  • Software Engineer's explanation of Facebook photo privacy, with UML diagram?

    Facebook photo privacy is more complex than most people think - including the bloggers who fill the Internet trying to explain it in simple terms. Not only there is the basic album-level privacy setting to consider, but also what happens with Tagging (and related privacy settings) as well as the Share button when clicked by a Friend. Has anybody seen a good, engineering-type (e.g. UML) diagram? I envision it should include the various privacy "states" a photo can be in, what causes state transitions, and the characteristics of each state? Thanks

  • Best way to allow fans/users to contribute to a facebook page now that discussions are gone? [migrated]

    I run a facebook page with over 23,000 fans. I formerly had users submit recipes to the discussions tab. However, now that it is gone, I'm having difficulty finding a way to let users share recipes. If they simply post it in the stream, it goes away much to quickly. I've tried creating a new note with my personal account and tagging my page, but that does not make it show up in my pages "notes" section. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

  • Is it possible to view Facebook news feeds page by page rather than loading it all as I scroll?

    If you want to scroll through your Facebook news feed (be it on the main feed, your personal feed, or in groups) to older parts, you have to scroll to the bottom, wait for the ajax load of the next part of the feed, and repeat. The problem with this is that, if you're scrolling down very far, the HTML document just gets bigger and bigger until your browser starts to die due to the overload of resources brought on by added HTML, text, and even images. This pretty much sets a limit to how far back you can scroll. Clicking on months and years on your personal feed has the same effect of cumulatively adding feed segments to the HTML document. I notice that this month/year feature is not available on the main feed and for groups. If there were a way to literally page through the feed so that only a single page's worth of feed data is loaded at a time, that would make scrolling through it much more doable.

  • Why does XFBML work everywhere but in Chrome?

    I try to add simple Like button to my Facebook Canvas app (iframe). The button (and all other XFBML elements) works in Safari, Firefox, Opera, but in Google Chrome. How can I find the problem?   • Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

    I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this?   • How do I get Facebook Connect to alert me when people comment on my blog?

    I'm using Facebook Connect's "Comments Box" (http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Comments_Box) to handle comments on my blog. However, there doesn't appear to be an easy way to find out when people comment - ideally I'd like to receive an email whenever it happens, but I'd settle for an RSS feed or similar. Is there an easy way to set this up? Officially as an admin you can enable "notifications" but these are just the passive things that show up when you log on to Facebook itself - I rarely do this, and anyway it doesn't seem to work for anonymous comments.

  • Facebook Api - Local development, Testserver, Liveserver ... How?

    I'm working on a new website that uses the Facebook API for users to login and several implementations of the graph Api. My workflow usually is: Development on localhost Development using MAMP/XAMPP or similar software Push to server - testing domain A team of people can test the changes for a few days to see if everything works as planned. Push to server - live domain Changes are live for public Facebook uses the site URL in the appsettings and for security reasons, they will only redirect to that url... Problem is.. I have localhost and 2 different domains. How can I make this work? Ofcourse I could edit the hostsfile, but that only fixes it for localhost.. Still no solution for the testdomain. Please tell me this is somehow possible! I'm getting more and more depressed with the Facebook API.

  • Facebook page linking to external site sign-up process, capture permission to write to wall in process?

    Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site?     I am a newbie who is trying to create a Facebook app using PHP and Facebook's PHP SDK. The app is hosted on Heroku, and the sample app that they provided is working fine. However, I am now trying to get the sample app to work on Apache 2.2, and I have encountered a lot of problems along the way. Well, straight to the point, my latest problem will be trying to do Facebook login on localhost, but the 'An error occurred. Please try later' appears on the popup dialog. This does not happen on Heroku. Will someone please enlighten me on if there's any steps that I can take to overcome this error? I don't think it got to do with any coding error since I am just following the provided sample app. Thanks!

    I'm creating a new rails app for my business, and I just finished a new feature where I can put an announcement on the website (for specials, sales, etc.). I want this announcement to automatically be set to my business' Facebook page. How can I easily do this? Is the only way to create a Facebook application, and then if so, can a Facebook application have permissions to edit a business' page (I know apps can edit user profiles, but I don't know about business pages)?     I've bought many iPhone apps by now, some free and some paid. I've reinstalled my computer, and in the new installation, iTunes is completely blank. On first sync, iTunes downloads the apps that are currently installed on my iPhone. But what about all those apps that I have bought and aren't currently installed? Is there a way to re-download all my apps into iTunes? Where can I see a listing of all the apps I've ever downloaded? (Update: Apparently not all purchased content is restored - some things are inexplicably missing. You won't be charged anew for downloading them again, but you also won't be told what it is that you're missing. See here for details...)

  • Google Apps email hosting for a GoDaddy-hosted site works locally but not on live site

    GoDaddy email issues are plentiful, but I have not been able to find anyone resolve this same problem: I have a GoDaddy hosted site, and a Google Apps account. The MX info on GoDaddy is correct, as is my server-side code, and the Google Apps credentials in my web.config file (host:smtp.gmail.com, port:587) are correct. I know this because I am able to send emails through SmtpClient hosted my local machine's server when debugging the site. However, once transferred to the GoDaddy hosting account, all emails will not send -- they just time out. Nothing has changed aside from the site being run on the GoDaddy server as opposed to a local server. EDIT - SSL is enabled. A two part question: 1) Does anybody have any ideas about how to tackle this? 2) If not, is there another web hosting or email hosting site, or a combination of 2, that people can confirm is fast, actually works, and is not impossible to coordinate as is everything with GoDaddy? (I am aware that GoDaddy has their own relaying email server, but I initially used it before switching to Google and found emails coming in 30-60 minutes late).

  • Progressive Enhancement vs. Single Page Apps

    I just got back from a conference in Boston called An Event Apart. A really popular theme amongst the speakers was the idea of progressive enhancement - a site's content should go in the HTML, and JavaScript should only be used to enhance behavior. The arguments that the speakers gave for progressive enhancement were very compelling. Not only is it a solid pattern for supporting older browsers, and devices on a network with low bandwidth, but HTML fails much more gracefully than JavaScript (i.e. markup that is not supported is just ignored, while if a browser throws an exception while executing your script - you are hosed). Jeremy Keith gave a particularly insightful talk about this. But what about single page web apps like Backbone and Angular? The whole design behind these frameworks seems to push the developer toward moving content out of the HTML, and into something like a JSON API. I can not seem to gel these two design patterns: progressive enhancement vs. single page web apps. Are there instances when one is better than the other? Or are they not even antagonistic technologies, and I am missing something here with my mental model?

  • Ruby Shoes for non-trivial apps

    I've been taking a look at Ruby Shoes for GUI development with Ruby. So far, it's been a pretty good experience for making simple apps. However, I am quite worried about being able to write large scale applications with it. For example, how would I go about using MVP pattern with this framework ? For now, I have not been able to not make presentation concerns leak into the view because of the lack of some kind of "data binding". I have code that looks like this : Shoes.app do @view = SampleView.new @presenter = SamplePresenter.new @view @label = para @view.sample_property button "Update sample_property" do @presenter.update_sample_property end end Here, the call to @presenter.update_sample_property updates @view.sample_property but the label is not updated accordingly. For this to work, I would have to make @presenter.update_sample_property to return a string, and then call @label.text = return_value, but I think that would violate the MVP principle of not having presentation logic in the view. I'm used to work in .Net with the MVP pattern so I don't know if the pattern applies correctly to Shoes like I tried to do. Are there any ressources out there for making non-trivial apps with Shoes ? Especially using the MVP pattern or something similar ? EDIT : I took a look at the shoebox to see what other people have achieved with the framework. Though I did not look through it extensively, at first sight it seems like they are all simple projects with no real purposes.

  • Monitor network connectivity in WP7 apps

    Most interesting Windows Phone apps rely on some network service for their functionality. So at some point in your app you may need to know programmatically if there is network connection available or not. For example, the Translator by Moth app relies on the Bing Translation service for translations. When a request for translation (text or voice) is made, the network call may fail. The failure reason is not evident from any of the return results, so I check the connection to see if it is present. Dependent on that, a different message is shown to the user. Before the translation phase is even reached, at the app start up time the Bing service is queried for its list of  languages; in that case I don't want to show the user a message and instead want to be notified when the network is available in order to send the query out again. So for those two requirements (which I imagine are common in other apps) I wrote a simple wrapper MyNetwork static class to the framework APIs: Call once MyNetwork.MonitorNetworkAvailability() method so it monitors the network change At any time check the MyNetwork.IsConnected property to check for network presence Subscribe to its MyNetwork.ConnectionEstablished event Optionally, during debugging use its MyNetwork.ChangeStatus method to simulate a change in network status As usual, there may be better ways to achieve this, but this class works perfectly for my scenarios.   • Enabling support of EUS and Fusion Apps in OUD

    Since the 11gR2 release, OUD supports Enterprise User Security (EUS) for database authentication and also Fusion Apps. I'll plan to blog on that soon. Meanwhile, the R2 OUD graphical setup does not let you configure both EUS and FusionApps support at the same time. However, it can be done manually using the dsconfig command line. The simplest way to proceed is to select EUS from the setup tool, then manually add support for Fusion Apps using dsconfig using the commands below: - create a FA workflow element with eusWfe as next element: dsconfig create-workflow-element \           --set enabled:true \           --set next-workflow-element:Eus0 \           --type fa \           --element-name faWfe - modify the workflow so that it starts from your FA workflow element instead of Eus: dsconfig set-workflow-prop \           --workflow-name userRoot0 \           --set workflow-element:faWfe  Note: the configuration changes may slightly differ in case multiple databases/suffixes are configured on OUD.

    I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backward", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?

For each application we scanned all the items, looked for the best price at the time, and noted any other relevant benefits of using one scanner over another.   • Oracle ADF and Simplified UI Apps: I18n Feng Shui on Display

    I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on.   • Minimize Apps to the System Tray in Windows with MoveToTray

    Would you like an easy way to minimize apps to the System Tray in Windows and keep your Taskbar clear of clutter? Then all you need is the MoveToTray app to make it happen. MoveToTray does not require installation. Just double click on the exe file or create a shortcut to the app to activate it. When you see the icon for MoveToTray appear in the System Tray you are ready to minimize those apps. To minimize the active app window use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Alt + M” and watch it instantly disappear to the System Tray. To maximize the window simply double click on the app’s icon in the System Tray. Sometimes an app’s regular icon will not display in the System Tray and a copy of MoveToTray’s icon will appear in its’ place (i.e. Paint.NET in our example). Note: There may occasionally be an app that will not minimize to the System Tray. Only one (CubicExplorer) would not minimize during our tests.
