  • JDBC character encoding

    Hi there, I have a Java Web application using GlassFish 3, JSF2.0 (facelets) and JPA (EclipseLink) on MySQL (URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/administer). The problem I'm facing is that if I'm saving entities to the database with the update() method, String data loses integrity; '?' is shown instead of some characters. The server, pages and database is/are configured to use UTF-8. After I post form data, the next page shows the data correctly. Furthermore it "seems" in debug that the String property of the current entity stores the correct value too. Dunno if NetBeans debug can be trusted; might be that it decodes correctly, however it's incorrect. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Daniel

    Our globalization mechanism stores error messages in a SQL 2005 DB. Some of the error messages are used as subjects on email messages sent to the development team.     I have an application that is being expanded to the UK and I will need to add support for Latin-9 Unicode. I have done some Googling but found nothing solid as to what is involved in the process. Any tips?     Hello experts! I'm having a weird issue here. I have a bunch of Views, in which I have characters like this: é, á, ó, etc. In one of my Views, I can fetch data from the database with accents just fine, but in another one I simply get the "weird" characters. What can i be doing wrong? Do I need to configure something in order to this work? Thanks!

  • req.getParameter returns values wrong character encoding

    I'm trying to get values from a JSP using getParameter which includes ü,é,à etc. But get wrong values in servlet. I've checked the content type with firebug and found that Content-Type text/html;charset=UTF-8 checked the POST section with firebug and found the correct value there, when I try to access it in servlet it is wrong. Gives ö instead of ö req.getCharacterEncoding(); returns null. Tried with setting req.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); at the beginning of servlet but didn't help.

I have a problem in my asp.net 3.5 application (C#) when I try to render in my pages characters like 'è' which are shown in a very strange manner (if i'm lucky i get a ? mark in my web page). in fact Expression Web, when i open my web site, substitutes the è char with �... How can I tell asp.net that I want to use a particular charset so that i can write in the html source letters like è without using hexadecimal codes?????? I tried in the web.config this: inside the system.web namespace of the file but nothing works.... Can anyone tell me how to do? THANKS in advance

    I have a HTML form that is sometimes submitted with accented characters: à, è, ì, ò, ù I have a PHP script that exports these form submissions into CSV format, when I look at the CSV format in a text editor (vim or notepad for example) the characters look fine, but when opened with Open Office or Word, I get some funky results: ????? I am also passing these submission to salesforce and am getting an error: "The entity "Atilde" was referenced, but not declared." What can I do to ensure portability of my CSV file? What's the proper way to handle the encoding? My HTML file is content-type is set as: Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Data is being stored in MySQL as latin1_swedish_ci collation.

    Hi, I'd like to display some language specific characters from javascript but I can't. My app is a Java webapp and the front end is jQuery. All the characters that are sended from the server - in a JSP or with AJAX - are displayed properly. When I want to display some text hardcoded in to the javascript file it's broken. I'm using Eclipse. In the JSP's header I use: <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" pageEncoding="UTF-8"%> I've tried this (charset in the script element) too: <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"><c:import url="/JS/mainJS.js" /></script> In my Eclipse I've set the project properties / text file encoding to UTF-8 AND I've checked the JS files' resource properties / text file encoding that is UTF-8 too.     Some pseudocode from a typical web app: String a = "A bunch of text"; //UTF-16 saveTextInDb(a); //Write to Oracle VARCHAR(15) column String b = readTextFromDb(); //UTF-16 out.write(b); //Write to http response In the first line we create a Java String which uses UTF-16. When you save to Oracle VARCHAR(15) does Oracle also store this as UTF-16? Does the length of an Oracle VARCHAR refer to number of Unicode characters (and not number of bytes)? And then when we write b to the ServletResponse is this being written as UTF-16 or are we by default converting to another encoding like UTF-8?

    I'm having trouble trying to get my character to move for a game I'm making in my sparetime for the Xbox. However, I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong , and I'm not even sure if I'm doing it right. I've tried googling tutorials on this but I haven't found any helpful ones. Mainly, ones on 3d rotation on the XNA creators club website. My question is : How can I get the character to walk towards the right in the MoveInput() function? What am I doing wrong? Did I code it wrong? The problem is : The player isn't moving. I think the MoveInput() class isn't working.     Many times while writing SQL, we need to find if particular character is present in the column data. SQL server possesses an in-built function to do this job - CHARINDEX(character_to_search, string, [starting_position]) Returns the position of the first occurrence of the character in the string. NOTE - index starts with 1. So, if character is at the starting position, this function would return 1. Returns 0 if character is not found. Returns 0 if 'string' is empty. Returns NULL if string is NULL.   • Printing special / extended characters on web page - Firefox or printer issue?

    My dad brought this to my attention and I'm looking into it, but thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any ideas... He's running Win7, using Firefox and printing to a wireless connected Brother HL-2170W printer. He's got a web page (http://cornandsoybeandigest.com/inputs/fertilizer/applying-nitrogen-after-planting-0512/index.html) that has extended/special characters in it - the funny "a" in Fernandez. The characters show correctly in Firefox on the page. He printed it, and the extended "a" printed as a diamond with a question mark. He says it shows that way in the print preview, too. I pulled up the same page in Ubuntu, Firefox, and it displayed in my print preview and physically printed everything correctly. I just checked on my wife's Win7 PC in Firefox and the print preview looked correct on her system, too. We have a Brother 2040 here. Soooo, my question is, is this possibly a problem in the browser somehow, or the printer driver? I'm leaning towards the printer driver now, but I can't say I've run into this before. Is it a setting somewhere? I just installed this printer for him the other day, using the CD that came with it; I could try updating the driver from Brother's website I guess. Is there anything else I should look at or check? Thanks!

    For this question, we want to avoid having to write a special query since the query would have to be different across multiple databases. Using only hibernate criteria, we want to be able to escape special characters. This situation is the reason for needing the ability to escape special characters: Assume that we have table 'foo' in the database. Table 'foo' contains only 1 field, called 'name'. The 'name' field can contain characters that may be considered special in a database. Two examples of such a name are 'name_1' and 'name%1'. Both the '_' and '%' are special characters, at least in Oracle. If a user wants to search for one of these examples after they are entered in the database, problems may occur. criterion = Restrictions.ilike("name", searchValue, MatchMode.ANYWHERE); return findByCriteria(null, criterion); In this code, 'searchValue' is the value that the user has given the application to use for its search. If the user wants to search for '%', the user is going to be returned with every 'foo' entry in the database. This is because the '%' character represents the "any number of characters" wildcard for string matching and the SQL code that hibernate produces will look like: select * from foo where name like '%' Is there a way to tell hibernate to escape certain characters, or to create a workaround that is not database type sepecific?

    Hello. Can anyone tell me how to insert special characters into a MySQL database? I've made a PHP script which is meant to insert some words into a database, although if the word contains a ' then it wont be inserted. I can insert the special characters fine when using PHPmyAdmin, but it just doesn't work when inserting them via PHP. Could it be that PHP is changing the special characters into something else? If so, is there a way to make them insert properly? Thanks!
