    We're seeing strange behavior when running two versions of a query on SQL Server 2005: version A: SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = 1234 ORDER BY name ASC version B: DECLARE @Id AS INT; SET @Id = 1234; SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @Id ORDER BY name ASC Both queries return 1000 rows; version A takes on average 15s; version B on average takes 4s. Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL? If we invoke this query via named parameters using NHibernate, we see the following query via SQL Server profiler: EXEC sp_executesql N'SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @id ORDER BY name ASC', N'@id INT', @id=1234; ...and this tends to perform as badly as version A.   • Setting up a network e-mail server

    Hello, My boss just asked me to buy a new server for our office network. I know next to nothing about servers and networking, so I need someone to point me in the right direction. He said he wants this to be our e-mail server with a network login. I have no idea how to set up an e-mail server, especially one that sends/receives e-mail using our domain name. We use a terrible piece of order/inventory software called Mail Order Manager (MOM). Our computers currently connect to the MOM database through a networked drive. My boss would like to move away from this peer-to-peer MOM setup. The software publisher offers a SQL version of MOM, but it's way overpriced. Is there a better way to connect to these databases without using the SQL version? Finally, the server needs to be running Windows. Does this question make sense, is it possible, and can someone help me get started? Thanks!

  • How to check if a Webcam is broken?

    I just bought an Acer Aspire 3830TG, it comes with an integrated 1.3M HD Webcam. Before buying it i tried with a bootable Lubuntu usb stick, everything worked well except for the webcam, which i thought I had to tweak. The thing is that it seems the camera should work with no problems in ubuntu. The driver is detected, I try dmesg | grep uvcvideo and the output is [ 12.226174] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device 1.3M HD WebCam (058f:b002) [ 12.245553] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo I've also tried using different software (guvcview is black when camera output is MJPG and turns to funny colors when YU12 or YV12, cheese is always black, camorama is always with funny colors...). I should have checked that it was working properly with the default os (windows) but now it's too late for that. I even booted with a official Ubuntu Quantal distro from the usb pen, and the results are the same. so, my question is: is there any way to check that the camera is righmt or broken? So, if it's broken, at least i can go to the shop, show them that it's really broken and get an external webcam for free, or st like that. cheers. UPDATE 1 Thanks, jrp.     I have about 160 SSIS packages that I'm trying to upgrade from 2005 to 2008. When I run SSISUpgrade.exe on them, I get the following error messages on many of the packages: Error 0xc0209303: ...: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDB_NOPROVIDER_64BIT_ERROR. The requested OLE DB provider MICROSOFT.JET.OLEDB.4.0 is not registered -- perhaps no 64-bit provider is available. enter code here`Error code: 0x00000000. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Service Components" Hresult: 0x80040154 Description: "Class not registered". This fellow says that to fix this I need to set the run64bitruntime debugging property to False. However each of these packages exists outside of a project file. How can I set this property without having a project file?

    The current DB or our project has crossed over 40 GB this month and on an average it is growing monthly by around 3 GB. Now all the tables are best normalized and proper indexing has been used. But still as the size is growing it is taking more time to fire even basic queries like 'select count(1) from table'. So can u share some more points that will help in this front. Database is Sql Server 2005. Further if we implement Partitioning wouldn't it create a overhead ? Thanks in advance.

  • SQL Server 2005: When clicking "Add" database I keep getting 'verify that the path or file exists'

    When I right click on "databases" in Sql Server 2005 Management Studio and then Attach... Add I get the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\ Projects\Path\To\MDF\And\LDF\Files\ cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. The answer is easy - the MDF and LDF files where removed when Nant (by way of my dev machine) issued a drop command. But, after replacing the MDF and LDF files, I want to reattach the database but the above error keeps coming up when I select "Add". Also, I have already "unattached" the database in question and it no longer appears on the left under "databases". I have tried to replace a copy of the MDF and LDF files in the folder being referenced and that didn't work. Any ideas as to how to gracefully get rid of this error?

    Hi I heard about doing staging tables and I am wondering how you actually do it. I want to do a sqlbulk copy into a staging table. Then then update the real table. I heard in mssql 2008 that you can use something called merge but I am using ms sql 2005 so I heard I have to use a update inner join? I am not sure how that would look like(I am guessing best way would be to write it in SP). Also the staging table needs to be able to handle concurrent updates. I was thinking of putting another column in the staged as GUID so that way I know which records belong to which group and when it is time to delete the records from the staged table I can just use that.     Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise DB and using the new Merge statement (when source and target are both SQL Server 2008 DB tables), and it works well. I have another database table which is hosted in SQL Server 2005 Enterprise DB. I want to know whether Merge statement could using one table of SQL Server 2008 as source, and another tableof SQL Server 2005 as target?   • How to sysprep SQL Server Express?

    We plan to deploy Hyper-V VHD with Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 Express installed to multiple hosts. From my understanding, the correct way to do this is to install SQL Server in prepartion mode, sysprep Windows, then complete SQL Server installation when the VHD is deployed. I mostly followed the process in this blog post: http://sethusrinivasan.com/category/sysprep/ However, after the VHD is deployed, I'm unable to complete the SQL Server installation. It keeps saying "Upgrade matrix is incorrect". It seems that it's trying to upgrade itself to Enterprise edition (I was asked for product key during install, but I skipped it). Could anyone share their experience in deploying VHDs with SQL Server (we're fine with either SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012)? I think the source of my issue is because I can't select "Express Edition" when entering the product key at the completion stage, so the installation is trying to do an upgrade to Enterprise Edition. I have no idea why the drop down list is empty.

  • Can't connect to Sql Server 2008 named instance

    I just installed Sql 2008 Express on a new server running Windows Server 2008. I know Sql is working properly, because I can connect to the db fine locally, on the server. I cannot connect to it from a client machine though, neither by IP address nor by machine name (iporname\instance). I know I have the correct IP address, because I am RDCing into the server to perform all this configuration and setup, and if I ping the server name, it is resolving to the correct IP address as well. On the server, I have set up an inbound firewall exception allowing all traffic on any port on any protocol to sqlservr.exe. In SSMS, in server > Properties > Connections Allow remote connections to this server is enabled. In Sql Server Configuration Manager, TCP/IP is enabled in both the Protocols for <instance> and the Client Protocols sections. I looked in the Windows logs, but don't see anything about connections being denied or dropped. As far as I can see, I have everything set right, but cannot connect from a client machine. The client CAN connect to other Sql 2008 Express servers okay, so I know the client configuration is correct. Any ideas where else I can look for info of what/where/how this connection is dropping, greatly apprecaited! The error being returned by the client is: **TITLE: Connect to Server** Cannot connect to [MY.IP.ADD.RSS]\[MYINSTNAME]. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

    I need help installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition.I really need to remove the current SQL Server 2005.installation that is no longer on my Add/Remove software list but yet still installed on the machine. I tried to uninstall SQL Server Express / Developer Edition but it only removed it from my Add/Remove software list. It returned immediately but did NOT actually remove the product. (I'm now in a bad state.) i tried to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and its says I'm blocked as all components are already installed - but they are not. How can I remove all instance of previous one and install clean Enterprise edition on my server Thanks
