    Do you need to have good spatial sense to be a good programmer? I have next to nothing of it (I think it has to do with the differing vision of my eyes). I've already coded quite little things but wonder if this interferes with the ability to 'imagine' the assembly of the code in case of a more complex program?   • Has anyone ever worked with a UX designer who also did the graphic design, is it a good combination?

    I want to rewrite TCP/IP streams. Ettercap's etterfilter command lets you perform simple live replacements of TCP/IP data based on fixed strings or regexes. The rewriting should occur at the transport layer (Layer 4) as it does in this example, instead of a lower layer packet-based approach. Thanks!

  • I just received a complaint from a user of the website I maintain. Should I do anything?

    I was sent sent a large wall of text from a user of the website I maintain at my job. They are clearly upset for having to deal with a horribly outdated web application that has not seen any serious updates in over 6+ years. No refactoring has been done, the code quality is terrible, the security unchecked, policy compliances ignored, in addition to being ugly and frankly embarrassing. Keep in mind this is a small business but the website is used by hundreds daily. I'm one of two programmers there, and I've been working there for two years. This person says they are about my age (22) and understand technology (but can't use proper grammar). The complaint mentioned awkward pages and actions on the website, but they don't even have a clue as to the depth of the flaws in this website. Now, I would love to honestly tell them that there's a lot wrong with this company and that this application was built when we were in high school. And that while it's not my fault that the website is terrible, I'm the one in position to fix it. But on the other hand, I could just say nothing and ignore it. Would doing this publicly have any advantage to future employees (showing integrity) or would it just be a completely pointless mistake? Odds are, even if I respond only that one person will ever read it. Regardless, I'm probably just going to ignore it and continue starting my project to refactor the website.

    Well i was using the info on this: Puppet - Any way to copy predefined custom configuration files for software on clients from the puppet master (host)? But i need some more elaborated, because i have several Desktops and are in use by 2 or 3 users each one, so i want to make a class for copy a shortcut in his desktops. The computers are joined to a domain, so any user can log in any desktop, and his profile is created in every desktop. I've tryed with this: class applink { file { "/home/installer/Escritorio/Workdesktop.desktop": owner => installer, group => root, mode => 770, source => "puppet://$server/files/Workdesktop.desktop" } This is only for one user called "installer", how can do this for several users?     Hello everyone, I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows. I have tried that Fn + Right arrow on Mac works as "END" key on Windows -- which makes cursor move to the end of line, for most application like Word for Mac -- I have tried it works. But I tried Fn + Right Arrow does not work for current question input box of SuperUser. I am wondering how to solve this issue and why?     I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard with BootCamp - missing the Home/End/PageUp/PageDown keys

    Last year I converted from Windows to a MacBook Pro and went through the process of learning the ways of the Mac keyboard. In particular, I learned that Ctrl-left and Ctrl-right were the Mac way of doing Home and End. I'm now doing a project on Windows 7 on Bootcamp, and finding that I'm missing the Windows Home and End keys in a completely different way -- they don't exist, but the Mac combos don't work either. Any suggestions for getting this functionality somehow? Code editing is a real drag without these keys.

    First, I ran: sudo su postgres createuser -U postgres foouser -P which worked fine, and I ran: createdb -U foouser -E utf8 -O foouser foodatabase -T template0 and got "permission denied: cannot create database" Firstly, should I even su as postgres to do operations like the first one (assuming my postgres data dir is owned by postgres), or is -U postgres from any user (assuming trust is used in pg_hba.conf) sufficient? Secondly, why am I running into this error? Is this because the user foouser is a non-superuser? Should I create foodatabase using the postgres user and simply -O foouser?

  • Adding user to chroot environment

    I've created a chroot system in my Ubuntu using schroot and debrootstrap, based on minimal ubuntu. However whenever I can't seem to add a new user into this chroot environment. Here is what happens. I enter schroot as root and add a new user.(Tried both adduser and useradd commands) The username lists up in /etc/passwd file and I can 'su' into the new user. So far so good. When I log out of schroot, and re-enter schroot, the user I created has vanished!! There is no mention of that user in /etc/passwd either. How do I make the new user permanent?

    I am a long time Mac user and I'm now using a Ubuntu machine for development, and while I'm more or less used to a lot of the keyboard shortcuts, one thing I can't get used to is using the 'Home' and 'End' keys to move around lines of text. On a Mac you use "Command + right arrow" to go to the end of a line and "Command + left arrow" to go to the beginning. Is there a way to enable this kind of functionality in Linux? I'm not sure if this would be considered remapping, keyboard shortcuts, or what...

  • Home and End keys in Emacs don't work when run from Tmux

    When I run Emacs from Tmux, the Home and End keys do not work (Home key runs the Search command as if C-s was pressed). The problem started when I added this in my ~/.bashrc file: TERM="xterm" export TERM I've read somewhere that TERM variable should not be set manually but this was the only way I was able to solve problems with colors. Without this setting I got different colors in Emacs when running directly from the terminal and different when running from Tmux. This option caused some of the keys not to work in Emacs when it was run from Tmux, so I added this line to my ~/.tmux.conf: set-window-option -g xterm-keys on This solved problem with all keys except for Home and End. Any ideas how to make these keys work again?

    I have a batch script that I use when I set up new Windows 7 PCs that creates a user based on a variable, creates a folder on their desktop, then shares it: @echo off SET /p unitnumber="Enter unit number: " net user unit%unitnumber% password /add /expire:never MD "C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting #%unitnumber%" runas /user:administrator "net share "Accounting#%unitnumber%"="C:/Users/unit%unitnumber%/Desktop/Accounting#%unitnumber"" I discovered that the share that is created is overwritten when the newly created user first logs on, because Windows creates builds their profile directory at that time. Is there any way to initiate a build of a user's profile directory in the batch file just after creating the it? The only thing that looks useful is the /homedir:pathname switch for the net user command, but I believe that option assumes the directory already exists. Other than that web research hasn't been fruitful. I'd be to use whatever to get this done as long as I can incorporate/launch it from the batch. Any suggestions?

    I need some good advise. I have used Access for many years and I use Sharepoint but never the two combined. My newly created Access db needs to be shared with many users across the organization. The back end is SQL and the old way to distribute the database would be placing the db on a shared drive, connecting their PC ODBC connections to the SQL db and then they would open the database and have at it. This has become the OLD way. What is the best (and simpliest) way to allow the end users to utilize a frontend for data entry/edit reporting etc. Can I create a link through SharePoint and the user just open it from there. Your good advise is greatly approciated.

    When I'm reading SICP (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs) recently, I'm very interested in the concept of an "Nondeterministic Algorithm". According to wikipedia:  In computer science, a nondeterministic algorithm is an algorithm with one or more choice points where multiple different continuations are possible, without any specification of which one will be taken. For example, here is an puzzle came from the SICP: Baker, Cooper, Fletcher, Miller, and Smith live on different floors of an apartment housethat contains only five floors. Baker does not live on the top floor. Cooper does not live onthe bottom floor. Fletcher does not live on either the top or the bottom floor. Miller lives ona higher floor than does Cooper. Smith does not live on a floor adjacent to Fletcher's.Fletcher does not live on a floor adjacent to Cooper's. Where does everyone live? After reading this I decided to build a simple nondeterministic calculation engine with .NET. The rough idea is that we can use an iterator to track each set of possible values of the parameters, and then we implement some logic inside the engine to automate the statemachine, so that we can try one combination of the values, then test it, and then move to the next. We also used a backtracking algorithm to go back when we are running out of choices at some point.
