• How do I get my Intel HD graphics to work alongside my HD7850, as my second(HDMI out) monitor?

  Title says it all. Further info: Motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro3/ Processor: http://ark.intel.com/products/65520/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Processor-%286M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz%29 So currently my main screen is running on my HD7850. Got drivers from the amd website. I have looked through dozens of questions here. I'm about to try booting Ubuntu from a stick and seeing if the xorg-edgers drivers might help. When booting, all action goes down on the very screen I'm trying to get to work.*EDIT never mind this. Seems to be special boot magic. As the screen only displays whiteline errors once the gui of ubuntu has kicked in and everything graphic is happening through my graphics card again. Connected through HDMI(motherboard)-DVI. So unless having multiple displays is a huge deal the solution hopefully isn't that complicated. I just feel I'm missing something simple. If this really is complicated, I should probably just hook up the display to my graphics card. My CPU is usually the one chilling out though so I'd like to try to get that to work. Also just because I don't want to buy an extra cable and this set up makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Tell me what to try or look up, I'll be most appreciative. Thank you! **UPDATE The x-swat ppa installed some intel stuff. Booting with one monitor plugged into the motherboard gives nothing. Doing it with the pc already on gives the purple "Ubuntu" with 5 dots boot/shutdown screen.

IE; Firefox and IE6 show it differently. • odd problem with jni interacting with dll's - not sure why a change to gc ergonomics fixes it

  We were having a problem with our Tomcat jvm blowing up and giving us an hs_* dump at random times but always in the same spot, that wasn't very informative other than saying we had an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION Commenting out various parts of the java that called particular jni functions just made it blow consistently in another spot. By changing our jvm options from: set PAF_OPTS=-Xms1024m -Xmx32000m -server -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:+UseParallelOldGC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseCompressedOops -Djava.library.path="%CATALINA_HOME%"\jni -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote TO set PAF_OPTS=-Xms1024m -Xmx32000m -server -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseCompressedOops -Djava.library.path="%CATALINA_HOME%"\jni -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote The problem went away.   I have a couple questions concerning Update (U) locks and Exclusive (X) locks. 1) Am I correct that an 'X' lock is put on a resource when the resource is about to get updated? 2) I'm a little fuzzy on U locks. Am I correct that a U lock is applied when a resource is read and SQL Server thinks it might need to update the resource later? If this is correct, would a 'U' lock only get applied when a read is being done within the context of a transaction? I guess I'm trying to understand under what circumstances SQL Server thinks it might need to update later a row it just read now. Thanks - Randy

  I'm trying to implement a custom comparer on two lists of strings and use the .Except() linq method to get those that aren't one one of the lists. The reason I'm doing a custom comparer is because I need to do a "fuzzy" compare, i.e. one string on one list could be embedded inside a string on the other list. I've made the following comparer ` public class ItemFuzzyMatchComparer : IEqualityComparer { bool IEqualityComparer<string>.Equals(string x, string y) { return (x.Contains(y) || y.Contains(x)); } int IEqualityComparer<string>.GetHashCode(string obj) { if (Object.ReferenceEquals(obj, null)) return 0; return obj.GetHashCode(); } } ` When I debug, the only breakpoint that hits is in the GetHashCode() method. The Equals() never gets touched. Any ideas?

  I have a view that will be displaying downloaded images and text. I'd like to handle all the downloading asynchronously using ASIHTTPRequest, but I'm not sure how to go about notifying the view when downloads are finished... If I pass my view controller as the delegate of the ASIHTTPRequest, and then my view is destroyed (user navigates away) will it fail gracefully when it tries to message my view controller because the delegate is now nil? i.e. if i do this: UIViewController *myvc = [[UIViewController alloc] init]; request.delegate = myvc; [myvc release]; Do myvc, and request.delegate now == a pointer to nil? This is the problem with being self-taught... I'm kinda fuzzy on some basic concepts. Other ideas of how to handle this are welcome.

  i want to know the string matching algorithms used by Apache Lucene. i have been going through the index file format used by lucene given here. it seems that lucene stores all words occurring in the text as is with their frequency of occurrence in each document. but as far as i know that for efficient string matching it would need to preprocess the words occurring in the Documents. example: search for "iamrohitbanga is a user of stackoverflow" (use fuzzy matching) in some documents. it is possible that there is a document containing the string "rohit banga" to find that the substrings rohit and banga are present in the search string, it would use some efficient substring matching. i want to know which algorithm it is. also if it does some preprocessing which function call in the java api triggers it.

For data I have the historic stock values (not normalized), news (0 to 1 polarity) and subjective content (also a 0 to 1 polarity). What is the best AI system to train and use for this kind of objective? Is a simple NN with back-propagation training the best I can hope for? update: Everyone is concerned about the quality of this system. Although I'm pretty sure the system is as good as a random prediction (or even worse), this is a school project around artificial intelligence and web semantics. Therefore I'm only concerned in picking the best kind of train method for the data I have (NN, RBF, SVM, Bayes, neuro-fuzzy, etc). Its not about making money.

When I take these two and then union them together (which I have read several places should remove distinct values) I get duplicates. Thinking that all I need to do is then call the .Distinct() method on this I also still get Duplicates. Do I need to implement some compare functionality in my customer object? My PDF requires many exactly horizontal/vertical lines in a grid and when rendered they are anti-aliased and look very fuzzy and unacceptable to the client. • How can I render a custom view in a UIScrollView at varying zoom levels without distorting the view?

  The scenario: I have a custom view (a subclass of UIView) that draws a game board. To enable the ability to zoom into, and pan around, the board I added my view as a subview of UIScrollView. This kind of works, but the game board is being rendered incorrectly. Everything is kind of fuzzy, and nothing looks right. The question: How can I force my view to be redrawn correctly ay varying scales? I'm providing my view with the current scale and sending it a setNeedsDisplay message after the scroll view is done zooming in/out, but the game board is still being rendered incorrectly. My view should be redrawing the game board depending on the zoom level, but this isn't happening. Does the scroll view perform a generic transformation on subviews? Is there a way to disable this behavior?

The name and the documentation summary suggest that it is an object/data store which can be queried. The second quote and the fact the ObjectQuery class from the Entity Framework implements IQueryable suggest it is a query which can be executed. Did I misunderstood something or is it really kinda fuzzy?

• Small methods - Small sprocs

  Uncle Bob recommends having small methods. Do stored procedures have an ideal size? Or can they run on for 100's and 100's of lines long? Also does anyone have anything to say about where to place business logic. If located in stored procedures, the database is being used as data processing tier. If you read Adam Machanic, his bias is toward the database, does that imply long stored procedures that only the author of the sproc understands, leaving maintainers to deal with the mess? I guess there is two inter-related questions, somehow. Thanks in advance for responding to a fuzzy question(s).

• Blurred PNGs on UIView, using Interface Builder

  Hey everyone, I've added some UIImageViews with png images to my view, using interface builder. Initially they are added off-screen. Later, I animate them onto the screen with CoreAnimation, like so: [UIView beginAnimations:@"slide" context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:0.1f]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseInOut]; [UIView setAnimationDelegate:self]; image.frame = CGRectMake(81+1, 390, 150, 80); [UIView commitAnimations]; Once they appear onscreen, they look really blurred or fuzzy. I've heard of this happening before. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

• Finding matching submatrics inside a matrix

  I have a 100x200 2D array expressed as a numpy array consisting of black (0) and white (255) cells. It is a bitmap file. I then have 2D shapes (it's easiest to think of them as letters) that are also 2D black and white cells. I know I can naively iterate through the matrix but this is going to be a 'hot' portion of my code so speed is an concern. Is there a fast way to perform this in numpy/scipy? I looked briefly at Scipy's correlate function. I am not interested in 'fuzzy matches', only exact matches. I also looked at some academic papers but they are above my head.

• Zooming to UIView and it's sub-views

  Hi, I have a UIView which I can zoom to (as it is set as a subview of UIScrollView). UIView has UILabel, UITextField, etc. If I just zoom to the UIView, then of course label and text field get fuzzy (the same effect if you are zooming to the image file without changing image resolution). To solve the problem I need to increase the font size and sizes of the UILable and UITextField in according to the scale used to zoom in (scale is passed as a param by the UIScrollView). This is where I am getting confused. Changing frame (by increasing it width and height by zooming scale) I get all my elements (sub-views) repositions (because changing frame effects center and bounds) Question: 1. What would I need to do to zoom in to the sub-views and just increase the sub-view sizes while keeping them in the exactly the same position? thanks

  We all walked out of school with the stars in our eyes and little experience in "real-world" programming. How have your opinions on programming as a craft changed since you've gained more experience away from academia? I've become more and more about design a la McConnell : wide use of encapsulation, quality code that gives you warm fuzzy feelings when you read it, maintainability over execution performance, etc..., whereas many of my co-workers have followed a different path of fewer middlemen layers getting in the way, code that is right out in the open and easier to locate, even if harder to read, and performance-centric designs. What have you learned about the craft of software design which has changed the way you approach coding since leaving the academic world?

• How should I structure my iPhone OpenGL ES 1.1 game?

  I am building an iPhone OpenGL ES 1.1 game. I am using the OpenGL ES template provided by xcode. I am only using the ES1Renderer. I've coded some basic touch actions the user can take, and I've begun to think about the overall structure of the code. All I'm really doing is using C in the ES1Renderer.m for my entire game state. I have an array of bullet structs, an array on enemy structs, etc.. Besides using this structure, where my entire game state is in ES1Renderer.m as C arrays and structs, what other ways are there to structure the code? Should I be using C++ or Objective-C classes to represent the enemies so they are more modular? The main reason I ask this is because I don't normally code in C, C++ and Objective-C..so I am a little fuzzy on coming up with a good architecture here.
