• Which faces technology for use with GlassFish 2.1 and NetBeans 6.7?

  I'm running GlassFish 2.1 and using NetBeans 6.7. I'd like to create a web interface to my data using JSF 1.2. Trouble is, I'm not sure which 'faces' technology to learn (that includes some good documentation). JBoss/RichFaces seem pretty good on documentation, but I'm using GlassFish. Any thoughts? The choices appear overwhelming: Tomahawk Tobago Trinidad ICEfaces RCFaces Netadvantage WebGalileoFaces QuipuKit BluePrints Woodstock JBoss RichFaces Ajax4jsf ILOG Oracle ADF G4JSF Simplica Backbase jenia4faces VisualWebPack DynaFaces IBM Impl Dinamica Mojarra PrimeFaces jQuery OpenFaces ZK ExtJS Anybody had any experience with any of the above and found the documentation to be clear to a beginner? Being a JSF/Web beginner, I tried some ICEFaces, Mojarra tutorials and had a go at getting RichFaces working with NBeans and GlassFish, but no luck. Lots of XML complaints. I'm clearly missing some huge chunks of configuration, but I can't find any documentation to help me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated :-)

• Google Translate set default language

  Maybe this has an obvious solution that I'm overlooking, but I can't seem to find the correct parameter to put in to make this happen. Using the Google Translate widget on a site, I need to set the default language that the user sees when entering the site, even though the site is english. function googleTranslateElementInit() { new google.translate.TranslateElement({ pageLanguage: 'en' }, 'google_translate_element'); } I've tried adding: defaultLanguage: 'fr' and tried: targetLanguage: 'fr' I did find some nice jQuery solutions, but didn't want to bypass this if it was an easy fix.   I've built a UserRepository interface to communicate with my LINQ to SQL Data layer, but I'm trying to figure out how to implement validation. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • Visual Studio 2008 Unresponsive When Opening JavaScript Files

  I'm starting a new ASP.NET project that I'm trying to use some jQuery with, but whenever I try to open .js file (blank or containing a few lines of javascript) in Visual Studio, it often hangs; showing the .js filename in a new tab, but the actual text editor window showing whatever was drawn to the screen before opening the .js file. Eventually, after closing and re-opening, it will open in the text editor, but the font is always something like 10pt Arial. Even after changing this in VS options, the next re-launch of Visual Studio yields the same results. Has anyone else experienced hang, unresponsiveness, wonkiness from Visual Studio with JavaScript files?

• What states does my route travel through?

  I've got a page that has a map with a starting and ending location. I run a route between them to get the nifty line showing the route. I'm currently using Bing but have attempted with Google as well. I'd like to know which states this route passes through so I can then overlay those states with specific information. Any suggestions on how to obtain this would be most appreciated. I'm using the AJAX SDK's for both Bing and Google. Handling all the local stuff with js/jquery.

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Passing a web service an unknown number of parameters

  I'm relatively new to utilizing web services. I'm trying to create one that will be accepting data from a ASP.Net form whose input controls are created dynamically at runtime and I don't how many control values will be getting passed. I'm thinking I'll be using jQuery's serialize() on the form to get the data, but what do I have the web service accept for a parameter? I thought maybe I could use serializeArray(), but still I don't know what type of variable to accept for the JavaScript array. Finally, I was thinking that I might need to create a simple data transfer object with the data before sending it along to the web service. I just didn't wanna go through with the DTO route if there was a much simpler way or an established best practice that I should follow. Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide and let me know I wasn't clear enough, or if you have any questions.

I fell I should start with html4 and the current web development skills. • What is the most efficient way to list all of the files in a directory (including sub-directories)?

  I am writing a servlet which will examine a directory on the server (external to the web container), and recursively search for certain files (by certain files, I mean files that are of a certain extension as well as a certain naming convention). Once these files are found, the servlet responds with a long list of all of the found files (including the full path to the files). My problem is that there are so many files and directories that my servlet goes extremely slow. I was wondering if there was a best practice or existing servlet for this type of problem? Would it be more efficient to simply compile the entire list of files and do the filtering via js/jquery on the client side?

Background coloR, no matter text length in any column should stretch vertically equal. No javascript (jQuery workarounds) to make it work. It needs to be pure Semantic Markup with CSS. Each Column should have a nested column of color were content will go. Column 1 should be SEO prominant which means the highest nested column for Google and other Search Engines to crawl. I have used 'The Holy Grail" layout, articles at "A List Apart" and these solution are so convoluted that they push the main columns left and than the nested columns push them with padding back right. This is crazy! I try to adjust these examples, but they're not editable by just adjusting a width in the CSS or the padding, etc. Can you please help me?

• html5media & flowplayer wmode issues...

  I'm working on our new homepage and need to implement a solution that will run a video across iphone/ipad and the standard web browsers. I found a pretty decent solution with html5media - http://code.google.com/p/html5media/ but ran across an issue with a jquery dropdown falling behind the the swf object (this only happens on FF & IE - works fine on Safari & Chrome because it's loading mp4 instead of a swf object). I know the issue is the wmode setting but can not for the life of me figure out where to set it in the html5media (http://html5media.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/html5media.min.js). I'm hoping someone can help me or possibly give me a better solution of implementing the video.   The select() and pselect() system calls modify their arguments (the 'struct fd_set *' arguments), so the input value tells the system which file descriptors to check and the return values tell the programmer which file descriptors are currently usable. If you are going to call them repeatedly for the same set of file descriptors, you need to ensure that you have a fresh copy of the descriptors for each call. The obvious way to do that is to use a structure copy: struct fd_set ref_set_rd; struct fd_set ref_set_wr; struct fd_set ref_set_er; ... ...code to set the reference fd_set_xx values... ... while (!done) { struct fd_set act_set_rd = ref_set_rd; struct fd_set act_set_wr = ref_set_wr; struct fd_set act_set_er = ref_set_er; int bits_set = select(max_fd, &act_set_rd, &act_set_wr, &act_set_er, &timeout); if (bits_set > 0) { ...process the output values of act_set_xx... } } My question: Are there any platforms where it is not safe to do a structure copy of the struct fd_set values as shown? I'm concerned lest there be hidden memory allocation or anything unexpected like that. (There are macros/functions FD_SET(), FD_CLR(), FD_ZERO() and FD_ISSET() to mask the internals from the application.) I can see that MacOS X (Darwin) is safe; other BSD-based systems are likely to be safe, therefore. You can help by documenting other systems that you know are safe in your answers. (I do have minor concerns about how well the struct fd_set would work with more than 8192 open file descriptors - the default maximum number of open files is only 256, but the maximum number is 'unlimited'. Also, since the structures are 1 KB, the copying code is not dreadfully efficient, but then running through a list of file descriptors to recreate the input mask on each cycle is not necessarily efficient either. Maybe you can't do select() when you have that many file descriptors open, though that is when you are most likely to need the functionality.) I feel like I'm missing something obvious here, but I just can't seem to figure it out why I can't get the right data out. Could someone point me in the right direction or show me what I'm doing wrong here? Am I using a model for the wrong thing?

• With javascript, is it possible to define a variable's name with another string value?

  Example, I have an array called 'categories' with the value ['4','9']. I'm trying to use that value with the name of a previously defined array. I have several arrays defined earlier called row1, row2, row3 etc. I'm also using jQuery. Trying to do something like this: for (i=0; i<categories.length; i++) { row+categories[i].push($(this).attr('id')); console.log(row+categories[i]); } Obviously row+categories[i] doesn't work, but maybe gives you an idea of what I'm trying to do? In this case to push that id value onto the array 'row4' the first time it loops through and then 'row9' the second time. Thanks for your help!!
