• Synchronizing DataGridView (DataTable) with the DB

  Hi! I have the following situation: there is a table in the DB that is queried when the form loads and the retrieved data is filled into a DataGridView via the DataTable underneath. After the data is loaded the user is free to modify the data (add / delete rows, modify entries). The form has 2 buttons: Apply and Refresh. The first one sends the changes to the database, the second one re-reads the data from the DB and erases any changes that have been made by the user. My question is: is this the best way to keep a DataGridView synchronized with the DB (from a users point of view)? For now these are the downsides: the user must keep track of what he is doing and must press the button every while the modifications are lost if the form is closed / app crash / ... I tried sending the changes to the DB on CellEndEdit event but then the user also needs some Undo/Redo functionality and that is ... well ... a different story. So, any suggestions?

• How can I organize many results in a selectbox using php?

  I have a select box that is part of a form. It is currently querying the addresses table and displaying the addresses into the select box. I plan on having up to 100 addresses. I'm looking for a solution where I can show all the states if the user clicks on the select box. Then if the user hovers over a state it will show all the addresses for that specific state. Then if the user clicks on an address, it will show that as the picked option in the select box. This is like a dropdown menu within a select box. Does anyone know where I can find a solution as this?

• Rails log shows unexpected data as to the time spent on a DB stuff

  I'm running on WinXP + Ruby 1.8.6 + Rails 2.3.5 (frozen to the project) in development environment. Looking at development.log I observe inconsistent data as to the time spent on a database stuff. • MSBuild: automate collecting of db migration scripts?

  Summary of environment. Asp.net web application (source stored in svn) sqlserver database. (Database schema (tables/sprocs) stored in svn) db version is synced with web application assembly version. (stored in table 'CurrentVersion') CI hudson server that checks out web app from repo and runs custom msbuild file to publish/package app. My msbuild script updates the assembly version of the web app (Major.Minor.Revision.Build) on each build. The 'Revision' is set to the currently checked out svn revision and the 'Build' to the hudson build number (incremented on each automated build). This way i can match the app to a specific trunk revision also get other build stats from the hudson build number. I'd like to automate the collecting of migration scripts (updated sprocs etc) to add to the zip package. I guess by comparing the svn revision of the db that has yet to be deployed to, to the revision being deployed, i can find what db files have changed in the trunk since the last deployment to that database/environment. This could easily be achieved by manually calling the svn diff -r REVNO:REVNO command to list changed .sql files. These files could then manually have to be added to the package. It would be great if this could be automated. Firstly i'd imagine I'll have to write a custom task to check the version of the db that has yet to be deployed to. After that I'm quite unsure. Does anyone have any suggestion on how this would be achieved through an msbuild task either existing or custom? Finally I'll have to autogen a script to add to the package that updates the database version table so as to be in sync with the application.

• Using array instead of lots of db queries in PHP

  My function looks like that. It works but does lots of work (recursively calls itself and does lots of db queries.). There must be another way to do same thing but with array (with one query). I can't figure out how to modify this function to get it work with array. • Codeigniter: how should I restructure db schema?

  I don't even know if that's the right term. May it be known that I'm a major novice! I have three tables: users, profiles, and survey. Each one has user_id as it's first field, (auto-increment for users), and they're all tied by a foreign key constraint, CASCADE on DELETE. Currently, for each user, let's say user_id 1, they have a corresponding db entry in the other tables. For profiles it lists all their information, and the survey table holds all their survey information. Now I must change things...darn scope creep. Users need the ability to have multiple survey results. I imagine that this would be similar to a comment table for a blog... My entire app runs around the idea that a single user is linked to a constraining profile and survey. How should I structure my db? How should I design my app's db so that a user can have multiple tests/profiles for the test? Please assist! Any advice, information and personal-knowledge is appreciated! Right now the only way I know how to accompany my client is to create a pseudo-user for each test (so unnecessary) and list them in a view table (called "your tests")-- these are obtained from the db by saying: where user_id=manager_id

• JQuery: Selecting Text in an Element (akin to highlighting with your mouse)

  I would like to have users click a link that then selects the html text in another element (NOT an input). By "select" I mean the same way you would select text by dragging your mouse over it. This has been a bear to research because everyone talks about "select" or "highlight" in other terms. Is this possible? • Basic SQL Select in Postgresql fails

  I am doing a select * on a postgresql table, and everything looks good. But if I do: SELECT Name from People It says: ERROR: column People.Name does not exist SQL state: 42703 Character: 8 But the name column shows up during select *. I've tried: SELECT People.Name from People as well, with the same result. Am I missing something? It should be pretty easy to do this in any other database.

• InnerHTML IE 8 doesn't work properly? Resetting form.

  Yeah this works in FF and Chrome, but for some reason wont work in IE 8. I'm using a radio button to clear a section of a form.. that section is a select box, but I don't want to leave the area empty - instead I want to reset it to what it was when the page loaded. At the moment IE8 is just leaving me with an empty small select box. Html: <select id="city_select" disabled="true" name="location_id" onchange="show_search_button();"><option selected>Select your city</option> </select> Javascript: document.getElementById('city_select').innerHTML = "<option selected>Select your city</option>"; I've also tried using location_id instead of city_select in the javascript but to no avail.. innerText and innerContent dont work either.. though the inner.HTML works in IE8 for an earlier function, but that isnt trying to innerHTML into a form. Does anybody know why this works in Chrome and FF but not IE8? and is there a solution to this? Any help appreciated thanks!

  Hi, I am working with small ASP.NET MVC project - online store. I have addToCart method which adds selected product to cart - it updates cart table in my db and showing cart view with its content. But I have problems. While db is updating correctly the view does not. I see that quantity of the product in my db is incremented correctly but quantity in view is not changed. I have to stop debugging my app in visual studia and restart it - then my view is showing correct data. What can be wrong?

  Both replication and clustering are terms for servers setups with physical (real) servers, usually implemented on a DB or AS level. Now the question: In a virtualized environment with "easy" scalable servers (touching clustering) and a higher availability (DB replication) through the means of high availability of the virtual server by the cloudserver provider, do we really need replication and clustering (as in covering the problems of traditional servers) ? Question is asked from a soultion/application provider viewpoint. Please exclude the need of replication with a business requirement background, eg. the need to replicate a DB at 2 different geographical locations to ensure performance and data. • Synchronising local and remote DB

  Hi everyone, I have a general question about DB synchronisation. So, I'm developing a website locally (PHP + MySQL) and I would like to be able to synchronise at least the structure (and maybe the contents) of the two DB when one of the two is changed (normally I would change the local copy). Right now what I'm doing is to use mysqldump to dump the modified tables and then import them in the remote DB or do it by hand if the changes are minimal. However I find this tedious and error-prone. For the PHP I'm currently using Quanta+ which has the handy feature of finding files that have changed and just upload those. Is there something similar for MySQL? Otherwise how do you keep your DBs synchronised?   Hi, I always again encounter discussions about where to place the business logic: inside a business layer in the application code or down in the DB in terms of stored procedures. Personally I'd tend to the 1st approach, but I'd like to hear some opinions from your part first, without influencing you with my personal views. I know there doesn't exist a one-size-fits-all solution and it often depends on many factors, but we can discuss about that. Btw, we are in the context of web applications and our current approach is to have UI layer which accepts UI input and does a first, client-side validation Business layer with a number of service-classes which contains the business logic including validation for user input (server-side) Data Access Layer which calls stored procedures from the DB for doing persistency/read operations Many people however tend to move the business layer stuff (especially regarding the validation) down to the DB in terms of stored procedures. What do you think about it? I'd like to discuss.

• Postback problem? Not getting data back from DB

  I'm not getting back data from my DB like I'm expecting. I know that I can get data from the DB because I have other functions working. With this page, what I'm trying to do is the following: If no postback, then I would like it to echo "No Category Selected" If a category has been chosen, then I would like for it to get that data from the DB and show it on the page.
