• Application Scope v's Static - Not Quite the same

  An interesting question came up today which, innocent as it sounded, needed a second or two to consider. What's the difference between storing say a Map of reference information as a Static as opposed to storing the same map as an application scoped variable in JSF?  From the perspective of the web application itself there seems to be no functional difference, in both cases, the information is confined to the current JVM and potentially visible to your app code (note that Application Scope is not magically propagated across a cluster, you would need a separate instance on each VM). To my mind the primary consideration here is a matter of leakage. A static will be (potentially) visible to everything running within the same VM (OK this depends on which class-loader was used but let's keep this simple), and this includes your model code and indeed other web applications running in the same container. An Application Scoped object, in JSF terms, is much more ring-fenced and is only visible to the Web app itself, not other web apps running on the same server and not directly to the business model layer if that is running in the same VM. So given that I'm a big fan of coding applications to say what I mean, then using Application Scope appeals because it explicitly states how I expect the data to be used and a provides a more explicit statement about visibility and indeed dependency as I'd generally explicitly inject it where it is needed.  Alternative viewpoints / thoughts are, as ever, welcomed...

• Naming a class that processes orders

  I'm in the midst of refactoring a project. I've recently read Clean Code, and want to heed some of the advice within, with particular interest in Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). Currently, there's a class called OrderProcessor in the context of a manufacturing product order system. This class is currently performs the following routine every n minutes: check database for newly submitted + unprocessed orders (via a Data Layer class already, phew!) gather all the details of the orders mark them as in-process iterate through each to: perform some integrity checking call a web service on a 3rd party system to place the order check status return value of the web service for success/fail email somebody if web service returns fail constantly log to a text file on each operation or possible fail point I've started by breaking out this class into new classes like: OrderService - poor name. This is the one that wakes up every n minutes OrderGatherer - calls the DL to get the order from the database OrderIterator (? seems too forced or poorly named) - OrderPlacer - calls web service to place the order EmailSender Logger I'm struggling to find good names for each class, and implementing SRP in a reasonable way. How could this class be separated into new class with discrete responsibilities?

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. • TransformXml Task locks config file identified in Source attribute

  As background: the TransformXml MSBuild task is typically invoked in a custom build step to mark up a web.config file with per-environment configuration; its flexible directives offer highly granular control over the insertion, removal, substitution and transformation of existing configuration hierarchies. For those using the TransformXML task (typically in a Web Deployment Project) I raised an issue against Visual Studio 2010, in which the file handle on the input file was not released, meaning that following transformation the source file remained locked. As a result, the best way to transform a file was first to rename it, transform it, and then copy it back, leaving the "locked" file to be freed up later.I just heard today that this has now been resolved in Visual Studio 2012 RTM. That's good news, because Web Config Transformations offer a lot. An intelligent, automated build process will swap in the relevant transform(s), making it much easier to synthesise the Developer and Build server builds. This makes for a simpler and more exemplary build process, and with the tighter coupling comes a correspondingly quicker response to Developmental change.Oh, and don't forget -- it isn't just web.configs you can transform. You can transform app.configs, or indeed any XML file that honours the task's schema and hierarchical rules.

• That Tool is cURLy

  When you just use IE, Firefox or Chrome it can be easy to forget that HTTP is about more then just going to check the latest tech news at Engadget. It is a full and rich protocol, and a great way to experience that richness is the powerful command line utility cURL. cURL has a lot of options, but the syntax starts out simple. You can retrieve the contents of a web page with a simple curl http://blogs.claritycon.com/. The results should be the full text of the web page, tags and all. From there, you can use X to specify the HTTP verb to use, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH, etc and d to specify the payload of a POST or PUT. I have found cURL to be incredibly useful for two scenarios. First, as a good way to test basic web services. Second, while working a bit with CouchDB and another document based database, cURL has helped me learn more about RESTful APIs, including different verbs and response codes. cURL is a mainstay in our environments and programming languages precisely because it is simple, powerful and discoverable. I encourage more .NET developers to take a look, bask on the command line for a while and enjoy the plain text of the web. • Are you ready to take a walk in the clouds?

  Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio).   I was working on a data view web part recently and i had  to filter the data based on dates.Since the data source was web services i couldn't use  the Offset which i blogged about earlier.When using web services to pull data in sharepoint designer you would have to use xpath.So for example this is the soap that populates the rows<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row/>But you would need to add some predicate [] and filter the date nodes.So you can do something like this (marked in red)<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row[ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@ows_Created),1033,'yyyyMMdd') &gt;= ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(substring-after($fd,'#')),1033,'yyyyMMdd')]"/>For the filtering to work you need to have the date formatted  above as yyyyMMdd.One more thing you must have noticed is the $fd variable.This variable is created by me creating a calculated column in the list so something like this [Created]-2So basically that the xpath is doing is get me data only when the Created date  is greater than or equal to the Created date -2 which is 2 date less than the created date.Also not that when using web services in sharepoint designer and try to use the default filtering you won't get to see greater tha or less than in the option list comparison.:(Hope this helps.

• Good links somehow being converted to ones with a PHP redirect (not a virus)

  This has happened to links we put on web pages and in emails. We might put www.oursite.org/work/ but when I view source it shows up as webmail.ourhosting.ca/hwebmail/services/go.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.oursite.org%2F%2work%2F This ends up at the webmail login page for our web host. But only some of the people who click the link get the login page; others go directly to the original page we intended. We don't want it to go to the webmail login page, nobody needs to log in to our web site. This occurs for links to pages on our site, but also to links to other sites that we put in emails or in posts. It seems to be browser independent as well as e-mail client independent as we variously have used Firefox and Chrome as well as MS Outlook and Thunderbird. I've tried to resolve the issue with our webhost but they keep telling me they don't support our browser, or our email client (i.e., they don't understand the issue). At the moment, our only option is to try another web host just to get rid of their login. Any ideas about what's going on?

  I guess this is a SharePoint beginner problem ,however it took me a while to figure out what the problem is and I will blog it to help me to remember. Basically I wrote the following code to grab some list item from my SharePoint subsite http://win-oirj50igics/RestAPI,however I got the error stating that : “<nativehr>0×80070002</nativehr><nativestack></nativestack>There is no Web named / http://win-oirj50igics/RestAPI”. The problem is that OpenWeb(String) method returns the web site that is located at the specified server-relative or site-relative URL. • Remote EJB lookup issue with WebSphere 6.1

  I've seen this question asked before, but I've tried various solutions proposed, to no avail. Essentially, I have two EJB enterprise applications, that need to communicate with one another. The first is a web application, the second is a search server - they are located on different development servers, not in the same node, cell, or JVM, although they are on the same physical box. I'm doing the JNDI lookup via IIOP, and the URL I am using is as follows: iiop://searchserver:2819 In my hosts file, I've set searchserver to 127.0.0.1. The ports for my search server are bound to this hostname too. However, when the web app (that uses Spring btw) attempts to lookup the search EJB, it fails with the following error. This is driving me nuts, surely this kind of comms between the servers should be fairly simple to get working. I've checked the ports and they are correct. I note that the exception says the initial context is H00723Node03Cell/nodes/H00723Node03/servers/server1, name: ejb/com/hmv/dataaccess/ejb/hmvsearch/HMVSearchHome. This is the web apps server NOT the search server. Is this correct? How can I get Spring to use the right context? Can you please help me as to what i am doing wrong. And yes if i send just batchProgressMetricsList.get(0) in MAV it just works fine.

  I currently have my web.xml configured to catch 404s and send them to my spring controller which will perform a search given the original URL request. The problem lies in resolving the view's path to the /WEB-INF/jsp/ directory. Using a logger in my JBoss setup, I can see that when I test this search controller by going to a non-existent page, the following occurs: Server can't find the request Request is sent to 404 error page (in this case my search controller) Search controller performs search Search controller returns view name (for this illustration, we'll assume test.jsp is returned) Based off of server logger, I can see that org.springframework.web.servlet.view.JstlView is initialized once my search controller returns the view name (so I can assume it is being picked up correctly by the InternalResourceViewResolver) Server attempts to return content to browser resulting in a 404! A couple things confuse me about this: I'm not 100% sure why this isn't resolving when test.jsp clearly exists under the /WEB-INF/jsp/ directory. Even if there was some other problem, why would this result in a 404? Shouldn't a 404 error page that results in another 404 theoretically create an infinite loop? Thanks for any help or pointers! • Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.
