• What is the correct HTTP status code to send when a site is down for maintenance?

  Is there a HTTP status code to tell Google (and others) to go away, index me again later? Basically, one that semantically tells clients that the site is down for maintenance? The ones I have considered are 304 => Not modified 307 => Temporary redirect 410 => Gone 503 => Service Unavailable I'm leaning towards the last one, but was just curious as to which one was proper choice. • embed multiple youtube videos to chromeless player cue

  So in the project ive been working on i use the youtube API to add a video to a chromeless player (got custom buttons, everything works no problems). It loads the youtube id which it gets from the database (Codeigniter, PHP). But what i would like to see is: instead of loading 1 video, id like to add all the videos i get from the database in the cue of that one player. So only one screen, first video retrieved from dbase gets played first, when its done second get loaded preferably also looped. Is there any way i can achieve this? My first guess would be to save the array with youtube id's somewhere and on state change (when the 'video stop'-event gets fired) load the next id from the array. Havent tried this yet because id prefer if the cue gets just gets filled on the init, so it doesnt have to load after a video has been ended. Is This possible?

I do not care, what if I want is the result which should be as close to: I send an email to [email protected], this post will add a case such as photos, then when the mail reaches the server, the server takes to process mail and copy the attached files, in this case the photos to a folder / home / public_html / photos and then, if possible notify you if it was successful or not. • Getting ftp_put progress

  I have a php script on a web server that uploads a file to another remote server via ftp_put. How can I display the current upload progress to the user? The only similar system I've seen is for file uploads from the user, with ajax requests to check the local size of the uploaded file on the server. The equivalent system would be ajax requests to the web server, that then checked file sizes on the remote server and returned that data to the user's clientscript. This seems horribly inefficient to me. Is there a better way?

• How can I determine what text on a webpage will render the largest?

  I'd like to write a function (ideally in PHP) where I can input a url and return a string corresponding to the hypertext from that webpage which would render the largest in a browser (any standard browser is fine). Getting the webpage and tokenizing things with DOM is pretty straightforward, but what's the best way to calculate ultimate size of the rendered text tokens - how do you account for CSS that includes px, em, % etc. for different font sizes. Anyone done something like this before I go and re-invent the wheel? Thanks in advance.

  I am pretty new in SQL so this may be a stupid question... I have a form in PHP which fills in few fields in my SQL table. I have this code: $sql="INSERT INTO $tbl_name (app_name, app_path, short_desc, full_desc) VALUES ('$_POST[app_name]', '$_POST[app_path]', '$_POST[short_desc]', '$_POST[full_desc]')"; But even app_name and app_path are NOT NULL columns, the query can be executed if there is no text in these fields in the form. So, my question is: How to stop the execution of the query if there is no text in the NOT NULL fields ?

• Confusion using MYSQLI

  I just started using mysqli API for PHP. Apparently, every time an object of the class MYSQLI is instantiated, it can setup a connection to the database as it connects to the server unlike mysql_connect, which connects to the server first and then you are required to specify the database to query. Now this is a good problem if the db exists, in my case, the db does not exist on the first ever connection to the server/execution of the problem, hence I must connect without specifying the database, which is fine, since the msyqli constructor does not make this database mandatory. My challenge is essentially, how do I check if the database exists before attempting the first connection. The only way to really do this would be to establish a conection to the server and then use the result of the following query to gauge if the database exists: SELECT COUNT(*) AS `exists` FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SCHEMATA WHERE SCHEMATA.SCHEMA_NAME="dbname" ; If this returns true, then the database exists, but now the challenge is how do I get the mysqli object to query this database rather than having to prefix the name of the database in the query.   I'm wondering if I can use a static variable for optimization: public function Bar() { static $i = moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall(); if ($i) { return something(); } else { return somethingElse(); } } I know that once $i is initialized, it won't be changed by by that line of code on successive calls to Bar(). I assume this means that moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall() won't be evaluated every time I call, but I'd like to know for certain. Once PHP sees a static variable that has been initialized, does it skip over that line of code? In other words, is this going to optimize my execution time if I make a lot of calls to Bar(), or am I wasting my time?

  dear All. I'm using integer PKs in some tables of mysql database. Before input from PHP script, I am doing some sanitizing, which includes intval($id) and $mysqli-real_escape_string(). The queries are quite simple insert into `tblproducts`(`supplier_id`,`description`) values('$supplier_id','$description') In this example, $description goes through real_escape_string(), while $supplier_id only being intval()'ed. I'm just curious, if there're any situations, when I need to apply both intval and real_escape_string to integer I'm inserting into DB? So basically do I really need to use? $supplier_id = intval($mysqli->real_escape_string($supplier_id)); Thank you.

• Suggest encoding which removes slashes which I can use as the format for REST-style URL-paramteters

  Given a path to a REST style URL: http://site.com/rest/customer/foo/robot/bar/1 When you GET it, it returns a PDF to the foo-customer containing page 1 of the bar-URL. While foo is the name of the customer bar is an URL. The URL usually contains slashes and might look something like this: http://anothersite.com/interestingarticle.html As REST URL's separate arguments by slashes I can't just put it into the REST URL above. Which encoding should I use? I can't use Base 64 as it utilizes the slash as well. As a technical note I will encode the URL in a .NET-application and decode it in PHP.

• Form Arrays support across browsers

  I'm not even sure if form arrays is the proper term, but it looks a bit like this: <input name='element[]' type='text' /> <input name='element[]' type='text' /> Which is then retrieved in PHP as an array stored in $_POST['element'] -- in this case with 2 values. I've tested it in the browsers I have available to me, but I've never seen this before and I'm wondering is this supported pretty much in all browsers? Or is this something very old that I've just not run into? Thanks!

• Is file_get_contents multi line?

  Hello all, Does file_get_contents maintain line breaks? I thought it did but I have tried this: if($conn){ $tsql = file_get_contents('scripts/CreateTables/SLR05_MATCH_CREATETABLES.sql'); $row = sqlsrv_query($conn, $tsql); print_r(sqlsrv_errors()); } The errors I get is that SQL Server complains that there is incorrect syntax. I get the same errors when I run the SQL Script without any line breaks, which suggests file_get_contents removes them? When I run the script normally (open the file in SQL Server Management Studio) and execute it, it works perfectly. So is there something that I can use that maintains line breaks etc? Or is there another problem here in using queries from a file with the SQL Server PHP Driver from Microsoft? Thanks all for any help

For example, we have a giant list of URLs that are in this format: /businesses /businesses/food /businesses/food/wendys /businesses/food/wendys/chili /businesses/food/wendys/fries /businesses/food/wendys/chicken-nuggets /businesses/pharmacy/cvs /businesses/pharmacy/cvs/toothpaste /businesses/pharmacy/cvs/toothpaste/brand ... and then we need to output each one, where the parent category is in h1 tags, the child is in h2 tags, and the children of that are in h3 tags. I can handle this but I feel my code is messy. I'm sure there is a design pattern I can use? Langs are ruby/php usually. how would you handle this?

  I am operating on a (not so) large graph having about 380K edges. I wrote a program to count the number of 3-cliques in the graph. A quick example: List of edges: A - B B - C C - A C - D List of cliques: A - B - C A 3-clique is nothing but a triangle in a graph. Currently, I am doing this using PHP+MySQL. As expected, it is not fast enough. Is there a way to do this in pure MySQL? (perhaps a way to insert all 3-cliques into a table?)

  I am currently developing a script in PHP to fetch webpages. The fact is that by doing so, I occasionally do too much requests to a particular website. In order to control any overflow, I would like to keep trace of how many requests have been done in the last hour or so for each domain. It doesn't need to be perfect, just a good estimate. I doesn't have access to a database, except sqlite2. I would really like something really simple because there will typically be a lot of updates, which is kind of heavy for a sqlite database. If no one has a magical solution, I'll go for sqlite, but I was curious what you can come up with Thank you very much

• MySQL Limiting a query to one consistent value

  My current query returns a table like: +------------+ value1 | .... value1 | .... value2 | .... value3 | .... +------------+ I want: +------------+ value1 | .... value1 | .... +------------+ I want to only receive all rows with the first value. Normally I would do a WHERE clause if I knew that value, and I cannot use a LIMIT because each value has a different number of rows. Right now My query looks like "SELECT u.*, n.something, w.* FROM ... AS u, ... AS n, ... AS w WHERE u.id = n.id AND w.val = n.val AND u.desc LIKE '%GET REQUEST VARIABLE%';" This works great, except I get way too many rows and using PHP to do this ruins code portability and is superfluous. They use a table named (wp_posts) and in this table they saved 3 related fields such as : post_title post_name guid It's clear that they save title of each story in post_title field , and slugs in post_name , and full url of a post in guild filed . But where the hell, they rewrite these urls in way it appears in browsers : http://localhost/wordpress/about/ There is no htaccess rules for this ! I checked rewrite.php and didn't understand an inch ?! If you were me , and u need to create such pages , what steps you would take !?

• Command Prompt closes on Windows, using Wamp Server commands

  Hey guys, I am following the tutorial on PHP with MySQL. In that tutorial ebook, they recommend us to use commands to set password for the MySQL. The command goes something like this, "mysqladmin -u root -p status" Now, I am using Windows XP and whenever I enter the command, the dos screen flashes and terminates. I am unable to note down the results, so the question: is there any way to stop command prompt from terminating on Windows machine? Looking forward to hear from you guys, thank you!
