I remember years ago being able to download and install the forums software used on the asp.net site. I am not able to find it now, does anyone know if this is still available?
In Linux is there any way to compute the differences between two binaries (i.e., two executables)?
Let me be more specific: I want to know how to compute the delta (delta difference) between two versions of an executable or application or software in Linux. For example if I have to download and install only the updated part (the delta difference between the latest version and the old version) of an existing application or binary how do I do that in Linux.
One particular user is getting an exception when connecting an application I created to a third party app using COM. The connection fails with the following error:
Source: mscorlib
Message: Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040202
This software works fine for other users.
Any ideas what could be going on?
The error occurs just before the app adds some event handlers to some of the COM objects from the third party app. It is able to successfully instantiate the objects, though.
I read blogs and listen to podcasts, and I own many of the "classic" programming books. For the money, what kind of printed material would you say is the most valuable to keep current in software engineering -- books, or magazines from professional organizations such as ACM and IEEE? Which organization has the best periodicals?
Hello,
I am Patrick Niedzielski, a programmer for the Free Software 3D adventure game Humm and Strumm. I'm working on a minimal Unicode character class in C++. I currently have an array of four bytes representing a UTF-8 sequence.
On GNU/Linux, I can just convert to UTF-32 with iconv(), but on Windows, I cannot do this. Is it possible to convert the array to a single code point?
Thanks,
Patrick
For the life of me, I can't install the JDK on Windows Vista. I keep getting the error, "This Software Has Already Been Installed on Your Computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" Problem is, it's evidently not on my computer, since I can't a) run Eclipse - I get "Could Not Find Java SE Runtime Environment" or b) Find any reference to Java from the command line when typing java -version - I get "Error opening registry key 'Registry/JavaSoft/Java Runtime Environment." Any ideas?
My team uses SVN for our software platform, and we create tags periodically to help keep module versions straight. Best practice, as I understand it, is not to modify a tag once it has been created. However, it seems that sometimes the temptation is too great and a modification is made to one of the tags.
Is there a way to prevent these kinds of checkins, or at least make them a complete pain so that we can discourage them automatically?
Thanks,
Joe
Hi,
I have an XML layout which contains a TableLayout with an unknown number of TableRows...
The number of Rows will be established durin runtime, what I do know though is that I want two columns...
So I have a couple of questions regarding this :
- is there a way to set the whole TableLayout to have 2 columns ?
- is there a way programmatically to give an id to the (during runtime) created TableRows which will be placed within the TableLayout, so I can reference them later on from other parts of the software ?
I'd like to know how the key event is handled in Android platform.
From 'when user type key 'a' on software keyboard',
To 'view draw the character 'a' on itself'.
Probably, the key event is generated by IME,
And it will be sent to parent view,
Finally, view(such as EditText) displays chracters.
Please somebody explains about these entire key event handling process.
Hi,
We have this software which loads various bits of data from files that are written using XMLEncode (serialization using XML). We want to migrate from that to our own proprietary file format (can be XML based). Is there a automated way to achieve this initial conversion, without having to perform a deserialization, and then write those objects out in the new format?
XMLEncode format --> New proprietary file format
Thanks!
We have 100s of websites which were developed in asp, .net and java... and we are paying lot of money for an external agency to do a penetration testing for our sites to check for security loop holes.
Are there any (good) software (paid or free) to do this?
or.. are there any tehnical articles which can help me develop this tool.
I just sat in on a seminar about developing apps for the iPhone. The speaker told me that there is NOTHING available for writing unit tests or functional tests for your iPhone software.
Is this true? Is there really no testing story for the iPhone as of now?
I am using InstallShield 2008 premium edition. I created one basicMSI project only to target x64 platforms. I changed summary property to "x64".
But this installer is writing registry entries in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\CompanyName\ProductName" .
I am using both installshield script and vc++ DLL for custom actions.
Why x64 installer is using WOW64 registry ?
I am an amateur programmer. When I publish an app from Visual Studio Express, I have no option to make the package install for "All users of this computer". Is this possible to do from Visual Studio Express? If so then where is the option? If not, do I need to use the full version of VS or do I need some other package authoring software?
Hi,
what is programmer job or tasks?
is it only programming, or it includes software testing,windows installer, network management, helpdesk, documentation???
AS I am a graduate developer, I feel like I am doing everything, from upgrading hardware, installing antivirus, ...everything....

I've searched around for different challenge sites, and most of them seem to be geared towards difficulty in problem solving logically, rather than trying to use your language of choice to do something you haven't used it for. Their center is around mathematics rather than function design.
Some kind of point system for correctly solving challenges, or solving them the most efficient/smallest would be neat as well.

On my brand new Windows 7 machine, I downloaded Eclipse (Galileo) and several Eclipse plugins (Android's ADT plugin, Subclipse, etc.)
After rebooting, neither of these plugins are showing up in the IDE (nothing in the preferences, menus, etc.) but if I click "Installation Details" in the 'About Eclipse' popup, I see all of the plugins listed as Installed Software. (ex. Android DDMS 0.9.5, Subclipse 1.6.5, etc.)
How do I get my plugins to work?
Hi,
I have created an MSI package which when finishes runs an exe.
<Package InstallerVersion="200" Compressed="yes" />
<Media Id="1" Cabinet="media1.cab" EmbedCab="yes" />
<Directory Id="TARGETDIR" Name="SourceDir">
<Directory Id="ProgramFilesFolder">
<Directory Id="INSTALLLOCATION" Name="Installer Example">
<Component Id="VSTOR30.EXE" Guid="4fb0aee7-ec5b-4179-8938-a2be4df8ca0e">
<File Id="VSTOR30.EXE" Source="C:\Projects\InstallationTarget\ExampleInstaller\VSTOR30.EXE" KeyPath="yes" Checksum="yes" />
</Component>
</Directory>
</Directory>
</Directory>
<Feature Id="ProductFeature" Title="Installation Target" Level="1">
<ComponentRef Id="VSTOR30.EXE" />
</Feature>
<InstallExecuteSequence>
<Custom Action="RunEXE" After="InstallFinalize">NOT Installed</Custom>
</InstallExecuteSequence>
<CustomAction Id="RunEXE" FileKey="VSTOR30.EXE"
ExeCommand="[#VSTOR30.EXE]"
Execute="immediate"
Return="asyncNoWait">
</CustomAction>
<UI />
The MSI installs but the EXE is not run. I am calling it after Install Finalize and checking the install sequence in ORCA shows that it is being called at the correct time. I need deploy this through group policy software installation which uses a silent install without inputs. If i use a custom UI and run the EXE in the exit dialog
<UI>
<UIRef Id="WixUI_Minimal" />
<Publish Dialog="ExitDialog"
Control="Finish"
Event="DoAction"
Value="LaunchApplication">WIXUI_EXITDIALOGOPTIONALCHECKBOX = 1 and NOT Installed</Publish>
</UI>
<Property Id="WIXUI_EXITDIALOGOPTIONALCHECKBOXTEXT" Value="RunEXE" />
<!-- Step 3: Include the custom action -->
<Property Id="WixShellExecTarget" Value="[#VSTOR30.exe]" />
<CustomAction Id="RunEXE"
BinaryKey="WixCA"
DllEntry="WixShellExec"
Impersonate="yes" />
Then i can install the software after the msi has finished running, however when putting this group policy the EXE doesn't install.
Is there anything i am missing?
Chris
Hello,
Is there any SQL editor that supports syntax highlighting, automatic code formatting and code folding? I found this, but it's an Eclipse plugin (I'm a NetBeans user), and cannot automatically format code, which is the most important feature I'm after.
Autocompletion is not important, nor is the possibility of running the code (like the SQL editor in NetBeans).
Edit: I'm sorry for not specifying, I'm looking for Linux or even web-based software.
Hi all,
Is it possible to simulate a USB drive with software only? I mean, for example, to expose a local memory space to the OS so the device manager will recognize it as a USB device.
I'm not familiar with hardware implementation, but I'm sure that it is possible somehow to emulate the USB protocol.
I began with this book - USB Design By Example.
Can anyone please give me additional references to begin with?
Thank in advance!
Hi there.
I need to write a simple program that records all the input from parallel port into a file. Data flows from industrial machine, setup is fairly simple, but I can't find any good open source examples on parallel port reading for Windows.
Do you know a software that does this (and lets me learn how to do it myself), or is there any guideline for parallel port programming on XP?
Thanks.
I've heard for instance that merging branches with git or mercurial is easier than with svn.
Reading last Joel on software blog entry, I didn't get it exactly why. Could you provide a concrete exemple where merging with git/mercurial lead to less merge conflicts compared to svn please?
Hello World I am creating a financial software working on a touch panel machine. I have created a Keyboard control for User Input. I want to open start menu on my keyboard's Window button click. Please tell me hows that possible... Its very urgent
I need to open a PDF in flash player 10. The swf will not be running in a browser and there will not be an adobe reader program on the system. I need to know if its possible to open a PDF without converting it in any way, in the flash player. I've searched google for countless hours and nothing has come up, only conversion software and code to open it in a browser.
Thanks,
Jordan
