• What is a legal way to use music from registered authors in a game?

  I have recently asked a question about music in games like Guitar Hero. I have found that that in Europe (at least) if I do want to use a track composed by a musician member of a royalty collecting society I need to pay a flat fee to the society and not only to the member. So a "one-to-one" agreement is not valid and the society can come up to me and ask me for money for each download. Even if for FREE! This is a fee sheet list of the UK agency: for fee, see "Permanent download services" It is about 1,200 GBP for less than 22,000 copies and they DON'T specify anything more and they said me on the phone that I need to wait and see how many downloads I get before knowing the price. This is kind of crazy as If I give away the App for free I will have to PAY 1,200 GBP!! I am shocked and I feel very bad. One agency suggested me to use a fake name of the artist, but in this way is not fair to my collaborators as what they hope is that the App gets lots of downloads and in this way that other people will get to know about them and hopefully commission them more work. The other solution is to work only with non registered musicians. The question here to you is: Has anyone found a legal way to use music from registered authors in a game?

• What's the ethos of the programming profession?

  I am one of those people who became professional programmer by chance, rather than by choice: I moved to a country whose main language I couldn't speak, I knew how to code... and here I am a few years later. Because of this I never really gave much a thought about the ethos of being a programmer, and working as a freelance I neither had many occasions to discuss this with fellow colleagues. Among others, Dictionary.com define the word ethos as follows: The fundamental character or spirit of a culture; the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society; dominant assumptions of a people or period. So my question is: How would you describe the ethos of being a programmer, and why would you say so? Please note that: my question is different than this and this other ones (although you might have chosen to become a programmer because of the programmer'ethos or you might think that part of the programmer ethos is about "programming being a meaningful profession"). beside the "how/what" part of the question, there is a "why" part too! :) I would appreciate if the answer could be based not only on the idealised vision of the hero-programmer, but also on real working and life experience. • Algorithm allowing a good waypoint path following?

  I'm more looking into how should I implement this, either a tutorial or even the name of the concept I'm missing. I'm pretty sure some basic pathfinding algorithm could help me here, but I dont know which one ... I have a worldmap, with different cities on it. The player can choose a city from a menu, or click on an available cities on the world map, and the toon should walk over there. But I want him to follow a predefine path. Lets say our hero is on the city 1. He clicks on city 4. I want him to follow the path to city 2 and from there to city 4. I was handling this easily with arrow movement (left right top bottom) since its a single check. Now I'm not sure how I should do this. Should I loop threw each possible path and check which one leads me to D the fastest ... and if I do how do I avoid running in circle forever with cities 1-5-2 ?

• How do you properly organize a commercial game?

  For the past months I've been studying programming and I've finally learned how to code, but one thing that is confusing me is how to properly organize the design of a game project - code wise. The game I'm building is a pretty standard commercial game. It has the basic components of a normal game: A world, characters and items interacting with each other and all of this is run by game manager. Basically you play as a hero in a world and do stuff. Fight, explore and interact. Think of your standard adventure game that starts off with an intro, goes to the menu system, then gets into the game and back to the menu. Pretty much like 99% of any commercial game or otherwise serious game projects. Thats what I'm aiming at. The problem is: How do you properly code a commercial game architecture? How do you organize it? How do you make it not become unmaintainable spaghetti code? What specific things to keep in mind when building this, codewise? How you can help me: a) Please tell how do you code your own game projects. What is your thought-process when designing the architecture? b) Recommend books, blogs, tutorials, videos or anything else on how to organize a commercial video game. c) Give hints and tips on do's/don'ts when building a game, codewise. Please help!

• JBox2D applyLinearImpulse doesn't work

Can you explain to me if i do something wrong? Some more code. • Slap the App on the VM for every private cloud solution! Really ?

  One of the key attractions of the general session "Managing Enterprise Private Cloud" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 was an interactive role play depicting how to address some of the key challenges of planning, deploying and managing an enterprise private cloud. • QueryUnit 0.0.0.8 – Trust No One

  Yesterday I’ve release an updated version of QueryUnit, the version 0.0.0.8. QueryUnit now supports AreNotEqual, Greater, and Less assertions and is more capable of managing strings results. I must say that I cannot live anymore without a proper Unit Testing of a BI solution. Just yesterday happened that one of the unit tests at a customer site failed showing a subtle situation where the release of a new version of custom application would have corrupted the source of BI data with a very low chance that someone would have noticed it before several days. It may happen when you have more the 15 systems that handles the data needed by your BI solution. The key message of this situation is “Trust No One”: if your data hasn’t passed quality testing it’s not trustable. Period. • Enjoy Cloud Odyssey The Oracle Movie

  If you attended Open World you may have seen the promotions for a new movie produced by Oracle. The movie is called Cloud Odyssey and it chronicles the journey of a hero to the cloud. The movie is an animated sci-fi adventure. This movie will be played at Oracle events around the world so you may soon get an invite to attend. Interesting approach to telling the cloud story. For many IT organizations, the journey to the cloud is a major initiative for end users. I am sure Homer would be proud. • Why not standard Android emulators?

  I'm new to Android, but have published iphone and bberry apps. I see that I have to create an emulator using the SDK, before I can write and test an app. Why are there no default emulators? Why not at least a Nexus one, or HTC hero emulator shipped with the product? Sure its supposed to be flexible, but why not make it easy to create hello world and play around with a virtual Android phone? Both blackberry and iphone come with default simulators when you download the sdk. Thanks, Gerry

• Problem in getting Contact Info

  Hi, I m working on application in which i have to send all contacts from Android mobile to other mobile through SMS. I don't have any problem in getting contact information but when I send those Contacts after few messages there is Alert Window pop up saying "A large number of message have being send" and ask if you want to send or not. I am testing this application on HTC Hero. Is this problem is for specific mobiles or for all? I don't know what should i do to avoid this window because I cant get SMS Sent event. Please help me with any ideas that i can implement........ Thanks

• camera preview on androd - strange lines on 1.5 version of sdk

  Hi all, I am developing the camera module for an android application. In main application when user clicks on 'take picture' button, new view with SurfaceView control is opened and camera preview is shown. When users click on dpad center, camera takes picture and save it to the disc. Pretty simple and straightforward. Everything works fine on my device - HTC Tattoo, minsdkversion 1.6 ...but when I tested application on HTC Hero minsdkversion 1.5, when camera preview is shown,some strange lines occur. Anyone has idea what is going on? p.s. altough preview is crashed, taking of pictures works fine here is the picture: Thanx Marko

  Hey all, I made a very simple application to start playing around with Android development. It works fine on the emulator, but it gives me the following error when I try to install it on my HTC Hero (v1.5): Sorry! The application Simple Dial (process com.foo.simpledial) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. • Enable GPS and network location programmatically on rooted phone?

  I'd like to write a simple widget that toggles GPS and network location on and off. I've read that it's not possible to do that normally, but presumably on a rooted phone it must be doable. Does anyone know what the code would be? (I only need the code to toggle the location providers, I know how to make the widget.) It doesn't matter that this isn't a 'good' solution, I don't plan to distribute the widget. If it matters, this would be on an HTC Hero, still running v1.5.

• OpenGL extensions available on different Android devices

  I'm in the process of writing an OpenGL ES powered framework for my next Android game(s). Currently I'm supporting three different techniques of drawing sprites: the basic way: using vertex arrays (slow) using vertex-buffer-objects (VBOs) (faster) using the draw_texture extension (fastest, but only for basic sprites, i.e. no transforming) Vertex arrays are supported in OpenGL ES 1.0 and thus in every Android-device. I'm guessing most (if not all) of the current devices also support VBOs and draw_texture. Instead of guessing, I'd like to know the extensions supported by different devices. If majority of devices support VBOs, I could simplify my code and focus only on VBOs + draw_texture. It'd be helpful to know what different devices support, so if you have an Android-device, do report the extensions list please. :) String extensions = gl.glGetString(GL10.GL_EXTENSIONS); I've got a HTC Hero, so I can share those extensions next.

• Can't correctly stream x264 video to mobile via RTSP

  Hello! I'm trying to stream video compressed with x264 and NeroAAC and hinted with MP4Box. When i'm playing it with VLC player streaming works fine, as expected. When i'm trying to open URL with my HTC Hero, it switches to player mode, then starts "loading video" animation, then after some time it shows "unable to connect to server". Sample movies provided with DSS streamed fine regardless bitrate. I tried few encoding options, but always the same result. I suspect nocabac and level=11 but it didn't changed nothing. Is there some more specific encoding options for such type? Thank You!

• Problem with onscreen keyboard on Droid

  Hi all i am developing an application which has a general text entry form. So while testing on my moto droid, i am facing a strange issue-- when i touch an input field ( which is at lower end of the screen) -- the on screen keyboard pops up and hides the input field. So user have to enter blindly. So is this a sdk issue OR it is particular for droids OR am i doing something wrong??? I have tested this same form on G1, Hero..i see no issues at all. Please help...

• Bitmap .compress() returning false

  Hi! The next call to Bitmap.compress(), has a different behavior on the Emulator and on a real device. In the Emulator, result is true, and in a real device the same call returns false. FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(destinationFile, true); boolean result = myBitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 100, fos); The thing is that on the emulator this is working great, on a real device ( a HERO) when calling .compress(), this returns false, witch means that it was unable to convert the image properly. Why is this? Thank you
