  In Windows 2003 I was able to change the registry key as follows to display the actualy computer name on the desktop using the Computer Desktop Icon. System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}] Change "LocalizedString" value to %COMPUTERNAME% I'm getting access denied messages using regedit for this key and I'm unable to give full rights to this specific key as well as administrator. Does anyone have a better solution for displaying the computer name on the desktop? Thanks.

  Problem: we've grown to the point where we need a real DBA. Real DBAs are hard to find. Possible solution: I know someone with extensive experience (currently working on MSSQL) who is looking for a new DBA job. He might be willing to consider working for a MySQL shop (I haven't asked). Snag: I don't know to what extent MSSQL DBA skills map to MySQL DBA skills. I'm a developer, so I know enough about MySQL to develop apps which use it (including the basic performance-tuning, index selection, etc.), do schema design, and perform simple utility tasks (backup with mysqldump, scripting, etc.). I don't know anything about MSSQL. Nor do I actually know much about the boundaries of the DBA role. Can anyone with more experience - perhaps as a DBA - weigh in on this? Are there enough similarities between MSSQL and MySQL that it's worth asking a MSSQL DBA if he'd be interested in applying for a MySQL position?

  I'm trying to delete a few files that I created, and I have full permissions on, on a Windows 2008 system. The files are within a folder that I created so they are not system files of any kind. The message box that pops up when I try to delete the file is titled "Destination Folder Access Denied", and the message is "you need to confirm this operation", with a continue, skip or cancel button. I disabled UAC and rebooted to see if this would make the message go away -- it did not. However, with UAC disabled I am able to click on continue and the files are deleted. With UAC enabled I had to provide elevated credientials before the files would delete. What causes this behaviour and how can I remove it?

• What backup solution for Windows 2008 R2 servers on XenServer 5.0?

  A friend of mine is hosting a lot of Linux VM's on his servers using XenServer 5.0. He uses rdiff-backup to make daily backups. I'm trying to convince him to host some Windows VM's (Windows 2008 R2 Web Edition) too, so he could provide (me) .NET hosting. The main problem at the moment is a backup strategy for these Windows VM's. I would like to see something like a weekly full backup (snapshot of the VM?) with daily incrementals. I've looked at Windows Backup, but because the backups are made onto network shares it doesn't provide incrementals (for what I understand). Does anyone has any experience with this situation? How did you solve this in a "not-too-hard-to-install/maintain" way?

  Hi, in GPO, this item Computer > Software settings > Assigned applications > IE8_package was on Security tab set "Authenticated users" to "Deny". After that it disappeared from GPO, it is there, but nowhere shown. The intention was to disable installation of that package for now, yet having other packages in that GPO still installed. I know it was stupid decision now. Is there any way to display that package back? Please help.

  We're running several services in our company using a shared domain account. Unfortunately, the credentials for this account are widely distributed and being used frequently for both service and non-service purposes. This has led to a situation where it is possible that the services will be temporarily down due to this shared account being locked. Obviously, this situation needs to change. The plan is to change the services to run under a new account, but I don't think this goes far enough, as that account is subject to the same locking policy. My questions is this: Should we be setting up the service accounts differently than other domain accounts, and if we do, how do we manage those accounts. Please keep in mind that we are running a 2003 domain, and upgrading the domain controller is not a viable solution in the near term.

  Hi, How I can configure the path where the stdout logs are written by the WebLogic server? I've read about -Dweblogic.log.RedirectStdoutToServerLogEnabled=true, but this redirects only part of the output. For example if I will run a thread dump, the output will remain in the original log file. I think it should be an option in nodemanager/startup.properties file.   I have a small domain of users that I just migrated from a linux domain running open-ldap. Our new servers are running Windows 2008 Standard. I've installed Active Directory and everything is working perfectly... except that the initial user privileges is pretty restrictive and I need to loosen it up a bit. For example once they login to their workstations, they can create new files and folders but can not modify existing files or start. I basically want to open it all up except for software installations. Can someone please help with with this migration headache?

  I have been trying to setup Atlassian Fisheye/Crucible as a service on Win 2K3 R2 for two weeks. I keep getting various "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space" errors, which crash Fisheye and force me to restart the service. I've followed the example on the Atlassian support site to configure MaxPermSize within the service wrapper. However, when I check SysInfo inside the Fisheye Admin pages and the debug log, I don't see any confirmation. The Java Heap info is in both places, so I'd expect the MaxPermSize setting to show up in both places. The error is persisting and Atlassian support has been little help. I appreciate any help.

  I am wondering how long after a Domain Controller has been permanently lost, from the domain due to it dying from hardware perspective, do I have before I have to clean up references of it using meta data cleanup? This dead or lost domain controller had no roles other than being a Domain Controller and having integrated Active Directory DNS.   I'm running a "virtual" Mac OS machine on a Mac running VMWare Fusion. The Virtual Mac is setup with Bridged Networking, and has its own separate IP address. The outside world can connect to either the Mac itself or the virtual Mac via their respective IP addresses just fine, this works great! The problem... the Mac itself cannot connect to the virtual Mac's IP address, nor can the virtual Mac connect to the real Mac's IP address. Some things I've read mention something about enabling VMCI, but I have no idea how to do this, or if this is even the correct solution. Any suggestions?

• DHCP Client Can't Find DHCP Server

  I currently have 3 machines: CentOS (router) eth1 - 18.0.168.1 eth2 - 145.165.34.1 Windows Server 2008 (server) 18.0.168.2 DHCP scope - 145.165.34.10 - 145.165.34.20 Windows 7 (client) Supposed to use DHCP I can't get my Windows 7 client to get an address from the Windows Server 2008 DHCP server. Every network interface can ping each other (ex. 18.0.168.2 can ping 18.0.168.1 & 145.165.34.1 and the other way around). My Linux machine acting as the router has default IP tables. Other than this command which may or may not be right: iptables -I INPUT -p udp -d 18.0.168.2 --dport 67:68 -j ACCEPT I have also tried it after I flushed the IP tables. I was looking at the dhcrelay command but it seems CentOS doesn't have it and I am not even sure how to use it.
