• htaccess password protection and mod-rewrite?

  hey guys, i wonder how i can solve the following problem. on the root directory of my server lies a file calles upload.php i want to be able to add a "/upload" (without .php) to my URL and the browser should ask for a password (and maybe username if possible). • How do you create a transaction that spans multiple statements in Python with MySQLdb?

  I know that with an InnoDB table, transactions are autocommit, however I understand that to mean for a single statement? For example, I want to check if a user exists in a table, and then if it doesn't, create it. However there lies a race condition. I believe using a transaction prior to doing the select, will ensure that the table remains untouched until the subsequent insert, and the transaction is committed. How can you do this with MySQLdb and Python?

• Why is this widely used script killing my processor

• why is my centos, nginx, php,mysql server using so much memory

  i'm not sure where the problem lies. I have: centos 6 mysql php php-fpm wordpress (1 site). this is a dedicated server i'm learning on. as soon as i ran the web url the memory slammed to 125% of a 512k server, i had to upgrade to 1gig, so i'm not sure where the problem lies. I thought by switching to nginx from apache i would have more memory free, but i'm still stuck with the problem. before launching the site with nginx and mysqld running the site was about 5% memory. I reanamed my "my-small.cnf" to my.cnf and put in my /etc folder where the original was, but that seems not to have done it. after looking at my TOP results, i'm starting to think it may be php-fpm eating my memory, but not sure. is php-fpm the preferend way or is there something better to use. • Error on 64 Bit Install of IIS &ndash; LoadLibraryEx failed on aspnet_filter.dll

  I’ve been having a few problems with my Windows 7 install and trying to get IIS applications to run properly in 64 bit. After installing IIS and creating virtual directories for several of my applications and firing them up I was left with the following error message from IIS: Calling LoadLibraryEx on ISAPI filter “c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll” failed This is on Windows 7 64 bit and running on an ASP.NET 4.0 Application configured for running 64 bit (32 bit disabled). It’s also on what is essentially a brand new installation of IIS and Windows 7. So it failed right out of the box. The problem here is that IIS is trying to loading this ISAPI filter from the 32 bit folder – it should be loading from Framework64 folder note the Framework folder. The aspnet_filter.dll component is a small Win32 ISAPI filter used to back up the cookieless session state for ASP.NET on IIS 7 applications. It’s not terribly important because of this focus, but it’s a default loaded component. After a lot of fiddling I ended up with two solutions (with the help and support of some Twitter folks): Switch IIS to run in 32 bit mode Fix the filter listing in ApplicationHost.config Switching IIS to allow 32 Bit Code This is a quick fix for the problem above which enables 32 bit code in the Application Pool. The problem above is that IIS is trying to load a 32 bit ISAPI filter and enabling 32 bit code gets you around this problem. To configure your Application Pool, open the Application Pool in IIS Manager bring up Advanced Options and Enable 32 Bit Applications: And voila the error message above goes away. Fix Filters Enabling 32 bit code is a quick fix solution to this problem, but not an ideal one. If you’re running a pure .NET application that doesn’t need to do COM or pInvoke Interop with 32 bit apps there’s usually no need for enabling 32 bit code in an Application Pool as you can run in native 64 bit code. So trying to get 64 bit working natively is a pretty key feature in my opinion :-) So what’s the problem – why is IIS trying to load a 32 bit DLL in a 64 bit install, especially if the application pool is configured to not allow 32 bit code at all? The problem lies in the server configuration and the fact that 32 bit and 64 bit configuration settings exist side by side in IIS. If I open my Default Web Site (or any other root Web Site) and go to the ISAPI filter list here’s what I see: Notice that there are 3 entries for ASP.NET 4.0 in this list. Only two of them however are specifically scoped to the specifically to 32 bit or 64 bit. As you can see the 64 bit filter correctly points at the Framework64 folder to load the dll, while both the 32 bit and the ‘generic’ entry point at the plain Framework 32 bit folder. Aha! Hence lies our problem. You can edit ApplicationHost.config manually, but I ran into the nasty issue of not being able to easily edit that file with the 32 bit editor (who ever thought that was a good idea???? WTF). You have to open ApplicationHost.Config in a 64 bit native text editor – which Visual Studio is not. Or my favorite editor: EditPad Pro. Since I don’t have a native 64 bit editor handy Notepad was my only choice. Or as an alternative you can use the IIS 7.5 Configuration Editor which lets you interactively browse and edit most ApplicationHost settings. You can drill into the configuration hierarchy visually to find your keys and edit attributes and sub values in property editor type interface. I had no idea this tool existed prior to today and it’s pretty cool as it gives you some visual clues to options available – especially in absence of an Intellisense scheme you’d get in Visual Studio (which doesn’t work). To use the Configuration Editor go the Web Site root and use the Configuration Editor option in the Management Group. Drill into System.webServer/isapiFilters and then click on the Collection’s … button on the right. You should now see a display like this: which shows all the same attributes you’d see in ApplicationHost.config (cool!). These entries correspond to these raw ApplicationHost.config entries: <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0" /> <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0_64bit" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0,bitness64" /> <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0_32bit" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0,bitness32" /> The key attribute we’re concerned with here is the preCondition and the bitness subvalue. Notice that the ‘generic’ version – which comes first in the filter list – has no bitness assigned to it, so it defaults to 32 bit and the 32 bit dll path. And this is where our problem comes from. The simple solution to fix the startup problem is to remove the generic entry from this list here or in the filters list shown earlier and leave only the bitness specific versions active. The preCondition attribute acts as a filter and as you can see here it filters the list by runtime version and bitness value. This is something to keep an eye out in general – if a bitness values are missing it’s easy to run into conflicts like this with any settings that are global and especially those that load modules and handlers and other executable code. On 64 bit systems it’s a good idea to explicitly set the bitness of all entries or remove the non-specific versions and add bit specific entries. So how did this get misconfigured? I installed IIS before everything else was installed on this machine and then went ahead and installed Visual Studio. I suspect the Visual Studio install munged this up as I never saw a similar problem on my live server where everything just worked right out of the box. In searching about this problem a lot of solutions pointed at using aspnet_regiis –r from the Framework64 directory, but that did not fix this extra entry in the filters list – it adds the required 32 bit and 64 bit entries, but it doesn’t remove the errand un-bitness set entry. Hopefully this post will help out anybody who runs into a similar situation without having to trouble shoot all the way down into the configuration settings and noticing the bitness settings. It’s a good lesson learned for me – this is my first desktop install of a 64 bit OS and things like this are what I was reluctant to find. • Skinning af:selectOneChoice

  A question came in today about how to skin the selection button ()  of an <af:selectOneChoice>. If you have a delve in the ADF Skinning editor, you'll find that there are selectors for the selectOneChoice when in compact mode (af|selectOneChoice::compact-dropdown-icon-style), however, there is not a selector for the icon in the "normal" mode. I had a quick delve into the skinning source files that you can find in the adf-richclient-impl-11.jar and likewise there seemed to be no association there. However, a quick sample page and a peek with Chrome developer tools revealed the problem.  The af:selectOneChoice gets rendered in the browser as a good old <select> element (reasonable enough!). Herein lies the problem, and the reason why there is no skin selector. The <select> HTML element does not have a standard way of replacing the image used for the dropdown button.  If you have a search around with your favorite search engine, you can find various workarounds and solutions for this.  For example, using Chrome and Safari you can define the following for the select element: select {   -webkit-appearance: listbox;   background-image: url(blob.png);    background-position: center right;   background-repeat: no-repeat;   } Which gives a very exciting select box:  .

• VLC without border/window decoration in Windows

  I'm trying to run VLC (2.1, 64 bit) without any chrome on Windows 7. You can achieve it by going to Preferences, and in the Interface tab, unchecking Integrate video in interface, and also in the Video tab, unchecking Window decorations. The problem lies in the fact that without Window decorations there is no apparent way to move or resize the video window - in GOM player, for example, you can move window by dragging on the video itself; is there an option for this in VLC? Ideally, I would like to move the window by the method described above (by dragging the video), and would like the Window decorations to reappear on mouseover, to allow resizing; I'm a new VLC user, but unsure how far the customisation goes. - I'd settle with just the moving of the window via dragging the video if this is possible by advanced setting. There is a similar question here, but not exactly, and no solution to that particular question.

• Firefox for NTLM secured sites

  Spent the last weekend fighting to get firefox to connect to a sharepoint portal hosting my homegrown TFS instance's TFS/WEB and team project portal from a friends' place. Firefox is THE favourite browser and I was hating to se it fail miserably with NTLM authentication. Fun part is it showed the login prompt accepted credentials and like a pestering young puppy came back for the same credentials. After banging my head and various "I don't know what I don't know" attempts I decided to play god and entered the firefox's advance config mode. And voila! there sits a nifty little option called network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris. Assign your URI to it and you are through. No more shameface before those Chrome/Opera users. :). To enter FireFox's god mode, open a new tab and type about:config in the address bar. There is a search box which certainly comes handy shifting through hundreds of options. The root lies in firefox's default mechanism of not allowing NTLM passthrough authentication. Firefox defaults to digest credentials which are blatantly refused by a web app expecting NTLM which results in authentication failure and Firefox keeps asking for credentials over and over again. The steps listed above are same as adding a website to your trusted sites' list in Internet Explorer.

• Scoring/analysis of Subjective testing for skills assessment

  I am lucky in the sense that I have been given the opportunity to be a 'Technical Troubleshooter' for our offshore development team. While I am confident and capable of dealing with most issues, I have come across something that I am not. Based on initial discussions with various team members both on and offshore, a requirement for a 'repeatable, consistent' skills assessment has been identified. In my opinion, the best way to achieve this would be a combination of objective and subjective tests. The former normally being an initial online skills assessment on various subjects, for example General C#, WCF and MVC. The latter being a technical test where the candidate would need to solve various problems and (hopefully) explain the thought processes involved with the solution whilst doing so. Obviously, the first method is consistent, repeatable and extremely accurate. The second is always going to be subjective and based on the approach, the solution (or possibly not) and other factors. The 'scoring' of this is also going to be down to the experience and skills of the assessor and this is where my problem lies; The person that is expected to be the assessor initially (me) has no experience. The people that will ultimately continue this process for other people will never remain the same due to project constraints and internal reasons, this changes the baseline for comparison. I am not aware of any suitable system that can be classed as consistent and repeatable for subjective tests with the 2 factors above, let alone if those did not exist. So anyway, I have to present a plan that will ultimately generate a skills/gap analysis and it is unlikely that I will be able to use an objective method (budget constraints most likely reason). The only option left is the subjective methods and the issues above. Does anyone have any suggestions for an approach that may tick all the boxes?

• Writing algorithm on 2D data set in plain english

  I have started an introductory Java class and the material is absolutely horrendous and I have to get excellent grades to be accepted into the master's degree, hence my very beginner question: In my assignment I have to write algorithms (no pseudo-code yet) to solve a board game (Sudoku). Essentially, the notes say that an algorithm is specification of the input(s), the output(s) and the treatments applied to the input to get the output. My question lies on the wording of algorithms because I could probably code it but I can't seem to put it on paper in a coherent way. The game has a 9x9 board and one of the algorithms to write has to find the solution by looking at 3 squares (either horizontal or vertical) and see if one of the three sub-squares match the number you are looking for. If none match then the number you are looking to place is in one of the other 2 set of 3 sub-squares (see image to get a better idea). I really can't get my head around how to formulate the solution into the terms described above or maybe it's just too simple, here's what I was thinking: Input: A 2-dimensional set of data of size 9 by 9 to be solved and a number to search for. Ouput: A 2-dimensional set of data of size 9 by 9 either solved or partially solved. Treatment: Scan each set of 3x9 and 9x3 squares. For each line or column of a 3x3 square check if the number matches a line (or column). If it does then move to the next line (or column). If not then proceed to the next 3x3 square in the same line (or column). Rinse and repeat. Does that make sense as an algorithm written in plain english ? I'm not looking for an answer to the algorithm per se but rather on the formulation of algorithms in plain english.

• TakeWhile and SkipWhile method in LINQ

   In my last post I talked about how to use the take and the Skip keyword to filter out the number of records that we are fetching. But there is only problem with the take and skip statement. The problem lies in the dependency where by the number of records to be fetched has to be passed to it. Many a times the number of records to be fetched is also based on the query itself. For example if we want to continue fetching records till a certain condition is met on the record set. Let’s say we want to fetch records from the array of number till we get 7. For this kind of query LINQ has exposed the TakeWhile Method.     int[] numbers = { 5, 4, 1, 3, 9, 8, 6, 7, 2, 0 };     var firstNumbersLessThan6 = numbers.TakeWhile(n => n < 7);   In the same way we can also use the SkipWhile statement. The skip while statement will skip all the records that do not match certain condition provided. In the example below we are skiping all those number which are not divisible by 3. • cpanel api fileman alternative

  trying to remotely unpack a zip file, then move the contents on cpanel servers. Some research led me to xmlApi class and the fileman module. And here my problem lies as Fileman module is returning html based on the cpanel theme (which we won't know) - and all I need is a list of files. here is the code flow: * using ftp, the zip is uploaded * using Fileman module unpack zip * loop through unpacked files and move here is my call to list the files: $files_html = $xml->api1_query($user, "Fileman", "listfiles", array( "{$ftp_dir}", //source dir 0 //chooser )); and it is returning the html for the filemanager - which is going to be different based on the cpanel theme. Surely their has to be another way to simply just list the files in that directory? any help would be appreciated, been researching this for past day and can't find solution anywhere. cheers ;)

• Laptop LCD Screen Flickering

  I recognize this is most likely not a software error and likely lies in one of the hardware components. However, about 3 months ago I replaced the LCD screen on this laptop. The company which I bought it through provided a 12 month warranty. Before I contact them, I would like to verify that the problem is most likely the LCD screen and not the inverter. Any comments? I recognize its impossible to diagnose hardware remotely, but it would be nice to know if there is a high probability it could be a component other then the LCD screen.

  The software I've created is hosted on what you could call a "bad" website. It's hard to explain, so I'll just provide an example. I've made a free password generator. This, along with most of my other FREE software, is available on this website. This is their description of my software: Platform: 7/7 x64/Windows 2K/XP/2003/Vista Size: 61.6 Mb License: Trial File Type: .7z Last Updated: June 4th, 2011, 15:38 UTC Avarage Download Speed: 6226 Kb/s Last Week Downloads: 476 Toatal Downloads: 24908 Not only is the size completely skewed, it is not trial software, it's free software. The thing is that it's not the description I'm worried about--it's the download links. The website is a scam website. They apparently link to "cracks" and "keygens", but not only is that in itself illegal, they actually link to fake download websites that give you viruses and charge your credit card. Just to list things that are wrong with this website: they claim all software is paid software then offer downloads for keygens and cracks; they fake all details about the program and any program reviews and ratings; they and the downloads site they link to are probably run by the same person, so they make money off of these lies. I'm only a teenager with no means to pursue legal action. This means that, unfortunately, I can't do anything that will actually get results. I'd like my software to only be downloaded off my personal website. I have links to four legitimate locations to download my software and that's it. Essentially, is there anything I can do about this? As I said above, I can't pursue legal action, but is there some way I can discourage traffic to that website by blacklisting it or something? Can I make a claim on MY website to only download my software from the links I provide? Or should I just pay no mind? Because, honestly, it's a bit of a ways back in Google results. • Remote Desktop Client Crashes following domain join

  I recently joined my laptop to our windows domain and now the remote desktop client crashes when i try and connect to any machine. It works if I run as administrator but not ordinarily. The domain join migrated my local profile to the domain profile which i think is where the problem lies. I'm guessing its a permission thing as I had a similar problem with dropbox and had to delete reg keys and reinstall. I can't figure out how to fix this problem though.
