• When will java change to 64bit addressing and how can we get there faster?

  Having to work with large files now, I would like to know when the java libraries will start switching to long for indexing in their methods. From Inputstreams read(byte[] b, int off, int len) - funnily there is long skip(long) also - to MappedByteBuffer to the basic indexing of arrays and lists, everything is adressed as int. Is there an official plan for enhancment of the libraries? Do initiatives exist to pressure oracle into enhancing the libraries, if there is no official plan yet?

• Should one comment differently in functional languages

  I'm just getting started with functional programming and I'm wondering the correct way to comment my code. It seems a little redundant to comment a short function as the names and signature already should tell you everything you need to know. Commenting larger functions also seems a little redundant since they are generally comprised of smaller self-descriptive functions. What is the correct way to comment a functional program? Should I use the same approach as in iterative programming?

• bought computer with ubuntu program messed up

  i recently got a dell inspiron B130 with an ubuntu prgm on it and the main users desktop is scattered allover the place , files everywhere but not in folders,how do i fix this? i am new working with this operating system ,used to windows versions. if i go into a guest profile the desktop is perfectly fine and everything works but i cannot make the system fix itself or don't really know where to start help??????? i have the user name and password and can get to terminal screen , but not sure how to remove and add myself to admin use

• Ubuntu 12.04 no network connection

  I own a HP probook 4530s. I installed ubuntu 12.04 along side my windows 7 professional OS. While in window 7 everything works properly in terms of wire and wireless connection. On Ubuntu 12.04 my wired connection doesn't work at all and wireless connection works only when I check off enable wireless then recheck enable wireless. When I recheck enable wireless, the wireless connection only works for about 30 seconds then it goes offline again.

• Pulling changes from master to my work branch?

  There's two of us working on something. We're using this branch structure master dev-A dev-B We both work on separate branches (dev-A,B) and whenever we're done - we promote our changes to master. But the drawback of this is we can't get changes the other developer makes. Everything exists in the master tree - but we can't get the latest updates the other developer made. Is there a way to resolve this or should we change our branch structure (per feature?)?

• How to make Guake start by starup?

  I'm looking for help, because i had to install Ubuntu one more time and I was always using Guake Terminal. In fact I don't know how, but it was always starting when the desktop appeared and I only clicked F12 and did everything I had to. But now it doesn't start automatically.   I have an HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower from 2006: 80GB (3.5”) SATA 3.0GB/s with NCQ and Smart IV Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 I can install Ubuntu on it from a USB stick and everything seems to work fine, but when I finish and reboot the pc, grub will be shown but When I continue I get just a black screen with a blinking cursor I tried Linux Mint and OpenSuse as well but it seems there is something forbidden in the Bios. Installing Windows 8 works fine.

• Screen will not load in 11.04 alpha 3

  After updating from 10.10, there were no problems everything updated fine. I restarted the computer and selected Ubuntu from the boot menu but nothing came. it only shows a a black screen and it allows me to type. I have a feeling that this might be to do with the graphics driver, but how would i get a driver if nothing shows? I have ati radeon 5450 which runs with Catalyst Control Center on Windows. How can fix this?

  I try to suspend my server using dbus and UPower. The server runs Ubuntu LucidLynx 64bit. While everything works fine if I am sitting directly at the machine, it won't work via ssh. If I connect to the server via ssh and try to suspend the machine using dbus and upower, it gives back dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.UPower.GeneralError: not authorized Could anyone please tell me how to configure dbus in order to allow ssh-users to suspend the machine?

I want to install windows form the USB stick on my laptop but when ii try to restart the laptop to get acces to Bios i cant seem to find the command for it, its like it skips everything and just says ubuntu and then takes me to the login screen. • Depth buffer values reset on change shader?

  I have 2 different shaders, and when I change the shader (glUseProgram), it seems that the depth information is lost, because everything drawn with the 2nd shader appears completely on top of anything drawn by the first shader. If I switch the order of shader use/drawing, then it's the same (the last drawn object always appears on top of the first drawn object if there is a shader change between the 2 objects, even if the last drawn object is further away)

  Plenty of exciting trends in the industry today: Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, etc. The first two are amazing of course, but for me, it's mobile, mobile and... MOBILE.   Why? Think back to the mozilla browser (Marc Andreessen's mozilla, not today's mozilla.org), Netscape and the nascent beginnings of the World Wide Web. Amazing times. Companies were just starting to set up their home pages, basic HTML, hyperlinks, images, ooooh, aaaah.  Yahoo! was *the* search engine back then. :-\   Anywhoo, I would pose that mobile today, we are in a similar junction. Sure, there's millions of apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play, but within the enterprise, it's just getting started. I'm talking about going beyond the simple, tactical apps such as calendaring, contacts or directory service lookup. And while mobile first a common mantra, I'm referring to mobile plus which includes and looks upon the whole enterprise holistically and adds new parameters, such as your GPS location, perhaps even your vital signs. (Apple's health kit?)  Everything is going mobile. Everything connected. But with the enterprise - scalability, security, integration, app management, user management, etc. Amazing times ahead. Ok, got that off my mind. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - Going Mobile!  If you're coming to the big dance, I've highlighted some key mobile sessions below. And if you see me around, and there's a bar within reach, high five me for a beer. • Tagging gone from Nautilus, GAJ, tracker

  I had installed Gnome Activity Journal, Zeitgeist and Tracker but borked the install by mixing the PPAs with the universe repos. I removed all the packages, did apt-get remove --purge, then did a locate to manually rm everything else. Then I reinstalled from the PPAs properly. Now I can't tag files anymore, either in Nautilus or GAJ. What packages are involved in tagging? What else might I be missing?
