  • Using Google Webmaster & Analytics, what data to look at to improve website performance?

    - by Rob
Using data from Google Analytics and Webmaster tools, what data should I be looking at to improve my websites performance? I want to improve the SEO, usability and just general performance of my website. EDIT: It's a portfolio website that we've done the initial SEO for, also optimised all images etc and made the site as fast as possible. What kind of things should I be looking out for in the analytics and webmaster data to improve performance for both the SEO and each individual page.

  • It's possible to fulfill the social necessity of a human being through a social game in 3D like IMVU?

    - by Totty
(I'm not advertising nor promoting this game, as it's just an example of my experience and I would like to have your opinion about the matter if possible) I've been started researching "things" about games and I've decided to begin to play IMVU as a friend of mine said it's cool. At first it seemed just another 3d social game, not so cool.. But I've "tried to like" and after 1 day I can say I'm addicted to it! Yes; I will explain better: About the game: You can go in chat-rooms, move to positions. Some positions are like sitting in a sofa, floor, dancing alone or with a partner, kissing and more in this way. In the free version of the game there is no nudity. You can even listen to music, view youtube... The 3d graphics are quite low end, so it's not as real as the paid PC games of today. About my experience: At first I was going with my friend in chat-rooms, they seemed very nice. There were people talking about general stuff, quite like in a real life. Well, I begin to know some girls (yes, virtual girls commanded by a real girl, I hope!). Things happened: Some girls are just crazy, not like in real life, they make out in before even talking; Other girls you can speak a little bit, then they add you to their friend-list. Sometimes they invite to their virtual places. Some girls have really IMVU boyfriends only (but not in reality) and most of them don't even make up in the game, so it's really a level of commitment involved here! But from what my friend told they last for him, at least, about 3 days... Some others have real and IMVU boyfriends that are the same. Until now I haven't find a girl with different boyfriend in the IMVU and reality. Nor multiple boyfriends. There are rooms where the same people find each selves every day and speak about general stuff, relationships and so on... They are nice with you, they "feel" you and show careness. This is what amazes me, they treat you like a real human being and as being their friend in the real world. (of course it's not always like this) There are jealous girls too and competitiveness between females lol, I know you loled! This is kind of social. So today I closed my door in my room and I've played it all day long and guess what, I didn't feel a need to stay with a real person at all. Normally, If I would stay a full day alone I would get quite crazy... So the question is: It's just me that seemed to be able to fulfill my social needs or there is something more? thanks for your precious time for reading my full question,

  • Recommended online training sites on software development

    - by liortal
I am looking for an online training site that provides courses on software development topics. Subjects that are needed for my work are .NET, general object oriented principles, design patterns, unit testing, continuous integration but not limited to these in particular. I have tried to use Pluralsight which was nice, however i am not sure the style of videos only is sufficient (for my at least). Are there any other training companies that provide online courses in other formats that you found useful (regarding .NET but not limited only to it). Thanks

  • NOSQL - Extracting keywords from PowerPoint using PowerShell

    - by John Paul Cook
Yesterday I mentioned my desire to transform PowerPoint slides from just data to actual information. I've made good progress using PowerShell, but I need PowerShell help with a problem that I hope is of some general interest. Originally I considered using full-text search in SQL Server, but realized it wouldn't do what I wanted, thus the NOSQL approach. I need to extract the keywords from a PowerPoint presentation. On the File menu in PowerPoint 2007/2010, the Save & Send has a Create Handouts...(read more)

  • Is there any copyleft (GPL-like) license with both the Affero and Lesser modifications?

    - by Ben Voigt
Looking for a license that covers public network service, like AGPLv3, but like LGPL isn't infectious. Basically I wrote some useful helper functions I want to allow to be used in any work, including closed-source software, but I want to require improvements to MY CODE to be released back to me and the general public. Can you recommend a suitable license? It should also include some of the other AGPL-permitted restrictions (attribution, indemnity), either in the license text or as permitted variations.

  • Terrain square loading

    - by AndroidXTr3meN
Games like Skyrim, Morrowind, and more are using quads or square to divide the terrain if im correct. The player is always at #5 1 | 2 | 3 4 | 5 | 6 7 | 8 | 9 So whenever you cross the border you unload and load the new "areas" But if the user goes just over the edge and then the second after goes back previous area a lot of unnecessary loading and unloading is done. Is there a general approach to this because I dont think games like skyrim have this issue? Cheers!

  • What is UEFI and Secure Boot? How do they affect Ubuntu?

    - by Oxwivi
Discussions and reports about UEFI and Secure Boot has cropped up in many Linux circles, but can anyone summarize it's impacts on Ubuntu and how it affects the general users? I know that UEFI and Secure Boot are separate (not interchangeable), with Secure Boot being a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS specification. PS I do know how it affects Ubuntu, this question is for the benefit of public knowledge.

  • SIMD Extensions for the Database Storage Engine

    - by jchang
For the last 15 years, Intel and AMD have been progressively adding special purpose extensions to their processor architectures. The extensions mostly pertain to vector operations with Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) concept. The motivation was that achieving significant performance improvement over each successive generation for the general purpose elements had become extraordinarily difficult. On the other hand, SIMD performance could be significantly improved with special purpose registers...(read more)

  • Textual descriptions of 8-bit and 16-bit game engines

    - by ixtmixilix
I found a good description of the engine in the Sonic games. It describes roughly how the engine works for people writing their own clones. In my case, I am simply interested in getting a general view of how the many 8-bit and 16-bit game engines worked on their respective consoles. So, this is a big-list style question asking, what other online descriptions of specific game engines have people found?

  • How to check battery usage of an iPhone/Android app?

    - by Gajoo
I think the title says Enough. For example Unity can generate you a report how much CPU/GPU power it's using or how fast it's going to drain device battery, but what about the applications developed using Cocos2d or the ones you develop directly using OpenGL? How should you profile them? In general what should you profile? or Should I simply run the application and wait for it's battery to run out?

  • CppUnit for unit-testing executable files?

    - by hagubear
I am not sure if anyone has done it. I am trying to do something that is in general, uncommon i.e. unit-testing executable (Windows) or ELFs (Linux). I know that CppUnit provides a good unit testing facility, but I have never used it for unit-testing (used UnitTest++). I hear rumours that you can unit-test executables too. Does anyone have the experience in this? A relevant post regarding the philosophy of it was here
