  • Why would you want a case sensitive database?

    - by Khorkrak
What are some reasons for choosing a case sensitive collation over a case insensitive one? I can see perhaps a modest performance gain for the DB engine in doing string comparisons. Is that it? If your data is set to all lower or uppercase then case sensitive could be reasonable but it's a disaster if you store mixed case data and then try to query it. You have then apply a lower() function on the column so that it'll match the corresponding lower case string literal. This prevents index usage in every dbms. So wondering why anyone would use such an option.

  • Return nested alias for linq expression

    - by Schotime
I have the following Linq Expression var tooDeep = shoppers .Where(x => x.Cart.CartSuppliers.First().Name == "Supplier1") .ToList(); I need to turn the name part into the following string. x.Cart.CartSuppliers.Name As part of this I turned the Expression into a string and then split on the . and removed the First() argument. However, when I get to CartSuppliers this returns a Suppliers[] array. Is there a way to get the single type from this. eg. I need to get a Supplier back. Thanks

  • OpenSSL "Seal" in C (or via shell)

    - by chpwn
I'm working on porting some PHP code to C, that contacts a web API. The issue I've come across is that the PHP code uses the function openssl_seal(), but I can't seem to find any way to do the same thing in C or even via openssl in a call to system(). From the PHP manual on openssl_seal(): int openssl_seal ( string $data , string &$sealed_data , array &$env_keys , array $pub_key_ids ) openssl_seal() seals (encrypts) data by using RC4 with a randomly generated secret key. The key is encrypted with each of the public keys associated with the identifiers in pub_key_ids and each encrypted key is returned in env_keys . This means that one can send sealed data to multiple recipients (provided one has obtained their public keys). Each recipient must receive both the sealed data and the envelope key that was encrypted with the recipient's public key. What would be the best way to implement this? I'd really prefer not to call out to a PHP script every time, for obvious reasons.

  • regex to match postgresql bytea

    - by filiprem
In PostgreSQL, there is a BLOB datatype called bytea. It's just an array of bytes. bytea literals are output in the following way: '\\037\\213\\010\\010\\005`Us\\000\\0001.fp3\'\\223\\222%' See PostgreSQL docs for full definition of the format. I'm trying to construct a Perl regular expression which will match any such string. It should also match standard ANSI SQL string literals, like 'Joe', 'Joe''s Mom', 'Fish Called ''Wendy''' It should also match backslash-escaped variant: 'Joe\'s Mom', . First aproach (shown below) works only for some bytea representations. s{ ' # Opening apostrophe (?: # Start group [^\\\'] # Anything but a backslash or an apostrophe | # or \\ . # Backslash and anything | # or \'\' # Double apostrophe )* # End of group ' # Closing apostrophe }{LITERAL_REPLACED}xgo; For other (longer ones, with many escaped apostrophes, Perl gives such warning: Complex regular subexpression recursion limit (32766) exceeded at ./sqa.pl line 33, < line 1. So I am looking for a better (but still regex-based) solution, it probably requires some regex alchemy (avoiding backreferences and all).

  • Problem with MultiColumn Primary Key

    - by Mike
DataTable NetPurch = new DataTable(); DataColumn[] Acct_n_Prod = new DataColumn[2]; DataColumn Account; Account = new DataColumn(); Account.DataType = typeof(string); Account.ColumnName = "Acct"; DataColumn Product; Product = new DataColumn(); Product.DataType = typeof(string); Product.ColumnName = "Prod"; NetPurch.Columns.Add(Account); NetPurch.Columns.Add(Product); Acct_n_Prod[0] = Account; Acct_n_Prod[1] = Product; NetPurch.PrimaryKey = Acct_n_Prod; NetPurch.Columns.Add(MoreColumns); the code is based on the example here When it is compiled and runs i get an error saying: "Expecting 2 values for the key being indexed but received only one" if I make Acct_n_Prod = new DataColumn[1] and comment out the line adding product to the acct-n-prod array then it runs fine I'm fairly new to this so I'm not sure where the error is Thanks, -Mike

  • Pros and cons of ways of storing an unsigned int without an unsigned int data type

    - by fields
I have values that are 64-bit unsigned ints, and I need to store them in mongodb, which has no unsigned int type. I see three main possibilities for storing them in other field types, and converting on going in and out: Using a signed int is probably easiest and most space efficient, but has the disadvantage that they're not human readable and if someone forgets to do the conversion, some of them will work, which may obscure errors. Raw binary is probably most difficult for inexperienced programmers to deal with, and also suffers from non-human-readability. A string representation is the least space efficient (~40 bytes in unicode vs 8 bytes per field), but then at least all of the possible values will map properly, and for querying only a conversion to string is required instead of a more complicated conversion. I need these values to be available from different platforms, so a single driver-specific solution isn't an option. Any major pros and cons I've missed? Which one would you use?

  • design for a wrapper around command-line utilities

    - by hatchetman82
im trying to come up with a design for a wrapper for use when invoking command line utilities in java. the trouble with runtime.exec() is that you need to keep reading from the process' out and err streams or it hangs when it fills its buffers. this has led me to the following design: public class CommandLineInterface { private final Thread stdOutThread; private final Thread stdErrThread; private final OutputStreamWriter stdin; private final History history; public CommandLineInterface(String command) throws IOException { this.history = new History(); this.history.addEntry(new HistoryEntry(EntryTypeEnum.INPUT, command)); Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command); stdin = new OutputStreamWriter(process.getOutputStream()); stdOutThread = new Thread(new Leech(process.getInputStream(), history, EntryTypeEnum.OUTPUT)); stdOutThread.setDaemon(true); stdOutThread.start(); stdErrThread = new Thread(new Leech(process.getErrorStream(), history, EntryTypeEnum.ERROR)); stdErrThread.setDaemon(true); stdErrThread.start(); } public void write(String input) throws IOException { this.history.addEntry(new HistoryEntry(EntryTypeEnum.INPUT, input)); stdin.write(input); stdin.write("\n"); stdin.flush(); } } public class Leech implements Runnable{ private final InputStream stream; private final History history; private final EntryTypeEnum type; private volatile boolean alive = true; public Leech(InputStream stream, History history, EntryTypeEnum type) { this.stream = stream; this.history = history; this.type = type; } public void run() { BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(stream)); String line; try { while(alive) { line = reader.readLine(); if (line==null) break; history.addEntry(new HistoryEntry(type, line)); } } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } my issue is with the Leech class (used to "leech" the process' out and err streams and feed them into history - which acts like a log file) - on the one hand reading whole lines is nice and easy (and what im currently doing), but it means i miss the last line (usually the prompt line). i only see the prompt line when executing the next command (because there's no line break until that point). on the other hand, if i read characters myself, how can i tell when the process is "done" ? (either complete or waiting for input) has anyone tried something like waiting 100 millis since the last output from the process and declaring it "done" ? any better ideas on how i can implement a nice wrapper around things like runtime.exec("cmd.exe") ?

  • Android: handle unexpected internet disconnect while downloading data

    - by M.A. Cape
Hi, I have here a function that downloads data from a remote server to file. I am still not confident with my code. My question is, what if while reading the stream and saving the data to a file and suddenly I was disconnected in the internet, will these catch exceptions below can really catch that kind of incident? If not, can you suggest how to handle this kind of incident? Note: I call this function in a thread so that the UI won't be blocked. public static boolean getFromRemote(String link, String fileName, Context context){ boolean dataReceived = false; ConnectivityManager connec = (ConnectivityManager)context.getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE); if (connec.getNetworkInfo(0).isConnected() || connec.getNetworkInfo(1).isConnected()){ try { HttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet httpGet = new HttpGet(link); HttpParams params = httpClient.getParams(); HttpConnectionParams.setConnectionTimeout(params, 30000); HttpConnectionParams.setSoTimeout(params, 30000); HttpResponse response; response = httpClient.execute(httpGet); int statusCode = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode(); if (statusCode == 200){ HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); InputStream in = null; OutputStream output = null; try{ in = entity.getContent(); String secondLevelCacheDir = context.getCacheDir() + fileName; File imageFile = new File(secondLevelCacheDir); output= new FileOutputStream(imageFile); IOUtilities.copy(in, output); output.flush(); } catch (IOException e) { Log.e("SAVING", "Could not load xml", e); } finally { IOUtilities.closeStream(in); IOUtilities.closeStream(output); dataReceived = true; } } }catch (SocketTimeoutException e){ //Handle not connecting to client !!!! • django internationalization and translations problem

    - by Zayatzz
I have a problem with django translations. Problem 1 - i updated string in django.po file, but the change does not appear on the webpage. Problem 2 - i have created my own locale file with django-admin.py makemessages -l et, added the translation string into file, but they too do not appear on the page. I do not think this is setting problem, because the translations from django.po file do appear on the website, its just the changes and the translations from my own generated file that do not appear. Edit: My settings.py contains this: gettext = lambda s: s LANGUAGE_CODE = 'et' LANGUAGES = ( ('et', gettext('Estonian')), ) my own locale files are in /path/to/project/locale/et/LC_MESSAGES/ and the files are django.mo and django.po the file i refer to in problem 1 is django own et transaltion, which i changed.

  • Style list of divs as 2 column layout with css

    - by Anders Svensson
    I'm trying out ASP.NET MVC 2 by going through the "NerdDinner" tutorial. But apparently version 2 of MVC doesn't create a Details page the same as in the tutorial, and you get divs with css classes on them to style. However, I want to get the style where each label is followed on the same line with the field, and I can't do it, I get them on top of each other, or if I try using floats weird things happen (probably because I don't know exactly how to use it in this situation, where every other div should be on the same line). Here's the generated html for the Details page: <fieldset> <legend>Fields</legend> <div> <div class="display-label">DinnerID</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.DinnerID %></div> <div class="display-label">Title</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.Title %></div> <div class="display-label">EventDate</div> <div class="display-field"><%: String.Format("{0:g}", Model.EventDate) %></div> <div class="display-label">Description</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.Description %></div> <div class="display-label">HostedBy</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.HostedBy %></div> <div class="display-label">ContactPhone</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.ContactPhone %></div> <div class="display-label">Address</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.Address %></div> <div class="display-label">Country</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.Country %></div> <div class="display-label">Latitude</div> <div class="display-field"><%: String.Format("{0:F}", Model.Latitude) %></div> <div class="display-label">Longitude</div> <div class="display-field"><%: String.Format("{0:F}", Model.Longitude) %></div> <div class="display-label">IsValid</div> <div class="display-field"><%: Model.IsValid %></div> </div> </fieldset> How do I get the display-label and display-field for each "entry" to appear on the same line?

  • Write subquery in Criteria of nHibernate.

    - by Bipul
I read about subquery in Criteria, but I am still unable to grasp it properly. So, here I am taking one example and if somebody can help me writing that using subquery it will be great. Lets say we have table Employee{EmployeeId.(int),Name(string),Post(string),No_Of_years_working(int)} Now I want all the employees who are Managers and working for less than 10 years. I know that we can get the result without using subqueries but I wanna use subquery just to understand how it works in criteria. So, how I can write Criteria using subquery to get those employees. Thanks

  • Entity Framework connection metadata extraction

    - by James
Hi, I am using the EntityFramework POCO adapter and since there are limitations to what microsoft gives access to with regards to the meta data, i am manually extracting the information i need out of the xml. The only problem is i want to get the ssdl, msl, csdl file names to load without having to directly check for the connection string node in app.config. In short where in the ObjectContext/EntityConnection can i get access to these file names? Worst case scenario i need to get the connection name from the EntityConnection object then load this from app.config and parse the string itself and extract the filenames myself. (But i obviously don't want to do that). Thanks

  • Getting a char array from a vector<int>?

    - by Legend
I am trying to pass a value from C++ to TCL. As I cannot pass pointers without the use of some complicated modules, I was thinking of converting a vector to a char array and then passing this as a null terminated string (which is relatively easy). I have a vector as follows: 12, 32, 42, 84 which I want to convert into something like: "12 32 42 48" The approach I am thinking of is to use an iterator to iterate through the vector and then convert each integer into its string representation and then add it into a char array (which is dynamically created initially by passing the size of the vector). Is this the right way or is there a function that already does this?

  • Cure for puzzle piece programming habits?

    - by Recursion
Even though I went to a decent CS school, I was still taught with the mentality of programming with puzzle pieces. By puzzle pieces I mean, looking up code segments at each step of the development process and adding them together as needed. Eventually gathering all of the pieces and having a properly working program. So as an example, if in my program the next step is to tokenize a string, I go to google and search "how do I tokenize a string in language". All instead of critically thinking about its implementation. I personally don't think its a very good way to program and I always seem to forget everything that I have searched for. So how can I get out of this puzzle piece mode of programmer that I was taught.

  • ASP.NET - Overriding Gridview OnRowCreated to add sort images -- columns are null

    - by Zach
I'm overriding the onrowcreated to add sort images to the header row of a gridview. This works, but actually adding a sortexpression doesn't. What I want to do is set the images as imagebuttons and set their commandarguments to the sort expression of the column they are sorting for. I would assume I could get the cell and from it's index get the gridviewcolumn. Then, I could just get the sortexpression of the gridview column, but this does not work. The columns are null. OnRowCreated Code snippet below: //if this is the header row, we add sort images to each cell if (row.RowType == DataControlRowType.Header) { //iterate through the cells for (int i = 0; i < row.Cells.Count; i++) { //if the column is sortable and visible if (this.Columns[i].SortExpression != string.Empty && this.Columns[i].Visible) { string strSort = this.Columns[i].SortExpression; } } } Can we not get columns in OnRowCreated like this?

I though I'd stick with the default connection pool (Hibernate changed its default from Commons DBCP to c3p0) as I don't have any good reason to choose a non-default pool. At least non but having used DBCP before. The upgrade went pretty much without any problems so far. The only thing I can't get to work is passing properties to the underlying MySQL JDBC4Connection. Up to now, I used DBCP's BasicDataSource.addConnectionProperty(String,String) to pass properties (useUnicode=true, characterEncodin=UTF-8, characterSetResults=UTF-8, zeroDateTimeBehavior=convertToNull). However, I can't find any way to do the same with c3p0 other than including them in the JDBC URL. (That's something I'd like to avoid as I wanna keep the URL configurable without forcing users to include those parameters.) So far, I've tried to use a ConnectionCustomizer without success. Any other suggestions?
