called mytvguide in the database - I use PHPMyAdmin. This is the structure for one table, which is called tvshow1: Field Type channel varchar(255) date date No airdate time No expiration time No episode varchar(255) setreminder varchar(255) but am not sure how to get DATE, TIME to work with the pagination script (below is the script, which works for the version with DATETIME): http://pastebin.com/6S1ejAFJ However, although the DATETIME one works - it shows programmes that air on the day itself like this: Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 2:35pm "Episode 2" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 12:50pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 5:55pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder but I'm not quite sure how to replicate that for the fields that use DATE, TIME functions as seen above. Any advice on this is appreciated, thanks!

  • Java curious Loop Performance

    - by user1680583
I have a big problem while evaluate my java code. To simplify the problem I wrote the following code which produce the same curious behavior. Important is the method run() and given double value rate. For my runtime test (in the main method) I set the rate to 0.5 one times and 1.0 the other time. With the value 1.0 the if-statement will be executed in each loop iteration and with the value 0.5 the if-statement will be executed half as much. For this reason I expected longer runtime by the first case but opposite is true. Can anybody explain me this phenomenon?? The result of main: Test mit rate = 0.5 Length: 50000000, IF executions: 25000856 Execution time was 4329 ms. Length: 50000000, IF executions: 24999141 Execution time was 4307 ms. Length: 50000000, IF executions: 25004766 Execution time was 4346 ms. ================================= Test mit rate = 1.0 Length: 50000000, IF executions: 50000000 Execution time was 3482 ms. Length: 50000000, IF executions: 50000000 Execution time was 3572 ms. Length: 50000000, IF executions: 50000000 Execution time was 3529 ms. • Basic Hibernate question using and sql query

I have an Oracle Store procedure returning a Resultset with the 3 column. All works fine for that. Now I have another StoreProcedure that will only return firstname and lastname but not username. I get the following error : « could not read column value from result set username. » Hibernate tries to fetch the username property from the resultset. If I remove the property username, then it works. Do I have to Create a Special Pojo for Each type of resultset or can I tell Hibernate what to map for each result set? Please help.

My table looks like this: `MyDB`.`Details` ( `id` bigint(20) NOT NULL, `run_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `element_name` varchar(255) NOT NULL, `value` text, `line_order` int(11) default NULL, `column_order` int(11) default NULL ); I have the following SELECT statement in a stored procedure SELECT RULE ,TITLE ,SUM(IF(t.PASSED='Y',1,0)) AS PASS ,SUM(IF(t.PASSED='N',1,0)) AS FAIL FROM ( SELECT a.line_order ,MAX(CASE WHEN a.element_name = 'PASSED' THEN a.`value` END) AS PASSED ,MAX(CASE WHEN a.element_name = 'RULE' THEN a.`value` END) AS RULE ,MAX(CASE WHEN a.element_name = 'TITLE' THEN a.`value` END) AS TITLE FROM Details a WHERE run_id = runId GROUP BY line_order ) t GROUP BY RULE, TITLE; *runId is an input parameter to the stored procedure. This query takes about 14 seconds to run. The table has 214856 rows, and the particular run_id I am filtering on has 162204 records. It's not on a super high power machine, but I feel like I could be doing this more efficiently. My main goal is to summarize by Rule and Title and show Pass and Fail count columns.

  • Stored Procedure: Reducing Table Data

    - by SumGuy
Hi Guys, A simple question about Stored Procedures. I have one stored procedure collecting a whole bunch of data in a table. I then call this procedure from within another stored procedure. I can copy the data into a new table created in the calling procedure but as far as I can see the tables have to be identical. Is this right? Or is there a way to insert only the data I want? For example.... I have one procedure which returns this: SELECT @batch as Batch, @Count as Qty, pd.Location, cast(pd.GL as decimal(10,3)) as [Length], cast(pd.GW as decimal(10,3)) as Width, cast(pd.GT as decimal(10,3)) as Thickness FROM propertydata pd GROUP BY pd.Location, pd.GL, pd.GW, pd.GT I then call this procedure but only want the following data: DECLARE @BatchTable TABLE ( Batch varchar(50), [Length] decimal(10,3), Width decimal(10,3), Thickness decimal(10,3), ) INSERT @BatchTable (Batch, [Length], Width, Thickness) EXEC dbo.batch_drawings_NEW @batch So in the second command I don't want the Qty and Location values. However the code above keeps returning the error: "Insert Error: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table"

  • Select 2 Rows from Table when COUNT of another table

    - by Marcus
Here is the code that I currently have: SELECT `A`.* FROM `A` LEFT JOIN `B` ON `A`.`A_id` = `B`.`value_1` WHERE `B`.`value_2` IS NULL AND `B`.`userid` IS NULL ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 2 What it currently is supposed to do is select 2 rows from A when the 2 rows A_id being selected are not in value_1 or value_2 in B. And the rows in B are specific to individual users with userid. What I need to do is make it also so that also checks if there are already N rows in B matching a A_id (either in value_1, or value_2) and userid, and if there are more than N rows, it doesn't select the A row.

  • Run SSIS Package from T-SQL

    - by Dr. Zim
I noticed you can use the following stored procedures (in order) to schedule a SSIS package: msdb.dbo.sp_add_category @class=N'JOB', @type=N'LOCAL', @name=N'[Uncategorized (Local)]' msdb.dbo.sp_add_job ... msdb.dbo.sp_add_jobstep ... msdb.dbo.sp_update_job ... msdb.dbo.sp_add_jobschedule ... msdb.dbo.sp_add_jobserver ... (You can see an example by right clicking a scheduled job and selecting "Script Job as- Create To".) AND you can use sp_start_job to execute the job immediately, effectively running SSIS packages on demand. Question: does anyone know of any msdb.dbo.[...] stored procedures that simply allow you to run SSIS packages on the fly without using sp_cmdshell directly, or some easier approach?
