• Win7: could not find item upon creation?

  Hello, I'm getting the following error every time I try to create a folder: http://flx.me/imgdump/flx457.png When I press try again it actually does create it. So far I did a complete disk check of C:\ and I've tried safe mode. Both result in the same error. Any ideas? Thanks, Dennis

• CentOS Live CD Creation issues

  I am creating my customized CentOS 6.3 Live CD. I am following information given at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset My "livecd-creator" command completes successfully and an ISO image is created. But when I try to boot up my system with this ISO, it goes up to the CentOS blue screen and then the CAPS lock and Scroll Lock LEDs on the keyboard starts flashing. Then from here after, the system takes no input from keyboard and I have to power cycle it and it does the same thing. Could you get me any suggestion why this is causing and possible workaround. Thanks.

• Automate creation of Windows startup script?

  Is there a good way to automate installing local startup (rather than login) scripts in Windows XP and Windows 7, via the command line, WMI, COM, or otherwise (even Win32 if it comes to that)? I need to setup a local startup script on a large number of computers, and unfortunately, Active Directory is absolutely not an option. I would like to write a script or small program that I can run on each computer to perform the startup script installation in order to save myself a lot of error-prone point-and-click manual labor. I see that when one uses gpedit.msc to create a local startup script, information about the script gets stored in the registry here: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\Scripts\Startup However, if you create such a script and then delete its registry key, the script will remain listed in the local Group Policy editor; as is so often the case in Windows, apparently there is more going on there than meets the eye. This leads me to question whether it's safe to manually add subkeys for new startup scripts here (I wouldn't want my script to be overwritten by later changes made using the local Group Policy editor, for instance)... Another option that's occurred to me is to create an item in the Task Scheduler configured to run at system startup. However, my concerns there are twofold: Can this be automated any more easily? For instance, the at command doesn't appear to let you schedule a task for system startup, and WMI's Win32_ScheduledJob interface looks unreliable (it fails to show any of my currently scheduled tasks, for one thing). Would I be able to prevent users from logging in until the scheduled startup task is completed, as can be done with "normal" Windows startup scripts?   I have a batch script that I use when I set up new Windows 7 PCs that creates a user based on a variable, creates a folder on their desktop, then shares it: @echo off SET /p unitnumber="Enter unit number: " net user unit%unitnumber% password /add /expire:never MD "C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting #%unitnumber%" runas /user:administrator "net share "Accounting#%unitnumber%"="C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting#%unitnumber"" I discovered that the share that is created is overwritten when the newly created user first logs on, because Windows creates builds their profile directory at that time. Is there any way to initiate a build of a user's profile directory in the batch file just after creating the it? The only thing that looks useful is the /homedir:pathname switch for the net user command, but I believe that option assumes the directory already exists. Other than that web research hasn't been fruitful. I'd be to use whatever to get this done as long as I can incorporate/launch it from the batch. Any suggestions?

I have a question regarding creating rescue disks. I am following the steps as mentioned in this document. If I am creating an ISO file based on the document, how it is relates to the backup I have taken to my external disk ?   I know Ghost and Clonezilla aren't able to build images of a system while the system is running(Without Rebooting). Haven't Checked on Acronis though, but i don't simpatize with private solutions. Question: Is there a software solution which is able to build a "Live" image? Would appreciate anwsers, since I'm one step away from building a Clonezilla test enviroment and this will just help on my decision. Thank you.

  I have a technical question concerning subdomains. My installation is UBUNTU 12.04 and WEBMIN for administration (using Apache web server). I am trying to create a subdomain to one IP (the domain is www.ithemis.gr and I want to create test.ithemis.gr and/or test1.ithemis.gr) with no success. I think I've tried the right way to set subdomains. The address does not resolving (I have already created DNS records via BIND). Do you have any suggestions? I am very new in server administration. • Hyper-V Virtual Disk Creation Taking Forver

  After some struggle, I finally managed to set up Hyper-V 2008 R2 on our server. So I connected to it using the Hyper-V Manager from a Windows 7 client and used the "New Virtual Machine Wizard". I set up a 350GB virtual hard disk. So I hit the "finish" button and the Hyper-V manager has been working for 24hours now, showing merely a dialog "Creating Disk". A console on the Hyper-V still reports 99.9% free space on the HD, but the machines HD LED flashes from time to time (making a rather idle impression, it's not flashing frenetically). Does this usually take this long? Is there a way to find out whether it's still working or just idling? Should I repeat the process? Guides on the net tell me to be patient, but 1d seems a bit extreme!?

• Problems with MGCP proxy creation

  Hi, I'm trying to bypass my ISP router with my FreeBSD server (I've an optical connection so I've a RJ45 used to connect the box to WAN) Internet and TV are working fine (Using igmpproxy to forward TV stream) but I've a problem with phone. ISP's box is connected to the server which gives it a LAN address. The problem is that when the box builds MGCP packets (and especially SDP ones) it uses its LAN address. So I've think of writing an UDP proxy to handle MGCP and SDP packets in order to replace LAN address with server WAN address and then forward packet to WAN. Before starting coding I've captured stream packets using my server as a bridge between WAN connection and the ISP's box. And, in order to see if my solution is viable, I've tried to send those packets to the box using nemesis. I tried to send a packet (found in capture) containing an endpoint audit: AUEP 1447 aaln/[email protected] MGCP 1.0 F: A In the wireshark capture the box replied: 200 1447 OK A: a:PCMU;PCMA;G726-16;G726-24;G726-32;G726-40;G.723.1-5.3;G.723.1-6.3;G729;TELEPHONE-EVENT, fmtp:"TELEPHONE-EVENT 0-15,144,149,159", p:10-30, b:4-40, e:on, t:00, s:on, v:L;M;G;D, m:sendonly;recvonly;sendrecv;inactive;confrnce;replcate;netwtest;netwloop, dq-gi But when I use nemesis, I got an ICMP error: Port unreachable (Type 3, Code 3). To build this packet, WAN source address of the capture is replaced with my server LAN address, using the mgcp-callagent port (2727) and the packet is sent to the LAN address of the box at mgcp-gateway port (2427). The command I use is nemesis udp -S 192.168.2.1 -D 192.168.2.2 -x 2727 -y 2427 -P packet_to_send. I also tried an UDP scan to the box on callagent and gateway port: PORT STATE SERVICE 2727/udp open|filtered unknown 2427/udp closed unknown I found those results a little bit strange because it should be the 2427 port opened, as it was in capture. Internet Protocol, Src: <ISP MGCP Server>, Dst: <My WAN Address> User Datagram Protocol, Src Port: mgcp-callagent (2727), Dst Port: mgcp-gateway (2427) Does someone has any idea about how having my box responding to my requests ? • Copy Database Wizard fails on creation of view into another not-yet-copied database

  Update - I found that doing a manual detach/reattach using MSDN article "How to: Move a Database Using Detach and Attach (Transact-SQL)" got around this issue. I'll just be creating a script to dettach and reattach but do the file copies manually. Any info on how to overcome the problems with the wizard would be helpful in the future. I am in the process of moving around 20 databases from our current server to a new one. When performing the copies however I have found that some databases can not copy if they have views into other databases that have not yet been copied to the target system. The log file generated says "failed with the following error: "Invalid object name" in reference to the database in the view. If I first copy just the database referenced in the view and then in a separate step copy the database over containing the view it is successful. However some other database have views into each other so can't just adjust the order in which the copy occurs. Is there any way to ignore this error and just allow everything to copy?

(i.e. not mult-volume zip files, that you can't lost any one of the files, otherwise you can't unzip) Is there any tools available to do so?   I am trying to get Project Server 2010 up and running on a Win Server 2008 box. I've got Sharepoint 2010 installed and Project Server 2010 installed. I open SharePoint Central Administration, then I go to Manage Service Applications Project Server Service Application. It looks like there is a site under the "Sharepoint - 80" section, but the Status says "Failed - see the Application event Log". When I click on the site and select "Retry" I get the same thing. In the event viewer, I see an error with SharePoint Foundation Search as the Source - it reads: Could not create a database session. Context: Application '276504a6-93b1-4c1f-a900-fd6ed9d5c117' Details: The database connection string is not available. (0xc0041228) How can I fix this? Is there some configuration I missed?

• Automated VLAN creation with residential Wireless devices

  We've got a few WRT devices from Linksys here, and the issue has arisen to deploy them in a relatively small environment, However, in the interest of manageability we'd like to be able to automatically VLAN (ideally NOT subnet) every user from one another. It seems obvious to me that the default firmware isn't capable of this - can OpenWRT/Tomato/DD-WRT support any sort of functionality such that new users are automatically VLANed or otherwise logically separated from other users? It seems like there's an easy IPtables or PF solution here, but I've been wrong before. (If that seemed a little ambiguous, heres an example) User 1 sends DHCP request to server, new VLAN (We'll call VLAN 1) is created, user is placed in that VLAN. Then, user 2 sends a DHCP request and is placed in VLAN 2 etc. etc.

• Set modified date = created date or null on record creation?

  I've been following the convention of adding created and modified columns to most of my database tables. I also have been leaving the modified column as null on record creation and only setting a value on actual modification. The other alternative is to set the modified date to be equal to created date on record creation. I've been doing it the former way but I recent ran into one con which is seriously making me think of switching. I needed to set a database cache dependency to find out if any existing data has been changed or new data added. Instead of being able to do the following: SELECT MAX(modified) FROM customer I have to do this: SELECT GREATEST(MAX(created), MAX(modified)) FROM customer The negative being that it's a more complicated query and slower. Another thing is in file systems I believe they usually use the second convention of setting modified date = created date on creation. What are the pros and cons of the different methods? That is, what are the issues to consider?

  I have a domain in my HOSTS file; www.mytestbusiness.com However, I want to convert some folders into subdomains automatically, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/birmingham www.mytestbusiness.com/london which should be: www.birmingham.mytestbusiness.com www.london.mytestbusiness.com Only for some folders do I want to keep it as a domain/folder link, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/styles/ I don't want the CSS folder becoming a subdomain, or certain folders like cgi-bin, dwoo etc. (dwoo contains the site templates!) I am running Apache 2.2 on Windows 7 Home Edition, and the site has no issues, it's just creating subdomains in .htaccess without having to manually declare them which is the problem. What's the best way to do this, other than manually declaring them in httpd-vhosts.conf as I used to do? Thanks

  A laptop hard disk is being defective, but I managed to be lucky enough to get access to it, using an Ubuntu live cd. Now, I think it would be nice to dump the whole thing, using, for instance, a combination of gzip and split. But that would make the resulting files unusable. I could make a VMware image of it instead. I'm currently looking for the answer, which involves finding how vmware manages fixed size virtual partitions, but maybe you already did this before.   I would like to automate code-first database generation during the automated CI build of a web project in Team Foundation Server 2010. When run locally the tests create a code-first database specified by the connection string in the app.config of the tests project. How do I configure the TFS Build Configuration to mimic this behaviour on the TFS build server? Edit The problem, it turns out, was that the TFS build server was successfully running the test which was using the default connection string in the app.config which pointed to the local SQL Server, not where I expected it. The solution was to use SlowCheetah on the TFS server as a means to transform the App.config file using the QA transform as per this blog article.
