For example, you have a table with rows uid, name, bday, and you have the following query. The column sums are easy via the 'dims' argument of colSums(): > colSums(a, dims = 1) but I cannot find a way to use rowSums() on the array to achieve the desired result, as it has a different interpretation of 'dims' to that of colSums(). It is simple to compute the desired row sums using: > apply(a, 3, rowSums) [,1] [,2] [1,] 12 12 [2,] 15 15 [3,] 18 18 but that is just hiding the loop. Are there other efficient, truly vectorised, ways of computing the required row sums?

  • How to handle dynamic site localizations?

    I've got a website that is currently all in english. It is an online game, so it has a bunch of different pages with static text, as well as a lot of content in a database. I am trying to expand more globally and am gearing up to release some localizations of the site. However, I'm not sure about the best way to go about setting this up so that it'll be the easiest for me to manage and the easiest for users to use as well. Should I be storing the translated texts in a database, or should this be done in a completely different way? If it matters at all, the site is written in PHP and uses MySQL.

  • Get more error information from unhandled error

    I am using C# in a desktop application. I am calling a DLL written in C that I do not have the source code for. Whenever I call this DLL I get an untrapped error which I trap in an UnhandledException event/delegate. The error is : object reference not set to an instance of an object But the stack trace is empty. When I Googled this the info back was that the error was being hanlded eleswhere and then rethrown. But this can only be in the DLL I do not have the source code for. So, is there anyway I can get more info about this error? This is my code... in program.cs...   • Validation and Firefox's input caching

    When you refresh/reload a page or use the back button, Firefox is kind enough to repopulate your inputs with what was entered before you navigated away. Though this is a nice feature it does not trigger my jquery validation and the unsaved changes warning I add to my pages. Is there a way to either disable this feature in Firefox (without renaming every control every time) or capture the firefox events?

    I am setting up dynamic forum signature images for my users and I want to be able to put their username on the image.   • Java: PriorityQueue returning incorrect ordering from custom comparator??

    I've written a custom comparator to compare my node classes, but the java priority queue is not returning my items in the correct order. Here is my comparator: public int compare(Node n1, Node n2){ if (n1.getF() > n2.getF()){ return +1; } else if (n1.getF() < n2.getF()){ return -1; } else { // equal return 0; } } Where getF returns a double. However after inserting several Nodes into the priority queue, I print them out using: while(open.size() > 0) { Node t = (Node)(open.remove()); System.out.println(t.getF()); } Which results in: 6.830951894845301 6.830951894845301 6.0 6.0 5.242640687119285 7.4031242374328485 7.4031242374328485 8.071067811865476 Any ideas why this is so?   • Block upload of executable images (PHP)

    It has come to my attention that a user has been trying to create an exploit through avatar image uploads. This was discovered when a user reported to me that they were getting a notice from their Norton Anti-virus saying "HTTP Suspicious Executable Image Download." This warning was referencing the user's avatar image. I don't think they had actually achieved anything in the way of stealing information or anything like that, but I assume it could be possible if the hole is left open long enough. I use PHP to upload the image files, and I check if the file being uploaded is a png, jpg, or gif.

I have got amazing response to this series and I have been receiving quite a lots of email suggesting that I should write more blog post about them. Currently I am not planning to write more blog post but I will soon continue another series. In this blog post, I have summarized the entire series. Let me know if you want me to write about any superhero. I will see what I can do about that hero. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Captain America Captain America was first created as a comic book character in the 1940’s as a way to boost morale during World War II.  Aimed at a children’s audience, his legacy faded away when the war ended.  However, he has recently has a major reboot to become a popular movie character that deals with modern issues. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is the Incredible Hulk The Incredible Hulk is possibly one of the scariest superheroes out there.  All superheroes are meant to be “out of this world” and awe-inspiring, but I think most people will agree with I say The Hulk takes this to the next level.  He is the result of an industrial accident, which is scary enough in it’s own right.  Plus, when mild-mannered Bruce Banner is angered, he goes completely out-of-control and transforms into a destructive monster that he cannot control and has no memories of. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Wonder Woman We have focused a lot lately on this “superhero series.”  I love fantasy books and movies, and I feel like there is a lot to be learned from them.  As I am writing this series, though, I have noticed that every super hero I write about is a man.  So today, I would like to talk about the major female super hero – Wonder Woman. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Harry Potter Harry Potter might not be a superhero in the traditional sense, but I believe he still has a lot to teach us and show us about life as a developer.  If you have been living under a rock for the last 17 years, you might not know that Harry Potter is the main character in an extremely popular series of books and movies documenting the education and tribulation of a young wizard (and his friends). Developer’s Life – Every Developer is Like Transformers Transformers may not be superheroes – they don’t wear capes, they don’t have amazing powers outside of their size and folding ability, they’re not even human (technically).  Part of their enduring popularity is that while we are enjoying over-the-top movies, we are learning about good leadership and strong personal skills. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Iron Man Iron Man is another superhero who is not naturally “super,” but relies on his brain (and money) to turn him into a fighting machine.  While traditional superheroes are still popular, a three-movie franchise and incorporation into the new Avengers series shows that Iron Man is popular enough on his own. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Sherlock Holmes I have been thinking a lot about how developers are like super heroes, and I have written two blog posts now comparing them to Spiderman and Superman.  I have a lot of love and respect for developers, and I hope that they are enjoying these articles, and others are learning a little bit about the profession.  There is another fictional character who, while not technically asuper hero, is very powerful, and I also think stands as a good example of a developer. That character is Sherlock Holmes.  Sherlock Holmes is a British detective, first made popular at the turn of the 19thcentury by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The original Sherlock Holmes was a brilliant detective who could solve the most mind-boggling crime through simple observations and deduction. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Chhota Bheem Chhota Bheem is a cartoon character that is extremely popular where I live.  He is my daughter’s favorite characters.  I like to say that children love Chhota Bheem more than their parents – it is lucky for us he is not real!  Children love Chhota Bheem because he is the absolute “good guy.”  He is smart, loyal, and strong.  He and his friends live in Dholakpur and fight off their many enemies – and always win – in every episode.  In each episode, they learn something about friendship, bravery, and being kind to others.  Chhota Bheem is a good role model for children, and I think that he is a good role model for developers are well. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Batman Batman is one of the darkest superheroes in the fantasy canon.  He does not come to his powers through any sort of magical coincidence or radioactive insect, but through a lot of psychological scarring caused by witnessing the death of his parents.  Despite his dark back story, he possesses a lot of admirable abilities that I feel bear comparison to developers. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. (provider: Session Provider, error: 19 - Physical connection is not usable) Any ideas what this is about? Couldn't get any hits on google or msdn on this one. The connection is MARS and Asynchronous in my own SQL pool. But don't get all excited about that - that is old code that has been stable for a long time!   • PetStore 2.0 - java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'jdbc/Pet

    I download PetStore 2.0 from https://blueprints.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=5315&expandFolder=5315&folderID=0. I tried to build them in netbean 6.8 and I got this error SEVERE: Exception while preparing the app java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'jdbc/PetstoreDB' in SerialContext [Root exception is javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: PetstoreDB not found] Seems like it cant find 'jdbc/PetStoreDB'. So I went back to the website and it look like I have to build the database via Ant script. So at the PetStore home directory, I run this command ant setup ant run And I got the same error when I try ant run [exec] Deprecated syntax, instead use: [exec] asadmin --port 4848 --host localhost --passwordfile /Users/KingdomHeart/.asadminpass --user admin deploy [options] ...     Please take a look at this below line of code in JSF <h:inputText id="name" value="#{customer.name}" /> Quote from java.sun.com For an initial request of the page containing this tag, the JavaServer Faces implementation evaluates the #{customer.name} expression during the render response phase of the lifecycle. During this phase, the expression merely accesses the value of name from the customer bean, as is done in immediate evaluation. For a postback request, the JavaServer Faces implementation evaluates the expression at different phases of the lifecycle, during which the value is retrieved from the request, validated, and propagated to the customer bean. I am not sure I understand initial request vs postback request. Does the client browser make two different request to the webserver?

  • Memory leak while asynchronously loading BitmapSource images

    I have a fair few images that I'm loading into a ListBox in my WPF application. Originally I was using GDI to resize the images (the originals take up far too much memory). That was fine, except they were taking about 400ms per image. Not so fine. So in search of another solution I found a method that uses TransformedBitmap (which inherits from BitmapSource). That's great, I thought, I can use that. Except I'm now getting memory leaks somewhere... I'm loading the images asynchronously using a BackgroundWorker like so: BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.ResizeBitmapSource(ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName)); //BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName); bs.Freeze(); this.dispatcher.Invoke(new Action(() => { photo.Source = bs; })); GetImageSource just gets the Bitmap from the path and then converts to BitmapSource. Here's the code snippet for ResizeBitmapSource: const int thumbnailSize = 200; int width; int height; if (bs.Width > bs.Height) { width = thumbnailSize; height = (int)(bs.Height * thumbnailSize / bs.Width); } else { height = thumbnailSize; width = (int)(bs.Width * thumbnailSize / bs.Height); } BitmapSource tbBitmap = new TransformedBitmap(bs, new ScaleTransform(width / bs.Width, height / bs.Height, 0, 0)); return tbBitmap; That code is essentially the code from: http://rongchaua.net/blog/c-wpf-fast-image-resize/ Any ideas what could be causing the leak?

  • My PNG has transparency, but after saving with PHP GD, transparency is lost [closed]

    I found the solution to my problem. See below the original post and completely at the bottom my solution. I made a stupid mistake :) First I crop an image and then save it to a png file. Right after this, I also show the image. However, the saved png does not have transparency and the shown one has. What is going on? $this->resource = imagecreatefrompng($this->url); imagealphablending($this->resource, false); imagesavealpha($this->resource, true); $newResource = imagecreatetruecolor($destWidth, $destHeight); imagealphablending($newResource, false); imagesavealpha($newResource, true); $resample = imagecopyresampled($newResource,$this->resource,0,0,$srcX1,$srcY1,$destWidth,$destHeight,$srcX2-$srcX1, $srcY2-$srcY1); imagedestroy($this->resource); $this->resource = $newResource; // SAVING imagepng($this->resource, $destination, 100); // SHOWING header('Content-type: image/png'); imagepng($this->resource); The reason I also save the image is for caching. If the script is executed on a png, it saves a cached png. Next time the image is requested, the png file will be shown, but it has lost its transparency. Even stranger: When I save that cached png image as (within Firefox), it saves it suddenly as a jpg, even though the extension was png. Downloading the cached png using chrome and opening it in Photoshop gives the error: "file-format module cannot parse the file". I will show you the shown PNG and the generated PNG: http://www.foodmuseum.nl/SaveProblemTransparency.png Once I try to show that saved PNG with the GD library, it gives me an error. EDIT NO NO NO NO THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE!!!... I ALREADY USED THEIR SOLUTION. The solution in the supposedly duplicate works for showing my image. But I also try to save it with the exact same resource, but then it has no transparency. EDIT 2 - SOLUTION I found out what the problem was. It was a stupid mistake. The script I provided above were cut out of a class and placed as sequential code, while in real this is not what exactly happened.
