  • which is better performance, using a disposable local variable or reusing a global one?

    - by petervaz
    This is for an android game. Suppose I have a function that is called several times for second and do some calculations involving an arraylist (or any other complex objects for what matter). Which approach would be preffered? local: private void doStuff(){ ArrayList<Type> XList = new ArrayList<Type>(); // do stuff with list } global: private ArrayList<Type> XList = new ArrayList<Type>(); private void doStuff(){ XList.clear(); // do stuff with list }

  • Why am I getting such slow file transfer performance?

    - by kingdango
Copying 4GB from a USB flash drive to my Linux partition. The flash drive is NTFS formatted (I believe, it's Windows formatted). The transfer is incredibly slow and blocks the computer frequently causing lag and hanging applications. My transfer rate is 1.2 MB/sec and that is the max it has hit when I let the File Operations window have focus. Why is this so slow under Ubuntu and significantly faster in Win 7?

  • How to check areas to load in ASP.NET MVC?

    - by user1741807
I have a ASP.NET MVC application which uses areas for the different features of the application. It should display different features dependent on which version of the application the customer have. I need to check which areas to display. But how do I check which areas to display? Is it just to wrap the menu in an if statement to check if the customer have a version of the application that is allowed to see the area?

  • Do unused vertices in a 3D object affect performance?

    - by Gajet
For my game I need to generate a mesh dynamically. Now I'm wondering does it have a noticeable affect in FPS if I allocate more vertices than what I'm actually using or not? and does it matter if I'm using DirectX or OpenGL? Edit Final output will be a w*h cell grid, but for technical issues it's much easier for me to allocate (w+1)*(h+1) vertices. Sure I'll only use w*h vertices in indexing, and I know there is some memory wasting there, but I want to know if it also affect FPS or not? (Note that mesh is only generated once in each time you play the game)

  • GUI won't load, but the desktop background loads. Can't access the terminal

    - by Mickeysofine
Having trouble with the Ubuntu GUI. I can log in just fine (see this)... everything looks normal there. But as soon as I put in my password, I get this. I tried a few different troubleshooting keyboard commands (ctrl+alt+t, crtl+alt+delete), and only the latter worked. I can interact with that window just fine, except I am unable to resize or move it. The first time I logged in, I got a dialog box that said, "Ubuntu has experienced an internal error. Send error report?" Doesn't say anything now. Yes I tried restarting it. Thanks a bunch, Michael EDIT: Trying to start a guest session leads to the same problem.

  • Slow in the Application, Fast in SSMS? Understanding Performance Mysteries

When I read various forums about SQL Server, I frequently see questions from deeply mystified posters. They have identified a slow query or stored procedure in their application. They cull the SQL batch from the application and run it in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to analyse it, only to find that the response is instantaneous. At this point they are inclined to think that SQL Server is all about magic. A similar mystery is when a developer has extracted a query in his stored procedure to run it stand-alone only to find that it runs much faster – or much slower – than inside the procedure.

  • How to load kernel from live cd on UEFI install of Ubuntu 12.10?

    - by Geezanansa
Running a GYGABYTE FM1 motherboard which is using a AMD 3870k APU with a new WS Caviar 1TB HDD. Following the advice in the Motherboard manual and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI have now got to grub screen for UEFI install. The dvd.iso being used is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop amd64. The hdd has had a gpt partition table made for, by using gparted when in a live desktop session(booted in bios mode)but decided to leave it unformatted with the intention of using installer to set up partitions. Booting live dvd gives grub list with the option to "install ubuntu" but get "can not read cd/0" and "the kernel must be loaded first" errors; when that option is selected. Any pointers on how to get installer going for UEFI install would be good. Thanks in advance.

  • When choosing a domain does including your brand affect SEO performance?

    - by bpeterson76
I've been asked to build a "landing page" for a local branch of an international corporation. While the corporation has a well-established domain name, the local office wants to use a unique, separate url that will be easy for them to relay to clients. However, the corporation is considered a category leader, so the local office is also concerned about the importance to carrying over the company's brand to the URL. Questions that have arisen: From an SEO perspective, is there a benefit to including the brand name in the URL? Would it be more beneficial to buy a domain that relates generically to the INDUSTRY as opposed to the specific brand name? Would the benefits of an easy-to-remember, short domain outweigh any SEO benefits that might be gained by a longer, brand-specific domain?

    - by Jakobud
When I'm logged into our Windows Server 2003 server, I don't see any ODBC Data Sources, but when a different user logs in (who doesn't have Administrative rights), they have a big list of ODBC Data Sources. Are ODBC Data Sources set on a per-user basis? How come the Administrator can't see user's ODBC Data Sources?

  • Should I be relying on WebTests for data validation?

    - by Alexander Kahoun
I have a suite of web tests created for a web service. I use it for testing a particular input method that updates a SQL Database. The web service doesn't have a way to retrieve the data, that's not its purpose, only to update it. I have a validator that validates the response XML that the web service generates for each request. All that works fine. It was suggested by a teammate that I add data validation so that I check the database to see the data after the initial response validator runs and compare it with what was in the input request. We have a number of services and libraries that are separate from the web service I'm testing that I can use to get the data and compare it. The problem is that when I run the web test the data validation always fails even when the request succeeds. I've tried putting the thread to sleep between the response validation and the data validation but to no avail; It always gets the data from before the response validation. I can set a break point and visually see that the data has been updated in the DB, funny thing is when I step through it in debug with the breakpoint it does validate successfully. Before I get too much more into this issue I have to ask; Is this the purpose of web tests? Should I be able to validate data through service calls in this manner or am I asking too much of a web test and the response validation is as far as I should go?

  • Am I correctly extracting JPEG binary data from this mysqldump?

    - by Glenn
I have a very old .sql backup of a vbulletin site that I ran around 8 years ago. I am trying to see the file attachments that are stored in the DB. The script below extracts them all and is verified to be JPEG by hex dumping and checking the SOI (start of image) and EOI (end of image) bytes (FFD8 and FFD9, respectively) according to the JPEG wiki page. But when I try to open them with evince, I get this message "Error interpreting JPEG image file (JPEG datastream contains no image)" What could be going on here? Some background info: sqldump is around 8 years old vbulletin 2.x was the software that stored the info most likely php 4 was used most likely mysql 4.0, possibly even 3.x the column datatype these attachments are stored in is mediumtext My Python 3.1 script: #!/usr/bin/env python3.1 import re trim_l = re.compile(b"""^INSERT INTO attachment VALUES\('\d+', '\d+', '\d+', '(.+)""") trim_r = re.compile(b"""(.+)', '\d+', '\d+'\);$""") extractor = re.compile(b"""^(.*(?:\.jpe?g|\.gif|\.bmp))', '(.+)$""") with open('attachments.sql', 'rb') as fh: for line in fh: data = trim_l.findall(line)[0] data = trim_r.findall(data)[0] data = extractor.findall(data) if data: name, data = data[0] try: filename = 'files/%s' % str(name, 'UTF-8') ah = open(filename, 'wb') ah.write(data) except UnicodeDecodeError: continue finally: ah.close() fh.close() update The JPEG wiki page says FF bytes are section markers, with the next byte indicating the section type. I see some that are not listed in the wiki page (specifically, I see a lot of 5C bytes, so FF5C). But the list is of "common markers" so I'm trying to find a more complete list. Any guidance here would also be appreciated.

  • C#/.Net Error: MySql.Data Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

    - by Simon
Hello, I get this exception on my Windows 7 64bit in application running in VS 2008 express. I am using Connector/Net 6.2.2.0: Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Source: MySql.Data in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.NativeDriver.GetResult(Int32& affectedRow, Int32& insertedId) Stack trace: in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.Driver.GetResult(Int32 statementId, Int32& affectedRows, Int32& insertedId) in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.Driver.NextResult(Int32 statementId) in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlDataReader.NextResult() in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlDataReader.Close() in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlConnection.Close() in MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlConnection.Dispose(Boolean disposing) in System.ComponentModel.Component.Finalize() No inner exception. This exception is unhalted and the debugger dont point on any code line. It just say "Object reference not set to an instance of an object. MySql.Data" This error is really hard to repeat. On my Windows XP 32bit is all ok. Could it be error in 64bit Windows 7? Thank you very much for your answers. Regards, simon

  • How can I 'transpose' my data using SQL and remove duplicates at the same time?

    - by Remnant
I have the following data structure in my database: LastName FirstName CourseName John Day Pricing John Day Marketing John Day Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Lisa Smith Finance etc... The data shows employess within a business and which courses they have shown a preference to attend. The number of courses per employee will vary (i.e. as above, John has 3 courses and Lisa 2). I need to take this data from the database and pass it to a webpage view (asp.net mvc). I would like the data that comes out of my database to match the view as much as possible and want to transform the data using SQl so that it looks like the following: LastName FirstName Course1 Course2 Course3 John Day Pricing Marketing Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Finance Any thoughts on how this may be achieved? Note: one of the reasons I am trying this approach is that the original data structure does not easily lend itself to be iterated over using the typical mvc syntax: <% foreach (var item in Model.courseData) { %> Because of the duplication of names in the orignal data I would end up with lots of conditionals in my View which I would like to avoid. I have tried transforming the data using c# in my ViewModel but have found it tough going and feel that I could lighten the workload by leveraging SQL before I return the data. Thanks.

  • Why can i not upload images to my folder anymore?

    - by Hannah_B
    This was something I had working a few weeks back but after I made some changes to my view file images are now no longer being saved into my assets/uploads folder. I keep getting back the error - You did not select a file to upload. This is despite having made sure the path is definitely correct. What am i doing wrong here? Here is my controller: <?php class HomeProfile extends CI_Controller { function HomeProfile() { parent::__construct(); $this->load->model("profiles"); $this->load->model("profileimages"); $this->load->helper(array('form', 'url')); } function upload() { $config['path'] = './web-project-jb/assets/uploads/'; $config['allowed_types'] = 'gif|jpg|jpeg|png'; $config['max_size'] = '10000'; $config['max_width'] = '1024'; $config['max_height'] = '768'; $this->load->library('upload', $config); $img = $this->session->userdata('img'); $username = $this->session->userdata('username'); $this->profileimages->putProfileImage($username, $this->input->post("profileimage")); //fail show upload form if (! $this->upload->do_upload()) { $error = array('error'=>$this->upload->display_errors()); $username = $this->session->userdata('username'); $viewData['username'] = $username; $viewData['profileText'] = $this->profiles->getProfileText($username); $this->load->view('shared/header'); $this->load->view('homeprofile/homeprofiletitle', $viewData); $this->load->view('shared/nav'); $this->load->view('homeprofile/upload_fail', $error); $this->load->view('homeprofile/homeprofileview', $viewData, array('error' => ' ' )); $this->load->view('shared/footer'); //redirect('homeprofile/index'); } else { //successful upload so save to database $file_data = $this->upload->data(); $data['img'] = base_url().'./web-project-jb/assets/uploads/'.$file_data['file_name']; // you may want to delete the image from the server after saving it to db // check to make sure $data['full_path'] is a valid path // get upload_sucess.php from link above //$image = chunk_split( base64_encode( file_get_contents( $data['file_name'] ) ) ); $this->username = $this->session->userdata('username'); $data['profileimages'] = $this->profileimages->getProfileImage($username); $viewData['username'] = $username; $viewData['profileText'] = $this->profiles->getProfileText($username); $username = $this->session->userdata('username'); } } function index() { $username = $this->session->userdata('username'); $data['profileimages'] = $this->profileimages->getProfileImage($username); $viewData['username'] = $username; $viewData['profileText'] = $this->profiles->getProfileText($username); $this->load->view('shared/header'); $this->load->view('homeprofile/homeprofiletitle', $viewData); $this->load->view('shared/nav'); //$this->load->view('homeprofile/upload_form', $data); $this->load->view('homeprofile/homeprofileview', $data, $viewData, array('error' => ' ' ) ); $this->load->view('shared/footer'); } } Here is my view: <div id="maincontent"> <div id="primary"> <?//=$error;?> <?//=$img;?> <h3><?="Profile Image"?></h3> <img src="<?php echo'$img'?>" width='300' height='300'/> <?=form_open_multipart('homeprofile/upload');?> <input type="file" name="img" value=""/> <?=form_submit('submit', 'upload')?> <?=form_close();?> <?php if (isset($error)) echo $error;?> </div> </div> Your help is much appreciated

  • How to load an ajax (jquery) request response progressively without waiting for it to finish?

    - by Sebastian
I want to make a form that will use jquery to submit a list of keyword to a php file, this file could take a lot of time to load depending on the size of the keywords list. What I want to do is to load the php response into a div or container in real time without using iframes. All the ajax request I know have to wait until the request has finished before having access to the response, I need to get access to that response even when it hasn't finished so I can update the progress in real time.
