• Unable to boot ubuntu 11.10 from external usb drive

  I'm new to Ubuntu (and actually all things Linux) as of this morning, so please excuse any stupid mistakes I may be making. I recently bought an external hard drive for my newly built PC (that is running windows 7 if it matters). I would like to install Ubuntu onto the external drive and boot from there. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and made a bootable cd, unplugged my internal HDDs, plugged in the external drive, installed Ubuntu 11.10 on the external drive via the installer, and replugged in my internal HDDs. Then I set my bios boot order to: Boot from USB-HDD - Boot from Hard Disk - Boot from CD/DVD. Now when I restart I get the message "Starting Operating System..." (or something like that, I forget exactly what it says) that lingers on the screen for a moment and then windows starts. Any idea what the problem may be? ~Relevant info~ BIOS version: Award Software International, Inc. F2, 2/22/2011 Ubuntu Version: 11.10 External Hard Drive: Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive (Black) ~Things I've already tried~ 1) Unplug internal HDDs so that only external drive was plugged in via usb. Same thing happened only obviously my BIOS could not detect any hard drives besides the external one. When booting received error "Could not detect operating system" 2) Formatted external hard drive and re installed. It didn't make a difference, however interestingly when I booted from cd the ubuntu installer said it detected ubuntu 11.10 on the external hard drive. 3) Within BIOS I've messed around with every boot order combo I could think of both in the "Hard Disk boot order" screen and the "Boot order" screen. I'm a little confused of why there are two screens for this. 4) Held F12 during startup which opens (what I think is) the one time boot screen and it gave me the options "Hard Drive", "cd/dvd", "USB-FDD", "USB-cdrom", "USB-HDD", and "USB-something else I can't remember what it was". I tried all of them, but the same thing as before happened each time. ~References~ I noticed several people on askubuntu have tried to do something similar if not the exact same. In fact, I even found a post that pretty much outlines step by step exactly what I did... only their's worked. /jealous. Linky: Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu on a External USB Drive I'm willing to try a different version of ubuntu - it's not like my heart is set on 11.10, but it's a pain to open my case and unplug my internal hard drives so I'd prefer not to do this unless someone is reasonably confident it'll work.   Ok I have recently made some mistakes with installing some operating systems that I should have just kept on a live cd not ubuntu but another os and with my ocd when I saw my lot's of different partitions I just wanted to reset my computer so it boot's up and doesn't load any os and I have to put in my ubuntu live cd and install that and that would be my only os on this computer so I want to know how I can just wipe my entire hard drive so when it boot's I get to put my live cd in and start anew?

• Upgrading a dual-boot system HDD

  I dual-boot my laptop due to lousy VM performance, and have a new 500GB/7200rpm drive coming in to replace the stock 320GB/5400rpm drive. I have the drive set up in three partitions: one for the Win7 system files, one for storage, and the third as the ext4 Linux file system. The system file and storage partitions are both NTFS. What I'm planning to do is use the system image creator built in Win7, then move that over to the new drive. However, how can I migrate the Ubuntu partition, and how do I make sure that the Grub bootloader isn't overwritten by the Windows loader?

Mark EDIT: Once I create a partition on the new drive (with GParted from LiveCD), I get a blinking cursor at boot and nothing else. • Setting up lvm with HDD and SSD

  My current hard drive is just about full and rather than just toss it and get a new one (since it works fine), I want to get a new drive and set them both up using lvm. While I'm at it, I also want to get an SSD to install the OS and applications on. This is my plan: Put / on the SSD (one partition) Put /tmp on a ram disk Put /var on a partition on my new drive Put /home on the rest of the new drive and my current drive using lvm. My goals are: Speed up boot time and application launch Minimize unnecessary writes to the SSD Never have to worry about which disk/partition to store my files on. I want the OS & lvm to take care of that Does this make sense? I'm fairly experienced with Ubuntu but I've never dealt with lvm before.

• Not detecting HDD after installing Ubuntu 12.04!

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04, which I'm using right now and it works great, my extra hard drive was detected the first time I turned on my computer but then it does not show anymore on my Home Folder, when I run the Disk Utility says that has a few errors but when I try to fix it, says that hard drive is busy and cannot do anything else. I've unmounted it and mounted again but nothing happens. Do you know what can be going on? Cause the first time that I was able to see my hard drive it had all the files I have, but I don't know if deleting the partition will format the whole hard drive or just the ubuntu files. THANKS in advance! BY THE WAY, I'm new to Ubuntu... :S

  I am completely new to Linux and have been asked to extend a VM running Ubuntu, I thought I would test this first so have just installed it in a test VM, I added the 2nd hard drive and used Gparted to format it with ext4 so I now have a drive called /dev/sdb1 I then created a new directory called mnt/datanew I then mounted that using the below command sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/datanew I thought I was doing well until when I went into home folder / file system mnt / datanew I noticed I couldn't create a new folder etc, I check the properties and it said I don't have permission as its all root How do I change this, I need to create some data and then test extending the partition as I want to see if it has any impact.

  So about half an hour ago I decided to try out Ubuntu and in the process of doing so, my hard drive got wiped. My Windows 8 installation, and all the files with it are gone. Since my laptop came preinstalled with Windows 8, I don't have a disk or anything to use to install it again. • Formatting a former RAID 0 drive through USB

  I'll try to be as specific as possible here: I was using two Hitachi 2.5" 500 gb HDDs in my Gateway P-7805u laptop in a RAID 0 configuration. The array was causing the laptop to run extremely hot, however, so I removed them and deleted the RAID array through Intel Matrix HDD manager. I did a clean install of Windows 7 on the original 320 gb HDD that came with the laptop. I never did format the original RAID array HDDs before taking them out of the computer. Now, I am attempting to format the Hitachi 500 gb RAID array HDDs externally through a USB external enclosure. The external HDD drivers install on my clean install OS, but when I go into 'My Computer' there is no external drive available. I cannot format in CMD Prompt because my computer will not designate a drive letter to the external HDD. The drivers install and the HDD is recognized as a Hitachi external drive, but nothing seems to show up in my computer window. I need to know if there is a way to format these drives to NTFS externally.

  Today when using my PC as I did for almost 4 years I experienced the following: during opening new tab in Opera browser screen froze. Music (AIMP 3) continued to play for about 5 minutes and then stopped too. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del, but win7 lock screen didn't appear. Caps\Scroll or Num locks didn't switch diodes on keyboard. I rebooted my PC and saw that BIOS suggests me to enter it's settings or load by default. I chose default. It don't see proper boot device (old faitful "insert proper boot" something). After second reboot it said that there is no ExpressGate installed (which i turned off in BIOS years ago). I went into BIOS setting to turn off ExpressGate and see configs: time was not set off, all hard drives present, temp and O.C. settings are nominal (no O.C.) I've inserted my Win7 install disk to try recovery. It did load awfully long (about few minutes) and didn't see current installation. PC was utilized in 24/7 mode for almost all these years. Hardware configuration: ASUS P5Q WS Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5GHz no O.C.) MSI geForce GTX 460 4x2 Gb GeIL EVO 2 (AFAIR) Seagate something 750Gb (4 years as system HDD 24/7) WD 1Tb (for random stuff, 5 y.o.) Hitachi 500Gb (for even more random stuff, 6 y.o.) NEC DVDRW (ALL DISKS ARE SATA) Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W Software: Windows 7 AND Kubuntu on the same drive with GRUB loader. Sorry I can't remember HDDs and can't see them right now, but I think their models aren't relevant anyway. My idea is that due to some system error or hard drive glitch i've wrecked my primary HDD's MBR. Nevertheless I don't exclude the possibility of other failure. May it's be that motherboard or it's SATA controller? Doubt it, because all drives are seen in BIOS and I could load from DVD. Maybe GRUB got bugged somehow, although I don't see how it's possible from Windows. But I did install KUbuntu from Windows (i wasn't myself then), maybe GRUB did write itself in some windows partition and got rewriteen in process? Right now I am at work with my flash drive with me and I need some advice how to fix MBR or to hear if it's not MBR. I'm going to buy new HDD (Hitachi 7k2000) because I think that my current HDD is compromised and it's unsafe to use it as system drive, especially 24/7.

  The USB cable on my Iomega Prestige 1TB hard drive conked out a while back, and I've finally managed to get a new one. I removed the old NTFS file system because I use Windows maybe once a month, and then only for Windows-only activities. So I plug in the HDD to my laptop, and get it to start converting to ext4. Gparted is currently on the "create new ext4 file system" and has been for about 2 hours. Is this right? I know 1TB is fairly large, but the last time I did this, I'm pretty sure it was a fast(er) job.Can anybody shed some light on what's going on here?

• USB file transfer preparing to copy, but file count climbs indefinitely

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 to back up my Windows machine that won't boot and am running Ubuntu from the CD. I copied and pasted a volume of about 160GB to my external HDD. The transfer has been stuck in the "preparing to copy" stage for several hours and is displaying a file/GB count about twice as high as the volume of data actually being copied! The number is now larger than the entire partition that's being copied from! However I know it's doing something because occasionally it pops up with a minor I/O error on this or that file which I then have to click through. I've not had this problem before so I can only assume it's a Linux/Ubuntu thing. More importantly what I want to know is is there any other way to copy it across that will actually work?

  I had a laptop on which there was an AMD X2 display card. Suddenly this laptop went kaput. Incidentally the hard drive was safe. I had checked it using another machine. Further, I got this hard drive covered using an external USB HDD case. One day, while sleeping, this case fell down and since then I have not been able to restore the contents of the Hard Drive (rather could not find tools to recover contents from the hard drive). This hard drive had three partitions (a) NTFS (b) Linux (either ext4 or ReiserFS; I do not remember which one I had formatted in); and (c) Swap. How do I recover my contents?
