  • SMART: DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT (under 24 hours?)

    - by flix
I have on my hard drive 2 OSes: Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows Vista( I keep it just because of school). Everything was OK on both OSes,but one day on Ubuntu I was getting awkward noises from my notebooks's hard drive and then everything stops and I couldn't do anything. On Windows everything was ok. Everytime I boot on Ubuntu I can get 5 minutes of normal run, without problems. After that the hard drive sounds crazy and nothing works. I could run S.M.A.R.T tests from a older Ubuntu CD (10.04) from the GUI(Disk Utility, or something like that and from terminal). From the GUI I got that the DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT and I have ~700 bad blocks(or broken blocks, I had that test I while ago) on my HDD. From the terminal ( I don't remember if it was fsck or a SMART test command) I got that the HDD will fail in under 24 hours. Since then it passed 2-3 weeks. I've tried "badblocks" but after 10 hours it was still running and I had to stop it. Now I have to use cygwin and other alternatives for my linux apps on Windows. PLEASE HELP!!! How can I separate the bad blocks from Ubuntu so it wouldn't use them?

  • Restore Failure from Ubuntu One

    - by Qawi Robinson
Had to do a reinstall of Ubuntu 12 after 13.10 failed. Lost all my data, but I remembered that I had data backed up to Ubuntu One. It recognized my previous backups but I got errors and a restore failure when I went to restore the data. This is what I got. Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I still don't have my data. Thanks. • HP G42 Ubuntu live cd failure

    - by Jon
Ok, I have tried every option under the sun. I have surfed through the internet for a good 3 hours straight and to no effect. I installed ubuntu on my HP G42 laptop, it worked fine, then when I tried installing the standard after installation updates my wifi failed. In my attempt to fix my wi-fi I rebooted my laptop, when I rebooted I was stuck on a black screen with nothing that I tried to fix it helping the situation. So I then tried to fix it by reinstalling Ubuntu. When I attempted to boot into the live ccd it failed leaving with the now familar black screen. After numerous attempts using instructions from live cd and instal failure blank screen... page and replacing my hard drive at a cost of $65 I am coming here for help. As for the actual DVD that I tried installing ubuntu from it was able to install ubuntu on a mac just fine after my issues on the HP. After installing the hard drive I loaded up windows just fine but I don't want windows I want ubuntu, can you please provide instructions on how to install ubuntu?

  • Password not working for sudo ("Authentication failure")

    - by Souta
Before I mention anything further, DO NOT give me a response saying that terminal won't show password input. I'm AWARE of that. I'm typing my user password in (not a capslock issue), and for some reason it still says 'Authentication Failure'. Is there some other password (one I'm not aware of) I'm supposed to be using other than my user password? I've had this ubuntu before, on another hard drive and I didn't have this problem. (And it was the same ubuntu, ubuntu 12.04 LTS) ai@AiNekoYokai:~$ groups ai adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare ai@AiNekoYokai:~$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Release: 12.04 ai@AiNekoYokai:~$ pkexec cat /etc/sudoers # # This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root. # # Please consider adding local content in /etc/sudoers.d/ instead of # directly modifying this file. # # See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file. # Defaults env_reset Defaults secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin" # Host alias specification # User alias specification # Cmnd alias specification # User privilege specification root ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL # Members of the admin group may gain root privileges %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL # Allow members of group sudo to execute any command %sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL # See sudoers(5) for more information on "#include" directives: #includedir /etc/sudoers.d I can log in with my password, but it's not accepted as valid for authentication <-- That is pretty much my issue. (Although, I haven't gone into recovery mode.) I've ran: ai@AiNekoYokai:~$ ls /etc/sudoers.d README And also reinstalled sudo with: pkexec apt-get update pkexec apt-get --purge --reinstall install sudo pkexec usermod -a -G admin $USER <- Says admin does not exist su $USER <- worked for me, however, my password still does not do much (in sense of not working for other things) I changed my password with pkexec passwd $USER. I was able to change it no problem. gksudo xclock was something I was able to get into, no problem. (Clock showed) ai@AiNekoYokai:~$ gksudo xclock

  • Impact of Server Failure on Coherence Request Processing

    - by jpurdy
Requests against a given cache server may be temporarily blocked for several seconds following the failure of other cluster members. This may cause issues for applications that can not tolerate multi-second response times even during failover processing (ignoring for the moment that in practice there are a variety of issues that make such absolute guarantees challenging even when there are no server failures). In general, Coherence is designed around the principle that failures in one member should not affect the rest of the cluster if at all possible. However, it's obvious that if that failed member was managing a piece of state that another member depends on, the second member will need to wait until a new member assumes responsibility for managing that state. This transfer of responsibility is (as of Coherence 3.7) performed by the primary service thread for each cache service. The finest possible granularity for transferring responsibility is a single partition. So the question becomes how to minimize the time spent processing each partition. Here are some optimizations that may reduce this period: Reduce the size of each partition (by increasing the partition count) Increase the number of JVMs across the cluster (increasing the total number of primary service threads) Increase the number of CPUs across the cluster (making sure that each JVM has a CPU core when needed) Re-evaluate the set of configured indexes (as these will need to be rebuilt when a partition moves) Make sure that the backing map is as fast as possible (in most cases this means running on-heap) Make sure that the cluster is running on hardware with fast CPU cores (since the partition processing is single-threaded) As always, proper testing is required to make sure that configuration changes have the desired effect (and also to quantify that effect).

  • Why does Application.Exit Prompt me twice?

    - by Michael Quiles
    How can I stop the message box from showing up twice when I press the X on the form ? FYI the butoon click works fine it's the X that prompts me twice. private void xGameForm_FormClosing(object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e) { //Yes or no message box to exit the application DialogResult Response; Response = MessageBox.Show("Are you sure you want to Exit?", "Exit", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo, MessageBoxIcon.Question, MessageBoxDefaultButton.Button2); if (Response == DialogResult.Yes) Application.Exit(); } public void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Application.Exit(); }

  • postfix: Temporary lookup failure for FQDN

I'm using the FQDN of dur.bounceme.net which I want to resolve(?) to localhost. That is, I want mail to [email protected] to get delivered to user@localhost. • Call 'script' command and exit it from within a bash script

    - by William Jamieson
I'm using the linux 'script' command http://www.linuxcommand.org/man_pages/script1.html to log all input and output in an interactive bash script. At the moment I have to call the script command, then run my bash script, then exit. I want to run the script and exit commands from within the actual bash script itself. How can I do this? I've tried script -a but that doesn't work for interactive scripts. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Linux servers going into Halt when pressing Control-D in putty or exit in the shell

    - by Itai Ganot
Since today at noon, there's a number of Linux CentOS servers which are going to Halt whenever i type exit or use Control-D to close the putty window. Did anyone encounter this weird behavior before? I've checked the aliases list on the servers and there is no alias regarding halt command. After the server came online i've checked the history and saw a "logout" command there but nothing which is related to Halt. At first, i thought it happens only from my computer but later i realized that it happens to everyone which types exit, logout or control+d. 2 of these server are our main iptables firewalls and so it's super critical, your assistance is much appreciated. It looks like that, and it only happens on servers with active IPTables: [root@srv1 bin]# ssh srv2 root@srv2's password: Last login: Sun Nov 11 17:19:41 2012 from 192.168.12.98 [root@srv2 ~]# vim /etc/crontab [root@srv2 ~]# exit logout Broadcast message from root (pts/1) (Tue Nov 13 10:44:04 2012): The system is going down for system halt NOW! Connection to srv2 closed. [root@srv1 bin]# In my troubleshooting steps i came across the command strace, and so i've opened two bash windows to one of the problematic server and i used strace -p PID_of_bash. When i typed in exit in the first shell it did go to halt, attached is the strace output, if you can check it out and tell me if you see anything suspicious i'd be more than thankful. • How to exit vncconfig process properly

    - by Stan
On CentOS 5.7, when open up a vncconfig, a tray icon shows on the taskbar. Hit close or the x button to close the vncconfig doesn't exit the vncconfig, the tray icon is still there. Next time, if I open up another vncconfig rather than clicking the one on taskbar. There will be another vncconfig tray icon added to the taskbar. Except using kill $pid to remove the tray icon, is there any other way to exit the vncconfig process properly? See screenshot below:

  • Failed Project: When to call it?

    - by Dan Ray
A few months ago my company found itself with its hands around a white-hot emergency of a project, and my entire team of six pulled basically a five week "crunch week". In the 48 hours before go-live, I worked 41 of them, two back to back all-nighters. Deep in the middle of that, I posted what has been my most successful question to date. During all that time there was never any talk of "failure". It was always "get it done, regardless of the pain." Now that the thing is over and we as an organization have had some time to sit back and take stock of what we learned, one question has occurred to me. I can't say I've ever taken part in a project that I'd say had "failed". Plenty that were late or over budget, some disastrously so, but I've always ended up delivering SOMETHING. Yet I hear about "failed IT projects" all the time. I'm wondering about people's experience with that. What were the parameters that defined "failure"? What was the context? In our case, we are a software shop with external clients. Does a project that's internal to a large corporation have more space to "fail"? When do you make that call? What happens when you do? I'm not at all convinced that doing what we did is a smart business move. It wasn't my call (I'm just a code monkey) but I'm wondering if it might have been better to cut our losses, say we're not delivering, and move on. I don't just say that due to the sting of the long hours--the company royally lost its shirt on the project, plus the intangible costs to the company in terms of employee morale and loyalty were large. Factor that against the PR hit of failing to deliver a high profile project like this one was... and I don't know what the right answer is.

  • How to Troubleshoot TFS Build Server Failure?

    - by Tarun Arora
Ever found your self in this helpless situation where you think you have tried every possible suggestion on the internet to bring the build server back but it just won’t work. Well some times before hunting around for a solution it is important to understand what the problem is, if the error messages in the build logs don’t seem to help you can always enable tracing on the build server to get more information on what could possibly be the root cause of failure. In this blog post today I’ll be showing you how to enable tracing on, - TFS 2010/11 Server - Build Server - Client Enable Tracing on Team Foundation Server 2010/2011 On the Team Foundation Server navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services, right click web.config and from the context menu select edit.          Search for the <appSettings> node in the config file and set the value of the key ‘traceWriter’ to true.          In the <System.diagnostics> tag set the value of switches from 0 to 4 to set the trace level to maximum to write diagnostics level trace information.          Restart the TFS Application pool to force this change to take effect. The application pool restart will impact any one using the TFS server at present. Note - It is recommended that you do not make any changes to the TFS production application server, this can have serious consequences and can even jeopardize the installation of your server.          Download the Debug view tool from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647.aspx and set it to capture “Global Events”. Perform any actions in the Team Explorer on the client machine, you should be able to see a series of trace data in the debug view tool now.         Enable Tracing on Build Controller/Agents Log on to the Build Controller/Agent and Navigate to the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools         Look for the configuration file ‘TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.config’ if it is not already there create a new text file and rename it to ‘TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.config’         To Enable tracing uncomment the <system.diagnostics> and paste the snippet below if it is not already there. <configuration> <system.diagnostics> <switches> <add name="BuildServiceTraceLevel" value="4"/> </switches> <trace autoflush="true" indentsize="4"> <listeners> <add name="myListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TeamFoundationTextWriterTraceListener, Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Common, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" initializeData="c:\logs\TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.log" /> <remove name="Default" /> </listeners> </trace> </system.diagnostics> </configuration> The highlighted path above is where the Log file will be created. If the folder is not already there then create the folder, also, make sure that the account running the build service has access to write to this folder.         Restart the build Controller/Agent service from the administration console (or net stop tfsbuildservicehost & net start tfsbuildservicehost) in order for the new setting to be picked up.         Enable TFS Tracing on the Client Machine On the client machine, shut down Visual Studio, navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common 7\IDE          Search for devenv.exe.config, make a backup copy of the config file and right click the file and from the context menu select edit. If its not already there create this file.          Edit devenv.exe.config by adding the below code snippet before the last </configuration> tag <system.diagnostics> <switches> <add name="TeamFoundationSoapProxy" value="4" /> <add name="VersionControl" value="4" /> </switches> <trace autoflush="true" indentsize="3"> <listeners> <add name="myListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TeamFoundationTextWriterTraceListener,Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Common, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" initializeData="c:\tf.log" /> <add name="perfListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client.PerfTraceListener, Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"/> </listeners> </trace> </system.diagnostics> The highlighted path above is where the Log file will be created. If the folder is not already there then create the folder. Start Visual Studio and after a bit of activity you should be able to see the new log file being created on the folder specified in the config file. I would highly recommend the documentation, walkthroughs and videos available on MSDN.   Thank you for taking the time out and reading this blog post. • failure daemon and changing pid number

    - by Alessandra Bilardi
proftpd, sshd and apache processes run with /etc/init.d/its-script on linux distro. I was monitoring 21, 22 and 80 ports with farm monitoring service: every 5 minutes service check each port and notify only failure. The failures were 5-6 times on 24h. It seems that someone kicks the switch sometimes.. I add monit and collectd monitoring and the monitoring about 21, 22 and 80 ports is every 1 minute. I do not receive farm monitoring service notify. I receive only monit notify about failure and/or succeed/changing pid number of proftpd, sshd or apache process. The failures are still 5-6 times on 24h. collectd monitoing about cpu, load average and each process is regular and there are no peaks. There is nothing kicks the switch but there is something which determines failure monitoring. is it a simple interference or is it indicative of some abnormality? What could cause these failures?

  • What have you seen go wrong when introducing SCRUM?

    - by cringe
What was the single point of failure encountered when your company decided to replace the current processes with SCRUM? Can you give me some examples of things that have gone really wrong when a company tried to introduce SCRUM? I'd like to hear your anecdotes, something you experienced yourself, the big fail that you saw coming but couldn't prevent. I hear a lot of concern about missing documentation on decisions about the implementation details, and about story sizes and detail level of the stories.

  • "powershell has stopped working" on PS exit after creating IIS User

    - by Nick Jones
On a Windows Server 2012 box, I'm using PS to create a new IIS User (for automated deployments using MSDeploy). The command itself appears to work fine -- the user is created -- but as soon as I exit my PowerShell session (typing exit or just closing the command window), a dialog is displayed stating "powershell has stopped working", with the following details: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: PowerShell NameOfExe: powershell.exe FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.2.9200.16628 InnermostExceptionType: Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObject OutermostExceptionType: Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObject DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown DeepestFrame: System.StubHelpers.StubHelpers.GetCOMIPFromRCW ThreadName: unknown OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.400.8 Locale ID: 1033 The PS commands in question are: [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.Web.Management") [Microsoft.Web.Management.Server.ManagementAuthentication]::CreateUser("Foo", "Bar") Why is this happening and how can I avoid it? EDIT: I've also confirmed this be a problem with PowerShell 4.0, so I've added that tag. I've also submitted it on Connect. UPDATE: It appears that Windows Server 2012 R2 does not have this same bug.

  • bash : "set -e" and check if a user exists make script exit

    - by Dahmad Boutfounast
i am writing a script to install a program with bash, i want to exit on error so i added "set -e" in the beginning of my script. the problem is that i have to check if a user exists inside of my script, to do this i am using "grep "^${USER}:" /etc/passwd", if the user exists, the script runs normally, but if the user doesn't exist, this command exists, and i don't want to exit on this case (i have to create the user and continue my installation). so what's the solution to make my script continue running ?? i tried to redirect the output of "grep" to a variable, but i still have the same problem :( thanks.

  • how to make man page not disappear on exit

    - by Alan
...probably a silly question but I could not beat google into telling me the answer so posting here: I got 2 machines - Slackware 13 and Fedora 11. On the slack machine, when I use man I can scroll all the way to the bottom then exit man and the info stays in my terminal window (which I find very convenient as I can read it while typing the command in question, copy-paste the options, etc.). On fedora when I close man the man page info is gone. How can I configure man (or is it the terminal?) to not remove the man page info on exit?

  • I cannot install flash player, I am getting 1603 exit code

    - by Naz
I am trying to install flash player silently, using a powershell script. I do not think it is being installed. I looked under "control panel-uninstall programs" I don't see flash player listed there. Also, I am printing the exit code for the process and it prints 1603 exit code, which is "fatal error during installation" As an experiment, I double click on the flash player .msi file, and it gave me 1722 error " Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. "

  • Handling expected supervisord exit codes

    - by Mulkave
I am using supervisord inside a Docker container to manage my running processes and would like to also use it to trigger certain commands - run them once and expect them to exit with 0. Here's one example: [program:central-seed-posts] command = /usr/bin/php /var/www/app/artisan post autostart = false autorestart = false startsecs = 3 startretries = 0 exitcodes = 0 stderr_logfile=/tmp/central/posts-stderr-supervisor.log stdout_logfile=/tmp/central/posts-stdout-supervisor.log And I'm using nsenter's docker-enter with supervisorctl start central-seed-posts to trigger it but I would also like to handle a successful exit instead of supervisor telling me ERROR (abnormal termination) Does it have to do with supervisor events ?

  • Chrome logs me out of everything when I exit--tried cookie-related stuff already

    - by GreatBigBore
I've been using Chrome very successfully for a long time. It has always kept me logged in to all my sites even after exiting the app. Recently it started logging me out of everything when I exit Chrome. I've fooled around with all the various advanced cookie settings, and I've cycled through the options hoping that Chrome just needed a wakeup call or a reset or something. I've also deleted all the cookies in case a corrupted one is confusing Chrome. Nothing works! I see cookies when I log in, but they all go away when I exit Chrome. I've searched all over the place and seen only the standard answers relating to resetting cookies, local data, sessions, that sort of thing. Any Chrome gurus out there, please send a telepathic message to my browser asking it to resume its previous excellent behavior. Alternatively, you could suggest other possible solutions.

  • How to gracefully exit SLIME and EMACS

    - by Gregory Gelfond
Hi All, I have a question regarding how to "gracefully exit SLIME", when I quit Emacs. Here is the relevant portion of my config file: ;; SLIME configuration (setq inferior-lisp-program "/usr/local/bin/sbcl") (add-to-list 'load-path "~/Scripts/slime/") (require 'slime) (slime-setup) ;; configure SLIME to gracefully quit when emacs ;; terminates (defun slime-smart-quit () (interactive) (when (slime-connected-p) (if (equal (slime-machine-instance) "Gregory-Gelfonds-MacBook-Pro.local") (slime-quit-lisp) (slime-disconnect))) (slime-kill-all-buffers)) (add-hook 'kill-emacs-hook 'slime-smart-quit) To my knowledge this should automatically kill SLIME and it's associated processes whenever I exit Emacs. However, every time I exit, I still get the prompt: Proc Status Buffer Command ---- ------ ------ ------- SLIME Lisp open *cl-connection* (network stream connection to 127.0.0.1) inferior-lisp run *inferior-lisp* /usr/local/bin/sbcl Active processes exist; kill them and exit anyway? (yes or no) Can someone shed some insight as to what I'm missing from my config? Thanks in advance.
