  • Architecture behind live streaming [on hold]

    I'm a Comp Sci undergraduate student, and I'm currently trying to understand the architecture behind streaming. I hear several terms and I'm not quite sure how they are related (e.g. streaming, broadcasting, ingesting, etc.) Is there a blog post or book that explains: How it all works in a high-level view (the workflow) The architecture (i.e. I capture content using my camera and want to display it real-time to an audience. I imagine that the content will be transferred to a server, but how does that server transmit the information to several users simultaneously?) Thanks!

    We are a large organization with thousands of users, and we're peaking on our Internet usage. Many of those users are streaming music while they work. We're wondering if providing a music streaming server internally would help on bandwidth. How legal is that? Here are two scenarios: 1) We purchase a body of music legally and stream it internally (I assume this is illegal) 2) We pull music feeds from free, legal, online sources and "rebroadcast" internally (I assume this is legal) We want to save bandwidth and help our users, but we want to do it in an ethical and legal way.

  • MWS2K8R2: Enabling Media Sharing using Streaming Media Services Role

    So I have a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 that stores a large collection of media (mostly mp3s) and I want to be able to deliver these files using a server/client setup with Windows Media Player being the client. I downloaded and installed Streaming Media Services Role. I even setup a publishing point with on-demand access. My issue is I can connect using WMP12 but it only connects as more of a stream and not a shared library. I can pause/play/skip as if it's a powerful radio station which is ok in my book but what I'd really like to do is allow me to control my music remotely, search and play for artists, maybe create playlists (not required but nice) and even connect it to an xbox. Is Streaming Media Services Role not what I should be using for this? Would installing WMP and sharing using that mechanism be a better option? Any Ideas?

Support create recording templates, so I can customize some high/low quality recording. The downside are it requires to open the streaming radio in browser and can't have another sound source. It's recording what comes out from the speaker. What I am looking for is given a online radio url, and the tool can record the audio stream. No matter if I am playing any other music or not. Thanks.

    I want to use the Interval Role in Darwin streaming server,more specifically i want to call the QTSS_SetIntervalRoleTimer() when the server starts streaming a video file.But i have problem in doing this as from what it seems,the method returns QTSS_Err when i do that. I believe that the problem is due to the fact that the callback is made in a a module-created thread. Is there a specific place where this callback must be done?(if i put the callback in the register role of my module it works,but i dont want this,because i dont want the timer starting when the server starts).Any help will be useful,thank u in advance.

  • Dowload size of Streaming Videos

    I would like to know that if a website advertises a streaming download as say 100MB, would my download to my computer be 100MB ? Would there be streaming control packets that a service provider would charge for over and above the 100MB content ? Assume the latest RealPlayer viewer. The rub for me is that I have downloaded MIT lectures and according to my file manager the file sizes have matched up to the download sizes on YouTube. However my ISP seems to think that the streams were larger and charged me for more than the file size of the download. I am left wondering where the data came from.

    What is the cause and solution for the bursty streaming media problem? Example: when streaming from youtube, audio (and video) will pause and start intermittently. When it starts it will be bursty, that is, it will play several seconds of sound in just a fraction of a second. Normal sounds are rendered unrecognizable. Then it may pause and after a few seconds, resume with another burst. The video seems to burst along with the audio. This was observed on Ubuntu 12.04 with Google Chrome.

    I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: WindowsLiveWriter Problem Signature 01: CreateThis Problem Signature 02: 115 Problem Signature 03: System.UriFormatException Problem Signature 04: 15.4.3555.308 Problem Signature 05: 2.0.50727.5456 Problem Signature 06: Windows Live Writer OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Since I was unable to start windows live writer at all, I tried uninstalling it and removing all files associated with it in my "C:/users/[username]/appdata" folder. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

    Many of us have embraced the podcasting revolution enabled by rss feeds and podcatchers. Alot of sites now broadcast live streams of what is eventually edited into a podcast. In most cases listening to the live stream gets you the info several days sooner then the podcast. So I was wondering if anybody knows of a notification protocol / app that allows me to auto tune into certain streams when they go live, or based on a schedule. I imagine twitter could be used for the notification but It'd be better not to be tied to a proprietary service.   • Stream video from a computer to a tablet

    I would like to watch presentations and college videos I have on my computer, from my tablet. There are almost a hundred of GB in videos, so I would like to watch them in streaming from my computer. My wife has also tons of videos so I have decided to do a kind of streaming local service to watch the videos from our tablets. I have found an article about how to do it with Internet Information Server, but the article is relaying in an application that is not free (Expression Encoder). Since this is for home fun, I am not willing to pay, so I would like to ask for some free encoder that can do the trick. I have no idea about streaming. Actually, I tried to hang the files directly on IIS, and the browser tried first to download some of them and some other (mp4?) got played badly, so I could not get a smooth video experience. What is missing? What is the deal with H.264 ? Can I roll with VC-1 and play videos in my Android tablet with streaming with an acceptable quality through my WLAN home network? Any better solution? I'm a complete newbie in the streaming world so I don't know exactly how to do that, and I definitely don't want to reinvent the wheel. Are there any free platforms that I can use for that?   • Booting the liveCD/USB in EFI mode fails on Samsung Tablet XE700T1A

    My tablet is Samsung Series 7 Slate (XE700T1A-A02FR (French Language)). It operates an Intel Sandy Bridge architecture. The main issue about this tablet is that it ships with an installed Windows 7 in (U)EFI mode (GPT partition table, etc.), so I'd like to get an EFI dual boot with Ubuntu. But it seems I can't boot on the liveCD in EFI mode. It starts loading (up to initrd), but I then get a blank (black) screen. I've tried the nomodeset kernel option (as well as removing quiet and splash) with no luck. [2012-09-27] I have used the Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop ISO (I have read somewhere that it is the only one that can boot in EFI mode). I'd say this has something to do with UEFI since the LiveCD boots in bios mode but not in efi mode. Besides, I am not sure my boot info will help, since I can't boot the LiveCD in EFI mode. As a result I can't install ubuntu in EFI mode. So it would be the boot info from the liveCD boot in bios mode. This happens on a ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64 iso used on a LiveUSB. Live USB was created by dd'ing the iso onto the full disk device (i.e. /dev/sdx no number) of the Flash drive. I have also tried copying the LiveCD files on a primary GPT partition, but with no luck, I just get the grub shell, no menu, no install option. [2012-09-28] I tried today a flash drive created with Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator and the alternate 12.04.1 64 bit ISO. I get a grub menu in text mode (which meens it did start in efi mode) with install options / test options. But when I start any of these, I simply get a black screen (no cursor, neither mouse nor text-mode cursor). I tried removing the 'quiet' option and adding nomodeset and acpi=off, but it didn't do any good. So this is the same result as for the LiveCD. [2012-10-01] I have tried with a version of the secure remix version via usb-creator-gtk. The boot on the USB key has the same symptoms. Boot in EFI mode is impossible (I have menu but whatever entry I choose, I get the blank screen problem). The boot in BIOS mode works, I did the install. Then I used boot-repair to try installing grub-efi and get a system that would boot in efi mode. But I can't boot this system, because the EFI firmware doesn't seem to detect that sda contains a valid efi partition. Here is the resulting boot-info Boot info 1253554 [2012-10-01] Today, I have reinstalled the pre-shipped version of windows 7, and then installed ubuntu from a secure-remix iso dumped on USB flash drive vie usb-creator-gtk booted in BIOS mode. When install ended, I said "continue testing" then I used boot-repair to try get the bootloader installed. Now, when I boot the tablet, I get the grub menu, it can chainload windows 7 flawlessly. But when I try to start one of the ubuntu options I get the same old blank screen. Here is the new boot-info: Boot info 1253927 [2012-10-01] I tried installing the 3.3 kernel by chrooting a live usb boot (secure remix again) into the installed system. Same symptoms. I feel the key to this is that the device's efi firmware (which is EFI v2.0) would expose the graphics hardware in a way that prevents the kernel to initialize it, and thus prevents it from booting (the kernel stops all drive access just after the screen turns kind of very dark purple). Here is some info on the UEFI firmware as given by rEFInd: EFI revision: 2.00 Platform: x86_64 (64 bit) Firmware: American Megatrends 4.635 Screen Output: Graphics Output (UEFI), 800x600 [2012-10-08] This week end I tried loading the kernel with elilo. Eventhough I didn't have more luck on booting the kernel, elilo gives more info when loading the kernel. I think the next step is trying to load a kernel with EFI stub directly.

  • What are the ways to do synchronized streaming video and text?

    I would like to have two streams. One being traditional streaming video and another being text. I will also build an interface that allows the user to create the text portion while watching the video. The context of these videos are usually that of an individual being filmed doing a presentation and later the next day for example, a coach will make text annotations (structured data is a plus) with the result being the text stream. It seems this is possible with Silverlight (see the article in the latest MSDN). However, what other methods are there if any? If there any, please give the reasons for why you are recommending them. Thanks. Also, I would prefer something that inst a software as a service hosted solution, but, dont let that keep you from giving an answer. Also keep in mind, the user shouldn't have to do any re-encoding of the video source, the text stream should be separate with someway to synchronize a coach's comments to an arbitrary time stamp in the video.

I've found a number of articles which point to an application uSirius which is apparently discontinued (bought out by Apple or something it looks like) but it is nowhere I have found.     The situation is that I work for a small college, and we have a student who will legitimately not be able to attend some classes for the next few weeks. Most of our professors use either powerpoint or a smartboard, and so we're shuffling things around so that all her classes take place in only two rooms. We want to set up those rooms to be able to live screencast (with audio) each lecture. I've seen other similar questions, but they're all more geared towards recording demos. I'm looking for something more like Live Meeting. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Is there a table that shows what is necessary for streaming video on demand? Specifically what I'm trying to do is stream Video on Demand to 50-100 people. I'm flexible with the format, but I'd like text on the screen to be legible (i.e. not 320x240).
