• Attaching event on the fly with prototype

  Hi, I've been scratching my head over this for an hour... I have a list of todo which has done button on each item. Every time a user clicks on that, it's supposed to do an Ajax call to the server, calling the marking function then updates the whole list. The problem I'm facing is that the new list has done buttons as well on each item. And it doesn't attach the click event anymore after first update. How do you attach an event handler on newly updated element with prototype? • UNIX-style RegExp Replace running extremely slowly under windows. Help?

  I'm trying to run a unix regEXP on every log file in a 1.12 GB directory, then replace the matched pattern with ''. Test run on a 4 meg file is took about 10 minutes, but worked. Obviously something is murdering performance by several orders of magnitude. Find: ^(?!.*155[0-2][0-9]{4}\s.*).*$ -- NOTE: match any line NOT starting 152[0-2]NNNN where in is a number 0-9. Replace with: ''. Is there some justifiable reason for my regExp to take this long to replace matching text, or is the program I am using (this is windows / a program called "grepWin") most likely poorly optimized? • Vi/Vim: How to pipe visually selected text to a UNIX command and append output to current file

  Using Vim, I'm trying to pipe visually selected text to a UNIX command and have the output appended to the end of the current file. For example, say we have a SQL command such as: SELECT * FROM mytable; I want to do something like the following: V # select text :'<,'!mysql -uuser -ppass mydb But instead of having the output overwrite the currently selected text, I would like to have the output appended to the end of the file. You probably see where this is going. I'm working on using VIM as a simple SQL editor. That way, I don't have to leave VIM to edit, tweak, test SQL code. Thanks!

• What's the fastest way to get directory and subdirs size on unix using Perl?

  I am using Perl stat() function to get the size of directory and its subdirectories. I have a list of about 20 parent directories which have few thousand recursive subdirs and every subdir has few hundred records. Main computing part of script looks like this: sub getDirSize { my $dirSize = 0; my @dirContent = <*>; my $sizeOfFilesInDir = 0; foreach my $dirContent (@dirContent) { if (-f $dirContent) { my $size = (stat($dirContent))[7]; $dirSize += $size; } elsif (-d $dirContent) { $dirSize += getDirSize($dirContent); } } return $dirSize; } The script is executing for more than one hour and I want to make it faster. I was trying with the shell du command, but the output of du (transfered to bytes) is not accurate. And it is also quite time consuming. I am working on HP-UNIX 11i v1.

The installation finished and everything seems to work fine. The only thing I noticed are some warnings in the output of the installer.   I have a CENTOS6 server running with some wordpress & tomcat websites. In the last two days it has been crashing continuously. After investigation we found that kernelupdates binary consuming 100% cpu on server. Process is mentioned below. ./kernelupdates -B -o stratum+tcp://hk2.wemineltc.com:80 -u spdrman.9 -p passxxx But this process seems invalid kernel update. Might be server is compromised and this process is installed by hacker, So I've killed this process & removed apache user's cron entries. But somehow this process started again after couple of hours & cron entries also restored, I am searching for the thing which is modifying cron jobs. Does this process belong to a mining process? How can we stop cronjob modification and clean the source of this process?   I'm trying to run a unix regEXP on every log file in a 1.12 GB directory, then replace the matched pattern with ''. Test run on a 4 meg file is took about 10 minutes, but worked. Obviously something is murdering performance by several orders of magnitude. Find: ^(?!.*155[0-2][0-9]{4}\s.*).*$ -- NOTE: match any line NOT starting 155[0-2]NNNN where in is a number 0-9. Replace with: ''. Is there some justifiable reason for my regExp to take this long to replace matching text, or is the program I am using (this is windows / a program called "grepWin") most likely poorly optimized? Thanks. UPDATE: I am noticing that searching for ^(155[0-2]).$ takes ~7 seconds in a 5.6 MB file with 77 matches. Adding the Negative Lookahead Assertion, ?=, so that the regExp becomes ^(?!155[0-2]).$ is causing it to take at least 5-10 minutes; granted, there will be thousands and thousands of matches. Should the negative lookahead assertion be extremely detrimental to performance, and/or a large quantity of matches?

  Currently I have a couple of websites. My problem is that if I login on 1 specific domain with any of my programs (using notepadd++, FileZilla and Netbeans) the program stops at the content listing. I had it correctly running, (I'm working on a project on this domain for more than a year now) and suddenly I broke it somehow. This only happens on 1 specific domain, all other domains (from other hosts) are working. My colleague (next to me with same ip address) is able to login on this domain. Notepadd++ says: Failure retrieving contents of directory Filezilla says: Failed to retrieve directory listing Netbean popups: Upload files on save failed. (Because I have the setting upload on save enabled.) What I tried: First I thought it's my firewall, I disabled firewall but no result. Also notice that all other domain are working. Maby a blacklist with my ip address? No my colleague has the same ip address. Could anyone help me on this? Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone. • Getting ZFS per dataset IO statistics (or NFS per export IO statistics)

  Where do I find statistics about how IO is divided between zfs datasets? (zpool iostat only tells me how much IO a pool is experiencing.) All the relevant datasets are used through NFS, so I'd be happy with per export NFS IO statistics also. We're currently running OpenIndiana [edit] It seems that operation and byte counter are available in kstat kstat -p unix:*:vopstats_??????? ... unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:nputpage 50 unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:nread 12390785 ... unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:read_bytes 22272845340 unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:readdir_bytes 477996168 ... ...but the strange hexadecimal ID numbers have to be resolved from /etc/mnttab (better ideas?) rpool/export/home/jkj /export/home/jkj zfs rw,...,dev=2d90002 1308471917 Now writing a munin plugin to use the data...

• When connecting to a unix box, how does it know you have SSH setup on your desktop?

  When you use something like putty to connect to a linux box, and you setup your SSH keys etc. When connecting, how does it tell the server that you want to connect using your SSH keys? Is SSH running as a service on a particular port or does it simply pass your private-key and then the login service sees that and tries to connect using it? Just looking for a fairly high level understanding (with maybe some detail if you want to...)

  Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

• Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?

  I am trying to purchase something to replace our Vyatta router that is running in a virtual machine on Hyper V (having the whole network go down when the host has to reboot is not convenient and I am getting the sense that this configuration may not be stable). Most posts on this topic suggest using Linux/OpenBSD/FreeBSD/etc with some recommendations to use appliances from vendors for specific purposes like firewall and VPN. We are a windows shop and it has been a stretch for us to make use of Vyatta but since it was free and straightforward to use we decided to use it. Now we need something that is easier for our team to (re)deploy and manage. I would rather purchase something windows based or an appliance that can do all of the following things: DHCP server (reservations, specified gateway, dns, etc) Static Routes that route traffic across three interfaces Easily Reproducible (Powershell script, Puppet, Chef, etc) Intuitive interface (Decent web interface would be fine but I don't want them to have to go to CLI) Does any one have any recommendations on what I should be looking at that might meet our needs?

• Reset rc.d so software starts at boot again

  I ran the following 2 commands on my VPS box and now it boots without starting any software at all. According to rcconf it's still supposed to start my chosen software (ssh etc.) but it doesn't. update-rc.d vz defaults update-rc.d vzeventd defaults I already tried removing them again with update-rc.d -f vz remove update-rc.d -f vzeventd remove But that didnt't change anything. /etc/rc.local also still correctly lists some scripts I want to run at start-up, but they don't seem to be called either. How do I make my software start at boot again?

  I am currently writing a bash script (for Nagios), and I would like to be able to detect if specific network cards are up or not. My best guess is to do something like this: ifconfig eth0 | grep UP | wc -l or: ethtool eth0 | grep "Link detected: yes" | wc -l Are either/both of those reliable ways of testing if the network card is up, or is there a better option? Perhaps there is a flag on ethtool which will do precisely what I want? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/pointers! Rich
