  • Why does my macbook pro have long ping times over wifi?

    - by randynov
I have been having problems connecting with my wifi. It is weird, the ping times to the router (<30 feet away) seem to surge, often getting over 10s before slowly coming back down. You can see the trend below. I'm on a macbook pro and have done the normal stuff (reset the pram and smc, changed wireless channels, etc.). It happens across different routers, so I think it must be my laptop, but I don't know what it could be. The RSSI value hovers around -57, but I've seen the transmit rate flip between 0, 48 & 54. The signal strength is ~60% with 9% noise. Currently, there are 17 other wireless networks in range, but only one in the same channel. 1 - How can I figure out what's going on? 2 - How can I correct the situation? TIA! • What to do if I can't ping my DNS?

    - by Moshe Lewin
On my Windows XP SP3 machine I can only browse (with any browser) by putting in an ip address. If I put in any domain name it doesn't work. Skype and IM work. In command prompt nslookup works to resolve the name to an ip address, but ping does not work using a domain name, only using the ip address. Other computers on the same network can surf the net normally without any problems. I am not using a proxy. I already reset winsock and tcpip stack to no avail. Can anyone help me solve the problem?

  • Ping from windows 7 get no reply but sets errorlevel to 0

    - by Doron
From a Windows 7 machine, I ping an IP address of a turned-off machine. C:\>ping 192.168.1.222 Pinging 192.168.1.222 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.222: Destination host unreachable. Ping statistics for 192.168.1.222: Packets: Sent = 3, Received = 3, Lost = 0 (0% loss) Even though there is no reply, the errorlevel is set to 0. What I am trying to do, is figure out if a remote machine is replying to ping. One of my tests is to turn off the machine and ping it. For some reason, ping sets errorlevel to 0.

  • When I ping Internet addresses like yahoo or Google, I get 2 reply packets and 2 lost packets.

    - by navi
I have Airtel broadband and a Tata broadband connection. i have around 50 PCs connecting through an airtel broadband connection. Both are dsl connections with my phone line going into dsl modems and an Ethernet cable going from dsl modem directly into a switch. Currently, only airtel connection is connected with static IP on my private lan and using the airtel ISP DNS servers as DNS IP address and the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (IP add. of the dsl modem). All PCs are connected in a work group. When in full use, my users complain of certain web pages are not opening. When I ping Internet addresses like Yahoo or Google I get 2 reply packets and 2 lost packets. I suspect that a single broadband connection is not able to sustain 50 simultaneous downloads/browsing. Is there any device which connect to both DSL and make one line so that its give me high speed simultaneous browsing. Help needed urgently. Thank you all to those who reply.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Server ping gateway responds with destination host unreachable

    - by blckblttkd
I consider myself fairly avid with Ubuntu and Linux, but this one has me stumped. I built up a Xen Server using Ubuntu 12.04 as the base operating system. It has multiple domUs running on it. My home network has a statically defined network where I got all the network connectivity going peachy. The server was moved to a permanent home this morning. So, the network configuration on the main system had to change. Again, another static network, but now I can't ping the upstream gateway from the host. As the VMs use this NIC over a bridge, they too are broken. Ping responds with "destination host unreachable." I simplified the networking down to a simple static network as seen below (no bridge or anything) just to get it to work. Here's the contents of my /etc/network/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 216.7.188.228 gateway 216.7.188.225 netmask 255.255.255.240 broadcast 216.7.188.255 network 216.7.188.0 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 Here's the contents of route -n 0.0.0.0 216.7.188.225 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 216.7.188.224 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.240 U 0 0 0 eth0 And the results of pinging the gateway: PING 216.7.188.225 (216.7.188.225) 56(84) bytes of data. From 216.7.188.228 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From 216.7.188.228 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From 216.7.188.228 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable Again, this worked in one network flawlessly (obviously with different parameters in the interfaces file). I did try using eth1 (as there are two NICS on the server (in case the MAC address got flipped on bootup). No success there. Yes, the cable is in the right port now :) Any thoughts? I appreciate the help!

  • Why ping another innet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

    - by Xinwang
I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

  • Linux server cannot be pinged

    - by misamisa
I have set up a Linux server in DMZ. There is another Windows server running in same DMZ. These two servers can be pinged via internet using my home PC. However, the another Linux server rented from a hosting service provider can only be pinged from the Windows Server and not from the Linux server (accessed via internet). So the situation is: Windows server (DMZ) ---ping--- Rented Server.....Successful Linux server (DMZ) ---ping--- Rented Server.......Unreachable Home PC ---ping--- Linux server (DMZ).......Successful Home PC ---ping--- Windows server (DMZ).....Successful When I ran tcpdump on my Linux Server(DMZ) and started ping from Rented Server, it showed that the Linux Server(DMZ) is receiving ping and replying. There is no restriction defined in hosts.deny and hosts.allow file that might cause this problem. What else should I check to get this working?

Context: 3 HyperV guest images (DC, SQL, MOSS) 1 internal network 1 domain (PJM.COM) DC: 192.168.0.192 SQL: 192.168.0.153 MOSS:192.168.0.160 I am having communication problems from/to the MOSS machine from the other two. I removed the MOSS machine from the domain and cannot rejoin. When I ping the MOSS machine from DC, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.192 Destination host unreachable (4 times) When I ping the MOSS machine from SQL, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.153 Destination host unreachable (4 times) From the MOSS machine, I can ping the server names, however I cannot ping the FQDN. When I ping from the DC and SQL machines, I get IPv4 addresses. When I ping from the MOSS machine, I get IPv6 addresses. I'm a developer and don't know what steps to take to resolve this issue. Please help!?

I am having problems pinging from a 5505(remote) to IP 10.160.70.10 in the network behind the 5540(HQ side). 5505 inside IP: 10.56.0.1 Out: 71.43.109.226 5540 Inside: 10.1.0.8 out: 64.129.214.27 I Can ping from 5540 to 5505 inside 10.56.0.1. I also ran ASDM packet tracer in both directions, it is ok from 5540 to 5505, but drops the packet from 5505 to 5540. It gets through the ACL and dies at the NAT. Here is the 5505 config, I am sure it is something simple I am missing. • Network icon shows an Internet connection, while ping does not

    - by mushfiq
I am an Ubuntu user for the last couple of years. Recently facing problem to connect my new laptop into the Internet. I have an ISP connection which provide me a NAT address. I changed all the information in network configuration. The network icon shows it is connected to Internet but when I browse, ping shows no Internet connection. /etc/network/interfaces look like this: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.100.118(put you internet address provided by the ISP) gateway 192.168.100.1(gateway address) netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.100.0 And when I ping my DNS server IP get the reply from DNS server. I can not understand the problem,it should be mentioned that I also changed the Physical address of my laptop for using the existing connection. In windows the connection is working fine. Any suggestion in this question will help me a lot. Thanks in advance.

  • Can't ping external websites

    - by Frantumn
I can't ping google.com with my virtual ubuntu 12.04 server. I have set up a proxy URL in my /etc/apt/apt.conf file and it says Aquire::http::proxy http://urlname.com:9999; Now, I don't know a lot about how the proxy works, but I do know when we use it on windows VMachines it's a pac script that we place in internet explorer LAN settings and it automatically detects the script and gives internet access. I tried including the 9999/proxy.pac in the apt.conf URL and it didn't seem to work any better. Would ubuntu know how to handle a proxy.pac assuming it was created for windows? Should my URL include the .pac or just end after the port numbers? I've tried both without sucess, but I would like to know. A quick test to ping a fellow co-workers' PC was sucessful. So I can see network computers, but not google. or other internet sources.

It's simple to ping a server in C#, but suppose I have servers A, B and C. A connects to B. A asks B to ping C, to check that B can talk to C. A needs to read the outcome. Now, first of all is this possible without installing an application onto B? In other words, can I perform the entire check from just running a program on A? If so, can anyone suggest the route I would take to achieve this? I've looked at sockets but from the examples I've seen these require a client AND server application to function.

  • Cannot ping host stale ARP cache?

    - by gkchicago
I am having a strange issue with a Debian (Lenny/Linux 2.6.26-2-amd64) that has been driving me nuts. On some machines within my network I can ping the host in question just fine, other times I have to manually hard-code the ARP ethernet address for the IP in order to establish connectivity. I've finally worked it down to somehow involving ARP. I just found how to fix it in a way that made it work but I'm looking for help explaining this issue and also I don't trust my fix to be permanent.. My thought process has been the following but I just can't make any sense out of it: Could it be the card? (Intel 82555 rev 4) Could it be because there are two network cards? (Default route is eth0) Could it be because of the network aliases? Lenny? AMD x86_64? Argh.. Thank you for any insight you might have // Ping doesn't go thru [gordon@ubuntu ~]$ ping 192.168.135.101 PING 192.168.135.101 (192.168.135.101) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 192.168.135.101 ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 3014ms // Here's the ARP Table, sometimes the .151 address is good, sometimes it // also matches the Gateways MAC like .101 is doing right here. • Ping bind errors in Operations Manager 2007

    - by Andrew Rice
I am having an issue in SCOM 2007 R2. I am routinely getting the following errors: Failed to ping or bind to the RID Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping or bind to the Infrastructure Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping or bind to the Domain Naming Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. Failed to ping of bind to the Schema Master FSMO role holder. The default gateway is not pingable. The weird thing about these errors if I log into the server in question or if I log in to the SCOM server I can ping everything just fine. To top it all off the server in question is the role holder for 2 of the roles it is complaining about (RID and Infrastructure). Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

  • websites resolving in browser but not resolving in CLI. Can ping IP but not domain name (unknown host)

    - by tjkoding
Hi guys I'm currently developing using rails and for some reason bundle install is returning the following output Error Bundler::HTTPError during request to dependency API Fetching full source index from https://rubygems.org/ Could not reach https://rubygems.org/ I've discovered that pinging by domain name keeps returning an unknown host. The browser is still resolving web pages just fine and I've managed to confirm that the problem is localized (i.e. the rubygems page isn't down). I'm completely lost so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

    - by rjohnston
I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged. Here's an example: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Ping request could not find host damascus. Please check the name and try again. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping 192.168.1.17 Pinging 192.168.1.17 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 ... Ping statistics for 192.168.1.17: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Pinging damascus [192.168.1.17] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 .... Ping statistics for 192.168.1.17: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms C:\Documents and Settings\Rob> Likewise, subversion commands with either the machine name or IP address will fail until the machine's IP address is pinged. Occasionally, the machine won't respond to pings on it's IP address, it'll just come back with "Request timed out". The svn server is VisualSVN, if that helps... Any ideas?

  • Can not resolve hostnames on Xubuntu computers

    - by P Curtis
I have a network of computers which has been running for many years. I have changed two of those to Xubuntu 11.10 and found I can no longer connect by ssh using the host-name from any other machine. I can connect and ping by IP although ping is very slow in one case (~200ms). All other machines are fine including another with Ubuntu 11.10. Host-name resolution works from Xubuntu machines to other networked machines. I am using wins resolution and have checked settings in /etc/nsswitch.conf are the same as my working Ubuntu systems. What is different in Xubuntu networking that I might have missed?
