• Forgot to unmount/eject external hdd, lost moved files. OSX

  So I was using my mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10gigs of data to it (via drag and drop while holding command to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive alright, but as I was having some issues and finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hdd back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. How can I recover these files, as it was a lot of data! Cheers.

• Online OCR website for processing an entire pdf file at one time?

  I am looking for an online OCR website for processing a multi-page pdf file at one time. Free preferably. I know http://www.newocr.com/. If I am correct, it can only OCR one page at a time, by manually clicking "Preview" and then clicking "OCR" for each page. After each page is OCRed, I have to copy out the text result manually too. If my pdf file has 30~ pages, it will be tedious to repeat the above process for each page. I wonder if there is some other online websites that OCR a whole pdf file, without asking me for manual operation? Thanks!

  Hello everyone I have a SD memory card which is of local manufacturer it allows to read & copy from it but not write as it is now write-protected so i want to format that card but could not. To format this card I have tried 1) DD command 2) mkfs -f vfat command 3) creating registry entry under storage device policy in window with write value 0 4) disk part command in window to clear attributes in which it show all attributes are clear ie no write protection 5) I format card in windows through control panel - administrative tools- computer management - disk management, then it show as formatted but when I tried to create new partition it give CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK error 6) I downloaded a format utility from transcend site and formatted first it shows write protected again doing format it formats and tells to remove and reinsert after reinsertion it shows the previous data as it is

• Windows 8 permissions vs Windows 7 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I disable administrator prompt in Windows 8? When I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, I noticed some permissions issues extremely problematic to my using the OS. When running Windows 7 or Vista with UAC off, I was able to navigate around the filesystem as if I was on Windows XP and prior such that I didn't have to run as administrator and could copy and edit files wherever I wanted. In Windows 8, turning off UAC no longer does this. Does anyone know how to get Windows 8's permissions to act like Windows 7 and Vista when UAC is disabled? NOTE: I did a clean install on my laptop with Windows 8, and it has the same issues.

• Lotus Notes - Fails to move inbox article to subfolder

  Lotus Notes 8.5 - yuck! User is trying to move an email from the Inbox into a subfolder and is using the menu option (not dragging & dropping) the email simply fails to move. It just appears again in the inbox. Drag and drop has the same effect! I have checked that it is a failure to move and not just a copy/delete issue. I am not a Notes adminstrator, being more of a MS Exchange administrator by career path and have no idea what to be looking for.

• Making a Live Thumb drive boot with Persistent files, settings AND *drivers* that load on boot?

  I have seen https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent but it's a mess. What methods support persistent drivers as well as files and settings and don't screw up lifespan of the flash drive? I'd like to see your personal recommendations on say, Portable Linux, USB Creator, Remastersys + Unetbootin, etc Backstory: I have a Inspiron 1525 that's hard drive has been slowly dying. I want to switch to a live USB/CD/DVD system until I can get it repaired but my laptops internal wifi device requires a network connection by another means for Xubuntu to let it work, and then I have to enter my Wifi key again, and THEN I have to reinstall Skype etc... I'd be damned every time I have to shut the laptop down. I'm ok with making a shell script for installing apps and copying settings as required but a good persistent install should make this old hat and slow and it doesn't take care of drivers. The last time I tried making an ISO with Remastersys it didn't seem to copy all the required settings.

• Spotlight Infinite Indexing issue (external data drive)

  This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will. I have tried several things - here is a list: - make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue - run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred - wipe out all ACLs on entire drive - set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777 - remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive - transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems) - use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it. In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again. So there it is. It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5. Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before. He needs to be able to query for results. Anyone got any ideas? ---update 2-6-11 Since I have not received any responses except the one below which appears to misunderstand my point, I am updating this post hoping to get more responses. I have used the terminal command sudo opensnoop -p PID where PID is the mdworker process ID to try and determine what Spotlight is doing and hopefully find the files it's having trouble with. Here's what happens: After indexing for a few hours, mdworker is gone. It no longer shows up in Activity Monitor under "All Processes" and the Terminal window with the opensnoop result stops moving. I then proceeded to execute the same command on mds to see what it was doing and here's what I get, repeatedly: 501 57 mds 21 / 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Sno Leppard 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Tiger 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Leppard 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Disk Warrior 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/ONM Data These represent all the volumes currently mounted in the system. All except ONM Data, which is the one I am trying to index, are excluded from SPotlight indexing at the moment. The sequence above repeats over and over, with slight variation, sometimes skipping one of the volumes. Questions - what happened to mdworker? What is mds doing? I will let this run until tomorrow morning and throughout the day and monitor for any changes. Any input would be very much appreciated. Even if you're not sure what the ultimate answer is, please alert me to anything you think I may be missing. Hopefully at some point we will figure this out... Thanks, M __final edit__ I finally resolved the issue and here is how I did it. I used the terminal command "sudo opensnoop -p PID" where the PID is the process id of the processes I was monitoring. I was looking at all instances of mds and mdworker running in the system. After the third time through indexing the same data set (see info above), I contacted Apple and got to their highest level of support - they were flabbergasted as well. They advised me to install yet another default 10.6.6 system and try again. The same pattern repeated - mds and mdworker(s) would start indexing and eventually the spotlight icon would say 6 hours remaining and all mdworkers were gone, mds at 90% or so of CPU. But I did finally figure out that the first time mdworker stopped like that, the last file it touched was always in the same folder. I excluded that folder from spotlight search and the rest of the data set indexed within about 2 hours with no strange behavior or failures. I copied that folder to another machine and Spotlight barfed immediately. Exclude that folder and all is well again. I have no clue what is causing this behavior, still, but I did find a functional solution to the problem. Anyone with a similar problem - run opensnoop on all instances of mds and mdworker and wait patiently for wdworker to exit. Look at the last file it touched and exclude the enclosing folder from being indexed. I was able to repeat the issue and solution on 2 different installs and 2 different copies of the data set. Hope this helps. If we find an actual cause of the folder being such a problem (it is called MICHAEL BRECKER RECORD SOLOS and contains almost 1 GB of audio related files - performer, live, SD2 - things like that), I will edit again to let you all know.   This page list a way to do a clean install of Snow Leopard without loosing any of your settings. This sounds pretty darn good since my mac did get a bit slower over time. The method basically involves copying your existing drive to an external one, then doing an Erase and Install from the installation DVD. After the installation, supposedly, I'll be presented with an option to migrate settings from another Mac. I am not all that familiar with the Mac, hence what is probably a simple question. With this migration option, will I be able to copy over all my applications or will I have to reinstall them from scratch?

  Hi, I switch between a Mac and Ubuntu often. On my Ubuntu box, I use an Apple Aluminum keyboard. I'm interested in Apple's "command" key: ? (I'm not concerned about the hardware control keys) cmd-T opens a browser tab cmd-C, cmd-V for copy/paste, especially in a terminal window control-c maintains the same meaning in terminal (abort) Just switching the control & command keys in Ubuntu would almost get me there, except for the special behaviour of the keys a terminal (Terminal is my most frequently used app). Has it been done? edit: using Gnome, not KDE

• What's the easiest way to migrate one Mac OSX volume to another

  I want to move a volume from a smaller drive to a larger unformatted one. What is the best way to achieve this? Ideally I'd like the new volume to have the same name as the older volume as it contains user accounts, and is a destination of various symlinks that I have on other volumes. Update: I used Carbon Copy Cloner in the end and it worked perfectly. I was able to simply rename the new volume in Finder to the same name as the old volume and then powered down and removed the old drive on which the volume lived. When I restarted, the new volume seamlessly worked in place of the old volume.

• Windows 7 Natively on Mac OS X Bootcamp, Airport Wifi Unable To Connect....

  Hello! I am using a brand new MacBook Pro. I am running a copy of Windows 7 natively via bootcamp (No use of Virtual Machine Software at all). However the only way I can get Windows to connect to the internet is via ethernet, as opposed to the Macs Airport card picking up the wireless. It just refuses to connect, and gives me a limited access status. Any ideas!? I've run Windows XP natively via bootcamp and I had a few issues with the network constantly dropping out, however I blamed that on the drivers and the general shiteness of XP.... Help greatly appreciated.

• How to proceed setting up a secondary mysql linux slave?

  I have a mysql database master and slave in production. I want to setup additional mysql slave. There is around 15 Terabyte of data in the database and there are MYISAM and InnoDB tables in the database. I am thinking of below options: Shutdown master database and copy the mysql data folder to secondary slave. Can Innodb tables be copied like this? Run flush table with read lock, scp the file to new slave and unlock the table and this is possible for myisam tables, can I do the same for innodb tables too? Thanks for looking at the question.

• Folder/File permission transfer between alike file structure

  So my company has recently upgraded to a new SAN but the person who copied all the data over must have done a drag n' drop or basic copy to move everything. Apparently Xcopy is not something he cared to use. So now I am left with the task of duplicating all the permissions over. The structure has changed a bit ( as in more files/folders have been added) but for the most part has been stayed unchanged. I'm looking for suggestions to help automate this process. Can I use XCopy to transfer ONLY permissions to one tree from another? Would i just ignore any folders/permissions that don't line up correctly? Thanks a ton in advance, Tyler

• Windows XP - removing write protection for usb drives

  I have a laptop who used to belong to my company and when I plug in a usb memory drive, I cannot write any files to it. This is because company policy did not allow writing to usb drives without a special authorization (to prevent theft of files). However the laptop is now mine, and I was given the administrator password, so I am guessing that as administrator I can remove this protection somehow. How can I do this? Currently if I try to copy a file to the drive, Windows simply tells me that the drive is write-protected, whatever usb drive I plug in. Maybe it is some registry setting? Thank you.

  Hi all, Pulling my hair out here. I recently replaced my D: 1TB drive (not a system drive) with a new 1.5TB drive. I loaded Windows XP, formatted the new drive and it was showing as working fine, alongside my C: windows system drive. I restart my machine and all of a sudden, Windows doesn't load and instead I get: "Windows could not start beause the following file is missing or corrupt" \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM I don't have the original XP installation CD, although I do have another copy of XP, when I try and boot to it, I get the blue 'STOP' screen after it attempts to load the setup utlity for about a minute. Can someone please help? When I set up my new hard drive as a primary partition did this someone screw up my C: hard drive? Did it perhaps unmount it somehow? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks

• Win 7 accessing large files uses 100% RAM

  Running Win 7 64-bit SP1 with 8 GB RAM. I first noticed this problem when using the GUI to copy some large (5+ GB) files from one disk to another. What happens is the physical memory in use rises quite quickly to 100% and the system comes to a crawl. If I just start to access the file in a media player (it is a movie) the memory usage climbs up slowly but eventually reaches 100%. When copying the same files via XCOPY I do not have this problem. Using RAMMAP I see most of the memory usage is under "Mapped File" and is allocated under the "Active" column. If I select "Empty System Working Set" the RAM usage drops back down but then starts to climb back up. Any ideas on what I can check/test to eliminate this issue?

  I have to test a homebrew server that accepts a lot of incoming TCP traffic on a single port. The protocol is homebrew as well. For testing purposes, I'd like to send this traffic both : - to the production server (say, listening on port 12345) - to the test server (say, listening on port 23456) My clients apps are "dumb" : they never read data back, and the server never replies anyway, my server only accepts connections, and do statistical computations and store/forward/service both raw and computed data. Actually, client apps and hardware are so simple there is no way I can tell clients to send their stream on both servers... And using "fake" clients is not good enough. What could be the simplest solution ? I can of course write an intermediary app that just copy incoming data and send it back to the testing server, pretending to be the client. • XP Mode in Windows 7 professional recently ceased to work

  I have used Windows XP Mode in Windows Professional 7 once a week for around 2 years to run Quicken 98. About 2 weeks ago the XP Mode completely stopped working. I get different responses when I try to launch. I can sometimes see a launch screen for XP (which I never used to get) which then hangs Sometimes I just get a black screen Sometimes I get an error message in a cmd like interface that says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. I have noticed that in the tools tab at the top of the screen "enable integration features" is greyed out. Any recommendations? Ian

• OS X won't see Windows 7 in network (and vice versa)

  I've enabled SMB sharing in OS X Lion and have added folders to share, it says 'Windows Sharing: On' with a green circle next to it (from the sharing window) and that to access the volume I will need to to go to \\192.168.0.17. It also says that the OS X should be visible as 'macbook' in the network. Both my WIndows 7 and OS X are connected to the same network, yet when I try to go to \\192.168.0.17 or from the Mac try to go to my Windows system (smb://192.168.0.6) the two OSs don't see each other. • Download a file via HTTP from a script in Windows

  I want a way to download a file via HTTP given its URL (similar to how wget works). I've seen the answers to this question, but I have two changes to the requirements: I'd like it to run on Windows 7 or later (though if it works on Windows XP, that's a bonus). I need to be able to do this on a stock machine with nothing but the script, which should be text that could be easily entered on a keyboard or copy/pasted. The shorter, the better. So, essentially, I'd like a .cmd (batch) script, VBScript, or Powershell script that can accomplish the download. It could use COM or invoke IE, but it needs to run without any input, and should behave well when invoked without a display (such as through a telnet session).

• Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). However this method seems to give you odd permissions, like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/15y82v4.png Hence I wondered if anyone knows what the best method is to restore files and folders after a clean install. N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk). • Excel scatter chart with multiple date ranges

  I have multiple blocks of time series data on an Excel sheet, with each block having its own set of dates. For example, I might have dates in column A, values in column B, and then dates in column D and values in column E. The values in B go with the dates in A, and the values in E go with the dates in D. The dates in A and D may not be the same. I would like to create a scatter chart with a time category axis that is the union of my two input date ranges in columns A and D. If I select all the data and then go insert chart (in Excel 2010), Excel treats only column A as the X axis, and looks at D as just another set of values. I can get Excel to do what I want by first just charting columns A and B, then selecting D and E and copy-pasting onto the chart. However, I would like to avoid this two-step procedure if possible.

• Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

  I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of? • usb vs firewire for connecting two RAID 0 disks

  I have a 2TB and a 4TB RAID 0 external drives (both have two physical hard drives in them). Both have a FW800, FW400, and USB port. My MacBook Pro has one FW800 port and two USB ports. I want to copy data from the 4TB drive to the 2TB drive. Is it better to A - connect both directly to the laptop, one with USB and one with FW800 or B - connect the 4TB drive to laptop with FW800 and the 2TB drive to the 4TB drive using a FW400 cable?
