How much memory (RAM) would the average LAMP production server use, assuming little-to-no traffic, barebones except Apache2, PHP 5.3, MySQL5 installed and running?
Hi,
I'm trying to shrink an Windows 7 XP Mode VHD file with little success.
I've been trying to use VhdResizer.
When I select my VHD file, it says "VhdExpand only supports fixed and dynamic VHD files".
My XP Mode VHDs are dynamic files.
Does anyone have any idea why it is failing?
Failing that, does anyone have a process which I can use to shrink my XP mode VHD files?
Thanks.
I've recently taken over management of a Windows 2003 Small Business Server and network for a small, less than ten person company.
I have some (antiquated) sysadmin experience, but I've little experience with Exchange.
The documentation of the existing infrastructure leaves much to be desired, and I was wondering if there's any sort of "So you've just become sysadmin" guides that anyone could recommend.
I have looked at the official sites documentation, and it is a little tough to find starting points.
Is there a free comprehensive guide that is easy to understand for someone that has never dealt with mod_security?
I think it absurd that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth.
I can only assume that there must be some reason behind this or a limitation preventing this, but what?
150mbps wifi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility.
Not only that but I have a secondary laptop and desktop which should by hardware comparison completely outperform anything the Tegra in the Nvidia Shield can do.
Is this all just a marketing scheme to force people to buy the shield for the streaming benefit?
Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will
be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”,
that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional
TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a
Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of
TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC,
versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will
require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi
NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p
streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is
presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode
Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application
functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode
^ This is not acceptable for me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better.
All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does.
I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think.
I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome?
(*) - perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package.
I'm new to Linux. I have a Windows network connected to a Linux computer. When I try to browse Windows files from windows managers in Linux, it asks for user name, work group name and password.
The address of computer network is something like this: smb://computer-name/folder
I want to access my network folders and files using command line. I have searched a little bit but I didn't find anything.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
(I'm not 100% sure where networking/router questions go this is my best guess)
I have a astaro (sophos) white UTM 120 router for work
I also have about 11 Voip phones with an externaly hosted pbx (company name = pingtone)
Is there any advantage to setting up the phones on a vlan vs making a qos rule that all traffic to my tftp server gets right of way?
networking is still a little soft to me
Thanks
I want an easier way to change my default sound device from my sound card to my usb headset.
Currently it takes a very precise right click, a left click, another right click, and two more left clicks.
Ideally i could just have it swap with a shortcut key. (it was a little easier in XP but not by much.)
A software solution is preferred, but I am open to suggestions that use hardware.
I am running Windows 7 currently.
I have a computer monitor that is approximately 23" in size. Its native resolution is 1920x1080, and Windows 7 will not allow it to be any higher. However, I cannot make the resolution a little lower as well. When I right-click on my desktop and select 'Screen resolution,' the vertical slider has only two options: 1920x1080 and 1280x720.
There are no real problems that I am having besides the fact that the image is slightly blurry. I can easily make things out and see them, but I definitely feel that the image is not as clear as it could be.
My graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5450 and it has the latest graphics drivers installed. I've tried playing around with the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to see if I can change an option to make the image clearer, but I had no luck. I did find one odd thing, though. When I lowered the refresh rate from 60Hz to 50Hz, the image kind of "zoomed in" but it also became perfectly clear like I would expect it to look. The problem is that when I use 50Hz, the image zooms in a little on the center and I lose maybe an inch and a half of the screen (I do not see the bar at the top of applications, I do not see the Windows taskbar thing, etc). I figured if I could somehow zoom in so that the entire image fills the screen (not the slightly cropped version) then I would have the perfectly crisp image of 50Hz, and also the uncropped image of 60Hz. However, upon zooming in, the image began to look blurry again just like it did with 60Hz.
So I am at a loss here. I do not know how to make the image look as clear as it should. I have the latest drivers (I updated them today) and I know that my monitor supports the resolution that I am trying to use.
Has anybody experienced something like this before? I'd really appreciate any input - thanks!
Update: I have figured out how to make the display look crisp! I set it to the 50Hz option, and then I changed the scaling through the monitor itself, rather than software.
Now, however, I am finding that games look pretty bad because since it is clear, the lower quality really becomes apparent. I cannot run new games at 1080p, so I run them at the lowest resolution possible (1280x720, since it is the only other option offered, as I have mentioned). So I am wondering, is there a way to have Windows display more resolution options?
I would need little help from you.
This is first time I see something like this happen to shell in Windows 7, as you can see, tabs and buttons in some programs, or control panel (see screenshot) are like those in basic Windows theme.
Of course, there is selected 'Adjust for best appearance' in System Properties, so it's not making a problem, also Aero theme is enabled, which is obvious.
What could be solution for this?
I only googled out this article, but it's using apt-get to automate the installing.
I even don't know the name of fastcgi version of php,is it still named php or something else?
I'm installing apache/php from source code, can someone guide me a little?
Thanks!
I've searched all over the internet for an answer to this and I can't find one. If I purchase a wireless N router, with greater range than my current G router will the range of the wireless G signal go as far as the wireless N signal? I say this because Wireless N routers are supposed to be compatible with wireless G devices. Is the wireless G a lesser signal coming out of the router?
Sorry if I confused you, I am a little confused myself.
Hi,
I was wondering the steps I can take to change the localhost name to a test development domain name like "website.dev" on Win7 x64 ? Currently, when my test website builds its assigned to 127.0.0.1:81 but I want this to instead have a name like "website.dev" that is accessible on my local network ?
[and sure any Virtual PCs built on this local PC]
I think this is done via the hosts file but I am little unsure how to do this ? Would someone be able to assist ?
Thx
Hello,
Just a quick question: is there a reason to change a server's hard drive after x years before it faults (it eventually will at some point) or should I just leave it until it faults? I have little experience with actual server administration so I wonder...
I need to write a technical document in Microsoft Word, with source code samples sprinkled throughout the text.
Is there any way, without leaving Microsoft Word (maybe a plugin?), to format the source code snippets within the document in the same easy way that SuperUser.com provides - a little button that defines everything as code and formats it appropriately?
Hello all. I have a little problem with my apache centos server with php 5.0 and mysql. When I open multiples files, sometimes, it show de pages .php for download. I think that PHP have a problem, because it happens only when I open many browser windows (like 30). How can I solve this issue?
I currently have Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04, Fedora 17, and open SUSE installed. I currently use BURG boot loader to load up all the systems. However, BURG does not work with windows(I still manage) and it is a little finicky. So, I want to make windows work and have all the other OSes I want all on one boot loader. I already tried easy BCD and for whatever reason Fedora took over and blocked out the other OSes.
how to force php to read SERVER_PORT as 80, when apache listens on 8080 and varnish listens on 80 ??
if my apache vhost is set to 8080, SERVER_PORT will always be 8080, this is troubling me a little since in many parts of the application some links are calculated with SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT together, .. so what I need is that php "believes" that SERVER_PORT is 80, so all links will pass trough varnish

I need to set up nginx so that when a timeout occurs attempting to reach the upstream proxy, that it will just return the cached version on disk.
Can someone tell me how, as the docs are a little sparse on information.
Guess the title kind of says it all, I know there have been a few of these questions before and I have tirelessly tried to do this research but have had very little luck.
Essentially I love Google Reader and gears for offline viewing but more and more blogs are referring to diagrams and pictures in their articles and if I'm on a plane, I am not able to see any of these since they are not downloaded during offline mode.
Any RSS readers out there that are?
Hi,
Im relatively new to Ubuntu, Im wondering how easy it is to write what I think is called a shell script to make tasks a little easier.
For example I frequently connect to a server - ssh -p 123 [email protected]
Can and how could I shorten this to a shorter command like "mysite" or "connect mysite"
Thanks.
I love Songbird but I was already whether it's possible add an additional column to the Songbird layout, I love categorising my music by dates as well, and find right clicking above the column header to change a little to messy and want even more flexibility.
So here's my mockup of the 4-pane panel library, I think I've made Songbird do this by mistake in the past through a bug. Question is, is this possible?
I have Automatic Updates enabled and every now and then I'll get that little pop-up window that nags me to reboot to complete the update process. Usually, I ignore it and after 2 days my computer crashes. It crashes by freezing all the programs, including Windows Explorer, to the point that I can't even use CTRL-Alt-Delete (and my mouse lags).
I'm pretty sure it's Windows Updates that is causing this. So, for now, I've disabled Windows Updates.
I've inherited a network that is truly a mess and the VPN config is amazingly long with confusing group names and very little documentation. I am curious to see how others have gone about auditing these types of connections. Are there any forms out there? What information should I collect? I assume things like Customer, Department, Technical Lead, and etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice on this nightmare.
The title says it all. I'm interested in replacing a Windows file server with a Linux Samba file server, but the caveat is that share/folder permissions must be preserved. We'd be using the new active directory authentication in Samba, so the two servers would at least be in the same domain to make things a little simpler, and all the users/groups are domain-level users/groups. Does anyone know if this is possible?
