• Running Mac OSX 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

  Somehow my home directory on my mac machine has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and mac has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

• php APC uptime problem

  I am on LAMP with Alternative PHP Cache. It worked fine until yesterday when I updated the website and changed a few mySQL queries (I don't see the how it would affect APC opcode cache) Today I see that the load has increased on the server and I see in Alternative PHP Cache, that the uptime of APC is somewhere around 15 minutes then it gets restarted. At this point the APC cache is only about 20% full of the available 30Mb. Using for opcode cache only. During this 15 minutes the cache works fine (99,8% cache hits). After this unwanted restart the APC cache is empty. Why is it restarting? Where can I find the logs for it? Thanks, Hamlet

  Inline images is a technique that, instead of referring to an external URL, includes all of the image’s content in the HTML itself, in the form of a Base64-encoded string. It avoids a second browser request, at the cost of making the HTML page slightly heavier and not using cache. Not all browsers support it, but current versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome do.   Do you need to build a demo for a customer? Why not to use Fusion Order Demo (FOD) and modify it to do some extra things. Great idea, let me install it on one of my Linux servers I said "Turns out there are a few gotchas, so here is how I installed it on a Linux server with JDeveloper on my Windows desktop." Task 1: Install Oracle JDeveloper Studio I already had JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 with SOA extensions installed so this was easy. Task 2: Install the Fusion Order Demo Application First thing to do is to obtain the latest version of the demo from OTN, I obtained the R1 PS5 release. Gotcha #1 – my winzip wouldn’t unzip the file, I had to use 7-Zip. Task 3: Install Oracle SOA Suite On the domain modify the setDomainEnv script by adding “-Djps.app.credential.overwrite.allowed=true” to JAVA_PROPERTIES and restarting the Admin Server. Also set the JAVA_HOME variable and add Ant to the path. I created a domain with separate SOA and BAM servers and also set up the Node Manager to make it easier to stop and start components. • How to host customer developed code server side

  I'm developing a multi-tenant web application, most likely using ASP.NET MVC5 and Web API. I have used business applications in the past where it was possible to upload custom DLL's or paste in custom code to a GUI to have custom functions run server side. These applications were self hosted and single-tenant though so the customer developed bits didn't impact other clients. I want to host the multi-tenant web application myself and allow customers to upload custom code that will run server side. This could be for things like custom web services that client side JavaScript could interact with, or it could be for automation steps that they want triggered server side asynchronously when a user takes a particular action. Additionally, I want to expose an API that allows customers' code to interact with data specific to the web application itself. Client code may need to be "wrapped" so that it has access to appropriate references - to our custom API and maybe to a white list of approved libraries. There are several issues to consider - security, performance (infinite loops, otherwise poorly written code, load balancing, etc.), receive compiled DLL's or require raw code, etc. Is there an established pattern for this sort of thing or a sample project anyone can point to? Or any general recommendations?

• How to get tilemap transparency color working with TiledLib's Demo implementation?

  So the problem I'm having is that when using Nick Gravelyn's tiledlib pipeline for reading and drawing tmx maps in XNA, the transparency color I set in Tiled's editor will work in the editor, but when I draw it the color that's supposed to become transparent still draws. The closest things to a solution that I've found are - 1) Change my sprite batch's BlendState to NonPremultiplied (found this in a buried Tweet). 2) Get the pixels that are supposed to be transparent at some point then Set them all to transparent. Solution 1 didn't work for me, and solution 2 seems hacky and not a very good way to approach this particular problem, especially since it looks like the custom pipeline processor reads in the transparent color and sets it to the color key for transparency according to the code, just something is going wrong somewhere. At least that's what it looks like the code is doing. • Running a Check-Disk (Is it dangerous)

  I have a lap top that a friend of mine would like me to fix. It is giving a blue screen on boot up. When I looked up the error message it indicates that I should run a check disk. Is this dangerous? Should I try to off load stuff from the hard drive first? I ask because I had a hard drive of my own that when I ran check disk it wiped a bunch of "bad sectors" and I lost most of the info on it (but it had been going bad). Opinions?

In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. • Keep-Alive header not sent from Tomcat 5.5 http connector?

  Hi, We're currently using a hardware load balancer, which then goes to Apache and that then goes to Tomcat 5.5 via the AJP connector. We've decided to dump apache for various reasons - In our current system it doesnt provide any advantage. However when I look at the headers sent when we do this, the "Keep-Alive: timeout=15 max=96" header doesnt get sent when you use the tomcat http connector Interestingly, i can find no documentiation on "keepalivetimeout" for tomcat5.5, but i can for tomcat6. But neither can i find evidence that tomcat5.5 doesnt support this setting. here's my connector: <Connector port="8090" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192" maxThreads="400" minSpareThreads="150" maxSpareThreads="300" enableLookups="false" connectionTimeout="2" maxKeepAliveRequests="400" disableUploadTimeout="true" /> So; Is there any way I can specify the keepalive timeout if we use the http connector with tomcat 5.5, and force this header entry to be sent? When I restarted it no network interfaces were available and configured. I tried restarting networking daemon but it just exited with 0 status. So I tried to run one of the interfaces manually, but ifup and ifdown commands simply are not there. No only in PATH, but they disappeared from /sbin. So my question is: how can I recover these network utilities?

• VMware Workstation 7.x error loading operating system help

  Hey all i am using the windows verison of VMware Workstation 7.x and I am getting this error when i start my VM error loading operating system That only started to happen when i tried to load that vmdk file into the program VirtualBox. Prior to this it ran just fine. Ever since then i have been unable to start it in VMware Workstation 7.x... I've already tried to repair the vmdk file but when i do it tells me there are no errors found? I used vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -R "c:\blah\my vm disk.vmdk" Anyone else have any more suggestions i could try? It's a 300+GB VM so i really don't want to lose it!!! Thanks, David

• Can unit tests verify software requirements?

  I have often heard unit tests help programmers build confidence in their software. But is it enough for verifying that software requirements are met? I am losing confidence that software is working just because the unit tests pass. We have experienced some failures in production deployment due to an untested\unverified execution path. These failures are sometimes quite large, impact business operations and often requires an immediate fix. The failure is very rarely traced back to a failing unit test. We have large unit test bodies that have reasonable line coverage but almost all of these focus on individual classes and not on their interactions. Manual testing seems to be ineffective because the software being worked on is typically large with many execution paths and many integration points with other software. It is very painful to manually test all of the functionality and it never seems to flush out all the bugs. Are we doing unit testing wrong when it seems we still are failing to verify the software correctly before deployment? Or do most shops have another layer of automated testing in addition to unit tests?

• How can I use Windows Firewall to only permit the Windows Update service to make an outbound connection?

  I'm trying to tailor my Windows Firewall settings (using the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console) to only permit programs that need to access the Internet with an outbound connection to do so. This works fine for normal applications as I can just allow the program, but services that load in the svchost.exe process are a problem. The only services I actually need to give access to are Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (and even that, I would only like Windows Update to be able to submit jobs to, but that's another issue.) Is there a method to only allow these to be permitted an outbound connection, and not any of the other services loaded in svchost?

  Python has a very neat package called pandas which allows for quick data transformation; tables, aggregation, that sort of thing. A lot of these types of functionality can also be found in the python itertools module. The plyR package in R is also very similar. Usually one woud use this functionality to produce a table which is later visualized with a plot. I am personally very fond of d3, and I would like to allow the user to first indicate what type of data aggregation he wants on the dataset before it is visualized. The visualisation in question involves making a heatmap where the user gets to select the size of the bins of the heatmap beforehand (I want d3 to project this through leaflet). I want to visually select the ideal size of the bins for the heatmap. The way I work now is that I take the dataset, aggregate it with python and then manually load it in d3. This is a process that takes a lot of human effort and I was wondering if the data aggregation can be done through the javascript of the browser. I couldn't find a package for javascript specifically built for data, suggesting (to me) that this is a bad idea and that one should not use javascript for the data handling. Is there a good module/package for javascript to handle data aggregation? Is it a good/bad idea to do the data aggregation in javascript (performance wise)?

  I just set up a 3 node system with ip addresses "192.168.0.101", "192.168.0.102", "192.168.0.103". • Classic ASP on large memory server

  I have a client with a large ASP app that apparently is fairly memory intensive. I’m helping them migrate to new hardware they have running Win2k8 R2. They have 4 physical servers with 32gb of RAM each. I’m making the assumption that ASP apps run as a x32 process. So I see that we have two options: On the application pool enable web gardens. Use the physical servers as VM hosts and split the box into say 4 web servers each. Any thoughts on which path will provide us better performance? I’m just not really sure how ASP will handle a machine with lots of memory, and I’m worried it won’t really be able to address the memory well. (you can ignore all the obvious stuff like increased maintenance of 16 web servers vs 4, or the flexibility virtualization gets us over physical servers, etc)

• net-snmp snptranslate dosnt work for my MIB (snmpget does work)

  I add my own MIB module to net-snmp. I put my Mib txt file under - '/usr/local/share/snmp/mibs' I see that if i change net-snmp files their the change is reflected , so this mibs are loaded correct. It seems that it not load my MIB file from there. • Acer Aspire 3820TG video card driver issue for Windows 8 Pro

  The model for Acer laptop is ATI mobility Radeon 5650. I am using Windows 8 Pro from MSDN. It was working fine until two days ago when Microsoft pushes an update. After the update, my video card stops working and I only see black screen after loading splash screen. I can go in Safe Mode. I tried to install driver from AMD website but it failed with error message "load detection driver failed". Anyone else have the same issue? Any idea how to solve this? I need to go in Win8 for my latest development.

• Good default for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR?

  The XDG Base Directory Specification is a very interesting spec for user directories. It also provides good default values, except for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. Now I am writing a software that needs to create named pipes. It is a per-user client-server framework (there is a FIFO for the server and a FIFO per client). If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not defined, I am currently using a per-user subdirectory in /tmp — but it does not ensure all the specified conditions (viz. the paragraph starting with "The lifetime of the directory MUST be bound to the user being logged in…") Is /tmp/myserver-$USER good enough? Edit I saw elsewhere a few suggestions: . is quite unsatisfactory (at least because it is not an absolute path). I also saw /var/run/user/$USER — not bad, but that directory does not exist (at least on my box running a Debian testing)

• ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 does not work with HTTP preseed?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What is the correct boot parameters for launching such an installation? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct.

• Functional programming and stateful algorithms

  I'm learning functional programming with Haskell. In the meantime I'm studying Automata theory and as the two seem to fit well together I'm writing a small library to play with automata. Here's the problem that made me ask the question. While studying a way to evaluate a state's reachability I got the idea that a simple recursive algorithm would be quite inefficient, because some paths might share some states and I might end up evaluating them more than once. For example, here, evaluating reachability of g from a, I'd have to exclude f both while checking the path through d and c: So my idea is that an algorithm working in parallel on many paths and updating a shared record of excluded states might be great, but that's too much for me. I've seen that in some simple recursion cases one can pass state as an argument, and that's what I have to do here, because I pass forward the list of states I've gone through to avoid loops. But is there a way to pass that list also backwards, like returning it in a tuple together with the boolean result of my canReach function? (although this feels a bit forced) Besides the validity of my example case, what other techniques are available to solve this kind of problems? I feel like these must be common enough that there have to be solutions like what happens with fold* or map. So far, reading learnyouahaskell.com I didn't find any, but consider I haven't touched monads yet. (if interested, I posted my code on codereview)

• Regedit as Current User

  I'm trying to apply a registry fix for an Outlook/O365 issue on a user's account. The issue is that "regedit" is blocked by a domain GPO. I'm able to run "gpedit" using the local admin account. Question : When I run "regedit as the local admin, am I modifying the registry for the local admin user or the domain user who's actually logged onto the workstation? I'm trying to apply the following fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2843677 Also, the path for the above mentioned registry should end in " \Preferences" which is what I'm unable to locate. I'm able to navigate up until \Outlook. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Running Outlook 2010.

• Managing JS and CSS for a static HTML web application

  I'm working on a smallish web application that uses a little bit of static HTML and relies on JavaScript to load the application data as JSON and dynamically create the web page elements from that. First question: Is this a fundamentally bad idea? I'm unclear on how many web sites and web applications completely dispense with server-side generation of HTML. (There are obvious disadvantages of JS-only web apps in the areas of graceful degradation / progressive enhancement and being search engine friendly, but I don't believe that these are an issue for this particular app.) Second question: What's the best way to manage the static HTML, JS, and CSS? For my "development build," I'd like non-minified third-party code, multiple JS and CSS files for easier organization, etc. For the "release build," everything should be minified, concatenated together, etc. If I was doing server-side generation of HTML, it'd be easy to have my web framework generate different development versus release HTML that includes multiple verbose versus concatenated minified code. But given that I'm only doing any static HTML, what's the best way to manage this? (I realize I could hack something together with ERB or Perl, but I'm wondering if there are any standard solutions.)
