  I've got a complete backup of my main PC on 1.5 TB external hard drive that I carry around with my laptop so I can have access to all of my files while I'm on the move, however it has just dawned on me that if someone nicks my external hard drive they now have access to everything! Hence I'm looking for a way to encrypt my external hard drive. I'm after something that is: Secure (if I need to carry around a USB dongle to keep the key on so be it) Fast (the performance of the drive should still be reasonable) Cross-platform (I regularly use other peoples computers - Sometimes they are not windows based and might not even have internet access, however I still want to be able to access my files) Cheap (preferably free / open source!)

• Partition External Harddrive already using Time Machine?

  I have a 1TB external that I've used to backup my Mac for the past year using Time Machine. Unfortunately, my hard drive is getting close to full, and I'd like to move some of the stuff off of my Mac onto the same external drive. The problem is that the external drive is already full with my Time Machine Backups. I'd like to partition 750GB to the Time Machine Backups, and save the other 250GB for personal use. Is there any way I can go about this without corrupting my current backups? I'm willing to delete some of the older backups if necessary; again I'm just worried about corrupting the data.

• Tools to backup an external hard disk

  Hey people, What's the best method to take an exact copy of my external hard disk? A guru suggested rsync, but I was wondering if there's an easier alternative. I do remember reading somewhere that Acronis also does this. Was looking for your advice on the best option. I'm running Windows. Essentially i have an external HDD which has a lot of stuff synchronized across various pcs. I wish to take a backup of this external Hard disk (ext.HDDs aren't entirely reliable so want to keep a backup of my ext.HDD). Cheers. K

• Sharing external storage between different operating systems?

  I just received a Lacie 1TB external usb/firewire/esata drive. I have 2 machines. A macbook running osx 10.6 and a desktop running windows 7. I would like to rip my dvd collection to iso and store on my external. Right now I use my macbook's disk utility to rip dvds to iso. However my desktop is what is connected to my hdtv. I mainly just use the desktop for media. I'd like to format the external with a 200 GB partition for time machine backups and have the rest for storage. DVD iso are often above 8GB so that sort of eliminates FAT file systems correct? Do I have any options to be able to have my mac and pc both see the drive?

• Laptop connected to external monitor results in desktop overflow

  I have a laptop (MSi FX600) connected to an external monitor (Toshiba 19AV500U) with the screen resolution set to the monitors recommended setting of 1440x900. The problem is the desktop is overflowing the display, meaning all edges of the desktop are cut off, so I cannot see the close, minimize buttons on the top and I only see half of the taskbar at the bottom. I have tried many different resolutions but none of them solve the problem. I have had this same problem when connecting to other external monitors in the past, but not all of them, it seems to be fairly random. I have tried to find a way to manually adjust the resolution but I cannot see a way to do this in my settings. All windows updates are up to date, I am connecting through an HDMI cable and I have it set to display only on the external monitor and not extended desktop.

• Need to create street maps images with route plotted from address 1 to address 2

  I'm looking for software to create street map images that show the route from address 1 to address 2. It needs to be able to create the map images from either a database file that contains the addresses, a delimited text file that lists the addresses to route in each row, or an Excel file. I need to do this to create custom maps in bulk- 500 to 20,000 quantity from the data file. The purpose is to provide a map with a route from a location (address 1) to a retail store (address 2). The maps will be printed on a postcard. I have the data. I just need the mapping software. Is there software available that can do this?

• Obtaining a DHCP IP address if static address is not available

  I have seen some questions that are similar to my problem but not a good solution. Ex. User has a laptop and has a static IP address at the office. They also take the laptop off site where they also need internet. Is there a way to configure their computer so that it will obtain an IP address automatically when the configured static address is not available (without making the user go into network configuration and changing to obtain automatically)?

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   I would like to run ubuntu on my external hard drive. I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open. • Why my public ip address is different when I visit different website? [closed]

  After I connect to web via pppoe, I visit different website's phpinfo() page, but the result of _SERVER["REMOTE_PORT"] is different. Including some ip address lookup site like www.whatismyip.com, www.apnic.net etc. and gmail's ip location lookup list are all different. Why? Is these different ip address allocated by ISP on different web resources ? Maybe the reason is CDN by my ISP or the website? If the reason is the ip address allocated by ISP on different web resources, the website visitor's ip address may unreal.

  i want to design a large scale network for an organization with HQ and two branches. i want to use a class A subnet. if i am using the network address 30.0.0.0 for the whole organization how can it be different from another organization company or whatever which is using the same address in another country? now i have the three locations for this organization,so i need 5 subnets [one for the HQ,two for branch A and branch B , one for connecting A to HQ and one for connecting branch B with HQ since i will use central DHCP server at the HQ,is that (number of subnetting) right? is it advisable to use class A or class B for this organization it term of address that will be wasted (let's say it is a university with two branches in two different states)?!

• Difference between accessing a website using Local host and IP address

  I have developed an ASP.NET website and deployed into my IIS server. Now to see that my IIS is installed fine, I type local host in my address bar, and I get the welcome screen of IIS and its documentation in a separate window. Now I gave the url of my website http://localhost/mysites/site2/Default.aspx I access my site. Also giving my IP address instead of local host like: http://192.168.1.46/mysites/site2/Default.aspx also works. Just out of curiosity I wanted to see what happens when I give my IP address in addressbar. It asks me a user name and password saying:The server 192.168.1.46:80 requires a user name and password. I donot know what user name and password it is asking, and as of my knowledge I thought localhost points to my own IP address internally. But what is the difference and also what username and password do I need for it? Update: On chrome and IE just giving localhost displays the welcome screen, but on mozilla, localhost is also asking for a username and password.

  In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code. This is my main.cf in /postfix/ ## -- Sendgrid smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = static:username:password smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_tls_security_level = may header_size_limit = 4096000 relayhost = [smtp.sendgrid.net]:587 This is the error message from the log: postfix/smtpd[53598]: [ID 197553 mail.info] NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from localhost[127.0.0.1]: 550 5.1.1 Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<localhost.localdomain> One interesting thing is when I use "sendmail [email protected]" from the command line, the email is delivered successfully using SendGrid. I think it's because this uses postfix/smtp instead of postfix/smtpD the log for this says, postfix/smtp[18670]: [ID 197553 mail.info] AAF7313A7E: to=, relay=smtp.sendgrid.net[50.97.69.148]:587, delay=4.1, delays=3.5/0.02/0.44/0.18, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Delivery in progress) Thank you

• Macbook Pro + Windows: How to make external monitor default monitor for games

  When I boot into Windows on my Macbook Pro, I am unable to make the external monitor the default monitor. So when I play games full screen, they automatically open up on my laptop monitor. I want them to open up on my secondary monitor. The only solution I found to this is to make my external monitor mirror my laptop monitor. I can't even close the lid of the laptop monitor because that will cause the system to go to sleep.

• Permanently change IP address on SuSE 10

  I am trying to change IP address of a SuSE 10 machine that is running Tomcat. I need to create a shell script to do this so could not use YaST. As some sites suggested on my Google search, I edited the files in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-* to change the IP address. After that, I restarted the network service by calling /etc/init.d/network restart. The network card restarting just fine. I, then, restarted tomcat web service. However, when I browsed the new IP address using browser, I got an "Request denied" message. Can anyone please tell me how I could do this? Thanks

  Possible Duplicate: Change MAC Address I need to change the MAC address of my wireless adapter in Windows 7 (Ultimate RTM). I used to do this in XP both directly in the registry editor and with a .REG file I wrote. I have used each of these methods in Windows 7, as well as a few tools I found that are supposed to do this. Every time I change it, I disable and re-enable the network adapter in control panel, but upon running ipconfig /all it still shows my old MAC address. Any help? By the way, I do have Administrative Rights and UAC turned off.

  So we have 2 servers all running at the same web host. We have bind MySQL to listen on the public ip-address of the database server and the web server connects to it from the public ip. Both servers run on the same private network. Currently, the DB connect method from our php script takes about 3ms to connect to the MySQL database server host.   Hi all. I would like to set a special configuration in our apache web server. I would like to display sites to the users according their IP addresses. We plan to upgrade our web sites. During the upgrade we'll put a maintenance site: so all the users which will connect to our web sites will get this site. but in order to test the upgrade i need to set apache to let only my IP address to access to asked site. If my IP address is a.b.c.d and if i ask for test_dot_com i want to see it. but all other users, having a different IP address, should get the maintenane site even if they look for test_dot_com.   I have a Wireless Access Point device (http://www.szedup.com/show.aspx?id=1706), which I am planning to put into BeagleBoard-xM, in order to achieve wireless communication (LAN). However, I can't find it's IP address. I mean, I have to know it's IP address in order to connect with BeagleBoard-xM via a terminal emulator. For the moment, I have this device connected via Ethernet on my router. My router's setting page shows I have this device connected, but no further information. Is there any way to find the IP address of the Wireless Access Point? I hope of being understood. Any help would be really appreciated.

• How to make Ubuntu LiveCD be able to use USB Flash drive and external hard drive?

  I am booting up Ubuntu 2012.04 LiveCD... and was able to do /sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and be able to see files in /mnt, which is the main hard drive that can't boot up any more. So to copy files from /mnt to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, I connected a 1TB external hard drive and 2 USB flash drives to the computer, but for some reason, in "File Systems", I can't drag and drop files from /mnt into those external hard drive or USB flash drives? I can't open or look into those drives either... How to make it work?

• Accessing server by dedicated IP address

  I'm having an issue with my hosting provider after migrating to a new account. It's taking some time to get the problem sorted out, so I am hoping someone here can shed some light on the situation. The server is running WHM/cPanel, and the site I am trying to access has a dedicated IP address. When I connect to the server like this http://IP.HERE instead of showing my the website the way I would expect, it is showing the contents of a subfolder. So, while I would expect it to load public_html/ it is loading public_html/somefolder/ instead. Any idea why this is happening instead of showing the sites homepage the way I would expect? EDIT It is not redirecting, so the url is just http://IP.ADDRESS/, but the files listed are from a subfolder. So, it LOOKS at though I went to http://IP.ADDRESS/subfolder, when the URL says it should be showing the main folder contents. When I access the site using the domain name, it works properly, so I assume the document root is set correctly.
