  • Can a web server and XBMC HTPC co exist happily?

    - by Mild Fuzz
I have a machine that is currently dedicated to running my home theatre. It is way more powerful than it needs to be, and spec wise would have no problem running both a few websites and an HTPC What I wanted to know is that is this was a reasonable thing to expect of a single machine? 90% of the time, all it's power would be just for the web server ( and the odd torrent) Currently it's running Windows, but I am pretty sure I will have to turn it into a Linux box Will I run into any problems? Is there anything I need to know before I start? Any prerequisites? The webserver will be required to run Ruby on Rails sites mainly, but might be called upon to run PHP for Wordpress also.

  • AJAX CascadingDropDown ViewState Problem

    - by Steven
Question: How do I maintain both the contents (from queries) and selected value of both dropdowns after postback? Source Code: Download my source code from this link (link now works). Just add a reference to your AjaxControlToolkit User Action: Select a value from each dropdown. Click Submit. After Postback: StatesDrop: (Selected value), CitiesDrop "Select a City" Before and after: I believe that when the first dropdown gets its selected value, the second dropdown refreshes and therefore loses its selected value. C# answers also welcome. • What WYSIWYG software can I use to create a web page?

    - by Roman
I always made web pages by writing HTML code but now I would like to try to use some WYSIWYG approach. Can anybody recommend me a program which I can use for that? I mean a program in which you can move buttons, tables, pictures by mouse. You can change size and shape by mouse. You can use nice templates for "block of text", buttons, background and so on. I am using Windows 7. May be I already have something pre-installed?

  • Web App Server hardware question. Which configuration?

    - by JBeckton
I am pricing some new servers and I am not sure which configuration to get. The server will be running some web applications for our company. Some of them are ASP.Net sites and some are ColdFusion. The OS will be Win Server 2008 Web or Standard Edition. Do I need 2 processors or will a single quad core handle it? Xeon multi core Hyperthreading or non Hyperthreading? I am going 64bit so I can go higher than 4 Gigs of Ram. I am shopping at Dell and there are so many options, i do not want to get too much hardware and not use half of it because that would be a waste of money and I do not want to get too little and have to ask for more money to upgrade it later.

  • What is your Wordpress 2.9 theme development workflow after getting PSD from client?

    - by metal-gear-solid

I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows. and my main browser is FF 3.6. I know some extensions of dreamweaver but those are not updated with wordpress versions. After making XHTML CSS Version of PSD how to incorporate Wordpress 2.9 Tags in it? Has anyone tried this tool http://www.themedreamer.com/ is this really helpful?

  • How do I share a Hibernate SessionFactory across web applications?

    - by Jer
I have two web applications that are running on a single Tomcat server and are connected to the same database with Hibernate. I am concerned that having two SessionFactory instances running around might cause some issues. Also, since both web applications share much of the same application logic, I thought it would be a good idea to centralize as much as I could. And since I use Spring for DI and Hibernate configuration it would make sense to have a single ApplicationContext as well. How would I go about doing something like this? Do I need to deploy a headless WAR that creates an ApplicationContext and thus a SessionFactory and allow each application access to it? Is this even a good idea?

  • Combine two content encodings sections in a single page

    - by AmirGl
I developed a web application that allows users to modify existing web pages. When a user type a url of an existing web page, I read the content of this page and using an ajax call, i display the content in a div inside my web application. Now my problem is that often the content encoding of the existing web page is different than my web app (I use utf-8) Is there a way to load content using an ajax call with different content encoding than the one of the main page? Thanks, Amir

  • What's the best general programming book to review basic development concepts?

    - by Charles S.
I'm looking for for a programming book that reviews basic concepts like implementing linked lists, stacks, queues, hash tables, tree traversals, search algorithms, etc. etc. Basically, I'm looking for a review of everything I learned in college but have forgotten. I prefer something written in the last few years that includes at least a decent amount of code in object-oriented languages. This is to study for job interview questions but I already have the "solving interview questions" books. I'm looking for something with a little more depth and explanation. Any good recommendations?

  • How to configure IIS for SVG and web testing with Visual Studio?

    - by macias
Let's say I have a simple web page with svg image in it: <img src="foobar.svg" alt="not working" /> If I make this page as static html page and view it directly svg is displayed. If I type the address of this svg -- it is displayed. But when I make this as .aspx page and launch it dynamically from Visual Studio I get alt text. If I type the address of this svg (from localhost, not as a local file) -- browser tries to download it instead of displaying. I already defined mime type in IIS (for entire server -- "image/svg+xml") and restarted IIS. Same effect as before. Question: what should I do more? Update WireShark won't work (it is in documentation), I tried also RawCap, but it cannot trace my connection (odd), luckily Fiddler worked: From client: GET http://127.0.0.1:1731/svg/document_edit.svg HTTP/1.1 Host: 127.0.0.1:1731 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:10.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0.1 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-us,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: keep-alive Answer from server: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: ASP.NET Development Server/10.0.0.0 Date: Thu, 16 Feb 2012 11:14:38 GMT X-AspNet-Version: 4.0.30319 Cache-Control: private Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Length: 87924 Connection: Close <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> <!-- Created with Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) --> <svg xmlns: *** FIDDLER: RawDisplay truncated at 128 characters. What is the usefulness of W3C's Semantic Data Extractor? http://www.w3.org/2003/12/semantic-extractor.html This tool, geared by an XSLT stylesheet, tries to extract some information from a HTML semantic rich document. It only uses information available through a good usage of the semantics defined in HTML. The aim is to show that providing a semantically rich HTML gives much more value to your code: using a semantically rich HTML code allows a better use of CSS, makes your HTML intelligible to a wider range of user agents (especially search engines bots). As an aside, it can give clues to user agents developers on some hooks that could be interesting to add in their product. After checking validation for CSS and HTML. Should i go for Semantic Data Extractor tool. What it does. and how it can improved our coding.? Is anyone using it? And i check some site randomly with but with most of sites it gives error Using org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser Exception net.sf.saxon.trans.XPathException: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The element type "input" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "`</input>`". org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The element type "input" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "`</input>`". Is it possible to get pass every site with this tool? on one site i got this error No top-level heading (h1) found, no outline extracted. Is it necessary to have at least a H1 in any webpage?

  • What's the easiest/fast way to get my website up and running on the web?

    - by ggfan
This is probably a really really beginner's question, but I would like to know what's the fastest way to get my site on the web so that people can start using it. I'm learning everything about programming out of books and at home so I don't have much experience. --Before I go to like godaddy.com or such site to get a domain name, is there any free sites that would allow me to upload my site so users can use it? I have html, css, php, mysql, javascipt in my scripts so I don't think many sites allow free uploads with such languages. --If I can't find a free site, is there any good places to get a domain name and web hosting that supports most languages at a low price? (doesn't have to be professional hosting because I am still a beginner) --If I go to say godaddy.com and get their webhosting and domain name, would I be allowed to run php, mysql, python, java on it? (I looked at some hosting sites and most only allow php/mysql)

  • What is a great tool for remote pair development?

    - by Haim Bender
I'm looking for something like VNC, but with some extra features: The server should send only the part of the screen the client is looking at. It would be great if we could have 2 mice on the client's desktop. Or at least if the client could point to somthing without interrupting the server's mouse. A shared whiteboard would be great. Some extra notes: My friend lives far away, and we are using WinXP.

  • Have you been in cases where TDD increased development time?

    - by BillyONeal
Hello everyone :) I was reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2512504/tdd-how-to-start-really-thinking-tdd and I noticed many of the answers indicate that tests + application should take less time than just writing the application. In my experience, this is not true. My problem though is that some 90% of the code I write has a TON of operating system calls. The time spent to actually mock these up takes much longer than just writing the code in the first place. Sometimes 4 or 5 times as long to write the test as to write the actual code. I'm curious if there are other developers in this kind of a scenario.

  • Deploy custom web service to sharepoint server(2007/2010)?

    - by leif
According to MSDN, for deploying custom web service, we need to create *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files, and put them with .asmx together under _vti_bin folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\isapi). And put the dll under bin folder of the root of sharepoint virtual directory. It works correctly for me. However, i also found that if i put .asmx file under the root virtual directory without creating those *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files. It can work as well and much easier than the above way. So i'm wondering what's the potential issues in this way?
