• Number of processes named 'doodle'

  I have ben using 12.10 for a few days. Just upgraded it from 12.04. This comp of mine, which has a 4GB RAM and 64 bit intel processor, just goes slow randomly. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F6 and login through a command prompt, I see a number of processes using - ps -A I get many instances of a process named 'doodle' running. So many that I have to 'pkill' them by hand. Any idea why this is happening?

• Can't start Bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04 + Plesk 10.1 - "named: no process found"

  I've installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, I didn't install bind when choosing what packages should be installed in the Ubuntu installer. I downloaded the auto installer for Plesk 10.1 and installed it successfully. When I logged into the Plesk control panel and tried to change the password, it failed because it couldn't restart bind. • Is there a programming language that performs currying when named parameters are omitted?

  Many functional programming languages have support for curried parameters. To support currying functions the parameters to the function are essentially a tuple where the last parameter can be omitted making a new function requiring a smaller tuple. I'm thinking of designing a language that always uses records (aka named parameters) for function parameters. Thus simple math functions in my make believe language would be: add { left : num, right : num } = ... minus { left : num, right : num } = .. You can pass in any record to those functions so long as they have those two named parameters (they can have more just "left" and "right"). If they have only one of the named parameter it creates a new function: minus5 :: { left : num } -> num minus5 = minus { right : 5 } I borrow some of haskell's notation for above. Has any one seen a language that does this?

I never expected they could be indexed both ways. Thus, my questions are: What are named tuples? How to use them? Why/when should I use named tuples instead of normal tuples? Why/when should I use normal tuples instead of named tuples? Is there any kind of "named list" (a mutable version of the named tuple)?

• Apply CSS style to anchor problem

  Using jquery I have a clicking tab mechanism that are nothing but anchor tags that return false but call javascript functions to run some events on the page. The problem is I am using jquery to apply an opacity style to the active anchor. and the other sibling anchor get a lesser opacity view. My code looks like this $("#menutab li a").click(function(){ $(this).animate({opacity:'1'},1000); $(this).siblings().animate({opacity:'.25'},1000); } I would think this code would act only on the clicked element and apply that css style to that element and the other style to the other anchor tags except the clicked one. It kind of does that, but also what it does is leave the earlier clicked element to opacity =1, so if I click an element it sets it opacity to 1 and then if I click another one it sets it opacity to 1 while leave the earlier clicked one to 1 also instead of setting it to .25 like the others. Edit: I changed the above code to: $("#menutab ul li").click(function(){ $(this).children().animate({opacity:'1'},1000); $(this).siblings().children().animate({opacity:'.25'},1000); }); and now I get the desired effect, except that when the first anchor in the list is clicked doesn't follow the event rules, When the first one is clicked its as if, the click event is not triggered, because no opacity style changes. which I don't understand.

• Why isn't this button firing the anchor tag?

  My idea is to press a button that takes me to a web page. I've created a thing that dynamically creates a button and an anchor tag. When the button is clicked, I want it to "click"/fire up the anchor tag.. I've uploaded a demo to my site, when you try it out just leave everything as it is. Click the first button then the add button right away.. then try to click the dynamically created button. Nothing happens, but if you watch the source you can find an anchor tag with the ID FL1000, I've set it up so that the anchor tag gets the ID from the value of the created button + 1000 just incase I need to use that ID.. Thanks guys... edit: this is optimized for google chrome, haven't tried it out with other browser.

Where someone using a CMS could type [readmore] anywhere into the Content field, which would be replaced by the above anchor via PHP. In the associated example I am hard-coding the height to 75px, although what I want is for the height to be dependent on the location of the anchor id="stop" in the text. Thanks.   Just have found some funny behavior of the Visual Studio 2008 editor.  Sorry if it is already well known bug. If you happened to have a JavaScript function named “assert” in your code (and there is pretty high likelihood in my opinion), for example something like: function assert(x, message) { if (x) console.log(message); } then when either Format Document (Ctrl + K, Ctrl + D) or Format Selection (Ctrl + K, Ctrl + F) command is applied to the document/block containing the function, the result of the formatting will be: functionassert(x, message) { if (x) console.log(message); } That’s it. function and assert are now joined into one solid word. So be aware of the fact in case you suddenly start receiving  strange exception in your JavaScript code: missing ; before statement functionassert(x, message) And no, it is not an April Fool's joke. Just try for yourself.

• Connecting to named Instances Using Port Number

  I came across an interesting situation where a developer was trying to connect to a named instance using a DNS alias without specifying the instance name. Coincidently though he remembered to include the port number and miraculously it worked. So it appears that sql server accepts connections to a specific instance based on its port number. While it may not seem to particularly useful, I can imagine it could be used in the following situations: To mirror to a server with a different instance name (but same port number) To hide the complexity of instance names from end users and just rely on port number (and optionally dns alias)

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net.   Hello, I'm using .net 3.5 named pipes and my server side is : serverPipeStream = new NamedPipeServerStream("myPipe", PipeDirection.InOut, 1, PipeTransmissionMode.Byte, PipeOptions.Asynchronous); When I write some data with, say, BinaryWriter, the write() call itself doesn't return until the client side has called a read() on its NamedPipeClientStream.   My CSS includes the following: #mainbody a[href ^='http'] { background:transparent url('/images/icons/external.svg') no-repeat top right; padding-right: 12px; } This places an "external" icon next to links that start with "http" (all internal site links are relative). Works perfectly except if I link an Image, it also get this icon. For example: <a href='http://example.com'><img src='whatever.jpg'/></a> would also get the "external" icon next to the image. I can live with this if necessary, but would like to eliminate it. This must be implement in CSS (no JS); must not require any special IDs, Classes, styling in the html for the image or anchor around the image. Is this possible?

• Name attribute is obsolete, what is the correct behavior when dealing with anchors?

  Putting some code through the html5 validator, I get this: Warning: The name attribute on the a element is obsolete. Consider putting an id attribute on the nearest container instead. I find that unclear. Is the "nearest container" for an anchor link the a itself, so that the correct code would be <a id='blah'> instead of <a name='blah'>? Or are empty placeholder <a> tags as a whole deprecated, and anchors can simply point to any element with an id instead?

  In recent blog posts I have introduced the new SSIS Catalog that is forthcoming in SQL Server Code-named Denali: What's new in SSIS in Denali Introduction to SSIS Projects in Denali Parameters in SSIS In Denali SSIS Server, Catalogs, Environments and Environment Variables in SSIS in Denali The SSIS Catalog is responsible for executing SSIS packages and also for capturing the metadata from those executions. However, at the time of writing there is no mechanism provided to view analyse and drill into that metadata and that is the reason that I am, in this blog post, introducing a suite of SSIS Catalog reports called the SSIS Reporting Pack which you can download from my SkyDrive at http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/SSIS%20Reporting%20Pack/SSISReportingPack%20v0.1.zip. In this first release the SSIS Reporting Pack includes five reports: Catalog – A high-level summary of all activity in the Catalog Folders – A summary of activity in each Catalog Folder Folder – Project-level activity per single Folder Executions – A visualisation of all executions per Folder/Project/Package/Environment or subset thereof Execution – Information about an individual execution Here is a screenshot of the Executions report: Notice that the SSIS Reporting Pack provides a visual overview of all executions in the Catalog. • Does ssh key need to be named id_rsa?

  I have come across this problem a couple of times when creating build servers with keyed authentication. I was wondering if anyone else has experience this. I have a couple of keys for my current user that may connect to different machines. Let say machine1 and machine2. I have pasted my public key into their respective authorized_keys file. The first one I have named the first key id_rsa and the second key bender. When I try to connect to bender I get the following output with my verbose ssh connection debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /home/bozo/.ssh/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /home/bozo/.ssh/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Trying private key: /home/bozo/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). It only offers the id_rsa key, as you can see above. Is this correct? If so why? How do I get it to offer more keys? I know it is a problem I see intermittently, because I at home I have multiple keys without much trouble. I would also appreciate a overview on how the pub and private keys interact with the client and server. I thought I had a pretty decent idea, but apparently I am missing something. Please and thank you.
